I have this spell, and it is well worth it. As stated below, when fire spells are being resisted, switch to MoE, because it is an excellent AE that creates 3 waves of damage.
In one situation, a mob resisted the first wave, but got hit with the following 2 waves. Nice punch for a spell, and well worth the mana.

It works, just go with it

Improved Damage items do not enhance the damage of this spell.

It is resisted, but not often. I find it to be very effective in zones like Harbingers Spire, Bloodfields etc. where the mobs (even the Warriors) have 'mana'.

I find Sirocco works in most situations, but on a fire resist check mob, you will be swapping out to Manastorm/MoE pretty quick.

Manastorm vs. Maelstrom of Electricity
# Jun 16 2004 at 2:23 PM Rating: Decent
I don't understand why they made Maelstrom of Electricity. Manastorm is available one level earlier, and has the SAME EXACT STATS (same resist check, same cast/recast time, same range) PLUS it has the mana burn effect. Also, Manastorm costs 48 less mana to cast. Knowing this, why would anyone spend a single copper on Maelstrom of Electricity?? Why did they even make this spell to begin with??

Because MoE is 3 waves of damage where Manastorm is only 1.

I don't know if they just changed Manastorm recently, but it is 3 waves as well. I cast it on a mob in the area, and three waves hit it and those in its immediate vacinity. Haven't bothered researching this yet; don't know if I will.

Manastorm always had 3 waves.

I have not been able to find an answer as to why Maelstrom of Electricity exists... Some people say that because Manastorm also drains mana, it has two separate resist checks which makes it easier to resist, so if that were true, Maelstrom would land more often. That's just a rumor though.
rain?

Yes it is a rain spell. 3 waves of 675.
wth?
# Mar 12 2004 at 6:58 PM Rating: Decent
I dont get it. This is 5 levels higher than sirocco yet only does 45 damage per wave more for 76 more mana? What a waste. Why bother with a higher level spell if it isnt going to be more mana efficient, more damage, or less resisted?
RE: wth?

The reason someone would buy Maelstrom of Electricity (or an even better choice - Manastorm) after already obtaining Sirocco is because Sirocco is fire-based, whereas Manastorm/MoE is magic-based. This becomes very important at higher levels, when certain mobs will resist all or most of the waves of Sirocco or Manastorm/MoE, based on their resists.

Still, I would suggest buying Manastorm and forgetting all about MoE, because you get more bang for your buck.

Targeted AE is targeted area effect, I guess. I dont have the spell, nor use it yet (only 58 atm), but it probably means it will affect mobs near targeted one as well. Would have been nice if this had been a higher level DoT (compared to Elemental Maelsrom). Oh well ...
