100% of creatures in this zone are arbitrarily flagged to be immune to charm, because I guess, combined with very few rares and poor layout, they didn't actually want people to hunt in this zone.
Oh, and when you zone in, you're in water and surrounded by KOS creatures.
This is basically an "FU, we hate all of you players", zone.

I dropped down into the well, and spent half an hour banging my head against the well wall. Is there some magic that I am missing?

drop to loc level x,y,17.25 head south in to fake wall hope this helps
I would look up eq resource quests there as they have maps that will help. It might not show the exact spot which is tricky anyway but it will help at least get you in the right area

There are 2 places in the Well where you can zone out into the Grounds.
The first is a bucket at the bottom of the well shaft that you came in through, click and get out.
The second is on the far east side, behind a stalagmite, another bucket, just laying on the floor, click to get out.

Just starting to do this part of progression and in the interest of sharing:
The well zone-in is in The Grounds. Drop down the well in the south of the zone near The Gardener. You DO need invis. You will zone at the top of the well, and there is water with several mobs below. Drop to the bottom and go thru the secret wall southbound into the tunnels.
No trash appears to see invis. Dtaemi is on the east side. He's near a couple of mobs but not close enough to aggro if you're careful.
