Apparently the problem wasn't really the familiar. Turned out that my computer was barely able to cope with the graphics in some of the newer zones, and adding the familiar was just too much for it to handle.
Did a lot of experimenting and tweaking my EQ display options, and everything runs smoothly now even with the familiar tagging along, and my graphics still look pretty good.

Unfortunately, after letting him tag along for a while I started getting graphics lockups, graphic driver resets, and then the computer crashed to a BSOD. :( This was on an older, but still fairly high-end, gaming desktop with plenty of RAM and GPU memory.
I did discover that if I summon and immediately dismiss the familiar, I can avoid the graphics issues and still get the benefit of his buffs. When I get some time I may try tweaking graphics settings to see if I can resolve the issue.
