The Hole is also known as Old Paineel, the first stronghold of the Heretics, and has long been taken over Elementals and their ilk.

For the longest time, the Hole was rumored to house the entrance to the Underfoot... This is, of course, no longer a rumor.

I heard this was gonan be the first zone where mages are gonna be wanted but i havent heard anything about mages on all these posts, did verant forget us again? =( ... and btw, did you guys have any very high lvl mages in your group that might know how much damage the last anti-summoned spell does? hehe

Mages are a definite plus with their procing summoned swords for pets, summoned DD's and tanking pets. There are some bad pathing issues you have to watch out for, in certain cases when moving forward into the dungeon you may have to ditch your pet and cast a new one at your next pull spot because it may not be able to follow you.

As a level 54 Magi, I have come to the conclusion from reading these boards that not many poeple must group with Magi. If they did, they would understand the power of the Magi :) There is no other class that can dish out as much damage in the same amount of time as a Magi and pet. My DD's do 95% of what a wiz spell does, except Ice Coment, and my pet triple and quads for 56-58, plus its own damage from spells, the procs from the swords, and its damage shield. Not to mention that my 51 Earth pet has nearly 3500 hps unbuffed. Then consider that if a wiz nukes a 53 unstun-charm-mezzable mob in hole, that mob will wipe him out quickly, while I :) sit back and let my earth pet tank for me as I light up the same mob. So in closing, if you have never grouped with a Magi, you should invite them into group soemtime and see how valuable they are the the team.

...drops loam encrusted bracers, great items for enchanters - can't log in yet so don't have the exact stats >:( Ycore is sooo right, we had four groups exploring. Two stayed upstairs and camped the Tower, and two went further in. A little while longer only one emerged...another story, another time...

Other mobs encountered that I can recall were a flighty fiend (looks just like an imp), an elemental wizard (pretty nasty - casts gravity flux), and ratman warriors. The ratman warriors are pretty deep down through the Tower somewhere - but they are soo fun to fight. Nasty trains, casters keep your runes up because you *will* need to not be interrupted to cast entrall/entrance/mesmerize.

Ok, this dungeon should not be attempted without two full groups of 45+, and a cleric and enchanter are mandatory. The ele's run for help when low, and bring many hard hitting friends. Also the spawn time is 20 minutes or so, meaning once you work your way in, you have to fight your way back if you need to pick someone up. The rock golem is particularly nasty, hitting for 140 with tons of Hp's. Our full group of 45+ took him out, but we were all oom, then got whacked by a wnadering crusader.
Trains are deadly in this dungeon, and many of us died right afetr getting a rez due to people trying to "explore" or solo stuff *LOL*. The loamed stuff that *rarely* drops though (we did about 40 kills and got one piece) is very sweet for casters IMHO.
Named Ratman

Down in the ratman jail, we came across a named ratman within one of the 5 cells.. Slyzek the Mighty.. loaded empty (of course).

We saw the stonemason grinder too - killed him while helping another raid do corpse retrieval. Dropped loam leggings, if I remember the name right. Another named spawn in the same area is a muck covered elemental, who is a rogue and red to me at 47 (if I remember right). Weren't able to kill the train he was in, so don't know what he drops.

Saw a Stonemason Grinder or something like that at the bottom of the ramp as you venture past the first locked door...didn't have a chance to see the drop

He's a named elemental that drops loam encrusted pantaloons. very nice caster gear. I got a pair on my last venture into the hole (absolutely bloody great dungeon crawl! great zone design except for pathing problems). We also got loam encrusted lined shoes off an elemental, also a smoldering brand. The ratmen will agro on anything they can see, but elemental or lich form will keep the elementals from agroing on you even thought they con Scowling. We managed to make it pretty deep, at the second castle under the first, though I have no idea how much farther it goes. We finally ran out of luck when we pulled two 53lvl rock golems and an elemental crusader. Couldn't mez the golems and we lost our puller and enchanter(me), the rest evaced. Better have some kind of root memed for those occasions when you get un mezzables, and better con before you even try mezzing. Enchanter and cleric are essential, mages help a great deal in this zone, and plenty of tankage. The nice thing is it gets harder slowly as you go down so you don't get blitzed before you start to find you limit.
exploration

The ratmen are the only thing that will attack a brel worshiper. I spent about 2 hours last night exploring with a lvl1 halfing rogue. Problem is even if a ratman sees you and cant catch you everything agroes. I found a room with a throne and two blue flames on each side. For some reason the Elemental Crusaders and Rock Golems agroed on me if i staid there too long. I wasn't able to get all the way in because i kept getting jumped by rats and also dont have the lockpick skill. (found a locked grate at the end of a hall under some water) *grins*

Also, sure the rock golem's have a lot of hitpts but a good group of 40 to low 50s can take one out. We got one to half but then some one said "if you think you need to evac do it" and we evac'd cause our druid misunderstood. When we evac'd the golem was at half life, our wizzie was down thanks to a lag spike, but the rest of us all had full life but for our tank. But to fight two of them without an enchanter would be a nightmere unless you had higher levels or more numbers. It's hard to find any one to go into The Hole with you.. hehe.

PS: any one on Veeshan... I apologize for the many halfling corpses of my friend and i on the way to the hole and in the hole. *smirks* HAPPY EXPLORING!
A Wanderer
# Jul 05 2000 at 5:28 AM Rating: Decent
Ya my guild went in with 2 full groups and did well... Only a couple deaths here and there till this female ghost looking chich called "a wanderer" who conned red to the 51s and blue to the 55s came out and kicked our ***... We didn't pull it... We we're sitting medding and WHAM... Ya you guessed it... The wanderer wandered by...

After hearing rumors that minions of Brell Sirilis may walk unhindered here, I went... at level 7, my reborn enchanter entered the hole with ease. The four elemental warriors right up front conned glowering, but most beyond this point conned threatening. However, carrying only a few foods and waters, i ventured forth and discovered that the KOS elementals (some also warriors, but also crusaders and channelers) simply hated me, but though better of attacking me. Perhaps they were envious of my god's approval (hehe.) I passed them with ease, and drew further in. I came upon a place where I needed a key to enter, but in going down the the ground far below, found entryways into the same building this locked door led to. I wasn't in the building long, though, as I ended up in tunnels deep below ground. Once this area opened up, I saw my first ratman and my first flighty fiend. Assuming perhaps a similiar treatment, I ventured forth and was quickly aggroed upon by both the fiend and the ratman. I died rather swiftly. Also, the rather stationary rock/stone golems strewn about the place were also Glowering. Being 7th season and all, I couldn't see what was about, but I may attempt some day to visit the establishment for a fine coating of loam (which no one can say wouldn't be useful at such a young and tender age.)

# Jun 28 2000 at 11:14 AM Rating: Decent
I've killed dozens of these guys, and I think they are acutally pretty easy for their level range 48-52, way easier than reavers, some giants, planar mobs, etc. They can crush casters with double 139s, sure, but against even a modestly armored tank they tickle them. Killed them all night with a 46th level ranger as our only tank, being supported by one 47th enchanter and one 51st level cleric.

one at a time they aren't too bad, but if you happen to pull two that are 53lvl or higher things go bad very quickly since you can't stun, mez, or charm them. They wil kill your casters and clerics because they tend to stick on them and are hard to taunt off.
loot
# Jun 27 2000 at 3:34 PM Rating: Decent
I know this is one of the only easier to break zones that is around lvl 50 and is not on kunark, but why is the loot so crappy? The weapons are all mediocre for the level they are dropped from, and loam encrusted is not very good, only for mages with so much mana they give up for a while on mana and int and improve their other stats.

ALso, can a good character get here? How do you sneak through Paineel?
Illusion:Earth Elemental
# Jun 27 2000 at 2:48 PM Rating: Decent
With benevolence I could get to dubious on most, while illusion earth elemental made me amiable. But some of them still were scowls. My religion (Innoruuk) may have been ******** with things, or some of them will always be KOS.
One more thing...
# Jun 26 2000 at 5:02 AM Rating: Decent
Forgot to mention, the necro Lich spell makes them apprehensive to the elementals. The golems still scowl though, so this works for corpse retrievals as long as you don't go too deep. BTW I don't think illusion earth elemental works either.
Stuff in the Hole
# Jun 26 2000 at 5:00 AM Rating: Decent
Elemental warrior: Probably high 30s or low 40s, hits for 95-99, looks like an earth elemental.

Elemental crusader: Probably low-mid 40s, hits for 99-105, same appearance as a warrior

Rock Golem: Looks like a muddite from the gorge of king xxorb or the clay golem from CT... Very tough, level 48-50 probably, hits for around 135.

Elemental Channeler: Dunno much about him, he basically got stunned and nuked so hard he died before I could figure anything out about him. Was a wizard mob I think, blue to a 45.

Flighty Fiend: Looks like a large imp. Did not fight one but it conned even to a 43.

Stone golem: Did not fight him either but he was black to a 53, so probably very tough.

That's all I know, we didn't get in very far because we were kinda low for the zone, most of us anyway.
Creatures
# Jun 25 2000 at 4:47 PM Rating: Decent
Ones I saw with my little lvl 1 Cleric following around a group of about 24 lvl 55+ people :)

Elemental Warrior
Elemental Crusader
A Frightly (something, forgot the name, looks like a giant fire imp)
Rock Golem
Elemental Wizard
Elemental (something, forgot name, was in the castle, and it cast an AE spell that had a "you have been struck by gusts of wind" or something to that effect)

I should've written them all down, but the hardest enemies were - by far - the rock golems, takes a VERY good group of 55+ or 2 or more groups of 50+ to take one down, hit pretty hard (most I saw was 145). Pathing seems to be fairly decent here, but watch out for the tower (ramp leads up to it once you hit the open area), everything inside agro'ed for some odd readon. Also, Enchanters, Rogues, and Necros are a MUST here, along with anything that can evac. I saw a group of 10 or so pull 2 rock golems and about 3 elementals, and thanks to the enchanters they survived, keeping everything mez'ed but one golem - fighting 2 of these is suicide unless you have the numbers. Corpse retrieval is very hard unless you're an Enchanter or Rogue (the very beginning of the zone is safe, and Necros can summon corpses there without being jumped). Also - Illusion : Elemental I BELIEVE makes you non-KOS here, so go to Cazic and pick up some potions. Also, worshippers of Brell Serilis (spelling?) are not KOS here initially (faction of MinionsOfUnderfoot goes down per kill).
