This forest serves as the gateway into Norrath for the wood elves of Kelethin and high elves of Felwithe. And with Ak'Anon and Kaladim so close by, it is not uncommon to see gnomes and dwarves throughout the area as well.

Don't let the safety of Kelethin's well-fortified boundaries fool you. While the area has numerous guard posts and patrols, the further you travel away from the city the higher level of danger and risk you will encounter.

The orc stronghold of Crushbone can be found along the northern boundaries of the forest while the darker, more dangerous Lesser Faydark lies to the south. Only those more experienced should consider travelling to the two areas.

What are you crazy!! I have a lv5 half elf ranger and I solo butcherblock all the time!! Dosen't everthing con green or early blue to you at lv11? And if you wait that late where are you gonna go the rest of the time? And as for waiting for 18 to goto Crushbone!? I got another character (a lv8 wiz) who got in a group of a lv7 warr a lv9 cleric and(part of the time) a lv8 ranger, we could kill Legionaires or groups of cents that we could pull! We stayed near the cabin the whole time and pulled things, we got awesome exp. If you wait till 18 to goin there you might get some exp for legos and pretty much you can only fight the royalty. The only thing you have to worry about is if some idoit trains a big group into(specilly when its emperor crush at the zone ent(i hate whoever did that)). Groups are the key to Everquest, get in a good group and yo can go anywhere!

random GM event or part of storyline?
# Jul 10 2001 at 3:47 PM Rating: Default
Last night (7/9/01) on the Xev server, I had my newbie bard running around gaining exp/cash when there was a zone-wide message....

"The sound of war drums comes from the Crushbone camps."

Or something like that. :-)

Next thing we know, there are orc centaurions EVERYWHERE - I swear it was like they fell out of the sky (trees?) and they were even all over the Kelethin platforms. Of course tons of high-lvls came zoning in (amazingly the zone didn't crash) and went on an orc killing spree. Even the Lord made an appearance in the zone, but it was mainly cents.

I didn't hear of them dropping anything beyond the norm; simply am curious if anybody knows if this is part of storylines (ongoing) or upcoming (related to the Shadows expansion?).

I am not sure myself of the meaning of this event. What I am sure of tho, is that when you are fairly low level and in a fairly small group, your chance of survival are quite dim. If you are lucky enough, there will be several other groups around, and with a massive teamwork you could clear the area. Otherwise, you will have to track down your corpse through an army of centurions.

Success in Gfay (part 1)
# Jul 07 2001 at 7:17 PM Rating: Decent
Here are some suggestions for gaining XP and money in greater faydark from levels 1-9 or 10. By the way.. this would be mainly for non-hated races of the Wood Elves. Ogres, Trolls, Dark Elves, and Iksar shouldn't use these strategies if you don't have good faction with Wood/high elves.

For experience, your best method would actually be to hang out in your own newbie zone UNLESS you are bound to Greater Faydark at one of the lifts, in which case it doesn't really matter. I suggest you hang around Kelethin, as you don't have to zone to get supplies. Remember to make SURE you know which way a lift is so you can quickly run back to the guard in case you get in trouble. As you're advancing, loot everything possible and sell it so you can buy a good amount of food/water (10-15 will support you for a good while) and maybe try to buy some better armor.

Now, at around level 4 or 5 you should definitly consider going to one of the best newbie-ish camps, the orc hills. Wait around the Orc Lift (there's usually a group of people around it) until you get a bind, and you might even be able to pick up a couple buffs around here (mostly Ranger/Druid since you're around a Wood Elf place). Now, by now you should at least have a couple pieces of armor, even if it's only cloth. Try to pick up a decent weapon as well from the various dozens of merchants throughout kelethin, you'll probably at least find something rusty.

Here is a very important rule when going to orc hills at level 4-5: make SURE you have a big group and absolutely don't get into melee combat since your HP, no matter what class, will be low (unless you're a twink). Just assist the main puller/tank with spells, heals, buffs, attacking, whatever, but try not to attract the orcs' attention. If you're having trouble finding a group, gain a level or two towards your newbie zone. Someone level 5-7 will almost definitly get a group. Now, the experience here is excellent at these levels, and you should try to loot every corpse possible (you can get CB belts, rusty weapons, cloth armor, the latter 2 can sell around 1 gold each which is great in the long run, CB belts explained later). If you're a tank type class, you can probably wear some of the stuff you loot, and elves/midgets can wear the cloth armor.

(Continued in next subject)
Success in Gfay (part 2)
# Jul 07 2001 at 7:36 PM Rating: Good
(Continued from parent subject)

If you're playing it safe and avoiding being attacked but still helping out a little, you should be getting great experience and enough loot to keep you sustained and give you a little extra money. At level 7 or so, you will be able to take the weaker centurions safely (steer clear from black/yellow ones), but depending on your class you may be able to do this one level earlier (ie Magician, Necromancer) or may need to wait a little longer (ie Wizard, Rogue, Bard). You should still be able to get a group, and that will be a great way to gain xp/loot.

Now, by this time you will probably have a ton of loot (if you haven't sold it already), and in that loot you will have at least a handful of Crushbone Belts (CB belts). I suggest you get 1-3 backpacks to carry your loot in (depending on carry cap) and organize. CB belts are for a quest in Kaladim and can be turned in for Experience and a little bit of money. You may be thinking, 'Wow, this is an easy way through the low levels!'. And I don't have anything against people who use that theory. But on the other hand, it is my opinion that you should not hand in too many, since there are other uses for the belts (explained next section) and they will put you through the levels while your skills are not up to par. Warriors should be specifically concerned about this; I always maxed out my taunt/kick/primary weapon skills for my level, but it would be harder for me to solo stuff and get good XP if I didn't do this and handed in belts instead.

[NOTE: There is a merchant in plain sight at the top of the orc lift. Sell your stuff to him.]

A great way to make money if you're not doing the CB belt quest is to help out people who ARE doing it. You can auction these belts for 1PP each in batches, and you should get a buyer eventually. If there isn't much of a demand for them, offer special deals (3 for 2pp, 5 for 3pp, 10 for 5pp) but never lower your total price beyond 5 gold per belt. Also, don't auction too much and be on the look out for people who say WTB CB belts. Sometimes, you may find people who want to buy ALL of the belts. This is how you can start getting real money (at least for low levels) and maybe some better weapons and armor.

It won't take long before you hit 8 and 9. At this point, orcs will start conning green and blue a lot (especially at 9, there's nothing above blue to my knowledge). Groups will be less effective unless you're a heavy support class, in which you will really have to group. This is why you should begin to solo all the centurions you can find. If you're a tank class, keep fighting, even if a group of them gang you (SoW will reduce the chance of dying from this to almost 0%). When doing this, you will be getting a minimum of 1pp worth of loot per 10 minutes at minimum (if you've been upgrading your spells/equip and have good skills/soloing talents you can get 1pp every 2 minutes until the place is cleaned out).

At level 9-10, however, start considering going to CB (Crushbone) which is a zone adjacent to the orc hills area. CB is noticeably harder in that it has orc Slavers, Legionnares, Emissaries, etc which are much harder than what you have been fighting. You will definitly need a group to fight the above mobs, so be careful.

If you have managed everything up to here, you will be quite pleased that you can reach level 9-10 in a short period of time and get 50+ platinum spare. I hope you have gotten something out of reading this, and good luck to you in your travels =)

Very informative. I wanted to offer addendum info, if I could.

Your level suggestions are a little high for some classes. As a level 4 enchanter, I was soloing orc hill. While there was death to be had, it was still well worth it for the loot and xp that I got. At any rate, a pet-class should be able to begin solo'ing orcs a lot sooner than the melee classes.

I also found that I could enter Crushbone beginning at around lvl 7 with a group, though convincing other players of that is difficult. By lvl 7, the orcs tend to get weaker, and when grouping orc hill is slow with xp. Crush is better because the cents are tougher. If you head the the left of the zone, near the bridge, you can pull cents til your heart is content, and avoid the castle trains. It is my experience that few trains come from slaver, and the ones that do are so minor that they are usually dispatched by higher lvls who are medding/buffing at the zone.

For those who want to keep thier belts for quest, but want to follow the suggestion of being careful about not getting xp too high above skills, I would suggest holding your belts in the bank until probably lvl 6 or 7. Since you will have been fighting orc pawns and orc cents for 4-5 and 2-3 lvls respectively, your skills should be doing well. You will rise slower to lvls 6 and 7 but your skills should be up to par.

I have never done this quest, but I know that in kaladim you get expirence, and money, (and i have heard a weapon too). people will buy these belts for 5 gp, (the merchants buy them for 2 sp, 7 cp). I suggest that when you get them but them in the bank. When you have a lot go to kaladim and take them out of the bank, or you can collect them and when someone is advertising that they are buying them, unload them for a lot of money, i once got 10 pp for selling the ones i had stashed up.

The Crushbone quest is from Canloe Nusback in the Warrior's guild in Kaladim. (hehe hope I spelled that right) Anyway, you can turn in 4 belts or 2 pads at a time and you get xp, money, and (patchwork/tattered) armour. I don't know when the pads and belts stop giving xp, but it's worth doing the quest.

I'm lvl 24 necro Iksar. I came to kelethin once before when I was lvl 18. There are 3 problems I've encountered. 1. You are KoS to all the guards but strangely not to Merchants. they do not sell to you. Faerie's are KoS to you too so watch out for them, almost got killed once by a royal guard. 2. Can't use the bank, well not in current form, I tried invis and went to banker williem and slash slash, I can see the inventory I left in there but I got killed in the process. I managed to do this with gather shadows, very handy when it comes to evading guards. 3. Food and Water will be hard for you. I forged and I got Morning dew about half the time. Luckily 90% of my guild are elves so they helped me out with food and water but if you do not have help don't come. You will make a big commotion if people saw you up in kelethin, I sure did.

You either find a willing Necromancer/Bard (!?) to locate your corpse -- a class skill/spell. Or you become wise before your slender seasons, and impress the other newbies with your 'uber' knowledge.

It's called the /loc(ation) key. Here's how it works.

Each zone has a north/south reference, as well as a west/east reference. Location 0, 0, can be regarded as the 'center' of each and every zone.

When you type the command /loc(ation) you will receive 3 sets of numbers: <n/s>, <w/e>, and altitude (not important .. unless VERY high up). The first set of numbers relate to how far north or south of the zone center you are: positive integers indicate that you are 'north', whilst a negative integer will indicate that you are 'south'.

The second set of numbers relate to how far west or east of the zone center you are: positive integers indicate that you are 'west', whilst a negative integer will indicate that you are 'east'. Yes, confusing because Verant have decided that zones shall run from west to east.

Examples of location:
(1) Felwithe loc: neg 2000, neg 2400. The 1st set of numbers illustrate that we are very much 'south' of the center, and the 2nd set of numbers indicate that we are very much 'east'. Therefore, Felwithe is located very much SE in the Greater Faydark zone.

(2) Orc Lift loc: 1000, 200. The 1st set of numbers illustrate that we are to the north of the center, and the 2nd set of numbers indicate that we are ever so slightly 'west' of the center.

Therefore, when you type /loc(ation), using the information above, you should soon begin to locate yourself within a given zone. However, it is helpful to know the reference points within that zone i.e. cities, druid rings/wizard spires, mob camps etc.

Here are a few location reference points within Greater Faydark:

Felwithe: neg 2000, neg 2400
Wizard Spires: neg 2000, 400
BB zone line: neg 1500, 2500
CB zone line: 2400, 0
LF zone line: neg 2500, neg 1000
POD lift: 150, 200
Newbie lift: 0, neg 100
Orc lift: 1000, 200
Orc Hill: 1850, neg 100
Bandit Camp: 1250, neg 700
Ruins: 450, neg 400

Note: All credit for the advice must be shared between Muse, who runs the EQ Atlas website and provides a much clearer example of how to use
the /loc(ation) command, as well as the player in the Enchanter Forum who provided details of the Stein of Moggok quest, and who published the location references given above.

Hope that this information is useful. ALWAYS take a corpse reading before you die. It is FAR better to take a stoical view and approach your death with dignity, than to run like a spineless coward and lose your bearings, and subsequently your corpse.

Note: If you are within 50 meters of your corpse and have it targetted then type /corpse, which will summon your corpse. YES! You -can- be invisible and summon your corpse. A major blessing when performing a CR [Corpse Retrieval] from the Throne Room in Crush Bone.

Sorry folks, I have spotted one factual inaccuracy: 0,0 should -not- be regarded as the center of each and every zone. Simply because zone length (north to south) and breadth (west to east) is -not- uniform - each zone has a different set of co-ordinates for length and breadth.

example: West Karana runs from length 1000 (further point north) to neg 4000 (furthest point south) and breadth 0 or neg 1000 (furthest point west) to neg 16000 (furthest point east).

West Karana is approx. the same length as Greater Faydark, but easily surpasses it [Greater Faydark] in breadth, approx. three times the distance running from the Qeynos Hills in the west of the zone (neg 1000) to North Karana to the east (neg 16000).

The -best- way to familarise yourselves with a particular zone is to use EQ Atlas to ascertain length and breadth of a particular zone, as well as reference points within that zone e.g. merchant huts/inns, Druid rings, and/or Wizard spires, cities, zone lines, various mob camps etc.

how to get from lv 7 to lv 10
# May 10 2001 at 10:20 PM Rating: Default
At lv 7-9 the best way to get up a lv is to do the CB belt quest. You can make the trip to Keledim and suvive at ork hill(to get the belts) at lv 7. You can suvive at lv4 or 5(debending on your class[milee4 casters5] it is reletivly easy to go from lv 4/5 to 7). Plus you get a tatered item that you can sell for a gold(very important for casters). That is how my lv 10 druid went up lvs 7,8, and 9.

LVL6: go to crushbone entrance and kill, stay in a safe spot
7-11 OR 12: Crushbone, start near entrance to zone, later move to outside slave caves, then back side of slave tents, then finally go to castle bridges. LVL11: Follow path past felwithe, go into lesser faydark, follow left wall until u zone into steamfont mountains, follow path for a bit and fight at minotaur caves

thats all ive got now, tell me if you have any objections to this, of course if you were a wood elf in the sense im speaking

"2.Make sure you con the pixie first, i think they're some hard ones in GFay, not sure though (might be faeries)"

Before you -consider- attacking either pixies or faeries, you must take two considerations into account:

(1) Guards will -not- assist you against the 'fickle folk' i.e. pixies or faeries. If you run into trouble then you must zone. Hence, it is -imperative- that if you wish to walk this shadowy path of attacking the 'fickle folk' then choose a spot near Felwithe (allowing you to zone should you need), and/or near a zone line.

Note: there are very -few- of the fickle folk near zones lines such as Lesser Faydark (generally to be avoided -- 'brownie scouts'. Go read edits within Lesser Faydark forum) and Butcher Block mountains).

(2) Faction: you will lose faction with pixies if you attack pixies, and faeries if you attack faeries. Be -very- careful about attacking these folk if when you con(sider) them, they con(sider) as 'dubiously'. You can become KoS with them.

Note: Reports suggest that you would have to kill a lot of Pixies to become KoS. However, it is your faction with the Faeries that you should watch carefully. Faeries range in level through Greater Faydark from Maidens, Guards, to Nobles.

A Faerie noble con(siders) 'RED' to me and I am level 12. Become KoS with Faeries and I advise leaving Greater Faydark until you reach a level that Faeries are more an annoyance rather than a Damoclean sword hanging above your neck by a slender thread.

If you hunt the 'fickle folk' (rangers, for the ranger quest -- turning in Pixie Dust) then be aware of the dangers.

**Addendum:
After levelling my Druid in Greater Faydark, once you reach levels 4-5, Pixies should be con(sider) green and therefore will not give experience. In this time period, my faction was 'apprehensive' with Pixies.

If we take into consideration x number of pixies needed to lower faction significantly enough to be 'KoS' with pixies, and the likelihood that players will not be hunting pixies beyond level 4+, the faction hit for pixies is -not- a major cause for concern.

re: Faeries. I don't hunt faeries for role-playing reasons. However, I have recently noticed that faeries are appearing with a greater frequency. Usually to be found in three places: (i) around the newbie area outside Felwithe, (ii) around the bandit camp, and (iii) around orc hill.

I have recently seen a Faerie Duchess make an appearance -- needless to say, considers tombstone 'RED' at level 11.

Hmm.. nice

but three things i dont like.

1. One could take on an Orc Pawn with or without a weapon at lvl 2, just make sure your near guards to make sure.

2.Make sure you con the pixie first, i think they're some hard ones in GFay, not sure though (might be faeries)

3. Fighting at the entrance to CB is a little risky, try orc hill first, as i have found the orcs at the entrance a little harder than the ones at the camp

But a good post, and good luck to all you newbies

Yes, the Orc Centurions found at the entrance to Crush Bone (loc: 2400, 0) are a -little- tougher, around 'BLUE' at levels 8-9 and are social i.e. will assist, there -is- a very good reason as to why players hunt at this area and the entrance tunnel of CB itself: if you get into trouble and bite off a little more than you can chew i.e. are jumped by 1 or 2 Orc Centurions who have taken umbrage at your intrusion, or have been trained -- a common problem -- then the zone to CB is merely meters away.

Orc Hill is littered with newbie bodies simply because if the camp respawns and/or you have a train pulled on you, then Orc Lift (loc: 1000, 200) is an -extremely- long run when being chased by up to 4 Orc Centurions (who bash i.e. stun) as well as an Orc Oracle. You will most probably die before you reach the guards, as well as cause the deaths of innocent players who will be unprepared for the oncoming train.

Note: please set up a hotkey to alert players that there is an Incoming Train. I have a hotkey set up called 'INC', with the following syntax:

"/shout ***Choo! Choo! Train! Incoming %T Choo! Choo!***"

%T is a 'string' (variable) and is whatever you have currently targetted. It is not uncommon to hear cries of 'Incoming Riotgirl' because I have been careless when pressing the -wrong- hotkeys.

I am kinda new to the game, and true enough, the bats and such in the newbie area are easy kills, but the xp sucks. Is there somewhere else I can go solo for better xp?

Lvl 4 eh?

hmm... try near orc lift, just go over the rise a little and pick on the Orc Pawns and the REALLY weak Centurions there, but DO NOT go much further away from the lift than just over the slope, Centurions spawn near/on the path regulary.

At lvl 5, try getting up further away a little or even try the Orc camp itself

Hope that helps =)

STRATERGERY FOR GFAY!! ;)
(For casting classes)

1) Turn of auctions, just lags you out.
2) Get a Clairty
3) Go to orc hill and kill 'em
Note: If you can summon a pet, do. But it is not necessary if you get a HP buff from a friendly cleric or druid.
4) Once you hit lvl 9 go to CB and get a group!
