Paineel is home to Norrath's evil Erudite contingent, the Heretics. The most notable sites here are the Fell Blade (Shadow Knight guild), Abattoir (necromancer guild), Tabernacle of Terror (cleric guild), and the Athenaeum Necromantia (the local library).

Also here are two entrances to the Hole (one through an underwater passage; the other through a leap of faith), found through a network of tunnels extending out from the newbie area. The Warrens, city of kobolds, also connects to this same area.

Can Troll SK's Get Bound Here?
# Feb 06 2001 at 2:41 PM Rating: Default
I am a troll shadowknight that wants to do a little adventuring on Kerra Island and also collect bone chips from around Paineel. Does anyone know if TSK's can get bound in Paineel? I mean it IS an Evil city and we can get bound at all the other evil cities....but I don't want to try it and get killed as it a LONG walk from Grobb!

Any trolls or ogres ever been there?????

Where is the key to the Doorway in the bottom of the pond? The pond is in Newbie hunt area down some stairs at the bottom.Just dive in and swim to the deep end underwater, and you will find an entrance if you have the key.

Where is the key to enter the guild? Evidently the fire in the room center is a key receptacle but nothing I tried will work. Help!

heh heh heh.... you have just discovered an unused portal system in the world of everquest. In the very beginning verant wanted a way for players to teleport around the world really fast. so they created a portal room that allows you to zone to every city in the game. but then they change their minds. They left the portal room as is, but they locked the doors on the other side. The Portal room is in Timorous Deep at the bottom of the ocean floor guarded by a sea dragon. One last thing, i found another locked access door in the gnome city.(the access doors are disguised as a light source like a fire, torch or lamp).

The Portal room in TD is still very active and at this time 16 portal pots in it. I have a lvl 10 Iksar that swam out there, you had better be a master swimmer before trying this. I also had levitate and Sow for the most part of the trip. Oh, and make sure you know which portal your going into. Like my iksar monk is KOS most places so i did not go into any portal but the one that lead back to Cabilis. Go to eqatlas for a map of the room and what pot takes you where. This system is used for the GM's and how they can get around very quickly

Are Barb warriors KOS in Paineel?
# Dec 19 2000 at 9:10 PM Rating: Default
I was thinking of coming over to paineel with my Barb Warrior. Am I KOS there? Is the reward worth the risk? I am seeking mucho bone chips and was told this is the place to go.
RE: Are Barb warriors KOS in Paineel?

I am a barbarian warrior following the Tribunal and I am KOS in Paineel. I have been killing kobolds in the Warrens, only got about 200 so far, and I am still coning guards at "ready to atack". If you looking for bone chips, try running around the peaks in Everfrost. Spent levels 1 through 15 there and had over 60 stacks of bone chips, sold most of them to the necro's hunting the ice giants. The decaying skeletons usually carry at least one chip and most have more. If you are looking for a way to make some loot, then you may want to find an easier way then coming to Paineel, but if you are looking for some interesting sights, it's well worth the trip.

RE: Where do I find keys to get in here?

the key is located in the city of paineel at the supierior surplus store for over 100pp. Get your faction for heretics up first(kill good erudians in tox)then tell the skelly guards in the newbie zone(paineel) that you lost your key to the city, they will give you one.
A much easier way to go into the hole is to hire a rogue in qeynos to pick the lock (6th lvl or higher). there is an unconfirmed rumor that rogues who worship brell serilis (halflings, dwarves, and gnomes)will not be attacked by the earth elementals in the hole.

paineel + blacksmithing
# Sep 19 2000 at 2:41 PM Rating: Default
In paineel people will discover that trade skills are almost impossible to do here. For example the town has a kiln for pottery, but no pottery wheel. And while they do sell cooking supplies, there is no oven.
HOWEVER, it is possible to work on a few skills here. Blacksmithing is one you can work on until skill is 51. The forge is located in the fell blade (shadow knight guild) and the sharpening stones and pieces of ore are located in the building called false idol. (has a kiln in it).

Begin by sharpening weapons that you get off of decaying skel in the newbie zone. There are alot of skelly here, so getting rusty weapons is no prob. Once sharpening weapons has become trivial, begin making metal bits.( see recipies)Do not sell the metal bits. When this becomes trivial.(or backpacts are full of metal bits) begin making toolboxes until your skill hits 51.
After that, you will need to move on to greener pastures.(for levels and resources)

No, you are not KoS. Actually of all the classes coming out of Paineel you are the most warmly recieved in Qeynos. If you save a backpack full of bone chips you can quickly raise your faction in Qeynos and use the cleric guilds there.

Shopkeepers and Trade Skills
# Aug 24 2000 at 3:05 AM Rating: Decent
Although I strongly believe paineel is one of the best newbie zones in the game, and most people who've played there I think would agree, the zone does have one small disadvantage which you should be aware of. The shopkeepers in Paineel don't seem to "Retain" any items that is sold to them. This means as you get a bit of extra money to spend, you'll have to go elsewhere for anything unusual. There's no chance of picking up a piece of Raw silk someone has sold to the general store, or some spiderling silks for tailoring practice. You just have the standard items, and thats it. Why this is the case, I don't know, but you should be aware of it if you are new to paineel. It is a minor nuisance, but it wouldn't stop me playing a heretic for the world !

Bone Chips
# Aug 23 2000 at 4:52 PM Rating: Default
Paineel newbie grounds has the highest concentration of decaying skeletons in the game. A level 50 cleric couldn't kill them fast enough, so you know what this means? Saving up stacks and stacks of bone chips to sell later to bone hungry necros and shadow knights, bat wings are used for levitate so keep them too, LOTS of bats and skels, keep the stacks and be rich and laugh later.
Advanced Chip Farming

Paineel is, without a doubt, the best place to plant, sow, and reap bone chips, especially for mid level and up pet classes. Here is the plan - on the wall opposite the entrance to paineel city tunnel is the spawn point for 3 decaying skells. Now, to get them to pop (they all spawn at once), you ahve to kill the three that spawned from there (6 in the zone actually do). Kill a skell, dont bother to loot, just run over to the spawn point and check if the three popped. Once you get them to pop, whack all three with your pet as fast as you can. Again, dont loot yet. When you kill the third skell, back away from the spawn point until they pop. Now stay there. Rapidfire your autotarget key (usually F8) and your pet attack hotkey. The triple spawn will pop immediately after the third is killed.
When you have about 30 skell corpses lying around, leave the third skell alive when it is one which stops near the spawn point. Then collect the chips from the farthest corpses, keeping an eye on the third skell. When he starts to move out, smoke him. Collect all the chips that are left (should be near the spawn, so it wont pop while you are busy). Then back away and repeat. Even with the occasional fire beetle or snake getting in the way of the autotarget, You almost never need to leave your spot. I collected over 6 backpacks full in under 4 hours of real time this way. Use the chips however you desire - sell, pets, or quests.
newbie zone
# Aug 23 2000 at 8:27 AM Rating: Excellent
Franky fellow heritics we have one of the best newbie zones of all time. Forget going to Tox forrest levels 1-5 can be easy and very profitable inside out special zone. First note it to avoid falling in the hole as it will cause 10,000 pts of damage and a GM laughig at you if you ask for corpse recovery, definatly not the place to practice your drinking skill.
Inside the newbie area its self you have your standard two guards, and an NPC whom I will cover later. Since most of the people hunting here are erudite Necro's this is slanted to them. There are plenty of black bats and moss snakes near the guards that you can pull with your life tap, do so as soon as you can. Save the bat wings, and snake fangs first, since they are stackable this should not be a problem. Continue onto these two until you are out of inventory. If you were using a pet tell it to /pet sit down. The elevator ride will kill him but if he sits down he will be there when you get back, that's right kids you can sell with out zoning. Actually DO NOT sell those fangs and wings, give them to your guild master in sets of 2 fangs, 2 wings. If you try to dump al of them on here it will only count as one. What you get is positve faction with the heritics and lessend with the rest of erud. However you also get one of two scroll (locate corpse, and the lvl 1 pet) which sell for about 1 silver 1 copper. Continue doing this until your faction cons warmly. And the first thing to do when you can is buy a back pack.
By now you should be level 2 start on the skeletons with great vigor. The newbie skellies here are great. Word of warning at lower levels up to 4 they will come to the aid of their dead brothers so use comon sense and pick of the strays. For some reason the skellies in the newbie zone drop a great many cracked staves wich sell for 1pp and some change depending on faction. Keep on for your self for 1h blunt practice and sell the rest. Remember to leave your pet sitting when you go to sell.
Now for the most important part, if you take anything from this rather long rant is to save your bone chips. Not just for your self but save as many as you can. Don't fight anything but skellies, they spawn extremly quickly in the back and march forward, and over the hill and march forward in groups of three that spread you. I saved bone chips by the hundreds and here is why. There is usually some powerful necro or shadow night rampaging through the newbie zone collecting bone chips because this is the best area in all of Norath for bone chip collecting, YES the best. This is helpful for you for two reasons, first ask them politly if they will leave the rusty weapons on the skellies they kill, most do anyway, and follow like a litlle scavenger, many of these will sell for over 2gp. I have frequently been loaded down 2x my carry weight with weapons.
Now all those bone chips you saved offer to sell them, remember to always keep a full stack (20) for your own needs. Many of these high levels are wealthy and in need of a great many chips. Prices vary but it tends to be worth more the more you have to offer. A single full stack may only net you 2-4pp depending on the generosity of the buyer. If you went at it like a mad man, such as I, and offer a full back pack of 8 stacks the price is around 30pp (40 being my best including the back pack). Be honest and tell them that you are a newbie and most will be sympathetic. I have accumlated 20 full stacks in the bank and sold 10 for 60pp. This is how in one full days work I managed to be a level 5 necro with 170pp in the bank!
Note there is a down side to this strategy it get tedious and after lvl 4 you do not get exp from the skellies.
Enough of the skellies let me cover the rest of the newbie area. You have fire beatles with are good level 3-4 and remember to keep on of their eyes so you can see at night. If you are fighting a fire beetle be careful as they will come to each others aid if they happen to wonder buy The pack rats are useless in my humble opnion. The Kolbod runts should be killed every single opertunity. The drop about a silver but more importantly large bags, and small boxes saving you some purchases.
Normally nothing here is aggresive with two exceptions. Both tend to be night spawns that linger into the day. The first in Noclins pet, a level 4 skellie so check before you attack. He can be done at 3 but easy at 4. He is aggresive and hits hard for a newbie zone creature. Kill him and get some money and a rotten femur. Remember that NPC in the zone I mentioned give it to him it was his pet. You will get some positive hometown faction, some change and a magic one hand blunt weapon called Noclins Femur it is 1hp d damage 35 delay procs sicken in the latter lvls Magic Lore. Everytime you kill him return the femur for faction and change since you can only have one. Or let other newbie necros get it but hey you are evil :). The second are the undead rats whose livers ( No Drop) are needed for a cleric quest in Painell i believe (I never did the quest myself). These nasty little gits are aggresive have a weak disease DOT (damage over time) and can take a beating. If you are under lvl 4 you can take on if you put all your effort into with some luck. If you are less then full or already in cobat run to the guards, not the NPC he could care less about your problems. After lvl 4 the undead rats are mearly irratating.
Okay it was very long but I hope it helps other seekers of the dark truth on an early start to power as our good two shoe brothers are bungling around the dark forest of Tox or sitting down for a nice long boat ride to qeynos.

I've been playing an evil cleric in Paineel, so the only skels I've only been hunting are the ones that have weapons. It's about the only source of cash around. I've not really seen anyone in the zone higher than level 5, (I'm on Lanys).

The only thing I would disagree with is the "fire beetle eye for yourself". The Key to the elevator is at least the same level lightsource as a FB eye. I even bought a large lantern and find it doesn't help much.
Egg-citing news for bakers
# Aug 22 2000 at 4:00 PM Rating: Decent
The Paineel newbie zone is supposed to be the best zone in the game to hunt snakes for snake eggs. Snake eggs are a required ingredient in almost all master-baked goods such as pies, cakes, muffins, and cookies. I've read reports of people getting 4 eggs off one snake, but haven't had that kind of luck myself.

What good is baking? You have to ask?
My dear human, you have a great deal to learn about being evil.
You learn baking, because there are recipes out there for a great many of the creatures who will inevitably dare to attack you. This includes player races.
NOTHING says revenge like making a sandwich of that pesky little wood elf who ambushed you in the woods several levels ago.
They can be quite tasty when properly prepared.
