the 82, and 78 should be reversed.

from any gem merchant in any newbie zone. Probably even the bazaar gem merchant.
It's stupidly common.
One thing though, at the time, you only needed to have one on you, and the spell didn't consume it. Don't know if that's changed.

For Shadowknight?

I just turned 34 and got this spell. I went to my regular hunting grounds to try it out, and it didn't seem that useful. It obviously absorbed the first few hits, but went away after that and regular damage ensued. Comparing how much health I had after battles with shield up and without shield up wasn't that big of a difference, I was still pretty low on health either way. So I question its usefulness? I can see how it would be good for the wizard or necro, save them a few hits while they get whatever spell off, but for a melee class, unless you constantly cast it, but that is a waste of mana and pp (20 stack of cats eyes is about 5pp which isn't much, but can be used for better use). Anyone else have a more successful way of using this bad boy?

I agree it doesn't seem like it does a lot, but there are times when that extra 50 or so hps stands between a cleric getting a heal off and a party wipe.

I would argue that this spell is useful if you have the money to burn.

Think of this spell less as a craptacular ablative, and more of a magic item gives you 27-55 hit points (with a .212 plat upkeep).

In addition, this spell will keep your Abjuration skill up to snuff.

Thing is, SK's get necro spells at later levels than the original spell is good for. You can ask the same question about lifetaps/dots/nukes, they take damage thats not worth the cast time -- you can do more melee damage than that in the time to cast once you get that high. Bottom line is around the L30ish mark, SK's get crappy spells, but as they get higher the level gap from necro to SK shrinks (as with pally/cleric) and around L50 or 55ish (differs with opinion) the hybrid classes become more powerful and truly effective spellcasters. And yes, the self-rune spells are more for non-melee classes anyways.

Remember, even though your spells suck at L30 (at least in comparison) don't neglect your arcane skills. Watching a L45 SK fail FD ten times in a row is sort of sad.

lol that's so retarded. SK spells are absolutely awesome at lvl 30ish. U can cast lifetap between swings using something like a MDS, and get ~100pt. heals plus that much dmg without even pausing in swings... that's awesome! And heat blood is like 30 dmg per tick the whole time u're fighting, plus engulfing darkness ... man i don't know how much crack u're on to say that sk spells suck at lvl 30ish... maybe this rune one does indeed suck but not the others

I agree that this one rune does absorb only a small amount of damage, I usually have it up on my 47 sk right before a battle.

In time, sk's get steelskin, which absorbs about 250 points of damage. THAT's when you'll see this line of spell get really popular. I think that eventually, they even get diamondskin, which aborbs roughly 750 points of damage (can't remember).

Also remember that the components for this spell now stack to 100, not just 20.

RE: proc lvl
# Jun 08 2004 at 6:02 AM Rating: Decent
Procs at 45, and does not need a regent when it procs. SOE was just too lazy to take it out of the spell description. A nice little proc for melee-type classes. Yeah, doesn't absorb that much damage, but sometimes even taking partial damage off helps a lot for hybrids, especially if you have high dex and this procs often.

Component isn't needed for the proc on the axe. My lvl 45 rogue has had it proc many times today and didn't say I needed a component once.

This spell makes a barrier that can take a certain amount of damage before you do. This requires a component so beware.

how can you fashion a cats eye agate into jewelry to cast this spell?
RE: component needed
# Feb 26 2003 at 7:42 PM Rating: Decent
It is not that you make a cats eye agate into jewelry, to be able to cast the spell. It's simply having the agate in inventory, where it gets consumed upon casting the spell. (Or maybe not, if you've got reagent conservation that fires off...).
