Begging

Begging is the ability to get small coins from various NPC's. It is a very dangerous skill, since many prefer to kill the begger rather than give him anything.

What is the best way to use this skill? How and where can you improve your begging skill? What, if any, use is this skill? What type of money can be made through begging?

Post your strategies on how to best develop and use the begging skill, and read, rate and comment on those posted by others.

My character started in Felwithe. When I lvl up I usually go swimming and fishing so I'll go
to the fishing spot by the Fish House and while I'm fishing practice my spells to get them up
and beg from ? the Pure constantly. She's never gone agro on me. Of course I've never got a copper from her. I'm at lvl 8 with begging @ 45.

I heard a dirty little rumor that beg is also a less effective taunt (a taunt none the less). I am at skill 119 as of today and I have only begged monsters im melee fighting (attack off/beg/attack on). As far as the taunt I recall once seeing myself in a group battle and in a fight while the mob was attacking someone else, without a taunt or swing from me I begged him and saw him turn and start hitting me (I think that tells me that it IS a taunt) however I've only seen that once so it's obviously not a good taunt. I would also like to inform others of the main problem with melee begging :). Here's the situation: 1.) you take attack off 2.) You beg 3.) healer heals you 4.) you now have the healer targeted. You HAVE to keep a close close eye on this... first time it ever happened to me I went through half a battle "attacking" my cleric :). Cromulent Meurtsouvent, Erudite Paladin of Bristlebane

P.S. feel free to show up on my server and gimme a message if you wanna chat about begging (not to many of us beggars out there)

Don't know what it is you're doing but turning off autoattack shouldn't drop your target and you will only target your cleric if you do not have anyone targeted when he heals you.

Er, I have a begging of 107 now and I've never gotten more than 1cp, though I do succeed in that about 50% of the time. I've heard what you get may be affected by your charisma, but I have no confirmation on that. I've read all the current input on begging, but I don't understand how to get more than 1cp. Well, I'll keep on begging to 200 just to see what there is to see.

Cha has a BIG effect on how fast you learn this skill and how much you get. The best way to raise your cha is to get "A Crude Stein" and use it when you beg. Its stats are +15 cha and +10 sta... you can buy one for 30pp. This skill is also mostly directed at enchanters, magicians, and necros because for practice you can beg your pet for cash and improve skill that way. You will eventually be able to get 1 or 2 pp by the time you get to 200 if your cha is good. I find this useful only for getting free food when you get to high levels... you simply beg and then buy food with what you get.

But I suggest that everyone learns all the skills that they can because you never know when Verant will add something to the game and make a skill such as begging a major item in completing a quest.
This skill isn't worth the effort
# Nov 07 2000 at 1:56 PM Rating: Excellent
It takes too long to raise your begging skill to the point where you can actually get money with a reasonable success rate. Even when you do, you can't beg from the same NPC over and over because he/she will run out of coins fairly quickly.

But if you have a pet, or will be waiting around anyway, you might as well work it up a little. Who knows, maybe one day they'll change the skill to make it more usefull.

How to Raise Begging... Easy :)

ok, ANY npc can be used to raise begging. VERY FEW non-speaking ones will go aggro. These are just basics.

Here are the best ones:

Pets (already mentioned often, good enough to mention here too)

Mobs someone else is fighting (what're they gonna do, turn and hit you instead? haven't seen it yet)

Mobs YOU are fighting (tunr off attack, click beg, turn on attack. Quick 'n easy.)

Mobs you run by (if you are bored on a run from Steamfont to Kaladim, just select any mob on the way and give it a run-by begging.)

Mobs you are building a trade skill on (I have been wasting wolves for meat to raise cooking. What do i do? Beg em, THEN commit wolfecide)

I've heard begging from boats in the other thread. Never tried it, cannot vouch.

Things you DO NOT want to raise skill with:

Vendors (they may be the rich ones, but they want to keep their money the most.)

Any NPC less than amiable (they already don't like you, and you're gonna ask them for more?)

The PoD (well duh... even a lvl 60 will be flat on his @$$ in less than a minute, and I doubt the PoD is gonna give you his stuff anytime soon)

To note:

I have gotten the MOST skill off of the lowbie mobs i beg right before I mow over for my trade items. I got the LEAST from begging from pets. This has just been my experience... Lord knows I begged from pets 10X more than from random NPC's

As for who to beg from for actual coins? don't ask, I haven't tried. Go find a post titled "how to GET stuff from begging... Easy :)"

guess it might be a bug.. A friend of mine got 1pp once while begging from a boat. his skill was probably 6 or so at the time.. didn't happen again though.

Boats work to beg from, you just have to find the right place on the boat. The Oot boat is near the main mast. The decripit barge in TD is near the center. I have not tried to beg from the big boat from BB to Kunark, so I don't know where the place to beg is. I have raised my skill numerous times doing this between harbors. My skill is around 160.

Skill of 175....is it worth it?
# Aug 20 2000 at 10:58 PM Rating: Excellent
I'm Reztarn Solarflare. I have a 175 in begging because I've gotten a few friend Fishbone Earrings. During the hours of waiting for Hadden I would beg from the man in the shed. Here is some info.

He cons lower than indiff but yet I can beg from him hundreds of times in a row while sitting down.

At a skill of 175 the most I have ever gotten is 2sp from a North Freeport Guard (Paladin). Never had them attack me even though they con dubusiously and I beg over and over from the same one. Usually I get 1cp.

I have not tried to beg from merchants. Some NPC simply don't have money but you can still raise the skill.

Why do it? If you find yourself with time on your hand it is one other board thing to do. Useful? Not in any cituation I have seen yet.

I vote Reztarn Solarflare "King of the Beggars"!!!

Good luck to ya... I would never have the patience to spend so much time on a useless skill. Except to say that I had the highest skill in the game in it, and You, my friend, already 'own' that dubious honor. God bless ya!

Just my 2 cp worth...

Useful skill?

I am a 41 Human SK at the moment, and I have raised my begging skill to 161 so far.

I have mainly accomplished this by begging from a pet (mine or someone elses).
You get no money that way obviously, but it does raise skill.

Begging is *the* toughest skill to raise bar none.

I guess I raise it out of boredom while meddin/restin, but perhaps someday a quest
may come along that requires a Master Begger. (shah right!) :)

I would only recommend Begging for the most bored of souls. =)

Instill doubt/intimidate

You want to talk about taking an eternity? People started to hate me in Highkeep as I'd constantly practice it during downtime. I had a noisy whip at the time, too. =P

I'm still waiting to hear about some k3wl l3wtz obtainable only by begging for it! I doubt it'll ever come to be.

It's been said before, begging take's a Very long time to raise the skill, but it can be done.

First: don't expect to get much before your skill reaches 60 or 70, even then it's still hard to get anything.

Second: you should not rely on this skill as a continuous source of cash.

Third: Don't ever beg from an NPC more than once or twice in a row without zoning, this is how beggers get hurt.

Fourth: If you are going to press your luck with the NPC's make sure you can take them in a fight otherwise you can kiss your a$$ goodbye.

Ok, with that said, how do you get your skill up to the kind of level where it will do anything for you? Well, all I can say is, a pet of a player is going to be your best friend from now on. Find a pet of a PC that con's at least blue and start begging, this is the quickest way to gain skill that won't get you killed. The other way to get your skill up is a little more dangerous and slower but it still works. The second way to get your begging up is during combat, if you have enough HP to survive the fight then quickly turn off the Auto Attack and press the Hot Key for beg and quickly turn Auto Attack back on (you did make a Hot Key for beg didn't you?). If you get low on HP's while doing this you may want to forgo the begging because you're going to need all the hit's you can get at that point.

Once you have your skill up to the point where you think you can start getting stuff for it, then start shopping for suckers. Go around and Con any friendly NPC that you think would be a good target. The best NPC's to beg from are low blue or green NPC's that are warmly, but amiably and indifferent still give good coin. If all you can find are Red, Yellow or White NPC's just remember rule Three and you should be alright, all NPC's will eventually attack you if you beg from them too much so watch it, begging is considered a form of hostile act to the NPC's and always has a chance to agro them.

Begging can be a very usefull skill when you're running low on cash and need just that few more CP to get what you need and, although it pales in comparison with the money making potential of the rogues PickPocket skill, it is one that almost anybody has, and should be honed to at least a degree of excelance.

I'd add that I have yet to be attacked by the NPC Monks in Freeport for begging. I usually beg off of the the male one fighting in the front yard of the Ashen Order house, since he just happens to be close to the bridge when I'm reay to go do something else.

I for some odd reason you do get attacked there, try sitting down. And begging really does take FOREVER to get up. I'm around 25 right now, but have yet to even get a copper off of anyone.

Rasing Begging
# Aug 18 2000 at 3:45 PM Rating: Decent
Ways to raise begging:
1. beg from boats
2. beg from mobs that are in combat
3. begging from ambily or better con mobs
I first got something form begging at skill of 41. It was a whole copper. Got a skill of 65 now and get a copper about half the time.
RE: Rasing Begging
# Apr 10 2001 at 9:08 AM Rating: Decent
In my experience, begging from boats doesn't work. Begged the whole trip from Freeport to Butcherblock and didn't increase skill, where begging from a pet I got 3 or 4 skill increases in 5 minutes.

I've been begging from Faren in Qeynos while fishing, and from level 6 I have gained about 10 levels and as many copper from him.
Begging!
# Aug 18 2000 at 2:48 PM Rating: Default
Well beggin takes a long, long time to go up by itself. i have 81 in begging and i can get a few coppers and occasionally a silver from begging. Do NOT beg from a guard...they will attack you. And i wouldn't beg from merchants either, they also sometime attack you. The best thing to PRACTICE begging on are pets. To actually get money, beg from humanoid creatures. Faction does affect begging, but i can still get a copper or 2 from that dubious NPC. early on, it takes FOREVER to get begging to go up. for pet types, while medding, target your pet and just click beg whenever it comes up. anyway, that's it, dont expect to make a profit from begging, but you can buy some food and water if ya die---just beg some cash then buy it.
