I am a level 65 ranger with 691 AA's and right now using DOT's along with Snare I can kill most DB mobs with my bow, and a few blasts from cold an fire spells, I for one am maxing out AA's for my level as I go up levels, so I will not be getting level 66 nor 67 for awhile as when I do these spells are pleasant surprises for me. AN donly add to the mass damage I already inflict, I am soloing areas like Black Feather Roost, COD, and have around 18K HP buffed. And thoug I do not PVP much I pretty much cant be killed with my merc from any PVP in my range, on ZEK. I tend to run them OOM and make them waste HT, if they are an SK. Then they run away instead of dying for me, since they started it, they should at least let me kill them.
argument over using dots...

After playing a ranger for 5+ years... I have come to realize that the stongpoint of a ranger is not being the best at using any one technique, but rather the art of mastering them all of to achchieve the best results. A ranger is not a warrior or a caster or a healer or dps or buff bot but all of these things combined. Ranger pull= Snare autofire dot dot dot debuff nuke repeat from dot. And with the adition of this spell ill add a total of 4 dots.
Not including flamelick, which i have never taken out om my offensive spell lineup. But if your rather just use a bow maybe consider a warrior.

I use DoTs all the time I currently have 320AAs at level 66. I use my steamwork bow in groups and throw 3 dots and a 2 nukes and still have time to keep my rate of fire going avg bow shot runs 400 to 600 with 900+ crits. When true shot is going I hit for 1200+ crits. Extra dots help and if you got time I would use them every little bit helps to bring the mob down.

if our dots had a 1 sec cast time, or less, i might consider using them
its ok

Aye not a bad little DoT, if you find yourself messing around in pov or something then the DoT is pretty good, not something that would be on my regular spell line up but at least they finally gave a DoT that did over 100 damage a tick :P

Decrease Hitpoints by 173 (L67) to 179 (L70) per tick last for 60 secs a tick is 6 secs that makes this cause dmg 10 times = 1730 to 1790 dmg done over the course of its spell life.
this is a nice dot.. for a 1.5 sec cast.

Not bad

If your gear doesnt suck and you have enough aa you'd know that your bow dps SUCKS even high end unless you use ts so with taht said when a mob is inc or your on your way to it, this dot takes me 1.5 seconds to cast... may as well add that dps imo. If you have to WS a mob this holds great agro as well...

Cast time is 1.6 when I mem this at 67. No special effects on my gear.
I wish it had been our last 67 spell, I'd have likely just skipped it.

DPS vs Bow

So a Ranger does over 435 damage per shot at that level (without Trueshot disc)? I wouldn't know, as I just hit 30 with my main. It seems that is what it would take to equal the damage on this spell.

I pretty much plucked the number out of thin air to be honest with you. While I stand around hitting my archery key I do often look at the numbers to try to estimate what the average shots are hitting for. The trouble is that the tougher the mob, the more stats and skills and ac, and the less your arrows hit, and the less the damage. In other words you regularly score fantastic hits against wasps and orcs, but are likely to miss a large chunk of the time in your favourite exping ground.

Currently i'm a 66 with moderate AAs, a stonewood, and pre-elemental but above average gear. If i had to pick an average figure per hit against giants in BoT, i'd say it was somewhere between 350-450.

The main trouble with judging this accurately though is the distance between the extremes - 1150 is the best crit i can land, and 0 is obviously the lowest (0 also occurs far more than 1150 i might add!).

So let's be conservative and say we hit for just 300 a go, and manage just 1 shot per second. That's still 900 damage done (on average) over the course of time we could be casting this spell - more than the 870 damage from the dot.

I am ignoring this innate spell haste thing i mentioned below, but then i'm also ignoring the fact this spell can fizzle or fail to land. On top of that, there's another spell slot taken, and another 425 mana lost.

This doesn't mean that this spell will never be useful. We rangers often find ourselves in situations where we need to melee, or our bow is on our corpse, or fighting a mob immune to regular melee/archery dps.

But as a ranger, there are few spells from 65-70 that i'd really want to work on getting. Those acceptions are the heal, group attack, new self ward, and perhaps the final dd. Most of which i'll just be finding useful during soloing.

Sony have realised that rangers are closer to their bows than their spell books so didnt' put too much effort in the new spells. But that really then leaves me asking, why no new spells for archery?

Stonewood bow at 100% hasted (so not counting overhaste) you're firing once every 1.85 seconds. This spell casts in 1.5 seconds. You lose no DPS from this spell, or a very, very negligible amount. To max DPS loss, you would have to cast it .1 seconds before your bow shot again. Then, when you go back to shooting, ever 6 seconds you do 179 points damage, more than making up for your percieved loss of DPS.

more of the same, but in dot form
# Sep 20 2004 at 12:11 PM Rating: Decent
hmm... 145/tick. close to winged death == level 54ish druid spell but at level 67.

As dafdaf saysm it's practically worthless in dmg/cast. Further on the level mobs we'd do at level 67, this is hardly effective use.

I'm glad rangers finally got a DoT, and with a resist adjust to boot... meaning it won't subtract from our DPS as badly as our nukes. But until SOE gets off their duffs and reduce the cast time for all of our damage spells, they're just not worth casting in normal combat situations.

I've noticed for a while that my spells all seem to have a reduced spell cast time. I removed all my clothes piece my piece (somewhere secluded i promise) to see whether I forgot about some item I looted. And there I was naked witht he same reduced cast times. I looked both ways and decided not to say anything in case it was a bug...but about a week or two ago I saw a post somewhere here in allakhazam talking about a ranger's 'innate spell haste'.

When did that happen? And why don't they just reduce the labelled casting time if it's true?

That's an awful dot in my opinion. It does 870 damage and takes 3 seconds to cast....or we could hit archery a couple of times and out damage it.

If this adds a lot of agro then it can be useful for tanking, though at 425 mana it's an expensive method.
