We use them all the time. Send one out into crowded room of mobs, thru a door, around corners, down the hall, etc, and then TARGET your mark, and have cleric or chanter ASSIST you, then cast paci. Paci casts thru walls and around corners. Repeat until you have only the one you want to pull, and send in someone or a pet, and bring it back to be killed.

Works for more than scouting, if you use them to their potential.

Its not lore no, and it would cost a lot more to recharge a stalking probe than to just buy a new one, true.
That's not the point of tinkered rechargeable items though. They take less space, are reusable with vendor purchased items, and I also wish these were rechargeable. I could carry around a backpack full of bandages for when I solo...or I could use a gauze press and carry a stack of mana batteries with a collapsible tool box, 3 slots for 8000 bandages instead of 10 slots for 200. At some point, money isn't the issue, but space and time wasted hunting down tinkerers in the bazaar to make you a new one every time you run out of charges is.
