OLd spell research

I know it is not used anymore. But what was the old way of doing spell research? Did a person see someone to get a container to put it in to research or what?

Wow, I came about four years late to this game (LDON era), and here I get to explain how it was in Ye Olde Days? Woot!

Used to be, there were no subcombines and no purchased ingredients (except the kit to combine stuff in). The stuff you combined to make the spell was all dropped. These were things like Words of Comprehension and Rune of Conglomeration and Part of Toharon's Memoir Pg. 21 (which had to be the left half, not the right half, if you wanted to make Divine Intervention, say). They would drop all over the place, but there were too many different words/runes/pages to have all of them be global drops, so some drops tended to come only from certain areas. As areas became less used, certain words became quite rare, commanding thousands of plat in the bazaar because popular spells (like Divine Intervention and KEI) could be made from them. And researchers had to devote an entire bank for the ingredients.

In the new research system, the only dropped part is the vellum or paper or what-have-you that determines the level of the spell. So those are worldwide drops, from any magic-using creature of about the right level (or something like that). Some of the old Words etc. still drop, usually because they have other uses outside of research. And since many of the old items were also used as vendor trash, that role has been filled by items like Complex Velium Embossed Rune.

Last warrior pet till level 59

What sucks at this level is that both Lich and Invoke Death are not sold off NPC vendors... despite their key roles they play for necro.

Invoke Death is a massive boost on Crackling Bones, with 1k more HP at 2300. Also it's the last warrior pet you get with 2k+ HP, until Emissary of Thule at level 59. All other pets in between are rogue and monk pets and, despite their usefulness in groups (as damage dealers), they have much less HP (1300 and 1700 respectively). You will use them, but also there will be many circumstances where you'd rather have a pet with more HP. So get this pet, adore it and make love to it because you 2 are going to have a long love & hate relationship. IMO there should have been another warrior pet upgrade in mid 50s, but ... oh well.

Words no longer make this spell.

Here is the new way to make this spell:
INVOKE DEATH
Spell Research Components: Bone Chips, Conjuring Thickener, Ink Additive of the Nameless, Ink of the Companion, Quill of the Arch Lich, Smooth Fine Supple Runic Hide
In: Spell Research Kit
Yield: 1
This combine may only be made by Enchanters, Magicians, Necromancers, or Wizards

Fungus Grove Oddity

It's funny, I can pull with this pet in the Fungus Grove without drawing aggro, but I tried pulling today with a 'Minion of Shadow', the next pet in our line, and I drew aggro. Very odd.

Ebelch,

the rule of thumb for successful pet pulling is to use a pet that's *green* to mobs. your next level pet conned higher and thus, got aggro.

i know, it's weird but i don't make the rules. =)

I just wanted to point out that a previous patch (not sure when) made this and the Bard's Fade/Bellow pulling trick obsolete. So anyone reading the above posts, don't attempt to pull with a lower pet. It doesn't work.

I remember when I first got this pet, it's a great pet and I can't wait until I can use it on my SK. The stats on this pet are as follows:

HP: 2,300
Hits: 55 damage
Bash: 25 damage
Kick: 25 damage

Skills are: Bash, Kick, Double attack, Dual wield, and Lifetap.

I hope this was some help to those of you unable to find any stats on this pet.

The Maiden's Eye

The words for this spell and for all the lvl 49 spells drop fairly commonly off the Vampyre Bats and Reanimated Drudges in the Maiden's Eye. The bats, drudges, and coterie along the eastern zone edge are all undead, and shackle of spirit is a huge help. A group of lvl 49+ can camp drudges and bats with the necro using Shackle of Spirit and the various vs. undead spells to great advantage. Coterie, by the way, are immune to our undead Charm spells and our undead pacifiers like Rest the Dead.

Here's a tip that's not much use to you if you're looking for this spell at level 49, but at 54, you can actually solo out here by buffing your CHA and using Thrall of Bones to charm a drudge - an Augmented Death Drudge can successfully take on 2 or 3 other mobs at once, especially if you can toss shackle of spirit on one or two of them.

And if charm breaks - run. Run like hell.

Maiden's Eye drops the words Odus and Grappling from Umbrous Toiler - nasty place, though. So. go with a group if your level 49.

This spell is not sold by any NPC merchants. It is obtained via spell research only (Words of Acquisition (beza) + Words of Requisition).
This pet Rocks
# May 17 2003 at 5:06 PM Rating: Decent
This pet is so much better than the lvl 44 pet its almost unreal. When you buff this pet with Augment Death its like duo with a warrior class and its extreamly nice. I took him to Rathe to see just how much better he was at killing Hill Giants than my lvl 44 pet and the difference was amazing. No giants were up so I figured I would test his skills going toe to toe with a Cyclopse and no help from me and he kill the mob and only lost 2% of his hp. I think the life tap that he procs is a 20hp tap because he dropped lower than 2% but since he was hardly getting hit he healed himself back up to 2% before the mob dropped. He can also kill a HG if I hit the giant with Insidious Retrogression since that lowers the Giants STR and AC by 20 each. This pet is a must have before you can afford any of the Uber pets and it will help you farm that plat much faster.

Proc

Pet also seems to proc some Lifetap-type spell. Always seeing skulls around him (like Fear) and seeing the message "Jontik staggers."
