I got this from General Jyleel when I turned in an illegible scroll dropped from an orc oracle. Of course I had to work on faction first so I wasn't KOS, but even at dubious he gave me (DE NEC) this level 52 spell.

Hmm.. not sure about all necros, but most solo. Solo means longer fight. At level 55+ would you pass on this DoT when fighting gargs in PoN? I'd hope not since I can run 2 or 3 splurt durations on them. You're going to do a lot of damage over time with this, and frankly it's a good spell.

Cast dooming, splurt, ignite and plague on a mob and refresh dooming as needed, watch it's HP eventually drop hard just like you were using higher damage DoTs, except, you've been able to spend this time medding back to FM for your next kill, or, if RRing, you are already killing next mob with these same DoTs.

In short, it has a lot of uses, but for root rotting, it's awesome because you can run multiple mobs at once due to the nice duration. I could see keeping 3 mobs DoTed at once, not missing a tick, with our 3 long duration DoTs.

Stop that Regen!

As others have said before me. The reason you cast a disease-based DoT isn't so much for the DPS. It's used in situations where it's more important to stop the MOB's natural regen. Cazel was an excellent example.

Throw a disease-based DoT on something and you're stopping it from healing. Not only that, you're also doing a token amount of damage per tick.

Like many of our spells, it's situational.

This is a myth, unfortunately.

Disease based dots don't stop regen. They merely look like they do because of the hp they're taking off at a slower pace than the poison dots.
Other vendors..

Any other vendors have this spell?

Why buy it
# Jun 08 2003 at 9:32 AM Rating: Default
There is one quite good reason to buy this spell. It stacks with the poison based dot. Worth it? Maybe, if you want that extra bit of damage.
Why?
# May 13 2003 at 10:48 PM Rating: Default
Can anyone explain to me why I would purchase this spell. More manna than other spells, less damage, both initially and over time. Does it last forever? Thats the only reason I could thing of that SOE would make a spell like this for this level.

Another good reason to use it is for grabbing aggro back off of those whiny healers when the group gets adds. Poison dot/disease dot/slow are a great way to fix a mob's attention without having to chase all over swinging your blades at him.

Disease lasts three times as long as poison based DoTs. They actually do MORE damage overall, and cost less mana per pt damage.

Also, they stop MoB regeneration.
RE: Why?

So this spell does 1215 hp dmg for 300 mana over 21 ticks as opposed to something like Envenomed bolt which does 1132 hp dmg for 320 for 7 tickes. Most of my kills do not last more than about a minute and a half depending on where I am hunting.
IMO, this is not that great of a spell.
But like you said, it will knock off any disease based buffs if the mob has that

You forget something very simple... The spells stack. So yes, the Poison DOT line is usually better (probably always better, really) because it does much more damage per tick, but when you're fighting a particularly tough mob, the addition of a disease DOT helps.

Disease-based buffs? Doesn't the idea of a disease conferring a beneficial effect sound odd?

The only semi-beneficial disease I can think of is lycanthropy (cheer if you played a shapeshifter in BG2!)

Well, he mean MoBs with natural regeneration.

There is a TIME and a PLACE for a spell like this to be used: on Mobs with tons of HP.

If you are on a raid or in a group, and realistically, it is gonna be a 3 to 5 minute fight (or longer), this is one more dot you can have working FOR YOU, while everyone else is doing their part. It is not a spell for fights that are short. EB would be a candidate for that instead.

So, learn WHEN to use certain spell. Some, like this one, have a good use. Like when you need a little extra dot going, on any long encounter.

Also, keep in mind....your stoping the regen of the Mob and if the fight lasts 5-10 mins it is doing more damage by stoping regen than it is with it's Dps =)

You brought up a very good point about this spell and other disease based spells. If you ever have to fight Cazel in Oasis, you will LOVE this spell because he will not be able to regen with it on him.. and trust me.. he HAS to have his regen stopped because it is incredibly fast.

I was unable to solo him with my wizard (and yes he does summon but not rapidly), because even though I was nuking the l;jlkj out of him (over 3k dmg a nuke - SCF3) he would regen what I was nuking him for just about. I was quickly running out of mana while he was almost staying even in regen with my nukes... What a BEAST! :-) If a necro would have but cast one plague dot on him, I would have owned him with np.. I think if anyone could solo him, it would be a necro or SK. Fear+ Disease DoT.
