This massive seven-floor tower is located on the second island of Iceclad. It is clear that something terrible once happened to the inhabitants of the tower.

Littered with undead scholars, priests, travelers and shades, one must make their way up floor by floor with a different key necessary for each floor up. On the top floor is Tserrina, inciting terror on the rest of Frozen Shadow. Contrary to rumors, there is no eighth floor.

Various keys grant you access to each floor of the tower:

Everquest Guide Keys to the Tower of Frozen Shadow (OLD)

Crystal Key - 2nd floor - a large undead gnoll
Three Toothed Key - 3rd floor - an angry librarian
Frosty Key - 4th floor - an enraged shadow beast
Small Rusty Key - 5th floor - Cara Omica
Bone Finger Key - 6th floor - an enraged relative
Large Metal Key - 7th floor - VhalSera
Tserrina's Key - Master Key - Tserrina Syl`Tor

I been in the ToFS all week. When we got to the third floor the key spawn popped after a few kills. 4th floor we got lucky whoever died before us spawn Cara so we didn't have to deal with that. 5th Floor Enraged Relative was up instantly to the moment the Priest died. Since this has been an all week affair we decide to just grab a second set of keys. 1 & 2 piece of cake!!! 3rd floor 3 days seven cycles NO KEY!!!! Each time we gave up and moved up. No Cara and we didn't bother finding her place holder that makes her spawn. 5th floor guess the relative didn't attend the funeral!!!! So very little has been said about floor 6! Bring a full group and not a low level group. Mind you we are just there to get keys for an upcoming event and the tower is below our level 50+. Well 6th floor kicked us hard, 2 deaths from the trapped room with icey shades and then getting Vhe'Sera down to 18% we had to EVAC! Between him flying around, twirling, charming, summoning and blinding us while his three bats reaked havoc we ran out of mana and hit points. Druid save us a lot of headaches with evac. So tonight we go back hoping to have a better handle to face Vhe'Sara and then the Queen at the top. Dang all I want is the keys!!! For the record we ranged from 56 to 47 and we did get experience!

Any tricks to the 3rd floor is much appreciated!

Actually, if you get pulled to say, 4th floor by someone in party that is keyed to that point, then you loot cara's key (rusty, and click group to 5th floor, you can now access all floors up to 5th, even though you never had keys for 2 - 4. This works, and always has.

The key Tserrina has just allows you to skip all the intervening floors, and go directly to top level w/o having to click through each floor, crawl/invis across, and click for next floor.

Information is not correct.

once you kill terrisina the Boss mob you then can aquire a MASTER key. and if memory serves me the 3rd floor is the one with all the traps. and has a 2 mob trigger for it. I could be wrong but hey.

but you can add keys to your keyring to each floor but to use the mirror to the left on the first floor you have to Kill terrisina. good spot for fun though.

the 4th floor is the one with all the traps. Also on 3rd floor the miror the puts u outside the tower is where i always find the key it was easy for a 42 shammy 32 beastlord and 43 bst. GL with keys people (u probaly found key by now tho).

I'm pretty sure that when you use a key to a floor you also get the keys to all the previous floors added to your keyring: when I type /keys, all it says is Tower of Frozen Shadow: 5, not Tower of Frozen Shadow: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. So you probably only need to get keys on the fifth floor and then can use any mirror up to the 7th.

I think we actually tested and verified this about nine months ago when XPing there, but I may be mistaken.

Anyone ever cast Identify on any of the keys? There may be a hint in that, often is. I am willing to accept there is no 8th level, but I do believe there is a portal that goes somewhere other then outside.

A picture I took while exploring the world file for ToFS with EQ Zone Viewer. With ghosting and flying on, there were only 7 floors. There was also a tiny room with coordinates, like in every zone. Picture is above. There is no 8th floor in this zone. Perhaps there is another zone that the mirror might connect to, but 8th is not here.

Zone Viewer is a stand-alone program that looks at the zone graphic files that are on your hard drive. It doesn't let you play EQ or anything like that, but it's great for getting used to zones, making maps for strategies, etc.

Yeah you have to basically exterminate everything on the floor to get the keyholder to spawn. Killed him today, he spawned in the same room as the shadow beast cooks, make sure you kill the cook that sits in the corner of the room. Enraged Shadow Beast spawned after roughly 1.5 hours and about 3 cycles of clearing the floor. Doesn't always have to be Enraged Cook that drops the key. Good Luck

ToFS is pally heaven, I started soloing here at lvl 36 on the 1st floor, sure some of the fights can be tough but exp is excellent, got my 2nd floor key, and I have moved onto 2nd floor at lvl 37 again nice solo exp, very close to lvl 39 and I have'nt got my 3rd floor key yet, keys become soul bound now so even if you die (yup I've had a few nice trains, and died fighting ) you can use the portals to rez your corpse, the bonus for us pallys and also clerics is that everything in ToFS is undead so weps proc like mad and spells work very well here, I guess in a perfect world a cleric, Pally duo team would rock here, but soloing here as a pally/cleric can be fun and rewarding.

Thanks for the help:)

Once again we have a expansion, but this time they are adding new dungeons off old ones, Deepest guk for example is off one of the oldest dungeons in the game, it might be possible that the 8th floor could be a dungeon crawl zone. Or it could just be a lost cause LoL

I have to say that I think that the 8th floor really does exsist, I think that there is a quest involved somewere to gain entrance to it...I do think that it might very well be a zone seperate form the tower, they put that mirror in there for a reason and I can't belieave that it goes nowere I think that there is a quest somewere to unlock the mirror someone just needs to find it. The clues are there for those willing to look. I don't think that it's dungeon for LDoN though, think that that it has been there since the beginning of Velious.

Just use spells to single pull them. I don't know about the other floors, but I've noticed that mobs on the first floor are not social. If you hit one with a spell, it will come after, but none of the mobs near it will. This makes single pulling a breeze on the first floor. Also, it's worth mentioning that the lesser ice shades have trouble fitting through some of the doors. Just thought I'd mention that in case it comes in handy for someone.

Yes, it was figured out long ago. There is no eighth floor.

There are offline zone viewers that can be used to explore and view every bit of a zone, and they were used to solve this "mystery" years ago, when Velious was new.
RE: 8th?????
# Apr 25 2003 at 2:36 PM Rating: Excellent
Of course, that doesn't mean they can't make that last mirror zone you to some other zone somewhere else.

There are a TON of broken teleporters in Norrath, one in Everfrost, another in Mistmoore. There are also firepots in various areas that complain about you not having the key when you click on them. This could be yet another teleporter they may or may not ever use.

50 paladin trying to get keys for guild to do raid.
1 - done with group, we camped in the hall between the 2 mirrors once we cleared the main room and pit.

2 - near zone in point or invis to undead and run to zone out hall. Nothing ever spawned in that hall and I could safely pull to there with ease.
Took 5 hours of killing everything. I could keep about half the library killed when my luck was running good. Nothing on this floor saw thru my invis to undead. (lvl 51 now)

3 - slowly cleared my way to the cook room - pacify the 2nd mob, pulled first to hall (clear the 2 roaming shadows first) Once room clear (get on in 'closet' too) safe camp spot near where first cook spawns. Occassionally an armoured shadow spawned in the corner near the seceret passage. All 3 keys were spawned by killing the sleeping skelly.

4 - the zone in is not safe. If you are not jumped by one or all of the 3 wanderers (ooze, shadow and mummy) turn left and back left into the small alcove. Kill the (usually) shadow. Root to prevent adding wandering mobs. Respawn is aprox. 18 minutes and nothing ever aggrod on me in there. I moved thru the maze resting in the dead ends without harm unless visible from main hall. First camp - no named females at all. Several hours later, went back - killed the maggot infested ooze, then camped in coffin room. Got lucky and was in a hall when she spawned or would have been dead. Took 2 hours second time.

5 - Ah, the wedding was underway. I killed all the hall golems. Killed the zombies on the left before respawn of hall (20 mins on the nose). Next time I killed the right zombies. On 3rd golem in the next run, enraged popped. Barely made it. Should have rooted and nuked instead of melee. He hits too hard and too fast.
Camp right at zone in. Only problem was the mobs walked away into the wall and take forever to return. Nothing on this floor saw thru my invis to undead. (lvl 51 now) Aggro was very small except the one time i dragged my mule's corpse down the middle of the usher's hall way. Had 3 new friends to play root and park, lol.

6 - got the key but haven't laid eyes on it yet. Decided to run to town for the all valuable gate potion in my bank (where it does not belong, sigh)

hope this helps

Thanks.
RE: Level & Population Check

The first couple of floors are doable by a group in the low-to-mid 30's. As always, it depends a lot on who you're with and the skill of the puller, etc.

In my experience, on the Ayonae Ro server, this zone is not very crowded. However, it depends on what level you want. You could have a group of the appropriate level on each floor, however, usually groups come here to work their way up, and if you are farming keys the Library (2nd floor) tends to be a bottleneck, unless they've improved the spawn rate on the Angry Librarian since I hunted there.

I had several keys to ToFS but was missing a couple of the last levels when I was awarded the master key. When I used the left mirror it added to my keyring (/keyring shows: Tower of Frozen Shadows: 7) and supercedes all the other keys as expected. However, when I get to the mirror room all six of the mirrors lead outside (none were locked as I expected one to be), I thought there were express down mirrors to the floor you wanted so you could pass all the ones you don't want.

RE: How to get from 6a to 6b?

First, click on Maps and check out the EQ Atlas map of the 6th floor. Here's the route.

Take first right corridor. Fight your way past shadow beasts until you round corner and get to foot of stairs. Go up stairs and pull mobs there to bottom of stairs. Once way is cleared past stairs, HUG THE RIGHT WALL until you get to small set of stairs on right leading up to mirror room. (Hugging the right wall avoids agroing the shades on floor below.) Enter the mirror room and kill all the mobs there. Then click on the mirror to get to 6b.
Careful when you enter/exit tower

Shadow guardians patrol the outside of TOFS in Iceclad Ocean. They're aggressive, social, and hit hard. After one raid member lost invis, he somehow attracted a swarm of about 15 of these quickly, which wiped out four level 38+ characeters who didn't know enough to click the shimmery portal on the tower that takes you into TOFS.

I'm a 34 nec (the lowest level on the raid by far) and ran for the exit after taking some serious aggro from a beastie in TOFS. A shadow guardian jumped me as soon as I appeared in Iceclad and quickly whopped me down to 20% health before I got a Feign Death off.

Respect the Shadow Guardians.

Can anyone please tell me about the "keyring" that is in ToFS? I have the keys to levels 2-6..(5 keys) and see the text that says a key has been added to my keyring. Any help would be apperciated on what that is and what it does. Is there a way to condense my 5 slots to like....1?
RE: Keyring
# Dec 03 2002 at 1:31 PM Rating: Excellent
The Keyring is not unique to TOFS, it's supposed to work for all keys, or at least some of them. When you use a key, it's added to your keyring, and after that you only have to click the locked door to open it.

This has been a problem in TOFS, because you'll be fighting near the mirror and accidentally click yourself somewhere nasty by accident.

My keyring also accepted the key to Old Sebilis, I am not sure but the keyring may only work on NO DROP keys.

You can see what keys you have by typing /keys.

If it works right, you can throw away all your TOFS keys now. But it's been buggy in the past, and I'm not quite brave enough to destroy my keys. I do keep them in the bank though.
RE: Keyring
# Feb 06 2003 at 6:04 PM Rating: Decent

I dont know if this is the info you are looking for in regards to this questions but I went into ToFS to see about putting the keys on my keychain and hopefully open up 6 spots in my bank where all these ToFS keys have been sitting taking space. I was told by a buddy that only some of the keys went to the keychain. I had a complete set of all the keys from here including Tserinnas.

Well for those of you that have gone all the way to the top and have Tserinnas key, you will be happy to learn that once you click on the 2nd floor mirror youll get a message that the Master Key 7 (Tserinnas Key) has been added to your keychain. I then ran around thru the first few floors and even went to the 7th floor express mirror on level 1 and it all worked w/o having to hold a key anymore. I dont know how it works for not having all the keys but it sounds like you have to get Tserinnas to bypass the rest.

Good luck

# Feb 10 2003 at 1:08 PM Rating: Default
Ok to update my update on this...

My guild and I have a new crew of characters who are in the mid 30's and ready to head up the tower but we are having to do the grunt work on keys. Several of us have the 2nd and 3rd floor keys. They are NOT added to your keychain when you use them. I assume this means that you have to go all the way up and kill Tserinna to get the Master Key and that is the only one that adds to your keychain. However, as I learned on my main, once you have the master key you dont need the other keys.
RE: Keyring
# Feb 10 2003 at 3:57 PM Rating: Decent
They keys *are* automatically added to your key chain when you use them.

I have currently been as far as level five and I have looted the key drop on each floor. I have destroyed every one of the keys so far after I used each for the first time, and now I simply click on a mirror to go through again.

Myself and some guildmates did this last night. I had destroyed all my previous keys but I clicked the mirrors all the way up until we got to level 4 where I looted the next key from Cara. Used that to get us to level 5 then destroyed the key.

If I type /keys, It says ToFS: 4, and I have no keys on me or in the bank, so I don't quite understand the problem you are having. Maybe you should /petition for some help.

Or have others had a similar <unfortunate> experience and if so .. is it rare ?

RE: Was this unusual - A bug ?
# Feb 10 2003 at 4:02 PM Rating: Decent
Yes, I was in a group where one of us was summoned to the top floor. We were on the first floor at the time, near the mirrors.

This only happens when Tserrina is up, which can only happen if someone has forced her to spawn and then either died or left the tower. If you have a tracker in your group, make a check when you enter. Maybe best to leave it for another time unless your group has the master key and can pop straight to the top to take her on.
Be aware - Summoning from anywhere !
# Nov 23 2002 at 4:57 AM Rating: Decent
There I was - quietly minding my own business - <well trying to kill her mobs on the 5th floor> when I get Summoned from the 5th Floor entry area to an unexpected appointment with the lady Tserrina herself on lvl 7. I was Nowhere near lvl 7 !!

As a <now solo> 46 monk - it was a brief meeting !

Corpse retrieval was a SERIOUS problem given the fact that I did not have keys past lvl 5 !

Thanks to a kind Druid who had a master key I can tell this story without too much bitterness - as I have my corpse back - but PLEASE BE AWARE my experience is that she can summon from ANYWHERE !!!! :(

Is this unusual ?
This makes TOFS a VERY dangerous place ! since CR without keys to a lvl you haven't been to is a problem to say the least!

A sad sad tale from this perspective - have others had a similar experience ?
