The Erudite

race logoThe Erudite starts off in either Erudin or Paineel on the Continent of Odus. In either city, Tox forest is available as a newbie hunting ground. What is the best strategy for playing a good Erudite? What is the best strategy for playing an evil Heretic Erudite? What zones and cities should you take him to and which ones should you avoid? Which factions should you work on improving, and which factions should you be wary of decreasing? Is there a way to develop anough faction to be accepted in the good cities? What are the best quests in Erudin or Paineel for the beginning Erudite? Where are the best shops? How should you role play your Erudite?

Post your strategies on how to best play a Erudite, and read, rate and comment on those posted by others.

Ok, so you got yourself a ring of Rodcet Nife. Now what. Head to the bank. When you get there cash in your change (I ended up with a few plat after doing this quest, not to mention I also gained almost 4 lvls) and go to your guild. This is right next door for Int casters. After you train, jump in the pond near the bank and swim into the catacombs. The point that you come up at is the Cubert spawn. Run around here killing everything that is blue to you. Its generaly a fairly steady supply. You should soon reach lvl 4 if you arent already. Now that you are buy more spells, get med, and whatever else you feel you need to do. Now go back after cubes. The lvl range for these cubes seems to be 4-6 or so. Cubert himself seems to be around lvl 5. Although you might die a few times doing this, you will also succeed a few, and most likely lvl a couple of times. When you kill Cubert, sometimes he drops the dress that you need to give to Zamel? Anyhow, he is an NPC right at the top of the pond. Sometimes, he will reward you with a +3 int earing. This is not lore BTW, so you can get 2 of them for yourself.

Now you could continue to sit here and kill him for days on end as I have seen some do, but I myself feel, that people should move on as soon as they no longer get XP from something. But thats just my opinion on camping.

OK, since alot of you do not want to remain in Odus or Western Antonica I'll give you a few hints as to how to get to Freeport for free, without groveling before a non-Erudite. First get nekkid. This is very important since your chances of dieing are high. Now hop on the boat to Qeynos. Once you get to Qeynos look for a druid if possible. A shaman will do, but the camo of druids is very much a nice touch. Explain your plight and they will gladly burn the mana to help you out. Now run. When you enter WK cut south towards the water, and run some more. In north karana you continue to follow the water all the way to the stone bridge. Take a quick look around when you get to the bridge, if you see any druids see if you cant get your SoW and reapplied. Other wise dont sweat it, my SoWs will usually last till I get to Lake Rathe. Once in Lake Rathe, if you want to be cautious get bound in arena. Otherwise, head up the wall to the left and run on across to the Lake itself. Now head east till you see a big area of shore with 2 hills. One hill has Ogres, the other has bandits (run between them). This is where you enter into Rathe Mountains. Again, get SoW and camo reapplied. Usually there will be atleast one group hunting cyclops or giant skelies here. *IMPORTANT-get a map for this zone, or familarize yourself with this area* Now run some more. Most the mobs here are gleaming red to you and will kill you in one hit, but its usally so heavily hunted that not much will notice you. In Feerot stick to the southern half of the zone. The bouncers are KoS to you, but nothing else will bother you. Into Innothule swamp. Follow the wall on your left and avoid the troll guards who are also KoS to you. Now that you are in S Ro, again follow the wall on the left. If you have been moving quick, your SoW should still be on. Keep running and dont stop to look at anything. If you make zone you are pretty much home free. In Oasis cut a NE from the zone towards the docks. follow the shore to N Ro, and then on to Free port. Get bound there even if you are planning on continuing on to Faydwer (last time I attempted this I had a boat glitch and had to start over from arena). Although you can go through Highpass, I have found that i get lost much more often there and I also hate waiting at Kithicor for daybreak. The total time for the trip is about 45 minutes to an hour, and in about 20 or so trips below lvl 5 I have only died once (and that was seemingly unavoidable due to falling off the boat during a lag spike).

Good luck and keep the wind at your back.
My journey to Freeport
# Aug 31 2000 at 10:18 PM Rating: Decent
In the last month I have completed this long journey.

After many victories against the foul Gnolls of Blackburrow, I felt the urge to travel and explore this continet of Antonica.

So one morning I packed my things, took up my sword and strode north from the Gates of Qeynos. From there I tarvelled through the Qeynos Hills and past the guard tower into the plains named after the God Karana. I followed the road east, and when it reached its southermost point I left the road and journeyed cross country towards the river. that night I had the pleasure of sharing a farm meal with some of the farmers of the Karana's (although I think that they were somewhat nervous with me around and were glad to see me go).

As I had heard rumours of powerful undead beasts and powerful bandit lords, I decided to stay near the river and after many hours of travel I reached the stone bridge astriding the river between North and South Karana.

After consulting withe Guards of Qeynos on that structure I gathered some supplies and continued to follow the river east and north until I reached a wooden bridge across the river.

On crossing I headed north towards the mythical ramp towards Highpass Hold. Enroute I was suddenly ambushed by a gnoll, and seeing myself overmatched I prepared myself for death. But, Quellious being my saviour, I was rescued by the wandering Knight Sir Morgan who quickly dispatched the beast.

All night I travelled, not willing to syop up the mountain and eventually reached Highpass Hold. The people's of Highpass had not seen many Erudites in their midst so my welcome was less than enthusiastic. Stopping only breifly I left Highpass and ventured into the Kithicor Forest.

Keeping to the edges of the forest, due to its fearsomne reputation, I arrived in Rivervale. After aiding the fine people's of that place for some time in fighting the Runnyeye Goblins, I journeyed further on.

Again skirting the edges of the Kithicor forest, I eventually came to the Commonlands. Passing quickly through these lands, for I had heard rumours of fearsome creatures called Hill Giants, I eventually came to the City of Freeport and passed through its gates.

There I was accepted in residence into the Hall of Truth, and there I will remain for a while, aiding the people's of North Freeport against the orcish menance in the Commonlands and beyond!

Qeynos to Freeport in Just one SOW

Note: You need invis to make this work, so usually level 8.
Step one - Go to EQ Atlas, get the maps for the ones I mention.
Step two. Get to the gates of Qeynos. Acquire a SOW.
Step three. Invis and run like the wind. Reinvis as necessary. If some undead thing sees throughyour invis and hits you just keep running - you are fast, you will win that race.
This is the zone path - North Qeynos, Qeynos HIlls, West Karanas, North Karanas, East Karanas, Highpass, Kithicor, West Commonslands, East Commonlands, West Freeport. All of the zones are VERY easy to navigate, usually running in a straight line or along the water, except Highpass. Even with a map Highpass is only rapidly passable with experience. If you get tied up here, left click your SOW and get it reapplied, because you dont want to lose your SOW in Kithicor. You can actually get from the gates of Qeynos to the Gates of Freeport in ONE SOW. It is also a shorter trip than the one mentioned in the above post. Enjoy.

And for Thule's sake, stick to the top of the left side of the zone wall in Kith.

Acutually, the fastest way is while in EK zone to Beholders Mave, Misty, Revervale and then Kith forest. Thats fatser than running up the ramp to HH and easier to navigate. Also don't run through Kith forest at nite, there are lvl 40+ undead between 8pm to 8am and if you try to make it through you *WILL* die.

One thing. Although these other options are good possibilities, evil Erudites may have troubles getting through the halfing town. I have yet to try this prior to killing any halflings, so if anyone knows for sure please post it. You also have the problem of Kithicor. If you get there at say 8 pm, you are stuck waiting for 30 minutes or so. This is one thing which in my original message I said I was avoiding.

Just a few thoughts.

Not only has running this route so many times shown me that it can be done in one SOW, I have also learned this - it doesn't matter what time it is. I would say that 80% of my Kith runs have been at night, and I have NEVER been aggroed by the undead mobs. Now I DO keep my evil self stuck up on the very edge of the zone, but that doesnt slow me down enough to make the SOW run out. Also, I use invis to undead, which I am sure make the trip through Kith easier. I think that all Erudites get that spell, as I know that clerics/paladin and necro/SK get it. So, all the 'evil' (I prefer to say misunderstood) Erudites get it, and should use it. And yes, I am KOS to halflings, and I've never swatted one of the little buggers. Only a matter of time, though...

Im posting this here in hopes that no non Erudites will be reading it (Yeah, im stuck up...read my Role playing post). BTW-This is primarily just for Int casters, and im sorry Necros and SKs are excluded too. OK, run around killing decaying skelies for your first few lvls. Keep doing this till you have almost a backpack full. Now head to S Qeynos. There is a guy in the Temple of Thunder, I think Welton Something or Other. Tell him "I will crush the undead." Now do as he says (fill the box with 6 bonechips, unstacked, and combine; hand him back the box and then repeat) After a while (about 10 cycles or so) you will be warmly to him. Now run to N Qeynos. Go to the temple of life and /con anyone in there. If they are amiable you are good to go, if not go do more bonechips. Now get a friend to start a newbie SK (HT does wonders against lvl 1 mobs). Have him come to the pond, go ahead and buff him if you have any buffs, then have him jump into the pond and start killing Koalindl fish. Be careful to not help him in anyway, or you will loose faction too. Also, watchout for Enric (not sure on spelling). After he kills a fish with a Koalindl fish corpse on it, jump in and loot it. Give this to Enric. He will give you gold, and one of 2 items. Either prayer beads (lore item, 2 charges of a 70-80 hp heal) or a Band of Rodcet Nife (lore, no drop item, which is finger slot, +3 int, +10 mana.) By far this is one of the best quests for the item you get.
Paineel and cold, hard cash.
# Aug 22 2000 at 10:42 PM Rating: Decent
Starting in Paineel is one of the best things I have ever seen done for cash. When leaving the newbie gardens I had a magic weapon, 5 plat in the bank, a staff (not cracked, the real ones), and 22 stacks of bone chips.

I am not exadurating.

There are 8 to 10 decaying skell spawns every 5 minutes and there are at most 5 people in the zone at any given time. In addition to bones, they also drop weapons and the occasional change.

You do not have to zone to sell your goods to merchants meaning you get to keep your pets while you shop. With splintering clubs, swords, and the occasional cracked staff, you can and will earn a fortune in your first few levels if you play it smart.

Preforming the lost pet quest when it spawns gets a 1hb 35/5 magic weapon. Most magic weapons sell for 10 plat at the very least and this is a serrious boon.

Granted the hunting is slow from 5 to 8, but after that you can run in BB and Everfrost. With invisiblity and invisiblity to undead, you can litteraly travel just about anywhere with impunity.

Hunting gnoll scouts, watches, and sentinals is probably your best bet for experience. If you want still more bones you can use the locate undead spell if a necro and hunt the moving skells that play in the forest.

Anyway, there are many many overlooked aspects of the erudites that I hate to see propogated.

By the way: Agnostic Erudite Wizards and Enchanters con doubious at the gates of Paineel as newbies with no faction hits other than from the robe.

So you decided upon the proud erudite race. Good, we could use more like you. After you alocate your stats and choose a name (class isnt all too important head to the closest newbie zone). For Heretics you got it easy, just up the elevator and to your nicely fenced in newbie zone and start killing. If startin in Erudin head over to Qeynos. The hunting is better, safer, and quicker. Run amock in the newbie zones slaying beetles, and bats, and snakes always taking time to sell when you get a full inventory (never leave anything behind). After a bit buy a backpack, that way you can hold more loot. Repeat till around lvl 5. Now you must leave the newbie zone. *Buy spells as needed lvl 5 for clerics, lvl 4 for int casters* Now head back to Erudin, if in Qeynos; and out to Tox if you are from Paineel. Here you will find a couple kobold camps. Hang out killing kobolds and looting and selling and killing and looting and selling till lvl 8. At 8 get a group of your fellow Erudites together and bum rush the skeletons at Paineel's entrance. After the first or second failed attempt you will figure out the best tactics to take the spawn (watch out for the heretic pet, he will help the other two, and any other skeletons you might be attacking as well). Do this till you hit around lvl 10 or so. Now take your group of hunting partners to Kerra Ridge. Here you will kill the pathetic kerrans which attempt to block your entrance (full party is recomended at 10 though my enchanter was managing to solo the duel spawn without too much dieing). Kill these 2 adding the 2 at the bridge when you feel confident till lvl 15 or 16. Now its time to go to Rathe mountains. Take your group of hunting buddies and maybe grab a wizard pet on the way (wizard's pets often refer to themselves as warriors) promise it wealth and fame and it should happily follow, viewing all in your party amiably. When you arrive in Lake Rathe head on over to arena and bind the tanks. Now head back across the lake to the ogre merchants and bind the casters. Send the wizard pet into Rathe Mountains first and after he has reported back all clear head across yourselves. Once in the mountains follow the wall on your right then your left all the way till you get to the skelie spawn point. *Warning ensure everyone has a magic weapon, you will need one to kill these skelies* Now proceed to wreak havoc upon everything yellow or lower which you come across. You never have to leave Rathe Mountains till lvl 30ish, though my group is just now debating on a clan name.

If you can actually get into the city, and your faction is high enough, you can just get a key from the guards. I did this with my Dark Elf Wizard. And let me tell you, if you think getting faction with Erudin is hard, try getting it up with Paineel.

Heretics are Paineel. It is all of them, Necro, SK, and Cleric. You cant have both unfortunately, not that it would make sense if you did. Although if you start in Paineel you can safely make it to Qeynos, but you may have to get an invis before you go through Erudin. None of the guards in my past xp can see through the spell.

OK since you start near by qeynos and if you put the right points in you can have high INT and CHA too so this is a very good race for Echanters and since they get human illusion right away at lvl 4 they can get the best prices there in Qeynos and Freeport
Erudin Clerics
# Aug 18 2000 at 9:38 AM Rating: Decent
I've just started playing EQ and after researching, took a Erudin Cleric. So far its been quite fun. With the high starting WIS and INT, its been quite easy to learn new skills and also have mana for spells.

The newbie area is ok, but my advice is to group with some other newbies, usually wiz or mages since Erudin is just screaming for those classes with their starting INT, and go hunt mobs. It might take some time, but if you get in trouble, head back to the guards and they will save you.

Oh & when people say its dark there....ITS REALLY DARK. If it starts to get dark, head back to the enterance with the guards cause else if you die, good luck in finding your corpse.

Some people may not share my views on this, but here are my 2 cps worth. We are Erudites, the High Men of Norrath. Centuries ago we left the mainland to escape the ignorance there. If I come across another Erudite, regardless of class, or religion I am over joyed. Even a moment with a fellow evolved one makes me refreshed. I feel that the problem is not Heretics vs Erudin, Its Odus vs the World. The rest of the world are tools to be used till they can be left behind. Although I have a few associates who I might call friends out of the Erudite race, I view these ppl as most would view a family dog. They are good to have around, but need to be kept in there place. And that is about that

Most likely you are an Int caster, if not good for you. The most important advice i can give is leave Odus, go to Qeynos, the newbie zone is much nicer, and you will have less of a problem with the dark. After lvl 4 you can come back for Kobolds, but you will find it much much easier out of Tox till around lvl 8 or 9. At that lvl you can get in a group for the Paineel Miners. At first you may need a group, but at 10, you should be able to solo all 3 of them. The 3rd being the abandoned Heretic Pet.

I agree, Halas has a great newbie zone. Also a number of newbie quests require you to go here. The only downside is getting there, which can be a bit hazardous at lvl 1. But you cant find a more steady supply of Ruined pelts and Spiderling Silk anywhere.

Paineel, home of my first Erudite. As any class which starts here the first 4 lvls should only take 2 hours or so. I wont go into details on character creation. After you hit your guild head out to the Newbie Area of Paineel. Start killing moss snakes, and loot everything. Whenever you get a full inventory run back to town and sell. Unless you are a twink, every copper counts. *Ding* LVL 2 That should have taken about 15-30 minutes. Remember, suicide is a good thing, if OOM, or low health take a swing at a guard, dont waste time sitting on your butt. Now you can move on to bigger and better mobs. Watch the decaying skelies, and kill any that have scimitars, clubs, or staffs. These sell great, for casters its a new spell; for melee types, 2 or so of them is a piece of leather armor. Continue like this for another 30 minutes or so and... *DING* Lvl 3, now for the real fun. Run up to the nearest skelie and hit him on the back of the head...then run, run, run all around the zone...not too close to guards though. When you look behind you you should have 5 or 6 skelies on you. Find a nice place on the wall and start wacking. Dont worry about too bad of mobing though. Only 3 will attack you at a time. But be ready, every skelie who is agroed to you will wait in line to get in there hits. Lvl 3 goes fast, oh save the bone chips and dont waste money on food. The bone chips are good money to high lvls (dont be stupid though, they dont need your bonechips, but you need their money) 2-3pp per stack of 20 is fair. As for food, when ever you are low, just suicide on the guards...full mana, full health, and more food. Around now, you are an hour or so into your heretic and...*DING* lvl 4. Now you can move up to training fire beetles. Necros can go after Noclin's pet for the femur, clerics can go after the undead rats, and you SKs...you get to keep on swinging your sword. Lvl 5 in 2 hours or less...and if you kept everything you got from what you killed and sold it, you should have either 60 pp in the bank, or 60 pp worth of items. At lvl 5 you have to brave Tox to advance at a descent rate. Its dark and gloomy all the time, and you are blind. You can either kill roaming mobs in Tox or head to one of the kobold camps. This wont go nearly as fast but by the end of a 4 hour day you should be lvl 6. Ready to take full fledged skelies.

I am a relatively new Erudite, after playing a Dark Elf wizard I become tired of being one of a thousand inkie wizards running around EQ. If you want something diferent try playing a Erudite. If you want some really different, try a Erudite Cleric, Paladin, or Shadow Knight. The weaknesses of the race are almost as evident as there strengths. First, they are blind. This is devistating at low lvls, not being able to see the fire beetle chewing on your ankles can cause you to die quickly. Also, there physical stats are below average across the board. Wisdom is a bit above average. Inteligence is by far the most obvious benefit. Also faction. If you are agnostic you are only KOS in 3 cities, the ogre, troll, and iksar home cities. Of course religion will be a big player in this as well.

There are a number of quests in Erudin. You can get the gloves of the gatecaller easily by your lvl. You need amiable faction with the Gatecaller guild (magicians). If your faction is a bit low, run out to Tox and kill the Necro who is by the docks near Kerra Ridge. He is about lvl 5-6 so he should be an easy kill. His bones are another quest at the mage guild. Not sure what you need as far as faction to complete that quest.

I do NOT suggest killing this guy at 7 or 8. I was a level 8 enchanter and tried attack him, he wasted my pet and quickly took me out quickly. I went to get my corpse, but it was very dark so I used my half elf enchantment. You probably know where this leads, Elial KOSed me and sent me running for the city. The guards refused to kill him and just as I got next to the zone, he feared me. He also casts dots and various necromancer spells.

Sounds like you had a run of bad luck. Last night just to figure out how I did it, I started a lowbie chanter and got him up to lvl 8 as fast as I could. After that I bought a few spells and went at it.

Step 1) pull with Tashan
Step 2) get hit
Step 3) fear
Step 4) Suffocating Sphere
Step 5) Chaotic feedback
Step 6) Repeat fear and Suffocating Sphere as needed.

I died twice and killed him 20 times before I got bored. Probably wouldnt have died at all but I got my lvls through a few quests, and had only vendor bought equipment. Make sure you have a good pet, and it should be a breeze. Also after you kill him the first time, be sure to watch for him closely, if you can get him before he summons his pet, its even easier.

When you're above level 7 or so, heretics become easy prey. Kill the abandoned heretic pets and the guy by the docks. Take the bones they drop to the master magician or enchanter(I forget which) on the top floor of their guild in the palace, you'll get good faction from killing them and from the quest.
