Home to the Sirens of Velious, much of the Grotto is underwater. In addition to the Sirens, whose palatial quarters can be found deep within the caves, there are many types of aquatic life here. Seahorses, swordfish, mermaids, and elementals can be found throughout the area and are highly aggressive. Above water are the passive walruses and a clan of unwelcoming Bulthars.

They start to green out at about 52. I don't know about grouping, but this was some of the best experience that I have seen in the game solo.

There are at least a few NPC's there not listed. Two I saw were Mistress something and Priestess something, the Mistress was 63+, the Priestess was 59 or 60. The Mistress spawned I believe in the area in the middle of a lake with 3 bridges leading to it (see Sparr's map listed here). She's a rare spawn there, one group was there 6 hours one night and then she showed, they had to evac. Went back there with under 4 full groups and dropped her. Drops were disappointing for a mob that high (netted Kelp, gem or two, no spells). Armor quest gems were dropping quite regularly.

Well... on the planes of fear you get owned by apes and spiders too, so it's not really a big difference to get owned by sea horses and walruses

Though I have never been here, and probably never will, I still think this is the funniest zone in norrath, when you get high lvls you would expect to fight dragons, undead ect. instead your fighting fish and walruses and blue women, even though these happen to be 50's uber mutan sea life. i wonder if on lucin there going to put in a zone where you fight 50s house cats and poddles(this is joke not a spolier).

Figured I'd post halfway decent guide to this zone since all I see here is a bunch of.(well i don't know what to call these posts but they don't seem very informative or productive in the least). Anyways here's the intel i've gathered from personal experience. First off how to get to the zone entrance. From the portal or Skyshine go down to the beach to the Othmar settlement and follow the beach to the right till you hit the zone wall, keeping the zone wall on your right hand side follow it along (either levitate or swim/invis since there are a few sharks along the way sometimes and 2-3 sirens gaurding the zone entrance) The entrance is underwater about halfway down on the zone wall. Sirens are enchanter type mobs, they can charm & nuke you all that fun stuff enchaters do =) They come in 2 variety Siren Seductress and Siren Enticer (enticers being slighty lower level then suductress and a bit weaker) they do not see invis however they have a decent amount of magic resistance making it hard to land spells on them. Upon zoning in there you will notice walrus type mobs these con indifferent and will not attack if left alone but they will attack if you make any act of aggression on anything in their aggro radius. There are also bultark(half man-half walrus beasts) these walk on 2 legs and are aggressive, being high to completely magic resistant. Note: If bultharks are attacked any nearby normally indifferent walruses within aggro range will add.
The other types of mobs here are seahorses and fish. If targeted while you are standing on land they con indifferent.. this is a false con. They will con scowls ready to attack the moment you enter the water and will attack once you enter their aggro radius. When you hit dry land again they will return to indifferent.

ALL Seahorses and Fish see invis and are the only mobs that do.

Nothing else (Bultharks, sirens, walrus, etc..)in the zone will see invis.

If just passing thru I would recommend getting a wizard or druid to succor you to the other side for easy accesss to the Western Wastes zone since there is no way to get thru without swimming by or killing the seahorses that gaurd the tunnels.

What makes this zone difficult is due to the high magic resistance and mob density it is very easy to get runners and adds since it is hard to land a snare or root. But is good hunting and xp if you have a solid group.

If you are intent to see the actual Siren's Grotto this zone is named for...

The Sirens inside this zone are basically the same as the ones gaurding the CS/SG entrance but are higher level. They are best reached by running invis from near the WW zone out to the "Well" (a dark gray/green brick circular stucture gaurded by a few Bultharks) swimming down the tunnel of the well thru a transparent tube then straight up and out the bottom to reach the Siren's chamber. I would only suggest this for a very solid group of 58+.The icy servants in this area (AoE cold damage in the range of 200-500) are rough for even the most seasoned adventurers and recommend for average players who dare to brave this area to bring multiple (at least 2) groups.

I'm going to second Nibors post. Here, most of the information seems to be spot on with a few recent changes.

1) Mob aggro has been lowered. Things don't chain aggro so much anymore, but there is still a problem with aggroing the sirens off the ledges when pulling from the "tube" up to the top of the well.

2) Mob fleeing isn't so bad now either, they don't run away with super-sow like speeds anymore.

3) Only thing I ever fought that gated recently was a cleric type mob, I think it was a Bulthark, not positive. If you see something start casting cleric nukes on you, assume it will gate. The sirens for some reason do not seem to like to gate anymore.... which is good.

4) Cash loot has been upgraded, these guys drop more sellables and rare gems now than they did before.

5) HP's seem to have been lowered on mobs throughout the zone. They still have outrageous amounts of HP compared to mobs in seb and hs - which is why those two places are so overcrowded.

6) Damage on some of the "critters" (not sirens, or the elementals) seem to have been reduced down a notch or two.

Also there is a second way to get to the sirens via the well. In the river outside the brick house is a tunnel that leads underneath and down the tube. (This is how you would normally get out if you fell down the well w/out evac). Really surprised a group breaking down to the castle by taking this route and getting there ahead of them :)

Everyone is kos here and if you are planing to go to western wastes i would be taking a druid who has level 57 minimum (with succor) or you are going to have a hell of a time trying to get past this zone, not that i have tried to get past this zone without succor but there are some pretty nasty things in here and a wrong turn would be death and one long CR :) I only really killed seahorses when we went here but even then still had a couple of deaths from adds and things. Ohhh and whatever you do people NO PETS IN THIS ZONE.

you know i normaly dont post on this bored cuase you guys are so nasty to each other but i feel like i must tell you guys about a nasty sickness that is spreading through the players of everquest , its called Norathian Wuss Sickness . now this is where a person uncontrolably losses all lust got adventure and becomes afraid of thier own shadow. you can see this horrid sickness illistrated when 6 low to mid 50s get togher and go kill low blues that half of them can solo and the other 2 can take with only 2 people exaples of this are a level 30 who yells for a group in the eastern wastes and is promply told to go back to iceclad they are 7 levels too young , but in reality more than a tird of the mobs there are blue and well with in solo range for a Shadowknight (dont give me crap i know i did it from level 27 to 33 and i did it in a little over 4 days and yes i was solo the whole time) another example of this i brought my 47 enchanter to sebilis yelled for a group and bam im the laughing stock of the zone , go home little gnomie this is a 53 plus zone !! and yes i was able to not only hun there mez any frog in the upper and middle levels but i was able to do the crypt and the mushroom king at 47 =) (yes i can mez reavers) infact when i yelled a statement similr to this one across the zone a guy told me i was an exception to the rulez and he would pruve it , he bet me taht a group of 47s or lower could not camp bugz or even the zone out to sebilis , if i lost i had to leave and not come back till i was 53 and if i won then i got a spiffy new tolapumj's robe, well my group camped both the iksar jail the bugz and the zone out for 2 hours each cept zone out and we won a Css a lammy to go with my sweet robe. so i suppose what im saying is im sure a Sk and a druid could do what they said and take singles in this zone. mebey instead of whining and complaining on this page you guys should grow some balls and go learn how to play your class right you may be surprised at what you can accomplish (yeah yeah i know i cant spell and my grammer sux)

It only makes sense to go after easy blue cons.
Since you are higher level you will hit them for more, be hit by them for less, get less resists, and generally be more efficient. Sure you could always go in SG and kill some really tough stuff that resists consistently and takes EVERYTHING you've got to kill, but then you're gonna sit on your butt for 10minutes while everyone gets ready for the next fight (and exp doesn't scale up according to the time it takes you to med). Even if the exp WAS a bit better killing this tough stuff it's going to be boring medding back up in between fights and most people play this game to have fun.
RE: eq wuss disorder

First of all thats totally stupid. There is no way a lvl 47 enchanter could mez 54+ creatures. You need the lvl 56 spell Glamor of Kintawtf to mez them. You might have mezzed ONE low level one (yes, reavers do come below 54) but that HARDLY qualifies you as good enough to actually do shrooms or the king camp. The only camp that you could possibly ever think of doing being that low is necro or gang, which as you mentioned is the only camps you have done successfully. So please, there are VALID reasons why people don't let you in their groups. Because they wan't a strong group that can actually get them experience, not one struggling to control 2-3 frogs.
RE: eq wuss disorder
# May 08 2001 at 6:14 PM Rating: Decent
I happen to agree. 90% of all camps in EQ are people that are so high that the camp loses all challenge except for the tactically impaired. Any group composed of anyone who could conceivable die there from anything besides rampant stupidity is considered too low for the camp. As an enchanter I got laughed at in several dungeons the first time I hunted there... until they saw the results. I was doing Paw at level 23, Lord in Guk at level 39, and other similar camps all at a level that was initially laughed at. I was accepted into higher level groups out of sheer desperation for an enchanter in the middle of the night, and then proceeded to amaze everyone when we'd go hours without a death. I can only wonder how many other camps I missed out on becasue groups weren't desperate enough to take someone "way too low". I've done camps that nobody would believe unless they were there just because the skill level of the group (and creativity) was sufficient to compensate for many levels of raw power.

Despite our initial poster sounding like a half-wit (sorry, but you did), his story is very believable to me because I've been there. I know people make up some outlandish stories, but some of those stories in all likelihood are true, especially when told by certain classes. You'd be AMAZED what an enchanter (for instance) can do with the right mix of a pair of steel balls, proper planning, a fair bit of luck, and a good grasp of the right spell usage.

On the topic of Wuss Disorder, I couldn't agree more! I can't believe the boredom some people will endure for safe leveling at minimal risk (quad kiting is a prime example). I have good friends that are guilty of it to the point that I almost never play with them (for many levels they did nothing but quad kiting and equally boring but FAST leveling techniques, and still do on occasion, but now are old enough to hunt "fun" places). For all the non-druid, non-wizards out there the closest they can get is hunting blues mindlessly to extinction. I just can't hunt that way, I need adventure. I crave risk. I gain nourishment from excitement. Quad kiting is about as fun as 10 hours of solitaire to me, or maybe counting the pixels on my monitor. Okay, /rant off

Hmmm, seems to me that he posted a legitimate point. It takes into account every class but one: the warrior. Face it, the higher in levels we go, the worse we get shafted. Can't solo anything on a consistent basis for XP past about level 25 (there will be those that dispute this), can't nuke, snare, heal or port... of course, we're not meant to do these things. We're meant to fight, plain and simple. However, when a ShadowKnight, onw on one, can potentially out-damage a Warrior, using equvalent armor and weapons, there's a problem.

Now, as for the person that posted above me, seems to me that you're the one throwing the tantrum...
#Anonymous, Posted: Apr 26 2001 at 12:22 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Dude you are so ******* right, what the hell is the point if your never gonna try to kill more powerfull stuff its part of the fun in the game. Eq lets you group with people much higher for that reason. I hate it when I go to a zone and people start laughing cause they say your too low. When you go there, and someone laughs, then a week or two later you see that person again and are almost the same lvl just start laughing at them. I know this isn't true for higher lvls but grouping when your too young to solo the ******* thing is the point, thats why you need a group. I respect you sooo much for saying what you said and I think some people are just stupid for not letting you be in there group. You wanna laugh, go laugh to a 60 of any class with all there plane armor and epics, see what the hell they think, how do you think people lvl so fast before power lvling can be done? Anyone that laughs is a jackass!

He may not be lying I was in a group at Kanor's at lvl 35-36. I have to say I agree with this statement 100% I get tired of camping ry'gorr because I can't get a group to Cobalt Scar or Velkethor. I spent 44-45 and my group was hunting kobolds instead of beetles cause they were afraid. Half the fun in EQ is exploring and those PHEW! I didn't think I make it camps! GL all

Heh. This is not the place to be posting about wuss disorder though. Siren's Grotto is /HARD/. It only takes a mistake or two for 3 groups of 54-60 players to suffer a wipeout, even the most powerful single group has to step carefully if they want to travel any significant distance into the zone. Most parts that I've seen in SG are roughly comparable to a single group in Juggs in Seb. A good strong group and it's perfectly possible and quite possibly profitable, but there's little room for errors.

regarding mob levels, perhaps they arent the same level every time they spawn. i.e. the entry mobs last night were all level 53.
Not every mob in here is of summon level, and there are some spots clear enough to pull solo.
Regarding the rather infintile slandering of the duid/sk poster, if he's lying then oh well. But for you sheep out there that feel you HAVE to have a certain class makeup in your groups, verant thanks you for being predictable ^_^
