Located beneath the Fortress Mechanotus, the Steam Factory is filled with Meldrath's minions. Gnomes supporting Meldrath are in charge of operations in the tunnels. They are tasked with keeping things running at levels meeting Meldrath's expectations. Steamworks can be found in all areas of the tunnels, helping with manufacturing, mining, or guard patrols. Minotaurs provide slave handling and brute labor.

The brownies of the tunnels receive the dubious honor of being the lowest on the chain of command and receive the most hazardous duties. However, a small group of the brownies have broken away from working for Meldrath and are working day and night to thwart the operations of the Steam Factory and the entire fortress.

...is from Fort Mechanotus. From the zone in, pretty much head directly West.

Is there a quest or key needed to zone in here? I can't find any mention of one anywhere, but I can't get in.

No quest or key needed. You go up a short ramp and sort of fall down a tube. At least that's what it looked like to me.

Good luck. You just haven't tried the right spot.

faction questing here

ok here's the deal.... several high end rk2 spells are sold at the brownie vendors here on "rebel brownie" faction.
when you zone in follow the hallway and you will find a panel taken out of the wall in one of the hallway rooms, you have to be shrunk to get into it but follow the tunnel to the rebel brownies and you can get a quest from Millick.
follw spam and he gives:

Browniebot XVII quest:

Find a used clockwork driveshaft 0/1
Find a used clockwork spring 0/1
Find 4 tarnished screws 0/4
Give Millick a used clockwork driveshaft 0/1
Give Millick a used clockwork spring 0/1
Give Millick 4 tarnished screwes 0/4

reward:
Faction
Experience

well this should be a challenge ...... this faction camp is gonna hurt..... but i CANT wait for Tome of Harrow Rk.II!!!!!

good luck all

"Used Clockwork Driveshaft" and "Tarnished Screws" are drops from various mobs. I would assume the Used Clockwork Spring is as well.

Since it says 'find' for the three quest items, it is possible that the items are ground spawns. The other quest giver in the room with Millick gives a quest which says to 'loot' stuff. I assume there is a reason for the difference in quest requiurements. As for finding the ground spawn (if it is a ground spawn), gl. Most of the mobs in the zone do not see invis, but I found one, Foreman Bronzecoat who does, and has a pretty generous aggro range. He hit for 4896, and there are four adds with him.

I have been exploring The Steam Factory and been in every room, except for the room with Exterminator Mark V, who was up, scowling, and saw invis. I didn't get a good look at a few of the other rooms with nameds who saw invis and killed me, but I tried and went back with an eye in one to look around. I didn't see any ground spawns except for Gnomium Sample in a north central room. So while it is possible that the three quest items are ground spawns they appear to be well hidden, and someone else is going to have to find them.
Chanter haste

got him twice, its the first minotaur at the top of the catwalks if you are coming from the ZI. He does hit for 6k, single target 4kdd knockback. Maybe 300k hp. Even with a 23k tank, had to use at least three healers. Dropped
Sash of the Slavers, 400 hp / mana caster belt with lots of stats and clicky maelin's methodical mind, and
Polished Horn Ring, melee ring with 28ac 390hp 380mana with also lots of stats and clicky form of defense 3, and focus Thorren's Extraplanar Inspiration II (reduce mana cost of beneficial spells by 13%, up to lv 80)

Named
# Nov 16 2007 at 6:17 AM Rating: Decent
Went exploring here today with a group. Scouted a couple named in the slave pits. Ironhorn and Slavemaster Gork. Group set up in safe hall before pits and we singled Ironhorn. Unfortunately, we were unable to kill, triples for 6k with an ae stun that was making it hard to keep heals up. We will go back once all of us are 80. Pretty fun zone though, like the brownie tunnels.
