Baking

You need to eat to live, and the baker is able to create his own food, both for personal consumption and to sell or give away to others.

What is the best way to develop and use the baking skill? Which recipes are the most and least useful? Which cities are the best places for Bakers to practice their trade?

Post your strategies on how to best develop and use the baking skill, and read, rate and coment on those posted by others.

I was wondering what a fair price is for a stack of cinnamon sticks. I figured I would come to the source. I don't want to overcharge anyone.

How much per stick?

How much per stack?

Thanks in advance.

I am a newbie barbiarn and I been improving my baking skill preatty easy and making profit too....

All the stragieties I see are make edible Goo or this or that for other parts of teh world but Barbiarnas have a lot of meat.

I noticed that when I killed all those wolves and shamans they carried steaks a lot of times. So I went to town and bought like a bunch of bread and baked up a bucnh of sandwiches .. My skill is rising pretty fast seems like a real good skill to me plus I am munching away on bear mwat sandwiches and everyone else has iron rations..

Plus once I can get soem mammoth meet 1 mammoth meet 1 bread = 5 sandwiches pretty good returns on that .. espcially if I paid nothing for teh meat and a few silvers for the bread wich is stocked in a shop across form teh oevn in Halas

I am by no means an expert but I am having fun and improving my skill and making money and thats what counts here i think....

Also I think teh Chunk of meat I keep fidning cna be used as well as teh spider legs? I dont know though what recipies use those...

Candied Spider:

combine in spit or oven
Makes 8 "Candied Spider" snacks, trivial at skill 88.

New Luclin Recipes now work!
# Feb 15 2002 at 9:14 PM Rating: Excellent
As of the patch today, three new Luclin recipes work. They are:

Batwing Pie
1. Clump of Dough
2. Batwings
3. Spices
(requires pie tin)

Bug Bites
1. Wasp Wings
2. Bixie Parts
3. Spider Legs
4. Fire Beetle Eye

And the...
Deadly Medly
1. Snake Meat
2. Wasp Wings
3. Fire Beetle Eye

I'm not sure of the trivials on these but am looking for perhaps some info on that subject.

Is baking worth even worth it?
# Feb 12 2002 at 12:42 AM Rating: Decent
Baking is kind of fun, but is it worth it to spend the plat on it? I know that everybody says yes, and i am inclined to think the same, but how much plat do you actually save yourself? Is it good for profit once you get good enough? please respond.
RE: Is baking worth even worth it?
# Mar 20 2002 at 12:25 PM Rating: Excellent
Fish Rolls (Fresh Fish & Bat wings, triv 135) sells pretty good to the local monks. It is classed as a "Banquet" so it lasts longer (Fish Fillets is only a "meal") and is low weight.

Probably the best seller is the stat foods. Who couldn't use a couple of points in free stats (no matter what class, there is a stat food for you~ str, dex, int, wis, even resists. Almost any stat you want) ~ that doesn't even take an equipment slot and can be made to last forever?

If that doesn't get people interested, just think about Dragon Steaks: +4 Str, +4 Dex, +4 Sta, +4 Agi, +4 Wis, +4 Int, +4 Cha. All without taking an equipment slot. Ask yourself how much people would pay for a ring or a range slot item with those kind of stats.
RE: Is baking worth even worth it?
# Mar 12 2002 at 7:21 AM Rating: Decent
Yes is the answer.
Making Fish Fillets (Fresh Fish + Jug of Sauce)
Ingredients cost about 9 gold for stack of each, you yield 2 stacks of Fillets which will sell for about 8 gold each stack = Profit 7 gold.
Times that a number of times and you've got a fair amount of plat coming in.
cinnamon and brownie parts
# Jan 28 2002 at 9:26 PM Rating: Decent
I got a few bundles of cinnamon i've been foraging in Gfay and don't know what to do with them. I assume that they're too valuable to eat as I have heard of desperate bakers buying them for good sums of money. Where could i auction these off at? And same with brownie parts. Got one when i was a young(er) ranger and didn't know what to do with it so i sold it or something can't remember.

Should i just save these for when i start my baking trade?

The only thing I've found so far...and this was done just by trying different stuff, was owlbear steaks and sonic wolf steaks...same as before, jug o sauces, spices and meat.

What I would like to know is, how to make beer braised owlbear or sonic wolf, because the short beer, spices and meat combo is not working. I've even tried putting 2 short beers, tried substituting the short beers with the owlbear/sonic wolf brew (sold by vendors)and nothing.

Down and Dirty Baking ~ by Cormath Loremaster
----------------------------------------------

Of all the trade skills, Baking is the easiest, cheapest, and fastest to master.

If Freeport is accessible to you, the dock sells Fish and the magic guild sells Batwings. I used the Oven near the Freeport bank since there is also a forge, klin, pottery wheel, and brew barrel there as well as the bank to transfer items.

If you are unable to use Freeport, EC just before the WC zone have an inn and the side hut has a gem merchant that sells batwings. Have a newbie buy them if need. Else make a mule and stock up in Freeport.

Start with this item since the wings and fish can be store bought cheap.

Fish Rolls (Trivial at 132)
Batwing + Fresh Fish

(Note - It took Tamroc (my alt on Tunare) six backpacks [3fish/3wing] to get skill to 92 for a cost of under 25plat.)

For the next step, I suggest doing all of these as available. Often the merchants in newbie zones will have Clunks of Meat you can buy just by running to all the merchants. When the merchants run out just farm some more and check back with the merchants often. (You did save the Chunks of Meat from collecting pelts/skins from Tailoring?)

Meat Pie (Trivial at 142)
Chunk of Meat + Clump of Dough + Pie Tin

Rat Ear Pie (Trivial at 142)
Rat Ear + Clump of Dough + Pie Tin

Beetle Eye Pie (Trivial at 142)
(Added cost of Spices but Fire Beetles most often drop one or two eyes.)
Fire Beetle Eye + Spices + Clump of Dough + Pie Tin

I've found Halas is good for the Baking trade as well, or at least for the first step. In Halas they sell fish and jugs of sauce, you can raise your skill up to 82 making fish fillets this way. My character isn't very smart, being a monk, but got up to 82 extremely quickly in about 20-25 plat (been awhile). After that, I went to Freeport to raise my skill up further.

P.S. ~ If anyone sees me in Gfay, I need those Cinnistix!

Many baking supplies are sold at the first inn in EC just west of Freeport. There is a smaller single hut to the west of the triple hut "inn" there - you can find many baking supplies there.

I've collected rat ears in Qeynos Hills and the Qeynos newbie area. If you're looking for them to make pie, you can use fire beetle eyes instead - all pies trivial at 142.

A spit is the equiv of an oven, anything you can bake in a town, you can do on the fly with the spit. It is kinda heavy, but when you get your skill to the point where you are making Str, Agi, and Dex food, you will appreciate it.

Prob is, I think the weight is 3.0, and that can be a lot.

Iksar baking
# Oct 29 2001 at 12:11 AM Rating: Decent
Baking as an Iksar can be a problem--(Especially on firona vie server)
Problems---
1) Next to nothing drops ingredients for baking in Cabilis. Spider legs is about it.

2) Can't even fish normal fresh fish, get named bass every success. Can't use them in baking that I've found.

3) Get to the main land to harvest supplies, and gotta carry tons of stuff with u since u can't bake anywhere near you.

4) Very few merchants will sell to you and none that sell fresh fish are available without a lot of faction work.

But still it's kinda fun working on it, I love the challenge.

Note:
I can't get any Race meats to drop---can't seem to find a list of where and what drops the race meats. I've slaughtered the halflings near neriak for a while and haven't had a single meat drop---kinda frustrating.

Keep em sizzling.

Yes, unfortunately brownie parts are an ingredient to some of the most useful items. However, the two easiest ways (level wise) to get brownie parts, are to hunt in the forest area of Greater Faydark close near the Lesser Fay zone, (brownie scouts there are around level 5) or to hunt Nillipus the Brownie in Rivervale (around level 17). The fastest way though, is the slightly dangerous, "let's go hunt Lesser Fay" method, in which you can either kill brownie scouts and outcasts (spawning from the pixie tower and roaming the hills in Lfay) or go kill the brownie merchant camp (your pretty much KOS anyway) by following the right wall from the Gfay zone.

Since nobody answered I did some empiracle research. So far (there may be others) there are snacks, meals, hearty meals, and banquets. The difference is Food/days provided. Frist off there does not seem to be any difference in consumption whether you are stationary or continually running and fughting. The Food/days provided are something like .3 .6 1.25 and 2. (these numbers are very rough, to be refined as time permits). Probably not at all if nobody but me is intersted. Anyhow what that means is that if you could buy a meal foe 1g and a snack for 5s, that wiuld be roughly the same number of food/days for the money. Space and weight not taken into consideration. If this is of interest please comment, if not I'll shut up and carry on, on my own.

OK I'm a newbee. Question 1, unless otherwise specified the ingredients for the recipies are combined in what, an oven? Question 2, I an seeing hints that certain food items will last longer (read feed you for multiple days) than other food items. This might explain why anyone would ever buy an iron ration which is far more expensive than a regular ration. If this is the case has anyone analysed the consumption rate and published it? Question 3, (and this may be impacted by the answer to 2 above) why would anyone in their right mind... well ok anyone, want to combine a fish which is edible anyway and a bat wing to make something else that is edible and suffer a partial success rate? Something is missing in this equasion.
RE: Food Value
# Oct 18 2001 at 9:46 AM Rating: Default
In regards to the fish / batwing question... A Fish Roll weighs 0.1 AND is a banquet. It's MUCH lighter than a regular fish (which ways 1.0 I believe) which is good for us monks, and it's a Banquet sized meal instead of a regular sized meal (lasts MUCH longer). =)

Unfortunatly no. Killing the brownies seems to be the only way. Sometimes you will find a higher level character doing one of the quests in the zone, and they might be killing the brownies (but not for the meat). You might try auctioning for the meat in L Fey and see if anyone has it.
