Lake Rathetear separates the Mountains of Rathe from the Southern Plains of Karana.
Around the lake are several areas of interest: Some vendor outposts, a fishing village,
as well as established camps of orcs, gnolls, aviaks, and ogres.

In the depths of Lake Rathetear you will find some of the more dangerous inhabitants.
Among them, the dark elf, Deep, and Lord Bergurgle of the aqua goblins.

Madman Monk for Necros (13-18)

Necromancers,
Can't figure out what to hunt at 13?
There is a monk NPC in lake rathe that is around level 15.

Make sure you have Engulfing darkness, Heat blood, Leach, fear, lifedraw, dark pact, and two other spells of choice. I'd suggest the level 1 and 4 dots.

Gather shadows to get there and get far enough away that you wouln't aggro him, he may not be KOS to you, I know he wasn't to my erudite necromancer.

Dark pact yourself and get full mana, then convoke shadows for a pet. If you have a weapon to give your pet, it will help a lot. Med up to full and ready yourself for the fight.

Now there are a few ways to confront him, but in whatever way you do, remember that your pet is a VERY bad tank for this guy, and so are you since he hits hard and fast, but doesn't have much HP compared to other mobs for his level.

My way to fight him was get back behind the monolith so you have a good distance inbetween him and you. Pull with darkness, then send pet in a split-second before the you cast fear. Once fear sticks hit him with every dot you have, start with heat blood and then do leach and the rest of them. This is my way of killing him which is pretty effective, there are other ways. Find a way that suits you.

Remember that at 13 you may die on the occasion, but it is great xp for the level.
Druids vs Aviak Guards
# Nov 21 2000 at 8:58 AM Rating: Default
I came here as a lvl 20 Druid and had little difficulty taking 3-spawn island because of the excellent Harmony spell.

Using Harmony I could walk right up the the top of the 3-spawn tower and Harmony all three Aviaks, pick a juicy one and pull it down to the bottom.
Easy pickings.
Only thing to beware of is one of them respawning between you casting harmony and pulling your chosen victim. They do respawn fairly quickly here.

Also useful here is to keep Levitate up (assuming you have enough Bat Wings) so you can escape across the water to the zone boundary into Arena.

If you are not a druid then try & find one to group with. We are very useful people to have around :)

If you make a trip to Lake Rathe in the near future, fellow EQers, I would ask you to investigate an area of Lake Rathe about which little is known and seemingly even less is written.

As proud owners of the spell "Enduring Breath" we shammies have the abilities to explore areas that are difficult if not impossible for most of the other classes to reach-- underwater locations!

I, quite by accident, came upon a tunnel in the ground underwater on the backside of the island in Lake Rathe commonly known as "Flame Island", "The Diving Board", or "3 Spawn Island" while attempting to follow ol' Webclaw. If you slip through the gap in the hill to the other side of "Flame" and go into the water, right beneath you is a tunnel which leads off for quite a ways. Interestingly, it has two branches, one of which leads to an underwater castle. The other heads off to another island.

I got no further than looking at the outside of the castle because guarding it were Deepwater Goblins who conned red to me at L30. There were doors leading inside or perhaps to another zone along the base of the building.

My question is this: Has anybody any experience with this spot? And can they confirm the rumor that there is a dragon who lives inside?

There is no info on the other portion of this guide refering to zone strategies about this place. Maybe some of you high level chars can shed light on this mystery! By the way, Webclaw did not go inside, he continued on around the zone and judging by the /shouts going on, he proceeded to slaughter people by the dozens. He does drop the Water Crystal staff every time.

Most of the camps in this zone, including some I did not list along the north wall, have their own islands or peninsulas off the zone wall, so you are going to be swimming a LOT. If you are comfortable with swim kiting, this is the zone for you. It is easy enough to get lost in this zone, especially if you cant swim too well, so use sense heading and /loc a lot.
Soloing Aviak Guard @ 1-spawn (casters)
# Aug 25 2000 at 1:59 PM Rating: Excellent
A single Aviak Guard spawn is located in the SE corner of the lake, on the same ledge which holds the Stone Skeleton tower. This is the next ledge East from the Gypsy camp.

Set up at maximum root range and proceed with standard root-and-shoot tactics, using your biggest nuke. If you need to re-root and back away, avoid the Tower(see caution below). By the time I was a 24 wizard, I could usually take down the single guard in 3 to 4 shots. Spawn time used to be about 7 minutes, although that may have changed since the last time I was there.

I have seen many use this spot solo, Necros, Enchanters, Druids as well as melee types. I saw one druid lvl to 27 here, although personally I found the exp was getting too slow after 26. I soloed here extensively from lvls 22 to 26, with only 1 death early on.

Caution:
The only caution I have is to avoid the tower at this level, as it contains 2 casting Stone Skels (lvl 25 to 26) and their pets(low 20s). Bodies can often be seen around the base of the tower, nicely outlining the aggro radius of the Skels:) Also, on rare occasions, you may see the wandering Froglok, Prince K-something(forget at the moment), who may aggro on you depending on your Frog faction. He is a rare spawn though. I only saw him once in 5 lvls and easily avoided his path.
#Anonymous, Posted: Aug 23 2000 at 8:53 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I am a level 20 human paladin and i was with a group and we were camped near the undead ruins and gnoll camp in lake rathe. At midnight the undead spawned and we were just killing all kinds.. So when we were done we were looting and I looted small bronze vambraces off a skelton. I want to know is that rare or just a drop? i did not think that bronze would drop off a skelton.??

In the southwest corner of the zone there is a cove with some land and aviaks in it. From there you can swim east to the very end of the cove to find a dock and a shed. As soon as you hop out of the water be ready, a level 15 monk will attack you. He hits fast but not too hard. My druid soloed him from 19 to 23 when he stopped giving exp. Because he hits so often, being a monk, damage shields are key. You should either be a damage shield class or be a tank and group with one. A decent DS will account for between 25 and 50% of the damage done in an average fight against him. As a druid when he was still alive and I was almost OOM I just rooted him, treeformed myself and sat. When the root wore off he came and suicided on my thorns.

As a 16 enchanter this is a do-able camp solo. Go in invis, and sit on the back wall, out of aggro range. Create a pet. Cast RuneI and Blur on the pet, then mem the following while medding to full:

Color, Mez, Tashan, languide, quicken, Mem Blur, Choke, Sanity Warp.

Quicken your pet, Lead with a mez, followed by tashan and languide. Then Mem blur, while he is still mezd and follow with a choke. This will bring him, take a few hits till your rune1 is almost down WITHOUT attacking. Then back off, your pet will take over. Stay back till choke drops, then hit with one more choke. Count to 10 and follow with a sanity warp... this brings him back onto you, if resisted, allowing your pet to finish off, or kills him outright.
Breeze, Med, Repeat.

If you get into health trouble (IE He wont switch to pet) use color, followed by MEM blur, not mez, as he is eithor choking and your pet will wake him up.

Xp rocks from 16-18. 19 is kinda slow. Nice camp if you cant find a aviac guard spawn.
Soloing the Aviak Guards, (levels 19-25, mele classes)
# Aug 22 2000 at 8:52 PM Rating: Excellent
Always try to solo in this zone if you can, it is way better exp and loot then if you are in a group.

The Aviak Guards in here are levels 18-20, most of the time they will be level 18 (50%), about 35% of the time they will be level 19 and 15% of them will be 20. The only noticeable difference is that the level 20 version has 20% more HP then his counterparts.

If you are an evil race you can sell to the Ogre merchants near the Rathe Mountains zone and if you are good you can go to the Gypsies

In this zone there are a few good spots for exp and loot, the most notable of which are the Aviak spawns, 3 spawn (the island with the fire on top) 2 spawn (the island with one hut, the Arena entrance, the cove, and 1 spawn (near the Stone Skeletons).

You can start to solo here at level 19 if you have good equipment and as low as 17 if you are a super twink. At level 19 you can get 1 spawn (the best) or you can have one of the two Arena spawns, the problem with the Arena is that a lot of other people are always passing through and some will ks/train you.

At level 21 you should be able to take both of the Arena spawns, or if you are good you can break two spawn or the Cove (only try breaking the spawn if you can kill a high level Aviak with the loss of no more then 1.5 bubbles of HP.

At level 23 you are ready to reap in the exp by soloing 2 spawn, the Cove, or both Arena spawns (this is hard due to before stated issues and the fact that you are technically taking up two camps with one character, most people will argue for one of them making your exp CRAWL.

By the time you reach level 24 you are WAY sick of this zone but if you can find 3 spawn open (you will most likely need someone to help break it with you) you will get more exp here then you can imagine, and the money is SWEET. An average night (3 or 4 hours) here got me about 150-200 pp. I leveled here in a little over 3 hours.

At 25 –26 three spawn is good but you should REALLY move on and see the world, i.e. NPC’s if you are evil.

Good luck to you all in your journeys through the land of Norath and I hope this little guide to this fine zone helps you in some way.

At lvl 20 troll SK (very close to 21), i split 2 spawn WITHOUT harm touch, and I am most definately not a super twink. Barely took me over half life, and I didnt have a pet either. First, make sure you can solo aviaks with ease. Second, make sure neither of them is an even con (in my case they were both low blue, so it was lucky). To pull, you must fear one of them, so the other comes. If fear takes the first one out for half the fight, you should be fine. If not, either hope for it to work again or bust out the harm touch

As of the last patch (8/17)the spawn rate has increased in terms of Webclaw. He travels through Fire Island with regular frequency and is a level 24 NPC who drops the Water Crystal Staff. I saw him pass through 7 times in a 3 hours period, making the normal camping spot (at the base of the fire tower) a riskier proposition unless you are prepared to meet up with him.

This is some of the best hunting if you can get a faithful group from lvl 8 to 16ish. Run from what ever city you are in currently. Keep away from the over camped derv camps and caimen on the way. When you arrive in Lake Rathe go to arena and bind everyone. Now come back out of the tunnel and watch the sun set (thats why you paid that much for your video card, right?) OK, you will see a bunch of little aviaks all over in front of the arena entrance. Kill them. The aviaks will help each other but the 2 guards will not help the aviaks. The little birds range from lvl 8 to around 12 if I remember right. Once you hit 12 or so, you can head across the lake to either the orcs, or one of two bandit camps. The one nearest to Rathe Mountains has a higher frequency of Brigands, so you might want to watch closely before pulling there. Killing these are great faction, and loot. Not to mention Bandit sashes. You can hunt them till 16 or so. Now head on over to Rathe Mountains and start conning everything. If its yellow, kill it.

Got to agree brought my mage here at 9 and got to 10 (with no exp when he arrived) to 10 in 3 hours. I'm sure it will slow down around 11 but by then I will have found some more fun.

The guards drops up to 5gp, and bronze weapons not to shabby eh? ;)
