This massive seven-floor tower is located on the second island of Iceclad. It is clear that something terrible once happened to the inhabitants of the tower.

Littered with undead scholars, priests, travelers and shades, one must make their way up floor by floor with a different key necessary for each floor up. On the top floor is Tserrina, inciting terror on the rest of Frozen Shadow. Contrary to rumors, there is no eighth floor.

Various keys grant you access to each floor of the tower:

Everquest Guide Keys to the Tower of Frozen Shadow (OLD)

Crystal Key - 2nd floor - a large undead gnoll
Three Toothed Key - 3rd floor - an angry librarian
Frosty Key - 4th floor - an enraged shadow beast
Small Rusty Key - 5th floor - Cara Omica
Bone Finger Key - 6th floor - an enraged relative
Large Metal Key - 7th floor - VhalSera
Tserrina's Key - Master Key - Tserrina Syl`Tor

So after successfully getting the keys, I've finally got to the wedding floor. I spent a long time killing things and never got the enraged relative to pop. I'm not sure if it was mentioned in any previous posts but I was getting fed up so I just clicked the port to the next floor and what do you know, it let me up. I'm not sure if it was a coincidence but I don't think they have that spawn anymore. Hopefully this helps some of the enchanters doing their epic in 2014+.

I am in the tower now and I had to kill the enraged relative to get the key to advance to the next level. I am not sure when this was fixed, but for now I did have to get the key to advance.

Just for the record, I did get the enraged relative to (finally) pop on the Vox server in September, 2014, but it did take about an hour or more. I wish I would have known that the keys are seemingly not required to move up through the tower. I could not get the efreeti, Vhalsera to spawn on the 6th floor, and I cannot click through to Tserrina's floor. :-/

Key #5 is all you need nowadays in ToFS
# Oct 19 2013 at 10:30 PM Rating: Decent
Post of Drael (April 21st 2003 'safe solo camp spots') below is accurate and allows you to grab keys up to #5

Now about #6, apparently so many people got spawns of the key holder inside walls that they just turned the mirror unlocked forever.
That means if you just follow east corridor and climb up to mirror, just clicking it empty handed takes you to last level for free.
(so it is quite possible that killing the icy shade with skeleton pet no longer spawn it since he became useless)

There, under the bridge a mirror takes you back to previous level (in case you need 'incoherent spirit' for its related quest)

In the back of last level a drovalg beast necromancer (have to kill bats to make it spawn) will drop a draconic thing for its related quest

There is probably a master key to grab, but nothing special spawned from bats for me for hours so i gave up. To help others on the way up, it may be better to stick to #5 key in keyring so you can access all levels (in case the #7 key only allows you to access the 2 last levels).

Ok, my mistake, it seems you need #6 key from that bat and icy shade + pet after all
The upper watery level it not the last level of tower it seems.

Ok, finally found the an icy shade with skel pet, killed it, went up and clicked mirror empty handed to reach upper watery area

Vhal Sera was just after bridge in first half of watery area
and dropped the metal key
(cons green at lv 65 !)

Before that I cleaned up watery area so icy shade + pet is definitely the trigger for its spawn
(but it spaws in watery area wich requires you to click the mirror upstairs empty handed - take east corridor)

The final mirror is not a mirror it s a red gem at back of watery level

So the change is instead of having weird spawns of vhal sera anywhere it spawns at precise location in large watery area, upstairs, behind unlocked mirror

Better clean up all bats before killing shade with skely pets to avoid tons of adds

The angry librarian isn't spawning on the 2nd level like it should be. I had to get up a few levels for a quest, but had someone come in and get the item for me since i was there for 3 hours and no librarian. He got to the wedding level, and i was binding sight on him, and he was mass murdering the level and pop the angry librarian 3-4 levels above where it should be spawning.

I do not recommend going into ToFS unless you have the keys, or a mage to CoTH you up.

Good luck!

This is the 35 hotzone, but if you come at 35 be prepared to be killing lots of greens on the ground floor while you wait for the 2nd floor key to drop. By the time you get the 3rd floor key, much of the 2nd floor will probably be greening out, too. I recommend loading up on future spells, buffing your tank merc, and coming at 23 or so. That way the ground floor will still be red/yellow when you start hunting for the required key.

If you're going to do this zone at all, you're better to do it this way: the EXP is absolutely mighty and it makes sense to make the most of it.

Uhm when they were discussing the implementation of the Hot Zones.

BTW my post was indicating that this was already used as a Hot Zone.

(thus indicating in a some what covertly way that laziness was evident)

HOT ZONE ?
# Sep 13 2008 at 8:25 AM Rating: Decent
No we are re using old hot zones? This was a HZ from December 5, 2006 to April 18, 2007, guess they thought that it would make up for having several new hot zones that are too difficult to get to, and filled with mobs not worth the trouble.

IF you have to run through many zones, many zone that can and will kill you to get to the newer HZ, at least they could have made the mobs slightly easier to kill (Nerf their hit points)and with far better loot.

But no, sadly I think this newer higher end zones, 50+ and up, won't get the attention that they intended for them to get.

The whole purpose of having the HZ's was to get people into zones that normally had zero populations in them.

Apparently some one was asleep by letting this zone become a HZ for the second time, especially since there are still other zones that could and should become a hot zone.

tsk tsk tsk,

What's a girl to do....guess go play World of War craft for the next six months, till the new hot Zones come out.

*cough cough* Third time, now.

I don't think it's laziness (ok, yeah, some part of me does), but if the stated purpose is to get people to go back to dead zones (which I also recall being the primary purpose), this zone is certainly still dead.

Just exactly who said that was the purpose ?

The current level 70 hotzone is Riftseekers. But nobody will ever say that is
an old unused zone. Seven nights a week, 365 days a year, it can be difficult
to get a good camp in there, when it not a hotzone.
Putting up a hotzone is something that can draw people away from other zones.

For anyone that started playing before the introduction of "hotzones", after
you reached 20, you started looking for the best experience you could find.
Zones like The Overthere, Dreadlands, South Karana, etc.

As far as I'm concerned, there is too many zones from all the additions when
a new expansion comes out. When you've maxed your level (80 right now), then
yes, you might want new places to go and new zones may quench your boredom.

Even when I reached level 71 with my first toon, I still have not had time to
visit each and every "old world" zone that is out there. We picked a zone with
good experience, got a few levels and moved on.
If anything, the hotzone feature gives people the initiative to travel and
explore zones that they may not have otherwise needed to visit.

I went to help a guy in Maiden's Eye once to hunt for a drop he needed. I was
level 68 and because I had never hunted in that zone, never needed to, he was
convinced I bought my toon from e-bay (chuckle).
Even with my other toons I am currently raising, I haven't been back there
since then. If it becomes a hotzone and I have toon at that level, then YES,
I will go back there (smile)

The obvious reason is to create a zone at each level marker which people can come to and group up instead of spreading out through the entire game getting nothing done. Everyone can agree that more exp is better goal than going off and doing your own thing and eventually failing, and that agreement groups people together in these zones thereby increasing interaction, availble classes to build good groups, and tricking people into thinking more people are logged in than actually are. That, is the reason, it keeps the game going. Whatever you do with it doesn't change fact of effect...

When using the master key from the first floor you get ported up to the mirror room. Click on any of the mirrors there will zone you out to Iceclad. There are no secret doors nor locked mirrors there. There may have at one time, but as of now, there aren't.

From there, if you want to fight Tserrina, you'll have to make your way back to the spiral staircase room again (invising past the advisor) and go through the secret door on the north wall in the room with the torches and drake things.

There's like four alcoves in that hallway, each with a chance of a bat in it. When each bat is killed a vampire (male or female) will spawn from its corpse. There's a chance that it will spawn Tserrina. Of all the times I've cleared the hall, I've seen Tserrina either not spawn or spawn only once. I've not seen her spawn twice during a single clearing. Theoretically it could happen, I just haven't seen it happen.

this zone is definitly an oldschool RPG tipycal donjon ...it s a real adventure to pass all the levels to attein the big boss . Getting the keys , killing the mini booses , making ure way up , it s really a good adventure for a group 45ish .

well i ve farmed it once i been hight level untill it doesnt worth anymore and what i can say is cara is on a timer and can t be poped . i heard pple poped it buy killing the mummy but i m 100% sure it s on a timer
all other mobs have phs

i heard pple entering the tower getting summoned at last level by tserinna , it only happens if someone tried to kill tserinna and failed , (if she has less then 80% life for sure ) so she summons anyone in the tower

the whole tower ( including last level )is soloable with a 60+ depends on class

keys n strategies
# Jan 22 2006 at 10:36 PM Rating: Decent
I have been successfully solo'ing TOFS with both my necromancer and my cleric for almost 2 weeks now, and I haven't had much trouble. My necromancer, even at a lower lvl than my cleric, can solo the zone much easier. I was at lvl 42 when I started and just hit lvl 50 tonight, solo'ing the first part of the 6th floor. KEI/Virt/FoS and you're set. I just sic the pet on a mob, cast Shackle of Spirit on the mob, put a dot on it (Ignite Blood or Chilling Embrance), and sit and wait. With augment death on the pet it doesn't take long to kill the shadow beasts or the icy shades. I even solo incoherent spirit and lucid spirit of abram fairly easily. My only problem is with Vhal`Sera, I can get him down to 40% then I have to feign or gate. Any strategies for solo'ing him would be much appreciated.

As for the keys, I know what alla's says about how to get them, but here's the easiest way I had for getting them.

1st: I didn't even bother with shadowbones, I went straight for the beasts. I've had the enraged gnoll spawn for me 3 times, and each time he spawned by the 5th or 6th beast kill.

2nd: Seemed to me that the angry librarian was partial to one section of the floor. When you zone in, turn right and pull students to that corner. Both times that I went for this key, I got him to pop within 20 min.

3rd: Kill the cooks in the room to the far right, and the servant in the adjacent room. By the second clearing of this small section you should have yourself an enraged mob holding a key with your name on it.

4th: I do not believe that killing Anhomenon (how do you spell it? mummy that spawns not too far from mirror) will make cara spawn. I think she's just on a timer. I have spent countless hours at tofs, and everytime I run through that room she's there. Even though for the past 5 hours not a single soul had been there but me, and I didn't kill a single thing on that floor (use cloudy potions). She's pretty easy to handle, has a lot of hp though.

5th: I've gotten this key twice, both times the relative spawned off of a golem usher. Maybe it's coincidence or maybe there's something to it. 2nd time I got the key I just cleared out the ushers a few times to get the pop. Didn't bother with the wedding participants (=

6th: Easiest key to get if you can handle Vhal`Sera. The alla info on this is dead on. Just clear the ice shades in the room with the trapped dragon statue, wait til they repop, one will look different, kill it, Vhal spawns in 2nd portion of the level. Take the mirror upstairs, and cross your fingers and take on Vhal. Haven't spent much time in lvl 7, as I have yet to successfully solo Vhal.

Hope this was helpful.

Key info
# Oct 19 2004 at 4:17 PM Rating: Good
Some info reguarding the various keys from ToFS. There are seven keys in the EQ database. They are:
1) Crystal Key
2) Three Toothed Key
3) Frosty Key
4) Small Rusty Key
5) Bone Finger Key
6) Large Metal Key (lucy)
7) Tserrina's Key
There is not an entry for the Large Metal Key in allakhazam, but there is one on Lucy. Each key is added to your keyring once used and will work on all levels up to that level. This means that if you use the Small Rusty Key to go from level 4 to level 5 you have all the previous keys added to your keyring. The keyring message indicates which level you're keyed for. So, the keyring message Tower of Frozen Shadows: 3 means you can click your way to the 4th level.
Since each key grants access to all previous levels, I'd recommend that when working your way up in a group you rotate who gets each key, that way several people can get keyed for various levels. Keys are only added to your keyring when you use it to access a level you haven't accessed before. So, if you loot Tserrina's Key, you'll want to go back to level one and use it on the left side mirror (the one that ports you to the top) to get it added to your keyring.
