Located on the dark side of the moon, Hollowshade Moor is in a constant state of darkness and is the site of an ongoing struggle between owlbears, sonic wolves, and grimlings. Each trying to retain control over the land. It is also the site of one of Luclin's best views of Norrath.

After a full cycle the war with start itself after a short period of time. During the war each faction would send invaders to attack another factions. For example if you want the grimlings to win then wait for them to send invaders to the owl bears/sonic wolf and help them kill the defenders. Should the grimlings prevail the caves would repop with grimlings. Once the grimlings controled both the sonics and owls caves their prince will spawn in the outpost. Kill him to return the zone to normal.

If you help the sonic wolfs win then the grimling town will repop with sonic wolfs. Don't know what happen when the owls win yet.
What a pain.

This war bs is a major pain in the ***. Though its nice to see Verant having a go at dynamic content but the war is actually a huge zone wide nerf. No repop means that farming the named mobs for their drops and the owls for their pelt is much more difficult now. You can expect items coming from the Moore to increase in their gfay market value.

Well, this seems to be it. We now get only one cycle of spawns, and then have to domplete the whole war cycle. I guess Verant once again got upset that they leapt before they looked, and are taking it out on us. With the parts of the wolves, and owlbears needed for the Vah Shir wolf-bane weapons being no-drop, I don't believe that any of us will get that quest completed before lvl 35 or so. Lovely.

On a lighter note, Ahmon Guzim (sp?) the guy for the next part of the wold-bane quest is now stable in the Grimling Forest zone cave. So it appears that anyone that DOES manage to complete the wolf-bane weaps can now go on further. Congrats to those that have gotten that far, but I don't think I'll be joining you anytime soon. Guess I'll stick with the cleric.

It's almost amusing to me how when Verant tries to do something creative, innovative, and/or imaginative, they get flamed by those that the change or idea impacts. I'm not bashing you personally, Wraithchilde...this just happened ot be the 1,004th post I've seen that Verant was burned in ephagy for doing something to break up the monotony that doomed so many other games.

Don't get me wrong, i feel your pain on trying to collect parts needed for quests when the war is in the phase I DON'T need it to be in at the time but perhaps looking at it in a different way may help. With the war on, you can either hunt what you need or, if not possible, look for one of the named mobs that Verant gave us to find to get one of the several very nice items that drop in the Moor. I don't think I've been to HSM one time and not seen Gorehorn, Prince Skeritat, Ghowrig, Scarflank, etc. etc. up and ready to find. You have options if/when you can't hunt whatever it is you came here for. That being said, the phases of the war don't last so long as to make waiting for whatever you need unbearable...surely there are hundreds of other, MUCH LONGER, camps in EQ that make this one look like a picnic.

I mean sure, the war does get in the way sometimes but I personally would rather see more zones that have a constant story/change to them to make them unique like Hollowshade Moor than go into every zone in the game knowing every camp is going to be the same as it was last night with the mobs just standing around waiting for someone to come kill them. If every zone were like that, and this is just my opinion, I believe I would have grown tired of EQ long ago....and I thank Verant for giving me my needed break from reality; not bash them for trying to make it more interesting.

I almost feel I should post this multiple times to remind some people that without those 'leap before they look' dummies at Verant, we wouldn't have any zones to complain about...we'd all still probably be frying our brains playing something as dull and monotonous as Doom XXVII...or whatever number it'd be up to now...

Here here!! I couldn't have said it better myself and I'm glad i'm not the only one out there that thinks Verant gets little thanks and more complaints than 99.9% of all people would put up with. I'm surprised they have all said a collective "***** you" and locked us out of their servers.
Forgot to add
# Mar 10 2002 at 8:26 PM Rating: Decent
Oh - by the way - forgot to add that the "defenders" at the sonic and owlbear caves - summon. They can thus be difficult (three at once attacking and stunning you, summon when you run, stun when ytou try to gate - can be tricky even though all green. More fun from Verant.
Damned war

It appears to end the war you need to help the grimlings invade the owlbear cave and sonic wolf cave. They then take over the Vah Shir outpost - you must then get through the bodyguards (unmezzable, unsnarable, unrootable, but can be slowed and crippled - bad undercons) to get to Prince - then caves respawn - however - once owlbears slain, that's it - ditto sonic wolves - no more waiting for respawn - have to go though whole war cycle again (all for one damn perfect owlbear pelt too). Rallic Packs for all 32 of my characters now seems a harder task - sigh!

I'm not sure what has launched this war, but it appears that any of the three factions can be in domination, or perhaps the three factions rotate. Last night I was present for a broadcast of "A persistant howling echos from the East, and the Grimling Defenders prepare for an attack on the south shore. After this, I watched a train of 5 sonic wolves attach the circle of approximately 9 Grimling Defenders huddled in the main Grim camp to the south.

Later in the day, I observed a train of 5 sonics attack approx 5 Grimling Defenders that were stationed outside the Owlbear caves. I was not present for the preceding broadcast message at this time, however, when a sonic wolf made it into the opening of the cave, a broadcast of "Sonic wolves howl in triumph as they claim the territory".

It may be that we need to complete the entire cycle of ownership, Grims, wolves and then owlbears.

I killed the prince of the Owlbears during the war, so i doubt he is the trigger. If you kill the grimling Prince in the outpost you better loot super fast he gets takin by unseen grimlings to be rezed. He droped 2 short swords of the Swamp 13 31 no drop.

2 npc's in Shar VAl speek of tis war Animalist simol and Khala Dun Erelk otside a bar on the soulth side, heard a story about the wolves attacking the owl bears and Simol reporting the behavior of the animals in the moor.

I have been trying to figure out if it Player triggered event but have been unsucsessful
Good luck Hope this Helps Ragno 38th Bard Drinal

Killed the Owlbear prince in the outpost, caused the zone to repop with a bunch of owlbears, killed all the owlbears and cleared out the cave, they never respawned. Went over and killed all the wolves in the cave, they never respawned.

Helped the grimlings kill the attacking wolves,
zone message said the grimlins are rejoicing or something, but nothing else happened, they never tried to take over the fort, the chief wasnot up at this time, someone was just camping the chief and knew nothing of the war, so the chief was killed out of sequence im guessing. . .

Helped the grimlings invade the owlbear cave, but then again all we got was a zone message saying the grimlings won new territory or something. nothing else happened...

Still looking for answers on how to start and or how to stop the war...

The Great War

Ok, I got caught up in this little war, as I'm sure you've heard a bit about it lately.

Here is the intel:

We (me 45 paladin and a friend 35 warrior) decided to help the Grimlings. We caught on as they assaulted the Sonic Wolf cave. We assisted in killing the Sonic Defenders, once they were all dead the Grimling enter the cave and a message goes out that they gained new territory. Now all sonic wolves should be replaced by various Grimlings. Kill them if you want, but I dont believe it matters.

NOTE: Once the war is on, there will be no more respawns until it is over. Really ticks off a lot of people (perfect pelt anyone? <snicker>). So be ready for some tells.

At this point you will eventually hear a message that the Grimlings are moving to attack the Owlbears. Assist them in killing the Owlbear defenders, in general any attackers will lose the fight unless assisted. Once they enter the Owlbear cave, the chieftain gets real excited and calls the Grimling prince back to the area. He can be found in the Vah Shir outpost, which is now Grimling controlled.

Up until this point everything was green to me, upon conning the bodyguards at the new Grimling Outpost they were light blue. Not trusting any cons on Luclin I made sure I got a lone straggler. Turns out my instincts were right, she was one tough nut to crack. I was forced to use LOH from full health, and she got me down another quarter before she fell. The bodyguards are furious casters and appear to gate back to their spawn point when close to death (quick to come back though). She had the regular Acrylia runes on her, four of em. It was at this time that my warrior friend got to close to the guards at the door and was killed <mourns>.

I almost followed, but made it to the SV zone close to death. Then an emergency patch forced us to camp.

The prince was inside the camp, with about two to four more bodyguards. I have heard from this site that he dropped a staff 11/30 or something. Not sure. We were curious as to how the war was ENDED, and that was the ultimate goal. It is possible it is TRIGGERED (begun) by the killing of the owlbear prince, at least after his death is when the messages started coming in. Which was shortly after a GM had repopped the zone to clear the previous unresolved war.

The defenders at all camps SUMMON, but do not move. I found that if you start on one side they wont summon and you wont get bounced around. They usually pop in threes, with the Grims being the exception, seven or so.

All in all, it is a very exciting thing to get involved in. Hats off to Verant for this one, they did a good job.

Keep in mind, if the prince owlbear is the trigger (not sure, and dont know how to make him pop)you might want to shout you are taking him down to warn players of the impending war. Wanderers escalate at this time, making it dangerous for some, and of course once the Vah Shir outpost is overrun, it becomes deadly to hapless young kitties and others players as well.

It would also be quite interesting to see if a different outcome would come out of assisting the owlbears or sonics in overcoming the Grimling defenders.

So get thee to the front soldier, there be a war a brewin'!

Bit of an update, killing the Prince does in fact end the war. Ended it today. Happy hunting!

p.s. conned green and was a toughie at 45, me and two guildies, monk and druid, took him down.

I'm not sure if killing the prince ends the war or not, I killed the prince ( the owlbear prince) and it repopped the zone, but after killing the new repops they never respawned and the zone messages continued with the war. So not sure how to end the war yet

Hey, just something to keep in mind. When it comes to Owlbears and Sonic Wolves, Shaman can cast Invis to animals. I often take my shammy on wolf pup hunts and use sense animals and invis to animals.

Hell, after a tough fight I can sit and med up with it on.

Just some friendly advice.
Scarflank?

Anyone ever saw Scarflank, possibly a named Sonic Wolf, wander in this zone?

It drops a neat item, Spiked Sonic Wolf Collar, nodrop, with lots of stats on it.

Thanks

Here some more info on some underconned creatures in this zone:
If you try to kill either the wolf packleader or the grimling chief and you dont make it, they will call some defenders (sonic wolf defenders resp. grimling defenders). They do not run at all, but they summon!. And they hit very hard. But they conned all green to me at 46. I died without any chance. And believe me, getting the corpse back, which is lying direct before the wolf cave is VERY dangerous.
Bears and Wolves
# Dec 14 2001 at 7:07 PM Rating: Decent
Both the Owlbears and the Sonic Wolves are underconned. The Rockhoppers and Beetles are also underconned. They con green to me, but they almost kill me everytime and if there's more than one of them unless I get lucky I'm toast. However, if you can kill the Prince of the Owl Bears or Ghowlik of the Sonic Wolves, then you can get some really good druid armor. Dirtchomp is a named Rockhopper and drops a claw for melee types, and Gorehorn is a named Beetle and drops a really good mask. Hope this helps. Just be careful, even a druid kiting at lvl 47 barely managed to take Gorehorn on.
Faction for turtles and herders
# Dec 12 2001 at 2:14 PM Rating: Decent
I forget to mention faction. I recieved only exp, no faction for turtles and herders. I didn't get any loot either, but I only killed 3 turtles and assisted on one grimling herder. There may be something that drops, but I wasn't able to play long enough to find out.
Tortoises and Grimling Herders
# Dec 12 2001 at 2:07 PM Rating: Good
Both conned blue to me as a 21st level Wood Elf Druid. The zone is full of both creatures, but there is a plethora of the turtles. Tortoises/turtles do not seem to frenzy, and don't aggro until attacked (at least on druids, may not be true for other classes as is the case with many animals). These turtles/tortoises (Yes, I forget the exact name) do bite with the weak poison effect. Casting the level 19 Endure Poison buff on myself seemed to prevent me from ever getting poisoned. If a friendly druid or shaman isn't around to cast that on you, you might wish to be a little more cautious. They can bite from anywhere from 2 to roughly 25 points of damage. All the turtles I saw on track were mostly dark blue, with a few light blue turles thrown in, but not many.

Grimlings herders do aggro, but it appears that they are not running around in packs/groups, which makes sense since they're herders. I think they're actually herding the turtles! They hit for anywhere from 2 to 32 points of damage and they hit fast! They can take you out fairly quickly if you're not full HP/Mana so if you're not so hot on soloing, make sure you have a partner. Plus, all the Grimling herders conned dark blue to me. I'd recommend using a root or slow tactic on them if you're a caster, and if you're not, either have a buddy with you to melee, or a buddy who will heal you as you fight.

I'm at the low end of 21 if that helps anyone figuring out how they'd con to you. I would consider the Grimlings and undercon. They should have been yellow to me at lvl 21 in my opinion.

There were so many of these things on track (both mobs) that I imagine it would be fairly simple for folks to zip from 21 to 23 in this zone. I didn't go very far into the zone though, so there may be some higher/lower critters in there.

# Dec 09 2001 at 6:46 PM Rating: Good
I came here at 32 to look for something to kill, and just up the trail i found wandering Owlbear Razorbeaks. They conned blue to me, so being the guttsy warrior i am, i tried one. First off, they run fast, not like SOW fast, but faster than me. They hit hard, it seems most mobs in this zone are waayyy underconned, he scored a hit for 92 on me. They use a 65dd stun spell a lot, it gets resisted most of the time, and it does have a little cast time, so if you're running from them, they will stop and cast, but quickly catch up to you again. Just a little info...hope it helps.
