Languages

Almost every race in Norrath has its own unique language, and with a little practice you can learn them all.

What is the best way to develop your different language skills? Which languages are the most and least useful to learn? Who should be developing their language skills, and why?

Post your strategies on how to best use the language skills, and read, rate and comment on those posted by others.

languages taught to others (current year/month) ?

In an attempt to train my other toons languages across multiple accounts it may appear this technique no longer works?

Setting a language to learn and spamming tells for a period of time to any PC seems to all be legible and not a foreign language even reading at skill 1 being taught by 100?

Skill level never changes

Maybe language learning is no longer important but I stumbled upon this after acquiring the Flawed Defiant Charm (improves as you master the languages of the common races)

If anyone even reads this thread any longer and has knowledge it would be appreciated to see replys.

thanks

Just last night I taught languages in a group, but not sure you can do it in tells. Of all the years I've played eq, I've only ever done languages in a group setting.

If you still are trying language skill ups: make sure the teacher changes languages (by clicking on the main chat window/language) in the MAIN chat window. Progress will be rapid then. Learner(s) should be in a goup with the teacher.

Are the hidden languages still in the game? If possible I would like to learn them on Saryrn server. I have heard rumors that they may have done away with them completely, is this true? If it is it's a complete waste of the people that had taken the time to max them out. Besides, knowing something that not many other people have a chance to learn kinda makes one elite.

I can confirm that at least one of the 'an unknown tongue' still exists as I was lucky enough to get it a couple years back and taught it to 2 people last night so it is still learnable. If anyone on the seventh hammer has the other unknown tongue or has one and wants to see if mine is different send Skif a tell in game.

Everyone can learn all the languages. Find a friend and have her switch to that language and spam tells to you in it. If she doesn't know the language either, you can spam her back. Eventually you'll both get to 100 skill in the language. Switch to the next language and repeat the process as needed.

Note that higher intelligence helps the process go faster, IIRC.

I think this one originates from stormhammer.

Just send an ingame email to Rosebriar. I will set up a quick meeting and accomadate any schedule. Thanks!

I wanted to determine the language that each race starts with, so I created new characters of each race and noted the languages that each had. All races start with 100 in Common, with the exception of Ogres, Trolls, and Iksar which start a few points shy of 100. All races start with 100 in their racial language. I've left that data out of the below list, except in the case of the Half-Elf and Iksar where there is a tad bit of ambiguity about the racial language. If a race isn't listed, then it doesn't know additional languages beyond Common and it's racial language. Let me know if you notice any errors. Thanks!

Dark Elf: Elvish (54), Elder Elvish (54), Dark Speech (100)
Drakkin: Dragon (100), Elder Dragon (100)
Dwarves: Gnomish (25)
Frogloks: Troll (42)
Gnomes: Dwarvish (54)
Half-Elves: Elvish (100)
High Elves: Dark Elvish (51), Elder Elvish (51)
Iksar: Lizardman (100), Dark Speech (100)
Ogres: Dark Speech (100)
Trolls: Dark Speech (100)
Vah Shir: Erudian (32), Combine (100)

Rogues start with 100 skill in Thieves Cant.

the unknown tongue was confirmed some time ago. it's a holdover from when the languages were revamped. can't recall what language it was, but it wasn't removed with the revamp and thus, only those who knew it, could pass it on. you are one of the lucky few to have it now, congratulations.

i've sought on Stromm for anyone who might have it--especially after the server mergers, was hoping someone from another server brought it with them, but to no avail.

According to what someone on EQplayers said, the "unknown language, originated as human on FV. Since people on FV were allowed to transfer to stormhammer, when they did, it showed up as "an unknown language". They were then able to teach this to others on stormhammer, and once some of them transferred off to regular production servers, the "an unknown language" followed.

Having said that, I've never seen anyone speak it, nor know it. All I have seen are report and screenshots, so, its all hearsay.

If anyone on Quellious has this language, I'd love to learn it.

All you need to do to learn language is go to your trainer and put one point into the language of your choice. R/click chat window where you type and select that language. Then pop your merc and group say something to it. It works best if you put the line or lines on a hot key so you can just click the key over and over. Repeat for all languages.

An unknown language is any language you have no skill in. It is not a seperate language.

If you have a character who has this "unknown language" lets see a screenshot of the skill window.

i'm fairly comfortable there's a 26th lang called "an unknown tongue" based upon the comments of folks across the servers and research i put in when starting my language lessons.

as far as what benefit, if any, the 26th has, i've no idea and it seems to have none for the time being.

if you read through the posts on the Tainted Heartstone, you'll note the same comments from folks on different servers. How the lang got started, when it originated is speculation, but its existence is pretty well grounded.

There is a really good reason for learning all the languages. You can get a charm that will increase stats with every language learned. You also get the satisfaction of having the ability to talk to absolutely anyone, except maybe the drunks, without any problems. When i first started learning languages, i found people to spam me in the languages i had a point in, and in languages that i didn't already have a point in. you don't, i repeat, DO NOT need to have a point in ANY language in order to learn them, just be grouped with someone who knows a language that you don't know and have them spam you. i did not see the languages that were totally new to me on my skills until after i zoned, but after i zoned for one language, all the other new ones showed up without me having to zone. so if you learn a new language that you've never seen before, you might have to zone in order for it to show up in your skills list. but you might not also. just depends. and if you have a point, and you are trying to both learn and teach a language, you just have you and your friend constantly spamming each other until both of you are at 100. it will take longer, but as long as both of you have good int or wis, it's possible. get a bard to group with you, bards get a wis/int increase song higher up, and it will give you some extra wis/int points that will prove valuable when learning that new language or raising that tradeskill. and Bristlebane users, my name is Trystenne, i'm always willing to spam anyone with languages, and i have still have to learn 8 of them (one point in each of them), so i would be willing to teach and be taught at the same time. and i'm a bard, so i have that int/wis song too. send me a tell, usually on during saturday nights.

I know, I know, ask someone who knows the language to teach it to you. That answer is posted here in many places and there is an excellent guide on the Language Skills page. But there must be another way! How did the first player to learn Orcish learn it? Someone learned it first! From a GM? I can't imagine that they would make an "Eldar Dragon" language without some way to learn it in game. A quest?

Just wondering. (I am trying to play the game with as little help from Zam or spoilers as possible.)

Train one point in it at your guildmaster. Then you can spam it to someone til they have 2 points, then they can spam you til you have 3....

You can teach someone else a language to 1 point higher than your current level.

Languages used to have to be known to read the books for Research recipes; usually in elder erudian or combine language or something like that. But now since it's easy to find out what components you need by searching the web, learning languages is more of a roleplaying thing now, or confusing someone with random letters if they dont understand that language! :P

Thank you very much for sharing that. Being a bit of a newb, and a little low on the learning curve, I'm a little perplexed with learning research. Now. I open a book and it's in Old Erudian!? I'll be working on languages. I presume that if I spam and learn the spoken language, I soon be reading text and breezing through Malagil's Compendiums, etc. Any advice or comments will be greatly appreciated. Thank you, --- won't be discouraged
