For shamans it stacks with previous poison based DoT.

When a necromancers tastes the experience of soloing its very hard to go back to random pickups.. and aggro kiting is the best way, that ive experienced, to solo. this spell is key. everytime i tried a different spell in its place i would lose aggro onto my pet, which is no good.
the aggro of this spell is one of the reasons i like it so much.

nerfed?

as of 5-11-05 it now lasts for :36 seconds, which is 6 ticks. compared to pre-511, it Used to last :42 seconds, 7 ticks.

however, the mana cost went down to 202, as compared to 320, so you lose 146 dmg, but you Save 118 mana on the cost.

Dealing with agro
# Oct 08 2003 at 4:19 PM Rating: Decent
Agro from this is no big deal. If you have a good BA3 or 4 item, you just cast this, and immediately FD. Then stand up, wait a second and sit. Just like magic: no (for some values of "no") agro.

It seems that this works, even if FD doesn't wipe agro (though not if it fails, of course). I think that the change that they made for invulnerability applies here. You get pushed WAY down the hate list when you become "invulnerable" due to FD, so even if you stand up and then sit, you only have a fairly reasonable amount of hate.

It's the DD+DoT agro that kills you on this. Once you've FDed the DoT agro isn't *too* bad.

sure thats great for a necro, but shamans don't get FD...
Wow! - Great Spell

I was grouped in PON last nite w/ my Necro. I dinged 51 and memmed this one right away. Wow! Does some incredible damage. I had a magician in the group who summoned a rallican's bracelet w/ Burning Affliction IV (add 20%) and this spell was doing 175 per tick! With burning affliction and affliction efficiency (trinket of suffering) I was getting 1335 damage for 240 mana in 42 seconds. Very Nice.

Only 2 problems:

First - the mob will HATE YOU. Don't cast it early on or you won't be able to shake the aggro.

What I would do was wait till the mob was at 70% or less hp before casting. This spell does so much damage so fast its worth casting even if the mob dies 4 ticks later. The other thing I did a few times was back off to max casting range as the puller was coming back to camp and I would hit the mob with dooming darkness. If that stuck I would immediately cast EB. Even though the mob would aggro, the snare gave me enough time to Feign Death before it got into melee range.

Second - On yellows and low reds I got a decent amount of resists.

If I keep getting resist problems I think I'll invest in that Nightshade Scented Staff that has the resist debuff right click effect.

A very high aggro dot
# Jan 15 2003 at 9:57 PM Rating: Decent
EB is a great spell when you have mana to spare and need fast damage. The downside (other than the high mana) is that it will almost certainly get a mob's attention if you cast it, because of both the direct damage component (110 dmg) and the high damage per tick (146 dmg). Most useful when soloing or when grouped with a tank that can really hold aggro well.

One other note is that the direct damage component will usually break root, so its application when rooting and dotting in confined spaces is limited.

Overall a very good spell given the right application.
