The Dark Elf

race logoThe Dark Elf starts off in the City of Neriak and generally hunts in Nektulos Forest during his or her formative years. Dark Elves are an evil race, and are killed on site in most places in Norrath. What is the best strategy for playing a Dark Elf? What zones and cities should you take him to and which ones should you avoid? Which factions should you work on improving, and which factions should you be wary of decreasing? Is there a way to develop enough faction to be accepted in the good cities? What are the best quests in Neriak for the beginning Dark Elf? Where are the best shops in Neriak? How should you role play your dark elf?

Post your strategies on how to best play a Dark Elf, and read, rate and comment on those posted by others.

All are weak save the Dark elf shadow knight, many of the goodie coward race/classes like to throw thier fattened up "Im the avatar" ego at you, this makes pulling thier hearts from thier worthless bodies much easier.

No big differance.

DaEl look better and are a more close nit and larger community, but gnomes have tinkering but dark elves have cultural imbued armor but gnomes have...

1.) can a DaEl Cleric go to the dwarf city in Velius? The Coldain one i believe, off of the great divide isn't it? Just curius what my starting faction with them is. They have the velious cleric quest armor and i need to know if i can start up getting it now that i loaded velious, or will i be KoS

2.) Someone else write to EQAtlas with me and tell them to get a map of the ToFS up! That place is awesome! first floor alone i solo'd for an hour or two at 36 and made HELLA loot. At least 200-400pp worth. Don't even WANT to know how much i could drag in had i brought a tank or two along...

Hey, I have seen ALOT of postings on DE SK's, some on DE Warriors and some on DE Necros. However, I have not seen a single post about DE wizards!! I am about to embark on playing one on the new Sullon Zek server (first time playing a wizard heh) and would like to know some experiences from other DE wizards if there are any out there. From the stat point of view, they look like they are the second best wizards in the game! Only Erudites have them beat, because DE's are even more intelligent than High Elf Wizards. The ONLY downside I can see is horrible faction. So what do you guys think of this combo? Good? Bad? Indifferent?

Why play a Dark Elf ? Admit it, it's all about the graphic, Dark Elf graphics rock :o)

On a more serious note, the major challenges and benefits from being a Dark Elf come from faction.

Personally, I never bothered about faction on Antonica (with the exception of improving my PriestsofLife faction to get my Aegis of Life... people playing classes other than clerics might need to adjust other factions for different quests). I have not regretted this decision.

On Kunark, you have the challenge of building and maintaining your VenrilSathir faction.

It is important to build VenrilSathir faction as much as possible because the Overthere is the only real option to bank and shop on Kunark. Look up the war braid quest under VenrilSathir faction on this site. I strongly advise doing this quest until your Overthere faction is amiable, and then giving jades to the skeleton foreman in the Overthere to get your Worker's Sledgemallet... one of the most useful items I carry.

Fighting in Karnors Castle will damage your VenrilSathir faction. I advise AVOIDING the temptation to fight there... after all, there are other places to level.

Fighting in Charasis is far more damaging to your VenrilSathir faction than Karnors. Stay there for any time at all, and you will be KOS.

Aside from this advice, learn to /con the guards and townsfolk when entering a new place, don't do anything stupid (like accidentally aggroing Bandl McMarrin on your way to a Vox raid when you are still bound in Nektulos... not that *I* would ever have made a mistake like that, you understand *cough*), and you will not have a problem.

RE: Class?
# Jul 03 2001 at 3:55 PM Rating: Default
Magician. With the new 'safe till 6' rule by the time folks can jump you you've already got an ******* of pets to draw on.

Earth/Air tend to be your best two in PvP, as most player enemies are casters (lots of SK's, Necro's, etc. on PvP) so air distracts them, and if your running/soloing and someone tougher jumps you earth can jump in and root them allowing you time to flee to safety.

If your grouped go with Water or Fire. Water is usually better because the Fire's big trick, it's reflex damage shield, won't work often since it's unlikely the creature will have highest agg on it if your in a decent group with at least an okay warrior/sk/paladin.
RE: Class?
# Jul 01 2001 at 4:37 PM Rating: Default
Being that you are in a pvp server, SK would probably be your best bet, since they are the dopest class on earth(even though it is a gay DE).If you realize that dark elves suck as quick as i did, do yourself a favor and make a human SK, they are way better than DElves.
Umm...
# Jul 03 2001 at 12:12 AM Rating: Decent
A DE Shadow Knight is way cooler than a human... humans are useless except for faction and monks... other than that... there is no point in being one. And why be a human monk when you could be an Iksar monk with nat. regen and be cooler looking. Anyhoo, don't listen to him, DE's are better as Necros, but on a pvp you should be a Shadow Knight!
RE: Umm...
# Jul 04 2001 at 6:57 PM Rating: Default
Just for the record, Dark Elves make the coolest looking SK's (boy do i hate admitting that being my main character is a human SK)
RE: Umm...
# Jul 04 2001 at 6:55 PM Rating: Default
wow, gotta love the overwhelming strength that the dark elves have over humans, with their 10 less strength they sure as heck can tank any which way they please. Actually, only Erudites make worse SKs than DElves. Maybe you dont understand what 3/4 warrior is. SKs dont need intellect half as much as they need str. Only a gay Erudite SK will you see sitting back trying to be a caster, because SKs arent meant to be casters, the casting side of the SK is mainly for loosening up your enemy before you draw your sword and move in.
Also, please dont say that Iksar monks are better, look at the facts bro,Humans hit faster and harder. Yes, i will admit that regen is a very good add-on, that is why id pick an Iksar Warrior over a human warrior anyday, but not monk, maybe you are one of those **** that are in love with Iksars and will never admit that the only thing they are good for are SKs and Warriors.
BTW: You were right about DE's being better Necros, actually, MUCH better necros than humans, only Erudites surpass them in intellect, but, nevertheless Id still be a DE cuz they look dope.
Anyways, hopefully you start a SK before you open your floppin mouth again, cuz if you said DE SK's are better than humans in a human forum, youd get laughed at hard.

I am a lvl 47 (soon enough) Delf Cleric. I also have a lvl 16 Delf Nec. As I can remember, at 6 you are probably good to fight in a group at the ruins in EC, but the Orc camps are too high. If you can't get a group at the ruins, try the Monolith in the forest. Experience is not the best but it is fast enough to get you from 6 to 7. At 7 I could get into Orc groups, as well as solo critters near the tunnel or zone to Nekulos.

And the good thing about EC is that you are just not far from your bind point (assuming you are boudn outside our wonderful city). Unless you walk REALLY slowly, your body will not decompose and you won't lose your goods.

That's my experience at least, take it or leave it.

Okay, I'm something of an EQ linguist (i speak about 18-19 languages now, most at 'excellant'), but recently came across a glitch.

One of the only languages i actually spent points on was elder Tier'Dal, because i thought it was like the ancient tongue of our people. Now i see it's also denoted as being the language of Kobolds...

So what is it? Is it the ancient form of Teir'Dal, we just happen to be the ones who taught them and they still speak it while we've moved on to (normal) Tier Dal, or is it their language with just a weird name in relation to ours?

PLEASE help me if you know about this. I've already dumped 8 points into it over the levels, and i'd hate to find out my attempt at being a master of our heritage so i could teach others was just me learning the language of a race of dog men IF it has no connection to our past.

Well, I am kinda new too, but what I think u should do is gain a few lvls, best tostart at 3 or 4, then invest a few practice points in tailoring, then buy a sewing kit, then go out and hunt spiderlings in the Nektoulous forest, this should get u exp and spiderling silk, put two spiderling silks in the sewing kit and combine them to make silk threads which are stackable, but most importantly gain u lvls in tailoring. When you are satisfied with your tailoring skill (should be at least up to 10) sell all stacks of thread, (u don't have to hunt non-stop) and buy a backpack. Don't black wolfs annoy u? Then go out and start killing them, and gather ALL ruined wolf pelts (must be ruined) and go to the Neriak Foreign Quarter. There try to find the place with trolls and ogres all over, and find the shop directly to the side of the two ogresses. It has two female trolls that should sell sewing patterns, combine a sewing pattern and a ruined wolf pelt to make what ever the pattern was supposed to be of, then, (if u failed, keep trying) put it on you and it helps u fight, kinda use it as armor, then if you have remaining wolf pelts, use them to make more clothes, (tunics, boots, gorgets, etc.) and sell it to the merchant, which will make you some extra cash. Hope this helps. tryed to make it detailed.

RE: DE SK
# Jun 14 2001 at 2:58 PM Rating: Good
Okay. My credentials for saying this is three fold...

1.) i've spent a whole lot of hours guarding lowbies at the newbie log (we clerics do stuff like that)

2.) I solo'd my cleric on a dare from levels 1-9 in the Nek, and again from 14-19 in Lavastorm(that just because i'm ballsy like that) so i know my soloing shiznit

3.) i'm a master smith and in the high 70/80's with all other skills. Well, and Alchohal Tolerance 107 :)

Now to start out you need to be able to find the newbie log in nek forest. Leaving the city into the forest, when you leave the cave go at a 45 degree angle to your right and you'll hit a road, follow it on the left side until you see a log there with a bunch of folks sitting on it off to your left (it's also the first log you'll come to if you follow the directions right). It's approximate loc with the zone /loc key is...

400 on the east/west and 1800 or so north/south

Now what you should fight...
Levels 1-2 hit the decaying skele's (alot of competition), black wolves, and moss snakes.

3-4 throw in fire beatles and spiderlings (if you sure you have them at less then 2-3 around. you don't want a whole posse of them and they love grouping on you)

As soon as you get a few gold buy yourself two large bags. Weight/Capacity they're very good and Str is a concern to DaEl's (untwinked ones anyway), and they'll let you store more loot so you can stay in the field longer.

now from 5-6 try going on the right side of the road the newbie log is by. there try and fight normal skeletons that con black or lower to you (rare to find, most are higher), and shadow wolves and black bears. at 6 tree snakes are good too.

At this point you should have a good feel for the game and can discover the rest of hunting and adventuring in game.

Now as for skills. Tailoring is a poor skill for dark elves. Yes the low levels are ok to make yourself some patchwork (a few silver for pattern and a ruined wolf pelt which you get in abundance are a good deal) but post you being level 5 you can buy better off other people making it for you and save the time. If you choose not to work it at all going rate on patchwork armor is around 8 silver to 1.2 gold per peice to buy. only bother buying the tunic, leggins, boots, and sleeves if you go this route. save your money for banded later.

If you REALLY want to go into a trade skill as a DaEl 3 choices... Jewelry if your an enchanter, Smithing or Pottery otherwise. Our cultural armor and items are smithing based, and when they get the pottery idols fixed they'll drag you in some nice money. Brewing is also an alternative, because guilds like it, and you can help make ingrediants for other skills. Tailoing is just not efficient. I assure you, some halfling or wood elf in east commons is better at it then you and making/selling what your making/selling for cheaper.

On that note smithing is HARD... it is lengthy, boring, and expensive as most the ingrediants to do it cheaply/efficently require a second EQ account and character in freeport to aid you. Plus the stuff you can make at any given level is rarely better then the stuff you can quest for. Pottery may be the wiser way to go here (although i worked my pottery elsewhere, not sure what the ingrediants in neriak are like).

For good money KEEP your bonechips off skele's at low levels and auction for 1-2pp per stack (depends on your server, start at 2, it's the common price). By the time you hit 5 (when decaying skele's aren't worht your time) your fighting skele's soon (which become worthless around 10 for xp)... so if you go from levels 1-10 in the nek forest you can easily accumulate 4-8 stacks worth in your time there just fighting for xp... and that converts into enough plat to buy you a decent piece of armor or forged weapon (magic if you can find a velium one for cheap)

Think thats about all. My advice is only for those wanting to maximize their character while staying close to home, and i didn't list things exactly as i did but based a large part on what i saw others do, since my own experiance while working is not the sole sum of the EQ strategy's so i tried to mention above some stuff i watched others do in my tour of duty guarding newbies. Obviously if you have more experiance with the game you know better places to go (orc groups) and if you want the roleplaying experiance pick whatever skill suits you (jewelry as non-enchanter, tailoring, etc).

Either way play and have fun and good luck.
