Baking

You need to eat to live, and the baker is able to create his own food, both for personal consumption and to sell or give away to others.

What is the best way to develop and use the baking skill? Which recipes are the most and least useful? Which cities are the best places for Bakers to practice their trade?

Post your strategies on how to best develop and use the baking skill, and read, rate and coment on those posted by others.

baking to 140 under 40p

FYI
firstly you will need at least 1 skill point in baking,a spit and a filleting knife.(i think a filleting knife is blacksmith skill and u will need 3 metal bits and scaler mold plus flask of water trivial around 20)
next u will need to find a merchant that sells bear meat and plenty of it.i went to shadow haven there is a merchant near the echo caverns that sell all sorts of meat.(sorry forgot her name).
put filleting knife and 1 bear meat in spit, hit combine and repeat.you will end up with bear fillet if successful.do this until trivial around 140.

Actually you dont need a point in baking to get started. The easiest method to boost your baking past master has to be fish rolls, lots and lots of fish rolls. Go to WFP buy stacks of batwings, go to EFP buy stacks of Fresh fish, Go to NFP and use oven. You will fail alot at first but as time goes on you will have alot of banquet meals that are very light. This recipe will take you to 135. Became master baker in roughly 15 min.

Brownies, pixies and baking!
# Jul 11 2002 at 7:30 AM Rating: Decent
After quite a few days running around Greater Faydark tracking pixie's and the odd brownie a friend told me about pixie nirvana! Yes, it means heading into Lesser Faydark but luckily for me I'm a druid and can turn myself into a wolf so the red (to me at level 34) brownie scouts ignore me and I can use track to make sure that horrible horse isn't around. I would probably go back to Gfay if it is.

Anyway, if you want to collect pixie dust and brownie bits quickly I would suggest getting to about level 35 and heading over to the Pixie Tower in Lesser Dark (Number 3 on the EQAtlas map), kill the tricksters with 1 hit, the pranksters with 2 hits and avoid the jongleurs - they have some nasty faction hits for good characters. There are enough of the tricksters and pranksters spawning to keep you busy.

Now, what seems to be happening, in both Gfay and Lfay is that killing the pixie's causes brownies to spawn. The ones in Gfay are level 3ish and are an easy kill. The ones that spawn in Lfay right near the pixie tower are brownie outcasts and they are level 31-33. They often spawned so close to me that I got messages that the outcast was buffing itself! I was able to solo them with my druid. Killing them as they spawn then killing more tricksters and pranksters will cause either another brownie outcast to spawn or Thistle Underbrush. Thistle is a bit of an undercon - he hits harder than the outcasts.

All of the brownies I killed in Lfay had brownie parts on them. They outcasts also have arrows on them which is for the Etched Ivy Leggings quest for rangers. Thistle drops Braided Ivy Cords - highly sought after by young druids. They sell for about 400pp on The Rathe server!

Hope this helps the dedicated bakers out there - I'm up to 153 so I have a few more brownies to kill yet!

As of May 26th or so, no more rennet. Good luck finding it anyway! Maybe they'll bring it back in a few days. Verant got kind of mad that players were actually making a profit from a tradeskill, instead of throwing their money away for dubious benefit, so poof goes the cheese.

The spoon was not destroyed in the baking attempt.

might be useless to respond to such an old post, but just in case nobody else knows, stats food never has to be eaten and the effects are permanent. You place the stat food in the slot that would be eaten next and there you go! With the new Halas 10 lbs pies you get a permanent +5sta/dex/agi and 30hps with a simple recipe! Make sure to forcefeed with rations to prevent eating up your stats.

RE: pie tin, pot, smoker, skewers

Well acually both. Pie Tins are made with smithing skill, but requires a ceramic liner, made by pottery. The pot, smoker and skewers can be made with eather skill. I am not sure if there is a differance between the smithed items or the pottery ones.

Fish Rolls: High Commodity
# Mar 24 2002 at 9:01 PM Rating: Good
In two nights (total about 4 hours of baking) I became a lvl 139 baker. I made a ton of fish rolls (from lvl 1 to 135) then made all kinds of pies from veggies, fruit, and berries that I had been foraging and saving (from 135 to 139 in about 10 minutes).

I gave most of my fish rolls away, or sold stacks for about 2pp. But then i got chewed out by another baker for selling them so cheap. He said that i was making it too hard to sell them at a decent price. When i asked him what a decent price was he said 5 to 10 pp per stack!! (5pp is 400% markup from cost!). The problem was that I couldn't find anyone to buy them for even 2pp per stack. He told me to go to East Commonlands and i did, but no one would buy them there either. And I'm still looking for someone to buy my delicious goods that i've slaved over for so long. Maybe I'm just impatient.

Baking is really fun, though. It's quite a novelty to be able to make cool things like pixie powder cinnesticks, berry pies, beer-braised mammoth, birthday cake, and lots of stat enhancing goodies that can't be bought at the local supermarket. Non-bakers get a kick out of buying things like that, too. I had a guy the other night slobering at my feet because he couldn't wait to get his hands on my fresh baked fruit pies. That is what makes baking a really fun hobby (especially for roleplayers).

Bottom line: It can be fun and good profit to bake, but very tedious and its sometimes hard to find buyers. I think the market is already too saturated, so i don't mind posting these "secrets" anymore.

FYI: Those who can forage (Rangers and Druids) make best bakers because we can get things other bakers can't, like veggies, cinnamon, rabbit meat, roots (for brewing), Tea leaves (for brewing), Marr cherries, and other cool stuff. Otherwise it might be expensive to buy these specialty items off of those who can forage, if you can find someone who doesn't eat them right away or is actually willing to sell them to you.

The recipe table at EQ Traders Recipes is chock full of handy information, but the printed version is difficult to read.

So I saved the web page, then imported the table into a database program. (Microsoft Access is what I used). A few minutes spent formatting, and voila - now I have lists by main ingredient and by triviality.

I hope I haven't violated any horrible copyright laws by re-arranging the lists in the privacy of my own home....
Great Guide to Becoming a Master Baker

Hey all -

I decided I wanted to pick up a trade skill quickly and inexpensively this weekend. After looking around, it seemed that baking might be the trick. With an int/wis of around 80, and after about 20pp and a couple hours, I now possess a skill of 103 at baking. Here is the guide that I followed:

http://www.eqtraders.com/learn/learn_baking2.htm

Following the guide above, I went to Freeport to work on my skill. The guide did have you go out into E. Commons to get wings and frostings, but you can get those items in Freeport as well (noted in the Key NPC's paragraph below).

Key NPC's are:
1) Pincia Brownloe (unlabled building next to monk's guild, W. Freeport) - sells Spices, Jug of Sauces, and Frosting
2) Tarker Gargurd (Port Authority, E. Freeport) - sells fish
3) Lysa Truegreen (upstairs at the Academy of Arcane Sciences, W. Freeport) - sells bat wings

Ovens that I used are located at:
1) Traders Holiday (E. Freeport), but Grub and Grog is actually closer to Tarker Gargurd
2) Empty shop near Torligs Herbs & Medicines (W. Freeport) - building 14 on the following map: http://eqatlas.com/wfreeportmap.html

Trained Baking at my guild, and dropped a few extra points in. I hate watched the skill increase from 2 to 3, so I dropped points for a skill of 11. Just a personal preference.

(following the guide)
I) Phase I - Bat Wing Crunchies until Skill 46
This can all be done in W. Freeport - NEVER have to zone until your skill reaches 46.
Combine:
1 Bat Wing from Lysa Truegreen
1 Frosting from Pincia Brownloe
Use the oven in the empty shop near Torligs Herbs & Medicines.

II) Phase II - Fish Filets until Skill 82
Has to be done between W. Freeport (sauces) and E. Freeport (fish).
Combine:
1 Fresh Fish from Tarker Gargurd
1 Jug of Sauces from Pincia Brownloe
Use the oven in Phase I, or oven at Trader's Holiday. A successful combine results in 2 fish filets, so this actually starts to become profitable (sort of).

III) Phase III - Fish Rolls until Skill 135
Again, done between W. Freeport (bat wings) and E. Freeport (fish).
Combine:
1 Fresh Fish from Tarker Gargurd
1 Bat Wing from Lysa Truegreen
Use either oven from Phases II. Fish rolls are banquet food items and they are light - so they are desired by people who weight conscious.

I stopped at a Skill of 103. Currently, I am hunting in Great Divide, and just wanted a high enough skill to be able to make the tizmak steaks (+2str/+1sta). Pretty nice.

Good luch and happy baking.

I am a new baker to use the meat I had been finding in the Commons areas, offer my companions variety of diet, and to support my gem habit.

Though I am just beginning (skill 20 I think), these are the things I have found so far.

1. Buy a spit if you have the space and weight. You can make food in the field and it's a 6 slot GIANT container. Costs just a few gp and well worth it.

2. Bat wing crunchies are wonderful. A request to the older ones of us: Instead of buying wings from the vendors, offer a low level 1-2pp for a stack. It really made my day when people did it for me. A single pp was a BIG deal in those days. It's a good feeling and will help the economy I think, keep the money out of the NPC's.

3. Always loot the bodies and offer a token to people who get the meat. If you have your spit and the spices and sauces handy, make them a meal in the field. They'll think it's neat because they wouldn't get much for it anyway. Again, keep the money out of the NPC vendors.

4. Look for the stat enhancing meats (bear, wolf, snake, gator steaks and rat kabobbs) not that far above bat wing crunchies to make.

One other thing, I have had a VERY hard time finding skewers and pans for the other recipes I'd really like to do. There don't seem to be many people on my server (MT) doing skills anymore. The fact that I bake (and do jewelry) even casually is unusual. I'd really like to do fruit pies and rat skewers. *sigh*

On the subject of rat skewers, is the skewer consumed when the food is? I realize if the bake fails, you get the skwer back, but what happens when the food is eaten? Reused skews, icky in RL, but practical here.

In EC there is a vedor that sells an unlimited supply of them (Inn 4 I think). It shouldn't be too hard to zone into the EC tunnel from N. Ro and just auction to buy as many stacks as you need. Plenty of newbies there that would be happy to make a plat or two for a quick run to a vendor.

fast skill increase
# Feb 26 2002 at 4:18 PM Rating: Excellent
The fastest way I have ever heard of to raise skill for characters with good faction in Freeport is to make fish rolls. Recipe is one fresh fish and one batwing. You can buy unlimited batwings from the casters guild in West Freeport and unlimited fresh fish from the merchants inside the port authority building in East Freeport. There are ovens in both of these zones or you can use a spit. This recipe trivializes at 135 if I remember correctly; which means at first you will be lucky to get one roll from a stack each of fish and batwings. To speed this up you can try to get a friendly (high level) Magician to cast Brilliance on you.
