Grim Aura

From what i understand this spell is self only and increases attack rating. Now i can understand how this would be usefull to a shadowknight but how is it usefull to a necro? Necros dont melee. Now if you could cast it on your pet it might be pretty good. But oh well.

Oh but I beg to differ! I play a 63 necro and yes I DO MELEE! When I was in my tens and teens, I would melee mobs with my pet. This is how I would do it:

Send pet. Dot the heck out of mob. Then attack mob to get aggro. While I am meleeing mob, I have the pet sit and heal a bit (and try to cast a heal on pet while mob is on me). Feign death, then send pet again. Get up, and heal myself. Repeat and rinse.

Now for higher lvl mobs, well there are instances where melee has saved my dark evil butt! OOM, but mob is trying to escape, pierce or bash it to death.

Also, when I need bone chips, I run around Paineel newbie zone clobering skels.

So you see, necros DO melee. We do alot of things that people don't know about. Lets see we do the following:

We Heal (group and single targets)
We Rez (Better rez PCT that Pallys! we rez fot 93 PCT)
We Life Tap for ourselves or for group
We Mana Tap for ourselves or for group
We can pull like Monks, IMHO better cause we can Dark mob. So if I am pulling from a group, I cast Dark, 3 mobs come after me. I FD, undarked mobs walk back to spawn spot while the 3rd Darked mob is rooted in position until dark wears off. So once the other 2 drop me from aggro list, I get up and pull the Darked mob over to kill area.

Hands down, if soloing is your thing, Necros are the best in the game.

RE: Grim Aura sorry tiny, but you're misplaying the class. yes at lower levels, step in, take some abuse, save your pet and components. but you weren't meleeing....you were practicing your pierce, maybe hitting for 4dam every 10 swings. and killing decay skels isn't melee either. at higher levels, if you stand in to save your pet (and, btw, you shouldn't have to do that if you know what you are doing and how to play the class), you'll get raped in seconds. <you> try to pierce %t but miss...

RETURNING TO HOME POINT...PLEASE WAIT....
....this is not meleeing.... if you have to melee, your misunderstanding the class and misplaying it. but, hey, it's your 12.99 per, that's all verant/sony requires....not intelligence. sorry

This post by Tvarn was made back in 2003 .. so as we all know, LOTS has changed. BUT to avoid some confusion I have to say that Meleeing as a Necromancer is vital in todays (2012) game up to a point. With the addition of Merc's, stupidly overpowered pet weapons from mages, and low level Defiant daggers/staves that do extremly nice damage (at level 37 I am weilding a 9/19 dagger with 249 Dex from full defiant gear) you as a necromancer can add a pretty significant amount of damage by meleeing with your pet and merc.

This is how my pulls go at level 37(usually I stick to Yellow, and Red cons):

Cast:
Grim Aura: +10 atk
Vampiric Embrace: 30 dmg lifetap proc (goes off around 3-8 times per fight with a high dex, thats about 90-240 damage and healing)
Banshee Aura: 8-12 dmg Damage Shield
Allure of Death: +4 mana, -6 health self buff
Pull mob with low damage disease DoT
Send in pet and merc
Drop the rest of my DoTs on my mob
Run in and melee
Finish the mob off with Spirit Tap (life tap for ~210 dmg)

Now I usually end up tanking quite a bit, but can end a fight with a red con with ~85% life and ~70% mana. I will alternate the Leech DoT in when needed but it's kind of a mana hog. I would say my melee damage + lifetap procs do around 20-30% of the mobs health at level 37 ... I am sure this strat will change as I get to higher levels, but for now, it makes soloing quite a lot faster.

Another thing to note is that because I am the one taking the damage, and the best way to heal myself is by harming the mobs, it is MUCH more productive to cast a few more Lifetaps, and/or the Leech DoT, than waste mana on pet heals, or our dreadfully non-efficient Dark Empathy line of spells.

It's come to my attention you don't get daring with your necro, if you have one. Sometimes on lower named mobs that summon, when I solo, I am forced to melee. I become a gimp SK and yes I do actually hit the mob fairly well considering my class. While chain lifetapping, melee, pet, and DoTs, melee can be fun as a necro. It's not like you can't FD.
Precise or Aura

Does this effect get overwritten by a Rangers L39 Natures Precision self buff ?
I spent a couple hours camping Grachnist for this earing (didnt get it) planning on using it myself but if my own buff beats it then its a cash cow and a highly unpredictable one at that.

I have verified the paldin Yaulp IV overwrites this effect. Be warned, Knights of Norrath.

does this stack with "scream of hate" a SK 22 spell?

Yes. My 27 SK routinely casts Grim Aura (self buff) and when Scream of Hate is cast, you get the
'Scream of Hate Recourse' icon in your Effects window in addition to the Grim Aura icon.
