The Gnome

race logoThe Gnome starts off in the far city of Ak'Anon on the continent of Faydwer and generally hunts in the Steamfont Mountains during his or her formative years. Gnomes get their own unique trade skill: tinkering. What is the best strategy for playing a Gnome? What zones and cities should you take him to and which ones should you avoid? Which factions should you work on improving, and which factions should you be wary of decreasing? What are the best quests in Ak'Anon for the beginning Gnome? Where are the best shops in Ak'Anon? How should you role play your gnome?

Evil Magician Spells

Does anyone know where a gnome mage that follows Bertoxxulous buys his spells at. I've been forced to make a mule in order to buy my spells as the magician guild will not sell to me and I can not locate the spells in the mines of malfunction.

Well, so far as I know, you can only buy the spells yourself in Neriak, and even that might take some work. If you are willing to suck up, you might work on faction in Freeport or Qeynos, or even Felwithe.

I wanna play a INT caster, which one?
# Mar 01 2001 at 4:14 PM Rating: Default
I wanna be a gnome, and i wanna be an INT caster, however, i dunno which one to be. I don't wanna be a Necro (i already have one, hehe), so that leaves with Mage, Wizard, or Enchanter. I was thinking Wizard cuz of ports and stuff, but im not really sure. Any ideas? im a grouper, but can also solo (as the fact that i have a necro shows hehe), so im cool with anything. Please advise

I think if you like to both solo and group you should probly take a Mage. We can do both hehehe.
Wizzies can't solo
Enchanters can' solo
SOLOING MAGES ROCK!

I would like to pu to death the notion that WIzzies can't solo. I soloed all the way from lvl 1 to lvl 24. I group now simply because soloing got REEEEAAALY boring. Root then nuke works great, but remember to have shadow step and gate memed at all time. Also be sure to be bound in a zone near the one you're fighting in. WHen things get out of hand just cast shadow step, then gate, and you're safely in another zone. At lvl 20 I could even solo things that coned red, although it was extreemly risky and it did die a few times from my over zealous attempts.

Wizzies can solo at lvl 29 with Bonds of force AE snare spell.
RE: I wanna play a INT caster, which one?
# Mar 07 2001 at 4:06 PM Rating: Default
Um, wizzies CAN solo, but only after a long time. if they are twinked, they can solo using root/blast pretty easily, but we can kite (and just about as good as druids) after we get our snare spell (bonds of force) if u have JBoots, it makes it all the more easier. To sum up, if u wanna port and be powerful later in life, be a wizzie. If you wanna be good now, and almost be as good as a wizard your whole life, be a Mage.

What are gnomes like, how do I roleplay one?
RE: How to play?
# Mar 02 2001 at 2:12 PM Rating: Default
I like playing them as somewhat comical.

If you ever see a gnome warrior making a kick attack, or watch an enchanter/mage/wizzie running you'll know what I mean.

Plus the whole tinkering skill, in which you make a lot of strange, worthless, or broken stuff kind of supports my view.

However, don't let anyone else make fun of your gnome, because we also pack a powerful punch in a small package.

Thinking of playing a gnome cleric ? DON'T !!!
.
.
.

.
.
.

Still reading? **sigh**

Ok here is the facts -

Disadvantages? Low wisdom = low mana = trouble. Plus you have low strength. Unless you are twinked with wisdom and strength items it will be tough going. Plus there are NO gnome clerics quests.

Advantages? Ok there are some - dexterity and agility are high which helps some on defense. You have a high intelligence and can learn skills relatively quickly.

Do these outweigh the disadvantages - no. Only a very stubborn person should try this race/class combo.

Still interested? Think you are stubborn enough? Ok - then here is what you can do.

Because of the abundance of skeletons running around Steamfont you can stay in this zone from 1st to 14th level. So when you die a lot (which you will) its not that far to run to retrieve your corpse. 1st - 4th Spider Valley or newbie side of windmills, 5th - 6th kobold camp(s) (but group), 7th - 9th harder side of windmills (but group), 10th - 11th skeletons around dragon skull, 12th - 14th minotaur slavers (but group).

At 14th you get some decent spells - including bind - so you will be in demand and can get bound to the zone you are adventuring in - so leave the Steamfont and venture out into the world - and enjoy the fact that you are one of the VERY RARE gnome clerics - and don't forget to mention it every chance you get!

PS - But get yourself some WIS increasing items ASAP !!!

I couldn't disagree more. I LOVE my 9th/10th/9th/10th level gnomish cleric. And here are some reasons...

1) I always win in a mana recharging race (I don't bother telling the others it's because I have low mana TO recharge.)

2) I can use the bullsmasher..don't help me with cleric things, but oh well...it's a nice weapon.

3) There are a profound lack of healers/binders in Steamfront.

4) I can't wait to see the look on those bad, evil people's faces after I buff Watchman Halv and Heal him. (once I get to be a high level cleric). That is if he can be buffed and healed...
ah well.

Gads, where to start explaining the phenomenon that is Pusbag?

Firstly, he writes some quirky, funny, off-center posts and some people like to read that kind of stuff, so they rate him higher to encourage him to post more.

Secondly, Pusbag DOES post straight, useful information, too, so the above applies again.

Lastly, he roleplays a Troll, both in-game and on these boards. Anyone who has been around boards for a while should recognize the term "troll." Trolls flame, inflame, and incite. That is their role. He plays that role to the hilt, when necessary.

I agree that his humor is not to everybody's taste. Humor being largely based on the discomfiture of others, some are going to be offended. This is just the way it is.

Bottom line is still that which applies to anything you find disagreeable, offensive, or useless to yourself in real life: Don't read his stuff.

Personally, I think his stuff is often pretty wild and will read just to see what he comes up with next.

Filter away, anonymous-boy!

As a NON-anonymous poster I take the risk of placing something on these boards which others, like you, may not find of any interest and quickly find fault with. In truth, much of what I post is editorializing rather than strictly question/answer stuff. I acknowledge this tendency. In my defense, however, I will give a straight answer to any question with which I can help. But really, just how intellectually difficult is it differentiating between a gnome and, say, a dwarf? If you need help trying to decide which class is right for you or "which race has better stats for being a wizzie?" then perhaps re-taking 6th grade is in order for a person of your mental stature.

So which is more valid? Posting a perfectly legitimate question about the origins of the term "gank", asking an inane EQ question which could be self-answered with just a bit of research (this is, after all, the forum for such things), or taking potshots --anonymously, mind you-- at someone who is genuinely curious about PvP-speak? Two of the three choices are acceptable. Unfortunately, your choice is not. I, at least, have the balls to stand up and become a possible target by using my name.

Posting something that you have written and wish to share with others anonymously is not in and of itself an act of cowardice, indeed, friends of mine have frequently posted anonymously on Alla because they forgot to log in or hadn't requested a password. However, to flame someone anonymously shows the writer's "lack of intestinal fortitude" or in plain English, he is just yellow.

As for self-aggrandizement, I have not inflated my own postings, nor would I be able to if I were inclined to do so. The rating system doesn't allow posters to grade their own material.
Heheh, and neither can anonymous-boy for that matter, since an anonymous detractor hides behind his facelessness and forfeits the opportunity to rate the writer.

Now, here is my challenge: get yourself a name, anonymous-boy, and let's get after it. My flames certainly burn a lot hotter than anything you can put into words.

First off, Pusbag, kudos. You can spell, crack a joke, and form a sentence - keep it up! Secondly, the earliest use (I've heard, at least) of "gank" was by NWA in the tune "I Ain't Tha One".

Ganked means getting took for your bank

I recognize I am usually one of the first to jump on the Almighty V for their lack of responsiveness to their paying subscribers, but it appears they have finally got it right, so I am here to eat some crow.

Well done, Verant!

There. That's enough of that. Crow tastes pretty awful, so don't expect a whole lot of that in the future, V.
If you are wondering what it is I am writing about, refer to January 15th opening news on this website. It seems that Verant has revamped the whole experience/grouping thing and is going to implement this in the next patch.

Just thought I'd pass along the good news!

Ok, I'd just like to clarify this once and for all, so you do not have to doubt the advice of others. WHen you kill dark elves, the only faction you lose is INDIGO BROTHERHOOD. There is no hidden faction, or anything stupid like that, so dont believe what newbies say. Now, the indigo brotherhood is and only is the warrior guild in neriak. They are mainly concentraded in the 2nd zone in neriak, commons i believe. They only have one person carrying the faction in foreigns, which is named something like dboln or something, which can be reached at the ogre merchant near the bar, when you take a left from the neriak entrance. He is around level 13 I think, and drops fine steel weapons about 35 percent of the time, so some people choose to hunt him. He can be avoided by going right though. So if you dont plan on venturing to neriak bank, feel free to kill the orcs. I personally dont like to, but there isn't much of a consequence. So I repeat, there is NO FACTION CHANGE WITH THE GUARDS AT ALL. I hope this helps, good luck all.

Anon. person with 3 50+ characters and much high level experience.
RE: Real story on CB orcs
# Apr 05 2001 at 9:12 PM Rating: Default
I think you mistyped your first statement, which led to the topic getting a little skewed.

When you kill Crushbone Orcs, you lose faction with the Indigo Brotherhood, which is the Dark Elven warrior guild.

The guards are on a separate faction. Actually two separate factions: Dread Guard Inner (who patrol the Third Gate and Commons) and Dread Guard Outer (who patrol the Foreign Quarter and Nektalos). Some agnostic races, or other evil races, frequently have a decent faction with the Outer guards and can thus do at least some business in Neriak. The Inner guards are a bit less friendly to outsiders.

Killing a dark elf may or may not adjust your guard factions. Killing a dark elven guard or stone guardian will indeed lower both Dread Guard Inner and Dread Guard outer, in addition to Indigo Brotherhood, and will raise Emerald Warriors (wood elf warriors).

But my main point was that you probably meant to say "Killing Crushbone Orcs does not lower your faction with the Dark Elf guards" and that is a correct statement.

I am Annyhillus. I am proud to be a Gnome and equally proud to be a Wizard.

The logical choice of class for a Gnome is to be a caster, one that using Intelligence, preferrably. I chose to become a Wizard for several reasons:

1. Gnomes are known for their mental prowess, which makes a Gnomish Wizard VERY powerful,

2. Gnomes have the physical adptness to avoid attackers, a must for survival, ESPECIALLY for Wizards because we do not have the health that "meat shields" have,

3. Gnomes are among the best "learners" in all of Norrath, which gives us an advantage at acquiring and developing skills,

4. And, lastly, most other races at least tolerate Gnomes, which makes travelling and adventuring in civilized areas less dangerous. And, this also gives Gnomes greater access to the world's markets.

I hope that the information I have presented will help all up-and-coming Gnomes to choose wisely their career paths.

Now, leave me be, I have much research to do...

They aren't necessarily bad or good, but perhaps not the best choice for a warrior. There are other races with better beginning stats for a warrior. They do make excellent red necs (necromancers) due to their high intelligence, or for that matter any other class that requires large amounts of intel.

As for getting hooked up with a cleric, you won't have any problem, since WARs are always in demand as meat shields for the casters.

Please understand Verant has designed this game to be played with whatever race/class combination that is possible. And that means you cannot make a "real" mistake with any primary stat choices or race/class that you might choose. There are plenty of items out there to boost any stat deficiency that your character might have. So, if you want a gnome warrior, you can have one. And I'm certain you will be successful with him. Simple as that.

I have a level 8 Gnome warrior. I started him on Saturday and after 9 hours I am level 8. I put all bonus points into str and stamina. I really like this charcacter. Although I have twinked him with a full set of banded from age one. (shame on me)The major drawback to this character is his strength, or lack of. With armor on he can only carry about 20 lbs of loot. Tip: use large sewing kits to carry loot in (watch the combine button), they are much lighter than packs. His stats go up amazingly fast. I have been playing since the game was released and have never seen skills advance this fast. Gnomes are fast, smart and just plain fun to adventure with. I don't know how well he will do at higher levels but I intend to find out. Happy trails. :-)

Dont let Pusbag's trollish leanings fool you-gnomes make fine warriors. They maybe the shortest race you can play, but their melee stats are are mid range-better than wood/dark elves.Their high INT is almost unique for a warrior-only dark elves are that high-and this makes a big differance in how fast you learn skills.Pusbag is right though,as long as you put your pts, into the melee stats-STR,STA,AGI and DEX-you'll be okay.I recomend strength, but any combination of the four will work.

I like my gnomes sweet and crunchy, how about you?

Ooooooooh. Sorry. This is for gnomes asking questions, not for trolls telling others about gnome recipes.

Well, if you are so inclined, gnomes are best when marinated for 2 days, then placed on a skewer over a hot flame. Remember to sear both sides to hold in the juices, then slowly roast for around 2 minutes per pound. It tastes great when this is done while they are alive. Place some fresh vegetables on a semi-large bun and dig in!

SHORTY CLAN

Hey all you shorty dwarves, halflings, and gnomes.
Im here to create a clan only for the three races that are of the proper size. None of them fat ogres n' pretty boy elbzies. I wanna make a clan solely of the three shorty races, whos name is yet to be decided. No strict requirements, any class/level. Basically we can just ***** around and then set up *****-around events where we can all like meet in one zone and bug dumb elbs or trolls er' sumthin. Itll be a good time I promise.
Oh yeah, another thing, this clan will be on prexus, other servers. Im not big with e-mail....so just meet me in game...send a tell to Sizebig. Hope to see ya around!

P.S. all 'types' of players will be accepted, from doods to powergamers to RPers. Just be cool :)

# Nov 17 2000 at 11:10 PM Rating: Decent
ATTENTION GNOMES! The time has come to begin pushing towards the greatering of the, (at least for right now) least useful trade skill, tinkering. Yes, it is time to renew our abilities in tinkering, and show that the true route to greatness is right through Ak'anon. So, because of these conditions, it has been decided to begin a tinkering guild to further our research and break down the barriers of what is the now limited abilities of tinkering. However, we gnomes will, as usual, not go straight for the throat of this problem, but show our support of Norrath through raffles, special events, and tinkering workshops for those gnewbie gnomes. To join, send me a tell online or e-mail me at wgcolgla@earthlink.net, or send a response on this message board. Remember, It's your duty as a gnome to be the best tinkerer you can be! Make Brell proud!

Your Neriak faction
# Nov 14 2000 at 7:21 AM Rating: Default
Most gnomes are not KoS in Neriak (the dark elf city) when they start the game. If you want to get into Neriak, as one of the few races allowed, you should never kill a single Crushbone orc. You will notice that if you do kill a blue orc, one of the factions getting worse is "Crimson guard" (or something like that). That is the Neriak guards faction. Crushbone orcs are allied with Neriak (its the reason Ambassador D'Vinn is there actually...)
You will, to my knowledge, only be allowed into the first quarter of Neriak anyway, but, when you later have to run through Nektulos forest you will be pleased to never have to worry about the guards.
Loot and xp from orcs is good, but the trains and overcrowding doesn't make it worth it. Stay in Steamfont. You'll have plenty to hunt there till level 12 at least.

Just my two coppers
RE: Your Neriak faction
# Apr 05 2001 at 9:19 PM Rating: Default
Killing Crushbone Orcs will lower your faction with the Indigo Brotherhood, which is the dark elf warrior guild.

The Neriak guards are on different factions. The foreign quarter guards (who also patrol the newbie zones) are called Dread Guard Outer, and the guards in the more private part of the city are called Dread Guard Inner.

You don't lose faction with any of the guards when you kill Crushbone Orcs. There still may be some wandering warrior NPCs in town, though, so be wary.
RE: Your Neriak faction
# Dec 09 2000 at 11:44 PM Rating: Default
I have killed tons of orcs in crushbone and am not kos to the neriak guards. I can travel the first quarter of DE city np, but not the foreign part due to the Ogres and Trolls. Killing Crushbone orcs only hurts the DE Militia guards which are in the 2nd and 3rd quarter of DE city and which you are already KOS upon being born to begin with.
RE: Your Neriak faction
# Jan 04 2001 at 10:13 PM Rating: Default
not true, if you happen to be a gnecro you can go almost anywhere in Neriak, even the foreign quarter, just make sure to use invis to undead or the ghouls will be the only thing I found to KoS you.

wrong on the kos from birth.. my gnome mage has made several runs into neriak and shops at the library there, he did aparantly kill 11 crushbone orcs at some point according to my log parser.. not enuff to matter evidently.. worse i've conned to anything i've yet seen in several trips thru neriak was dubios to lots of mpcs and ready to attack to the ghouls gaurding the necro guild.

RE: Blacksmithing
# Nov 07 2000 at 8:25 PM Rating: Decent
Of course Gnomish Rogues can blacksmith! All race/class combos can perform all trade skills, with the exceptions of Poison Making, Alchemy, and Research (and Tinkering, which someone just reminded me about).

The best place to do blacksmithing is in Freeport (assuming you aren't KOS there, which you probably aren't). If you have some money, don't bother putting any points into blacksmithing. It will end up costing you maybe 3 plat more, but it will save you 20 skill points.

Make lots of metal bits to raise your skill up to 21 or so, don't bother with sharpening rusty weapons. After all, you will have to make many many metal bits anyway (unless you want to go the super expensive route of trying banded almost right away).

Check out KC's Blacksmithing Guide, there is a link there from Allakhazam's site so you shouldn't have much trouble fiding it. I used it all the way through and my skill is 175 :)

Just a note, you will end up spending over 1kpp to get your skill to 175. At the higher skill levels it gets pretty expensive.

Good luck with Blacksmithing! :)
RE: Blacksmithing
# Nov 14 2000 at 7:08 AM Rating: Default
For classes that cannot gate Freeport is absolutely the best. However, if you can gate and don't want to leave Ak'Anon, you may want to bind by the forge in Ak'Anon (The one in the Bard area, NOT the Ak'Anon forge, that one is for cultural smithing only). That way you only need to run out to the windmill, fill up with all the ore you can carry and gate back. When you get to make banded Kelethin can be approximately just as good as Freeport (and when you're KoS in FP like me that's good to know).

Very true indeed with one omission. There is a skill that only one race (any class) can do, tinkering. Actually any race can do tinkering, but only Gnomes can advance their skill (get any better at it). We also start with a 50 skill in it.

Unlike most skills, tinkering isn't very profitable and was once considered to be mostly useless. Now that it's been enhanced there are a few things that can be done with tinkering that can lead (usually through quests) to some useful items.

# Dec 16 2000 at 9:24 AM Rating: Default
about the only 'armor' i'd ever consider buying from a merchant for a caster class (especially my gnome mage) woulda been (small) cloth pieces.. the next step is likely to be making your own raw silk armor using some spider silk (not spikerling silk, just spider silk) combined into silk patches, then combine that with the apropriate patterns.. altho some items require 2 silk patches.. tunic and pants i believe.. i'd suggest looking into it on one of the many eq sites out there.. other then that you'll probably be buying your armor off other people or dropped by what you hunt.. easily from orc pawns :)

Before you buy, right click on the item to make sure that it is wearable by your Race and your Class. Gnomes can only wear small items BTW unless they're magical.
Money for newbie gnomes!
# Sep 04 2000 at 2:41 PM Rating: Decent
When you start your itty bitty gnome, you might notice some people killing guards. They have very good loot and most of the guard killers only loot the coins =). Ask them if you can loot the swords and shields and if they say yes loot them until you get about 2-3 hundred pp. Also, the watchmen might have some fine steel and ringmail on them.

Hope this helps

Weel I think it is a bad doing to loot the guards buuuuttt I have looted a guard before and how in the world are you going to get 300pp from looting the guards? They don't drop armor (that i've seen) and the cheapey swords are only worth 1 gp and the sheilds are only sold for 1 pp.

I think that all newbie gnomes who profit from the death of their fallen comrade should look at themselves and frown.
GO OUT INTO STEAMFRONT AND MAKE U"R OWN MONEY FROM LOOT.

Guards are there for a formidable purpose let them be, cause when u'r geting beaten upon by hordes of spiderlings and you go running to your prescious guard and fing his corpse staring back up at you. You should have thought more deeply about looting your saviours.

The best way to EARN money for a young Gnome is to hunt the skeles. The bone chips they drop are not only useful for various quests, but higher lvl characters who need them for components will pay a few plat per stack to a newbie rather than take the time to gather them themselves.

Ah, but what proud gnome would coldhandedly profit from the death of his fellow Watchmen in such a manner? The gnomes should be outraged that the other races of the world visit Steamfont only to hunt them down like vicious dogs, and even more outraged at the gnomish profiteers ninjalooting from his fallen comrades.

Furthermore, since the increase in overall guard power, this tactic is used much less now these days.

(Quick rant: Verant made the wrong decision in increasing guard strength. They should have just made them drop no loot, like merchants. No one would bother killing guards then.)

RE: Money for newbie gnomes!

Waiting for someone to kill the guards is kind of a sorry strategy to make money. Yes I believe you should loot the corpses if no one else is, but the next time you get in trouble and run to your fellow gnome guard for help and his corpse is decaying on the ground causing you to be slaughtered ; you can look at that loot in your inventory and think of how silly it was to condone killing guards. Also you cannot count on people killing the guards so my strategy is to sell full stacks of stackable items, and kill every monster with coin loot. It is also best to concentrate on the same monsters so that you have a better chance of getting the same stackable items. As you get to higher lvls before 20 you can make much more money at camps and killing willowwisps in Antonica. So don't get upset if you are not a newbie millionaire. You don't want to be another cheater!

Let me see if I get this right. I wander by and happen upon the fresh corpse of our city's valiant guardians ripening in the noon-day sun. You expect me, a Rogue of limited means, to weep & beat my breast over my fallen brother...and then to leave all that lovely loot to lie about & be picked up by some wandering Orc; a rogue cleaner; or to just lie & rust in the morning dew?

Thats just not going to happen, my brother.

If Bristlebane provides, I am sure not going to deny his gift.
