The Jaggedpine Forest made its debut on July 24, 2002.

It is home to a clan of Darkpaw gnolls, visitors from Qeynos and Surefall, as well as a host of many animals, most of which are very aggressive and sometimes difficult to see in the thicker regions of the forest.

Old Quests New Again?
# Jul 28 2002 at 5:28 PM Rating: Good
Many moons ago, I completed the Short Sword of Morin and Jaggedpine Cloak quests. These came with teasers of possible future upgrades and suggestions to not get rid of them. Has anyone followed up on these quests to see if any additional quests have been added for these. I have yet had a chance to get there, and it doesn't look like I will be going any time soon, so was just curious.

Thanx,

Be Strong, Be Silent, and Hunt Well!

Gnoll attack on Town
# Jul 28 2002 at 9:53 AM Rating: Excellent
It seems that when the named gnoll is killed a raid on the Human town by the SFG zone is triggered. If you hear that the named gnoll has been killed, you might want to zone. Shortly after he dies, LOTS of gnolls attack the town, and any pc that happen to be there. Many of them conned red to me at lvl 36. They also capture and then sit on the "zoning gem", making it a bit tough to zone out. This may not be as big of a problem for higher level players, but at 36 it was a big problem. Foolishly, I hung around to see what would happen when the gnolls attacked. I found out...............LOADING PLEASE WAIT

This happens after killing Barducks Darkpaw. If you kill the attackers and loot an item that is no-rent and class specific, you can hand it into the seargent for a reward if the townspeople survive. Last night we took out Barducks ( BIG THANKS TO SONASH AND all of LoOF/LoLF that helped ), but failed to protect the city (I got us lost trying to get out). Anywho, the head of Barducks is used in an upgrade to the Qeynos badge of Honor. Also dropped is a 19/26 1hs named Sabertooth ( congrats Oath ).
Early Impressions of JPF
# Jul 27 2002 at 7:07 PM Rating: Decent
I was in this zone for about 3 hours today with my 46 ranger and I managed to get 1.5 yellow in exp by killing nothing but timber griffawns. I had no clue prior that you could panic animal these so that was a great suprise. I found that the item loot was slim to none but I was getting 4 pp and some gold max per kill. Everything I encountered in the zone (haven't encountered gnolls yet) besides the griffons were amiable to me. I was able to kill the griffawns with little or no adds, the key is to just keep an eye out for wanderers. When I'm done with griffawns I'll probably jump right into the griffons which con dark blue to but they hit for 107 damage so I'll stick with the griffawns for now which still mostly con dark blue and have only hit me for 96 damage.
Hope this helps for people at around my level. Just remember that snakes and griffons are the only animals that don't mess with faction to my knowledge.

This is a very nice zone to play in. I have mainly been grouping inside the Darkpaw cave. In a little over 3 hours last night i made 7 blue bubs exp at lvl 52. Loot not very good though but exp is grand :) All the Darkpaws are dark blue to me at lvl 52. Same with the Dryads. I stay away from the river folks as they a tough bunch who hates company lol. When the named gnoll is killed like others have said Gnolls take over. These are also all dk blue. I made mistake 1st night of camping inside jaggedpine. Was very lucky and no war going on when i logged on. I now camp inside sfg near the orb area. Very safe place. I also use camoflauge when i zone into jp just in case lol. I had been grouped a few days ago when a grizzly was killed by group and i not get any faction hits. But when i soloed last night i did. Said my faction with Jaggedpine critters could notpossibly get any worse yet when i conned the critters i was amiable lol. Some complain about the lag in there. Yes at times my lag meter goes nits but i seldom have movement problems. I have a 800mhz with 256MB and all turned on. You might try lowering clip plane. The other entrance to zone is near the lesser succor spot and is inside the cave thats there. Hope this has helped someone but i really love the zone :)

Brell Gnolls/Oracle Quest
# Jul 27 2002 at 10:37 AM Rating: Decent
I'm trying to complete a quest given by the Oracle Something or other in the Brell Gnoll Gave not too far from the portal into Jaggedpine. Right now i'm apprehensive, and he won't tell me what the "favor" is that he'll do for me. He wants 3 necklaces made from the fangs of each of the animals (Wolves, Bears, and Black Panthers). You do not need to slaughtere the animals as i did with my beastlord for 5 hours to get the fangs... you can also just kill the poachers /sigh
Regardless, after bottoming out my faction with the animals they are still amiable to me because I was playin my bst. Poachers are good plus faction with the residents; they drop skins/pelts as well. Any idea on how i can raise this faction with the Brell Gnolls?

Now for my last question. The oracle wanted necklaces made from each of these animal's fangs and well... the animals and poachers just drop the fangs not necklaces. After I get my panther fang, I'm going to try to just hand him the 3 fangs. Any idea on how to fashion some necklaces out of the fangs?
Great Zone to Work onTradeskills
# Jul 28 2002 at 10:37 AM Rating: Decent
This seems to be a great zone to get started and to "master" tradeskills. They have a lot of "ingredients" and recipie books sold on the vendors there.

As far as pelts go, the poachers drop hq wolf, bear, cat, pelts very commonly making gathering these things a lot easier than running around smoking greens in East and West commons and so forth. Seems to me like a great zone to get started in tailoring.

There are some higher end baking recipies that will bake you right on through quit some points in the baking skill in a short amount of time.

I also see they have just about everything you need for smithing, except that I have not ran into the ore yet.

There are some new unique pottery recipies as well.

I saw nothing "brewing" related yet.
RE: Brell Gnolls/Oracle Quest Update
# Jul 28 2002 at 10:32 AM Rating: Excellent
This quest starts by talking with the Oracle Gnoll near the portal to Blackburrow. He wants fang necklaces made from 3 different animals: the wolf, the bear, and the black panther. Now to get the necklaces.

Now if you go to the cavern to the left of the oracle gnoll enclosure and go left, there is a gnoll with the word "fang" in her name, don't have exact name but should be easy enough to find. You hail her and she talks about the same "paying" respects that the oracle gnoll does. When you ask her about "paying respects" she says bring me something good to eat. I was talking with someone else who said, bring her Dryad Pate.

Recipie for Dryad Pate: Dryad Parts, Brandy, Spices, and foraged plant shoots (i've also been told they are sold from the vendors there in Jaggedspine). I successfully combined on my first try with a skill of 164 in baking, no special cooking utensil is needed, a split will do just fine.

After you make your pate, bring this back and she'll give you a Femur-like bone, this is a token of her friendship. Give it back and she'll give you a bag to bring her the fangs in. By the way, the pate is NOT no drop, but the bag that she gives you for the fangs is. So if your toon with the fangs is not the one that is doing the cooking, transfer the pate to the one with the fangs. She wants 4 of each of them, and only wants one at a time. As of now, I have not gotten any further because I have only 1 of each fang. I will let you know if you need to make a pate to get the bag for each necklace and where this quest goes from here. Thank you Nindari for your help with this quest.
RE: Brell Gnolls/Oracle Quest Update
# Jul 28 2002 at 12:53 PM Rating: Good
Correction: To get the necklaces, you need 3 fangs of each type PLUS one anaconda skin for each necklace. Putting 3 fangs of one type and one anaconda skin into the bag is what you do. The only one I have seen so far is the wolf one. Can't remember much, but it has 5 charges of SoW on it.

Update, the quest that this NPC gives is a total waste of time. I'm glad I have not pursued this further. It results in a rather kewl looking NO DROP 1hb 12/32 +35mana, +10sv Disease/Poison shamy/necro only weapon according to another allakazams user.

Zone, Bags, and Patch
# Jul 26 2002 at 8:05 AM Rating: Decent
Though most probably know by now, just in case:

TO GET TO THIS ZONE from Surefall Glade, you have to have downloaded the "OPTIONAL PATCH", which is accessed from the ADVANCED button on your download window.

The zone is NOT an automatic download with standard patch... without it the portal looks like 2 bags, with it, it is a colomun with a gem on top that you click.

Oh, and its through the Bear Caves in Surefall...and evidently levels 35+ .... good luck!

i went into sfg tons of ppl clicking in between these two bags they said i had to click this stone but all i saw was a de with a stone on her weapon i was thinking then no one was clicking her so now im jsut gonna go to to the gm and ask is this luclin or something ?
RE: bags
# Jul 26 2002 at 12:32 AM Rating: Excellent
From my understanding if you see the bags and not the red crystal you have not downloaded the zone. What you need to do is exit out to your desktop and then restart the game. Stop the patch download and click on advance. Put a check mark into download optional zones and then restart the download. I have not found this to not work in fixing this issue.

If you want to not get a negative faction hit with the jaggedpine folk, just don't kill them, the wolves, or bears. As a druid I wouldn't even touch a treant so I don't know their faction hits, but all other mobs are fair game. Dryads are their own faction, Anchorites are their own faction, poacher etc... The inter connecting faction hits I've noted are poachers + to residents, gnolls + residents - darkpaws, bears/wolves - residents. I posted some noted faction stuff further down in the strategy disscussion section if you would like more info on mobs or locations.

As for the zone shape.. typical VI square shape with mountians all around the zone boarder, a river along on border with mountians across from it. There are a few hills you can run over which attach to the zoneline, and some gullies which direct you towards various points of intrest. (they don't lead straight there, just run for a bit and stop. If you continue to follow that general direction you will end at a camping area or city) Zone size approx 3k x 3k

How big is this zone and what CAN druids kill here?
# Jul 25 2002 at 4:35 PM Rating: Default
The posts here so far have been pretty helpful, but none mention the size of the zone. Is there a size or shape of any more familiar zones that Jagged Pine might compare with? Also, like 80% of eq players I've got a woodelf druid and I'm paranoid about killing the wrong things and ******** my trehugger faction. I figure it's always safe to beat on gnolls (who wants their affections anyway?), but what should I especially avoid or kill to stay in good druid graces?

Bags not Gems
# Jul 25 2002 at 4:33 PM Rating: Good
Any reason why I and several other players do not see the gem needed to zone into Jagged Pine? In SFG, we see two bags (one 6' above the other) neither of which triggers anything when clicking on them. Other players seem to have no problem...any help would be great.
Thanks

If you see an adventurer looking dazed and confused in front of the portal be sure to let them in on this. I medded there for about 5 minutes and talked to no less than six that were still seeing the "bags". None of them knew how to get the "optional" patch started. *wink*

You need to download the optional patch , the bags will then turn into gems. The BB entrence is down where the gnoll brewer hangs out , Found that last night

I know this doesn't match the JP thread much, but I was wondering if a manastone was worth it much anymore. You can't use it in all the new zones, and some of the old zones are getting revamped. I was just curios to those that have one, when do you really get a chance to use it?

one more thing.. LOTS of green near SFG to 53, so I'd say mid 30's can start here easy, Mostly light blues to a lvl 60, and many blues to 53.

I'd put lvl range from 35-55ish. Lvl 60's would dominate with only a handfull of dark blues. But aggro is nutz on some things, so be weary.

Does anyone know what level the forest is? I had heard on Caster's that it was low to mid level. I thought maybe 10 to 30 or something. But, now I'm hearing it's like 35 to 60...yikes.
Anyone know for sure?

RE: level of MoBs?

It was supposed to be a mid level zone, Which we mistakenly believe to be 30 (sing as 60 is highest). I guess 40-45 is considered mid-level.

I think a non-druid/ranger could kill off the local animals around 35 or so.

*sigh* Oh well. Guess it's just another zone I have to wait for. I wish I could at least sell there but I can't fix faction until I'm way higher, so selling will suck. At least I can hit the bank if I don't need to sell.

Thanks.
faction hit
# Jul 25 2002 at 8:58 AM Rating: Excellent
A very strange occurance in this zone: within the first 30 minutes in this zone last nite I received 7 yes thats right 7 faction hits for critters of jaggedpine, and people of jaggedpine (or something like that) ... what makes this strange is that I did not kill anything at all in zone, I was not standing next to anyone who killed anything in zone, I did not aid anyone who killed anything in zone, and I only even attacked 1 single mob (timber griffawn) for 1 round of hits to see how hard he hit me, I then FD'd and continued my expoloration. I was standing in "town" half of the time right by the SFG teleporter globe and the other half of the time right next to the banker when all the faction hits came through. I had nothing targeted. I spoke with 2 GM's about it and it appears that there is something with this zone that makes an existing problem (sometimes if a mob aggro's you.. even if you dont attack it, it will retain you on its hate list for LONG periods of time and later on even if you are nowhere near and someone else kills mob... u get faction hit.).... I have never received ANY types of faction hits like this in any other zone so just be careful, in this zone you can wreck your faction just by GETTING attacked... no action on your part is required other than being within the aggro range of mobs.
RE: faction hit
# Jul 26 2002 at 4:48 PM Rating: Excellent
Hmmm If this is true you could raise faction with human city by having Darkpaws aggro on you and running away. When Darkpaws die you would get positive faction with the humans. Has anyone else noticed this phenomenon?
