Baking

You need to eat to live, and the baker is able to create his own food, both for personal consumption and to sell or give away to others.

What is the best way to develop and use the baking skill? Which recipes are the most and least useful? Which cities are the best places for Bakers to practice their trade?

Post your strategies on how to best develop and use the baking skill, and read, rate and coment on those posted by others.

It not neccessarily higher than other skills, you might just happen to be trying to make a more difficult dish for you skill level. If you want less failures, boost your wisdom and try the easiest dish to make before it becomes trivial, then move on to the next. However, I don't recommend doing this, since the components for this skill is the cheapest, you can try the more difficult dishes and not spend a lot of money trying to increase skill.

I am an aspiring baker. I have a Iksar monk of 16th skin. He resides on Xegony. I heard about a way to increase your skill in blacksmithing from a quest started in Lake of Ill Omen. You talk to Klok Foob and he will tell you he is hungry. He wants you to bring him a Catfish Croak Sandwich. THe ingredients are sewer catfish, thin sliced froglok, honey mush bread, and shrub lettuce. You combine it in a oven. I have the thin sliced froglok and you can only get one at a time since it is lore. I hear you can get sewer catfish in cabilis by fishing. I have no idea where to get shrub lettuce or honey mush bread. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Strage

I know sewer catfish can be caught in the Firiona Vie zone with absolute certainty. But they are no-drop, so you'd better make sure you have a high fishing skill if you want to try this. I haven't tried fishing in other Kunark zones yet.

I am not sure whether the baking books in Norrath have had their many errors corrected in the editing process of the last few patches, but I have yet to find an error in the ingredients at http://www.jetcity.com/~starbell/lostalliance/baking/eqbaking.htm and I have tried almost all of the recipies. The only mistake I found is that she indicates that only a spit can be used for some recipies, which is incorrect. I have never in my life used a spit but use an oven for everything except clumps of dough which can only be made in a mixing bowl. I hear that spits are great if you plan to do baking on the run, but as I spend a lot of time in cities anyway it is easier for me to stop there rather than carry around another container.

I know Starbell's site has been updated at least within the last couple of months, so it should be reasonably up to date as well! When I started baking, the baking books on vendors were not only wildly inaccurate but also were simply too numerous to lug them all around. So, I copied down everything on Starbell's site in an order that made sense to me and as I tried them I noted the quantity they make and when they became trivial. I emailed her with a question once and she was very helpful and friendly!

I have found that the most economical and fun way to learn to bake is simply to collect components of recipies until they are taking up too much space and then head to the nearest good baking city to spend some quality time with the oven. I prefer to do most of my baking between Qeynos and Halas, since all the things that can be store bought can be found between those two cities. This way you get to work through all kinds of different recipies for variety (you'll be the hit at every party!) and can finally put those wretched wasp wings and spider legs to a good use!

If you are interested in pottery, it complements baking perfectly. There are many tools associated with baking (skewers, pie tins, smokers, pots and more) and all can be crafted with pottery. This way, if you have a bit of extra cash to burn, you won't have to take up precious storage space to have all the tools on hand, but can craft things for use when you need them.

Good luck, good hunting, and enjoy your baking!

The page you cite is really nice, however it is unprintable. The white text does not print, and there is no link to a home page to email the author. So grab a pencil and copy ...

With IE 5 it seems to print fine with no trouble at all.

Since the text on the page is white, unless you have background enabled for printing, the words will not show up. You fix this problem by doing the follow:

Click on File and then page setup, there should be an option there to use black text. Just select that and you should be ready to go. The other way would be to select to print background but this would use a tremendous amount of ink. However, it's your choice.

Hope this info helps.

Just copy and paste into your word processor. If you can paste text only, unformated and it cleans up nicely usually.

The fastest way to increase your baking skill that I've found is making fish filets in Rivervale/Misty Thicket. A good fishing skill can reduce cost, but purchasing fish is even faster. Sauce can be purchased from Bim in the northeast corner of Misty Thicket. Turn right as you exit the tunnel from Rivervale and head for the most distant hut along the wall to find him.
Wibble Bramblebush is the friendly dock merchant in Rivervale from which you can purchase fish or bait.

Load up a backpack full of sauce from Bim, then head into Rivervale and fill half of your remaining inventory space with fish or bait, up to the number of sauce purchased. Once you have an equal number of fish and sauce, move down to the oven on the Tagglefoot farm (near the Kithicor zone) and start baking!

1 fish + 1 sauce = 2 fish fillets

Very simple and cheap. You won't have much success early on, but your skill will still improve up to 82. Intelligence and wisdom items will help learning speed and success rates respectively.

Upon reaching 82, travel to Freeport to repeat the process, replacing the sauce with bat wings to make fish rolls. Illutia mentioned above that wings are infinitely available in the West Freeport casters' guild on the second floor. Bait or fish can be obtained in either East or North Freeport.

Once fish rolls become trivial (122, I think), buy a mixing bowl in West Freeport near the concert stage. Stock up on milk and flour (available in East Commonlands among other places) and start slaughtering snakes to gather eggs. You'll need a pie tin along with ingredients for making the most convenient type of pie (fruit, berries, chunks of meat, rat ears, etc). Pies will take your skill up to 142.

After that, only chocolate items will increase your skill. Chocolate cookies, muffins, or birthday cakes can be made. All require brownie parts to make the chocolate, which can be gathered in Greater or Lesser Faydark. Tracking helps for finding the weak brownies in Greater Fay, otherwise you might be better off helping rangers with their Ivy Etched quest in Lesser Fay due to the static spawn.

If anyone knows of a confirmed recipe for a rumored "wedding cake", or any other high level baking item not listed here on Allakhazam's, please include me on an email at nexroth@oracleofvirtue.com

Good luck and eat well!

if you go to e commons and get frosting from panthar and go to third inn and get bat wings. bat wing crunchies will get your skill up cheaply before you switch to fish fillets. you can also make fish rolls in freeport since fish are avalible at dock and batwings are availible at the mage guild

Why fish with a fishing pole in rivervale, get enduring breath and jump in the water, in the corner neer the docks you can just sit and the trout swim right up to you, kill and loot fish and fish scales, be carefull of the piranas though if your a low level. if you can take the piranas on then you can do the pirana quest for experience and faction at the same time. ideal for a druid, because this is a great way to stock up on fish scales. you can get several stacks of fish and scales in no time here.

I personally got mastery of baking by using no more than two recipies. Both of them are extremely cheap to do and the materials are not expensive. I did this on Brell with a wood elf ranger with 126 charisma and 118 wisdom so keep this in mind.

Recipie one: Fresh Fish + Jug of Sauces = Fish Fillets (2)
Do this one until trivial around 80 something. You WILL get a lot of failures, but it is very cheap to just east these failures till you make them more reliably. I could sell my finished product for twice the price of materials in Rivervale.

Recipie two: Fresh Fish + Bat Wings = Fish Rolls
This recipie will carry you through around 120 skill, officially making you a master. At this point you can start experimenting with the other recipies and having fun with your baking. To get to this point it cost me approximately 35pp on materials. I moved to Rivervale and Misty Thicket where the Fish and Sauces are easily gotten. And that is where I am currently.

I personally have found much amusement in giving a slab of Blackened Tier'Dal to Dark elves just out of spite... :) Hope this helps you aspiring bakers out there, and remember, this is more a skill of fun and not of power than anything else...

Ciao, for now.

Okay, as a L9 Cleric on VZ, here's the basic cost it took for me to get from unskilled (0) all the way to 106 skill... started with 53 plat (just in case)... ended up paying 21 plat. Bought sauces from Bup out in Feerott, fish from Dooga, made fillets until skill 67, then switched directly to fish rolls [Dooga + Hkuk]. Total time? About 4 hours of work. The cost also includes selling back all the successful foods. Not bad at all, really! I have 99 INT, 127 WIS, and 60 CHA.

Finding the ingredients
# Aug 17 2000 at 5:01 PM Rating: Good
Some players will say that baking is perfectly useless. Well, in a kind of way its true. First all kinds of foods are consumed at the SAME rate. Also, different meals will not affect your character in ANY way. Some say that iron rations makes your mana regen faster. It is yet unconfirmed but i havent seen a difference myself.

Well, why should i bake then?

Because its fun... Why killing these goblins? Why making xp? Why raiding nagafen`s lair? All you play with are just pixels :) Baking has no more and no less purpose than these things.

Baking gives you the chance to see new items (the birthday cake is quite a sight hehe) and is a formidable platform for roleplaying. Also, its quite easy to practice and one of the cheapest skill of the game. I wont bother with all the recipes since Allakhazam gives an extensive frequently updated list list. Also a trivial list is also pretty useless since you can experiment yourself what suits your skill-raising needs without losing 500pp per failure. The main problem you will encounter is finding the ingredients to beguin your new passtime.

First, try to use farmed items (dropped from monsters) as less as possible if you want to raise your skill quickly. Raising your skill with mammoth sandwich will require more hunting than cooking :). Try to buy your ingredients. Personally, i raised my skill around freeport. Parthar (house in e com near w freeport zone) sells the most basic ingredients for baking such as frosting, spices, sauce....... Also, lots of easy-to-mass-produce foodstuffs require bats wings. You can buy an unlimited supply of these in w freeport mageguild 2nd floor and in e comm (kathya firespinner, near w comm zone). This will allow you to make alot of batwing crunchies and fish rolls.

After this, you can start to make some really nice meals with pies and eventually cakes. The problem with pies is finding snakes eggs to make dough. There is no place where you can buy an unlimited supply of these (at least to my knowledge), just barsh snakes :) Or ask newbies to hunt them for you. Some shops can sells a few (check around erudin). At last come the gourgeous birthday cake, proof of your mastery over baking... Youll need to get brownies parts for this. Some low brownies can spawn rarely in Gfaydark. But your most reliable source lies in Lesser Faydark. There is an old tower surronded by pixies (forgot loc). If you kill a tons of pixies some brownies outcasts may spawns. They have some chance to drop part when killed. Beware tough, youll need to be 35+ to easily solo them. If you got a whole groups of 50ties who dont know what to do you can try to persuade them to attack the main brownie village. There is two brownie guards there that are very dangerous. They hit hard, roots and have a nasty habit of resisting everything you throw at them. If you manage to kill them, youre free to slaughter all the little cute green brownies inside for your chocolate feast.

Thats all for today, post further question if you feel like it...
