Baking

You need to eat to live, and the baker is able to create his own food, both for personal consumption and to sell or give away to others.

What is the best way to develop and use the baking skill? Which recipes are the most and least useful? Which cities are the best places for Bakers to practice their trade?

Post your strategies on how to best develop and use the baking skill, and read, rate and coment on those posted by others.

I have all of this wood elf and gnome meat, but I need a smoker to bake with them. Where in all of Norrath could i find a smoker?
RE: Smoker
# May 21 2001 at 2:12 PM Rating: Default
Smokers can be made cheaply by potters,. A rogue or enchanter need poison vials for different purposes which are a much higher skill than a smoker to make. A smoker is not a container, you just put it in the oven same as you would skewers or a pie tin...
RE: Smoker
# May 21 2001 at 11:52 AM Rating: Default
Smiths can make smokers for you - all of the necessary molds are in Surefall Glade (skewer, smoker base, smoker support) but you'll need metal bits too (closest to Q is erudin).

I know you can get smokers at in Cabilis, because while looking for a spit I came across one. I cant remember exactly where, but I would think either in the market square or one of the buildings next to the bank.
RE: Smoker
# May 19 2001 at 9:04 PM Rating: Default
You only need the smoker for the Woodelf parts, for Gnomies you make Kabobs (yummy!) for kabobs you need Skewers..
Both the Skewers and the Smoker can be made with either Pottery, or Smithing.. you cant buy them from a vendor unless someone sold one..
And if you cant find someone to make them for you, then Give the meat to Me !! ;)

p.s. where the heck did you find Gnome meat ? I've been looking all over for it ;)

Lockjaw also drops some rare meat of other races when he is killed... pretty much left alone, for the most part, as I got some High Elf meat and Gnome meat from him once.

From Qeynos, the two places for jugs of sauce and spices I found are in W. Karana (in a cottage near the Qeynos Hills border, when you enter WK turn left) and Toxx. Forest (in a cottage near the Erudin border, when you enter the forest turn left).

Christlin Baker in Western Karana, up in the northwestern corner, as this person said, sells most baking goods. You can also get them in Halas. I'm not sure what the name of the shop is, but you turn right after entering Halas, go to the building on the opposite side of the well. Go up the ramp and go to the merchant in the back left corner. She sells many cooking goods too.

Merchants don't usually sell pots..you have to find a smithy or get into smithing yourself and make some.

I made Kobold Kabobs, but it's been a month since I ate them so I don't remember the exact stats. I made them like rat kabobs, same ingredients. I think they gave me an agility bonus, maybe a +2, but I honestly don't remember exactly. Just make them like you would rat kabobs.

Stat Enhancing Foods
# May 17 2001 at 10:11 AM Rating: Default
I have a question about stat-enhancing foods: do your stats go up simply by having these items in your inventory? I bought, a few weeks ago, some Paladin Pickles from Boomba the Big out of curiosity and didn't notice a change in my stats?

You get the stat bonus for whatever food is in Your TOP inventory slot (ie for the thing you are about to eat) force eating +stat food doesn't seem to do anything for you.. altho I have on occaision left Drake or Wyvern pickles in my top slot, and Force ate Fish rolls ;)

RE: Stat Enhancing Foods
# May 17 2001 at 3:02 PM Rating: Decent
You have to put it at the top of your food and eat it naturally for the stats to kick in, you can't force feet it.
RE: Stat Enhancing Foods
# May 18 2001 at 5:31 PM Rating: Default
No, you get the bonus because it is in your inventory, not because you actually ate it.

Look at the example I posted.. with Wyvern pickles in my top food slot I get the +3 to sv magic, I force eat fish rolls so that I'm never hungry but since the pickles are in my top slot, I never lose the sv magic even though i theoretically never actually *ate* any of them.
Now reallistically, I'm not that obsessed with keeping my wyvern pickles, I just tried this to see if it worked.

Tins, Pans, Pots
# May 14 2001 at 2:27 PM Rating: Default
First of all, it's cheaper to have these made by pottery than by smithing. Secondly, I had a hard time finding anyone who could make them, so I made my own character and became a master potter as well.

For 30pp my level 1 Iksar monk became a master potter in Cabilis in one evening and made one each of the baking pans and pots, except the bread tin. (Don't make bread--you have to have a new tin for every loaf).

Cabilis is really the best place for pottery because you can get all the supplies in one place. No other city offers a supply this good.

A little cross-posting: the key to -learning- pottery is to not fire your work. Firing almost never fails but firing sheets cost a lot of money. The finished product sells back for just less than the cost of a firing sheet, so it makes no sense to fire anything while you are just learning. Clay, water and sketches are pretty cheap, so make the raw pottery, then get rid of it without firing it. Only fire the things you want to keep, like the baking things. For a few things you'll need metal bits, which a very low level smith can make for you.

Or, if you are on Xev, look me up and I'll be happy to make all your baking pans for cost (a handful of plat for a set).

Eggs
# May 14 2001 at 2:17 PM Rating: Default
I'm a master baker and trying to raise my skills above 135, which means it's time to do a lot of baking. I went to Qeynos newbie area and bought eggs from the newbs there, but there are other egg options.

Combined 1 egg with 1 cup of flour and 1 milk, and you yield the following clumps of dough:

1 foraged basilisk egg = 5 clumps of dough
(I foraged these in Rathe Mtns)

1 looted basilisk egg = 15 clumps of dough
(Looted off bassies in Lavastorm)

1 aviak egg = 5 clumps of dough

1 gator egg = 5 clumps of dough
(I think gator eggs came off gators in Feerott)

1 griffon egg = 7 clumps of dough

Getting these higher yielding eggs can really stretch your baking budget.

Happy baking, my fellow gourmets.

The recipies I'm missing are :

Cobalt Cupcakes
Pickled Wyvern
Pickled Drake
Pickled Siren
Pixie Pickles

The condiments you need to get to process velious meats are sold in Cobalt Scar (you'll need Claws of Veeshan faction to safely travel there - and if you do make it there, if you are a first timer, don't forget to snatch yourself up a CS tooth for easy ports in later).

If you are not KoS in Skyshrine, then you are not KoS in Cobalt Scar....so run to SS and con the guards. Anything less than dubious and you'll need to hunt tons and tons of frost giants in Great Divide to get your faction (I've killed maybe a couple of hundred FG's and still have only manged to go from 'threateningly" to "dubiously" - which is okay, as dubious is not quite KoS).

Baking supplies are sold at the first INN (from Freeport) in EC. It's one of the small huts (not the actual INN). And bread (tho I had not seen it until recently) is sold throughout Freeport, but I recommend a place near the Bank in No.Freeport. This place is located as follows: As you enter the market court yard, immediately turn right. When you get to the end (the wall), there is a building on your left . . . buy bread from the two merchants on the first floor.

You'll need to commission bread pans, pie tins, cake rounds and muffin tins from a smith (not expensive items...I had a fellow make four cookie cutters and two cookpots for me and he only wanted like 3pp - I gave him 30). Cookie sheets? I have never seen a recipe that requires cookie sheets. But you can also commission cookie CUTTERS from a smith (in various shapes :).

At Trader's Holiday in East Freeport you can buy a spit, cookpot and skewers.

I noticed that certain player made foods now last longer than the average bread. This is brilliant, as i now have a REASON to eat fish rolls :).

However, my water now runs out much faster and i have to buy like 60 waters for every 20 fish rolls.

Is there any long lasting drinks? And if so, where can i get them? brewing? magic? please reply

All food and drink is now rated by time and has the length it lasts in it's descripition. If your food says this, here is how long it lasts.
Snack -- Whistle Wetter
15 Minutes per 1
Meal -- Drink
30 Minutes per 1
Hearty Meal -- Flowing Drink
1 Hour per 1
Banquet Meal -- Refreshing Drink
2 Hours per 1
Feast -- Enduring Drink
3 Hours per 1

Most of the longer lasting drinks come from Velious but there are a few others. Some of them are...
Fuzzlecutter Formula 5000, Canteen of Slush Water, Jum Jum Juice, Bladder of Otter Milk, and Surefall Sap

These are the three pickled combos I make most often, though you can also use troll meat.

Freeport. If you have the cash you can raise your skill to 135 quickly by making fish rolls. Buy a ton of fish at the Freeport dock (inside the first building you go through when you get off the boat). Then go to EC to the last inn. There's an Erudite merchant in the east building who will sell you all the bat wings you want. Combine one of each to make fish rolls. Hope that helps.

could use some help. This site and discussion has great info on recipes and stat adjustments, but nothing on locations or how to start. Need to know this info:
1. Where the recipe book and cooking vendors are, the books are all rated but no locations.
2. What you combine in the oven exactly. Just the stuff from the mysterious recipe book or do you need the book itself in there to make it?

Other sites like castersrealm have this info neatly laid out for other trades but nothing for cooking. What I really need to know is where all the books come from. FP and riversnore are most convenient for me. gracias for any help

Your missing out if all your looking at is the discussion.
1. Don't worry, no one really uses the books unless they have an unearthly need to roleplay so bad that they forget to eat in RL. The recepies from all the books can be found in one of the side menus under the hyperlink of Skills, note: This is not under Strategy;Skills, it is by itself. Then go into Baking;recepies.
2. Although burning the book would be the best use for it, just don't buy one, it has no use, and no, you don't put it in the oven with the ingredients.
