This is the EverQuest tutorial zone. It is intended for characters levels 1-10, though it won't actually kick you out until level 15. In the zone-in area, you will find many helpful NPCs, several spell merchants, a banker, a corpse summoner, and some task starters.

On Progression servers, it's available when Gates of Discord unlocks.

A clan of kobolds has taken over control of the Mines of Gloomingdeep and have enslaved a number of goblins in the process. There is also a spider den in the south you should be wary of; enter at your own risk. And watch your step upon entering kobold territory. Don't fall into the pit!

This zone has no direct entrance. Once you have exited the zone, either by taking the exit to Crescent Reach or by telling Arias 'I want to leave' and being transported to the Plane of Knowledge, you may re-enter the Mines of Gloomingdeep a few different ways.

If you are level 10 or lower, you may re-enter by going to the character select screen and choosing "Enter Tutorial". Alternatively, you may tell Secalna Galnor 'send me back'. After reaching level 11, should you leave the zone, you can only get back into the Mines of Gloomingdeep if you are bound there, and then only by gating or dying.

Players are forcibly expelled from the zone upon reaching level 15. This occurs, somewhat unpleasantly, by being forced to log out. At that point, when you log back in you will zone in to the Plane of Knowledge. Attempts to gate to the Mines will instead take you to PoK.

Brief answer: no
But if it is the "achievement" you seek, I think there is an NPC in PoK who helps resolve that.

[Wed Apr 24 13:36:09 2013] McKenzie the Younger says 'Waaaagh! Oh! Ye gave me quite the start there, friend. I thought one of those blasted kobolds had snuck up on me. I nearly even chipped the [augmentation] I just found.'

[Wed Apr 24 13:37:22 2013] McKenzie the Younger says 'As my old man once told me..' he starts to ramble monotonously about his father's friend, '*blahblah* ..so Morden's cleanin' his fingernail with his dagger when it slipped.. *blah* blood everywhere.. *blah* ..did he learn his lesson? No!.. *blahblah* ..scratching this little gemstone, with his dagger when it merged!.. *blah* ..power.. *blahblah * ..and - Hey! Are ye [listenin]?!'

If ye [embed] it in a weapon or a piece o' armor, it can make that item more powerful. Mind, ye can't put an augment just anywhere. Ye need ta look at your armor and make sure the augment'll fit properly. If ye examine it, ye'll see what type o' items ye can attach it to.'

Your task, 'Hotbars' has been updated.
You've completed the tutorial on Hotbars!

Reward is: Worn Totem. This is probably the best reward in Gloomingdeep for characters that can't cast movement speed spells. Lets you run fast(er) for 5 minutes every ten minutes.

I forgot to write down the quest requirements, but they were to talk to Basher Alga (the second hail above) and to learn more about hotbars. I'll try to remember to write them down next time.

There is a new quest in Gloomingdeep: Mastering Achievements that shows up in your Achievements window under General/Special. You can shroud down to level 5 or 10 and say "send" to Secalna Galnor in PoK and be sent to the tutorial. Locate Scribe Farquard (male halfling) between Wijan (merchant) and Xenaida (maps) Hail him and accept the task Achievements, there will be several dialog/ information boxes and when done your reward is 10 silver pieces and 5 points credited to Achievements.

Gloomingdeep achievements can be learned in the series "Out of Gloomingdeep." You get them from Secalna Galnor in PoK, next to the Loyalty NPC, Alerynril the Loyal. Both are on find.

Crescent Reach should be added as one of the connected zones, since that is accessible from the cave. It should be also noted that this zone has no entrance other than Gating (if bound there and under level 15), logging into it (if level 10 and under). Also, upon reaching level 15, you will be forcibly expelled from the zone, and attempts to Gate there will result in being transported to PoK.

I'm new to EverQuest, so I started with the 14-day free trial. In the trial, you appear to only have access to the Mines of Gloomingdeep. When I started my subscription, I noticed a few changes. For one thing, it appears I needed to start my characters all over again. I need to double-check on this, but I don't seem to have access to whichever server they were on during the trial phase. Also, in the trial version, there is no big exit to the Plane of Knowledge from the main cave. Also, there is no Corpse Summoner (EQ Mob:a priest of Luclin - it's not needed, I guess). Additionally, now that I'm on a paid server, the mobs are dropping new items which I haven't seen before - mostly crude armor items. Also, the trial version didn't have the post-combat timer (whatever it's called). If I spot any other differences, I'll try to remember to post them here.

As far as the apparently lost character, I wouldn't sweat it too much. There's nothing in the tutorial which is devastating to lose, except maybe your time. But getting back to whichever level you were is a matter of an hour or two, probably less. That's the nature of the free trial. I've never used the free trial, but I presume you can't do stuff like trade with other players. It truly is a "trial." Just be happy you now have the full version and look foward to many exciting nights playing EQ.

P.S.

I don't think you're actually on any server during the free trial; I think you're just in an independent game free of servers. I believe.

I'm not sweating losing the character, although I may look a little harder for it just to make sure that it's gone. It's actually been easier leveling the 2nd time around. This time I know what I'm doing (for the first few levels, anyway). As far as being connected to a server, I assume that I must have been, because I wasn't the only player there. I surely hope they weren't all connecting to my home computer! Actually, there were more people in the Mines on that server than there are on the one I chose to use after I bought a subscription.

In the slave revolt camp there is a wooden doorway all the way in the back. I'm fairly sure that you have to run into it (you may have to just click it now) and a window will pop up asking if you want to leave the tutorial. If you click yes it should take you to Crescent Reach (I'm pretty sure this is where it takes you now, it used to be PoK). From Crescent Reach (which is the "real world" out of the tutorial) you will have to zone to the Blightfire Moors, but be careful and get an invisibility, and from there you can find a book to PoK down the road towards Stone Hive. From PoK you can go to pretty much any starting city. Alternately, if you log off and wait a few hours when you log back in you will have the ability to use the "Return Home" button which will take you to the starting city you chose at the time you created the character. Hope this helps.

Open the jail doors like you open any barred door. Most keyboards -- just mouse click the door. If you are trying to use the U key as is default I think, you have to move around some to get them to open. Mouse click is easiest with any door that isn't solid.

Gloomingdeep is the tutorial zone that was brought out to help people start new toons in the game. If you play the zone for all it's worth, you can have a toon over tenth level, basically equiped and some starting cash in less than 4 hours.
If your like me and played old world EQ, it took days and/or weeks to get that far.

Starting city, choose a starting city, this is where you will have to return for certain missions later in life, I personally like choosing the old world city's over Cresent Reach, but I'm old school like that.

There are 25 missions you can do, and you start your character at the first one, "Jail break!" If you have buffs, cast them on yourself before you hit the guard. I've never heard of anyone failing this mission, but you never know.
When you complete the Jail Break mission, you are ported to the slave camp.

Talk to Arias to get the next mission, "Basic Training". Take this time to set up your Character's UI. Then talk to each of the quest people and do they're task. When you have talked to them all, go talk to Arias again and you recieve a "Kobold Skull Charm" There are seven task in all, including the first and last talk to Arias.

(1) Arias, find function
(2) Absor, weapons upgrades, *note hand him your weapon and he polishes/sharpens it, bring him a chunk of bronze or a chunk of iron and he upgrades it again, three upgrades possible.
(3) Vahlara, armor, *note, she has an extra mission you can get, gathering Gloomingdeep silks to trade for burlap armor.
(4) Xenaida, maps
(5) Rytan, spells, *note, he will give casters a basic spell, he will also cast "Gloomingdeep Guard" on you when you /say bless to him. I always make a hotkey for this,

Line (1) /target Rytan
Line (2) /pause 4
Line (3) /say Bless me Rytan, so I can kill some more Kobolds!

You can use this buff for heals also, if you can make it back to Rytan.

I also make an "Open" hotkey to open barrels and chest. This is much faster than beating on them.

(6) Prathum, communication

* note, while your in this area, you can do the mission, learning to swim with Poxan, the Gnome beside the bridge, you can get a crappy sword too, but he gives you a Kobold leather mask for your help.
The drake "Flutterwing" gives you the mission "Flutterwing's Dilemma", but it requires a bit of leveling before you can do it, but you can get the mission now.
The soulbinder "Rashere" binds you to the spot you are standing on when you "/say bind my soul" to him. This is the spot you will return to when you die or gate.

(7) Arias, finish mission and get the charm

There are also Spell vendors, a basic merchant, a banker, a baking task to increase your baking skill and get free food. Hotkeys help here also.

Line (1) /say rat steaks

Cheap and easy way to get your baking to 15 trivia and get a couple stacks of delicious Rat Steaks for the road of life ahead!

A new feature in Gloomingdeep is the Corpse Summoner, "A Priest of Luclin".
/say Aid to him and he will summon your corpses to your feet.
*NOTE, PLEASE target your old corpses after you loot them and type
/decay corpse
Ridding the zone of old corpses cuts down on lag in the zone for our friends with slowwer connections. A lot of the older players don't know about this and you can show them up in the guild lobby later.

Barrel Raiding. You can loot barrels for their contents by opening the barrels, I use the hotkey /open to do such. Barrel loots include; Arrows, water flask, iron rations, small sacks, backpacks, and forlorn bows. The bows sell for 1 plat and 2 gold, so you can slowly rack up some cash. Also, killing and looting Spirtweaver and Plaguebringers for they're staffs is good plat too, 3 pp, 4gp, 4sp each.

Leaving Gloomingdeep. There are two ways out. First is the exit, it takes you to Cresent Reach, I have never had it take me to my starting city.
Second, talk to Arias and /say ready to leave , he sends you to the Plane of Knowledge. You can go out to purchase Potions and items from the bazaar. Distillate of Skinspikes for your level are a BIG help, as are Haste and Clarity pots. Shields, earrings, rings, neck pieces and weapons help too. You can also get better buffs in PoK too.

Returning to Gloomingdeep. Two ways to do this also.
First, gate back, if your class allows and you have the spell. Note; Vicar Thiran in the PoK library sells it, as does Tinker Gordish in Gloomingdeep.
Second, camp out and select "Tutorial" for the toon.
You can do either of these until make level 16, at which point you get kicked out to PoK.

Group as soon as you can, if makes all the task go faster and your can share loots.

Armor and weapons. First, get all the burlap armor you can from Vahlara, just trade her your looted/bought gloomingdeep silks. They drop from various spiders, but since the tradeskill upgrade, they seem to drop most commonly off the lurkers. Class specific armor drops from various kobolds around the pit and in the warriors hallway, but the named mobs drop the weapons and best armor, pants and chest pieces are quest rewards.

List of Quest;
(1) Jail Break!
(2) Basic Training
(3) Rally with Rahtiz
(4) Clearing the Vermin Nests
(5) Rebellion Reloaded
(6) Spider Caves
(7) Arachnida
(8) Spider Tamer Gugan
(9) Arachnophobia (group)
(10) Busted Locks
(11) The Battle of Gloomingdeep
(12) Sabotage
(13) Kobold Leadership
(14) Scouting Gloomingdeep
(15) Goblin Treachery
(16) Freedom's Stand (group)
(17) Flutterwing's Dilemma
(18) Pit Fiend (Group)
(19) Saving from Slavery
(20) Poxan (swimming)
(21) Vahlara (Cocoon silk mission)
(22) Vahlara (Gloomingdeep Silk mission)
(23) Frizznik (baking)
(24) Absor (polished weapon to bronze)
(25) Absor (bronze weapon to iron)

There are four slaves in the Jail area near Ruga, /say escort to them and they will follow you. You can arm them and buff them. Return them to Arias and he will reward you with a chunk of iron, used to upgrade weapons. Or just keep them for some extra firepower. You will have to kill everything in your path, because they aggro everything near-by.

Pull Ruga from a distance, to the left, right or center of his room, his bodyguards appear and will add if close enough. Spike pots really help with Ruga, Overlord Gnikan, and the Pit Fiend, Krenshin.

Spider Queen, Pit fiend, and Overlord Gnikan all have loot chest. Gnikan's is behind a curtain behind his throne.

There is an underwater tunnel that leads to and from the slaves camp and the Jail area, at the end of this tunnle are two bruizer revolt scouts, Zajeer and Kaikachi, each has two level four missions, some of the more fun missions btw.

Hope this helps!

The other way is the cave which leads to Crescent Reach - NOT the desirable zone for newbies or bazaar mules, as it's dangerous to get to PoK via running.

not sure if this was said already didnt read all the way down but the spiderling silks you can turn into to the armorer and she will turn it into armor that you can sell if you have better or same for conciderable more then the silk itself. think the silk go for 1sp and the lowest i seen silk armor was 6s most was over a 1gp so you do the math not bad for a couple seconds more doing turn in. thats my 2 cp on the subject.
Newbie money tips

I started a necro on the FV server for a change of pace when I'm not necessarily in the mood for hunting with my high 60s toons on my main server. Don't know anybody on the server and it's kind of nice starting from scratch without being tempted to twink...although the options available still make it a lot easier than it was years ago. :)

So if anybody is doing this or is a true "newbie" to EQ, here are some ideas to get some pretty decent pp to equip yourself at the beginning:

1. Loot all the barrels you come across (Target the barrel using F8 and use "open" from the abilities menu rather than beating on the barrel - much quicker). Inside you'll find food and water (put these in the bank for future use...every little bit helps), arrows, large and small bags (put all but 2 large bags in the bank to free up inventory slots and sell the small bags) and most importantly bows. The bows sell for a little more than 1pp each to the vendor...arrows don't sell for much but they stack up to 100 so don't take up much room. Loot everything so that the "opened" barrel poofs and another one will spawn in its place. When your inventory is full of bags, run back and put the large ones in your bank and sell everything else...so you'll have 6 "open" inventory slots. If I see another person running around beating on the barrels you can move to another area...they're all over the place and usually nobody is "farming" them.

2. Kill all the caster mobs you run across (plaguebears and spiritweavers I believe they're called)...they drop a "staff" that sells for over 3pp each. Money adds up quickly this way...best place to look for these mobs are down in the jail area and the areas leading down there. Once again, most people seem to avoid these mobs and if they do kill them, they often leave the staves on the corpse to rot. Easy money...

3. Look for "Frizznik", the "tradeskills" NPC in the beginning area. Say "Rat steaks" (I made a hot button) and he'll give you some rat meat and cooking sauce...click on the oven and you can combine them to make "rat steaks" which are a "hearty" meal that gives +5 HP. Will get your baking skill up to 15 easily and I ended up making 6 stacks for future use...the hp won't see m like much but, once again, you won't have to be buying food for a long, loooooong time.

4. You'll get a quest at the beginning which yields a quiver...if you don't need it (like my necro), sell it for 1pp+.

By the time you're all set to leave the mines and continue your adventures you can easily have around 1000pp, enough large backpacks to fill up both your bank and regular inventory slots as well as enough food to last you for a looooooong time. Not quite as much water but it will still last quite a while too. It all adds up.

You should be able to outfit yourself quite well with the money you get doing this...research the newbie armor quests in PoK so you'll know which slots to concentrate on when doing your equipment shopping - weapon/offhand should be a main thing to look for. If you're patient you'll find some nice, inexpensive items to make your pp go farther - for instance I got a centi shortsword for 100pp (had started out with a ranger) on FV where the economy is pretty inflated. Patience pays off... What I usually did was did a bazaar search, using AC as the sorting factor and just looked for good, cheap upgrades that gave me the most bang for my buck.

Another thing I would suggest is this...as you level up in the mines you'll notice that your offense, defense, weapon skills are lagging behind because experience is so quick down there. Once you hit lvl 10 or so, concentrate on fighting Slavemaster Ruga (think that was his name) down in the jail area. He's still dark blue at lvl 11 and your skills (especially defense) will go up like crazy...good to try to get offense, defense and weapon skills as close to max for your level before going out "in the real world" - you'll notice the difference. While you're doing this, keep an eye out for more caster mobs in that area who drop those beautiful staves...keep adding to your bankroll. :)

Once you do leave and start fighting in Kurns Tower, PC, Netherbian Lair in early 20s, etc you'll be remembering the good ol' days of Gloomingdeep where the pp flowed like cheap wine in Neriak on a Friday night. But if you do these things I mentioned, you'll be equipped well enough to not have to worry about it until you get high enough to start getting some decent money again. Hopefully some will find this helpful. Good luck. :)
