This quest begins at Chief Kalan in Cobalt Scar (location -330, -1218 on the beach just north by northwest of the druid portal).

It is available at apprehensive faction.

You say, 'Hail, Chief Kalan'

Chief Kalan nods respectfully and says 'Welcome to Siren Bay, strange one. These beaches belong to my people, the Othmir. You are welcome in our villages as long as you do not cause trouble and are willing to either assist the shellfish collectors provide nourishment or aid the warriors defending the beaches.'

You say, 'I will aid the warriors'

Chief Kalan says 'There are many creatures that would prey on my people if it were not for the dedication of our warriors. The Bulthar and Ulthork often invade our territory and prey on our shellfish collectors. They are wasteful creatures and take more than they could possibly eat from the sacred seas.'

You say, 'What ulthork?'

Chief Kalan says 'The Ulthork are walrus people. They are just as territorial and brutish as the Bulthar but are slightly more intelligent. They seem to be jealous of my peoples prosperity and occasionally lead raiding parties onto our beaches. Our craftsman use the tusks of the slain Ulthork to carve ivory totems of praise to the ocean lord. I will gladly barter for no less than four Ulthork tusks.'

Upon handing in the tusks:

Chief Kalan says 'I will barter for no less than four pairs of Ulthork tusks.'
Chief Kalan says 'I will barter for no less than four pairs of Ulthork tusks.'
Chief Kalan says 'I will barter for no less than four pairs of Ulthork tusks.'
Chief Kalan says 'Many thanks to you strange one. Our craftsman will be pleased, they have been in need of a new bundle of ivory.'

Your faction standing with Othmir got better.
Your faction standing with Ulthork got worse.
You gain experience!!

For your efforts, you'll receive a random gem or trinket.

#Anonymous, Posted: Mar 21 2001 at 5:21 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) first of all, the tusks dont drop very often, 2nd of all its a random(rare)chance of getting the blue diamonds that everyone seems to want. for all you high lvl punks that have been farming these things you coulda spent that time elsewhere and gained xp and far more cash camping other items. then you would be able to buy your precious blue diamonds.
RE: Give it up, quest isn't worth your time
# Feb 12 2002 at 9:51 AM Rating: Decent
it will only be a matter of time till your a high lvl and realize how precious blue diamonds are. blue diamonds = resist gear = very much needed and required to join high lvl guilds for raids =P so shut yer mouth dumb n00b
What faction is needed to do this quest?

you will start out with them as indifferent. But be aware that "most" start out to the wyverns and drakes in the area as KOS. You will remain indi. or higher with the othimir (sp) unless you kill them for exp or drops. )

so the quest guy is on his own faction and surounding mobs is on dragon faction?
RE: What faction is needed to do this quest?

No, the quest guy has Othmir faction. He is down by the rest of the Othmir NPCs... you just have to get past the Dragon faction wyverns and drakes that are up above, on the cliff.

Just ran this quest 5 times since I just got to CS and had some tusks in bank. Got 1 Blue Diamond, 3 pieces of jewelry that sold for 150pp each, and 1 sulphur. Not bad for such an easy quest.
Newsflash to faction hunters
# Apr 07 2001 at 6:48 PM Rating: Excellent
All you have to do is hit a mob once for the faction hit..that's right, once..You can't imagine the faction improvement you get when you go around doing 1 damage to each and every ulthork someone(group) is fighting.

Also try this: go to some ulthork hunting party and help them hunt, tell them you are hunting for faction and will help them kill ulthorks, all they have to do is let you get 1 damage on each and every ulthork they pull. It's a good deal for you and them. You'll get faction way faster than you ever could alone. Happy hunting.
#Anonymous, Posted: Mar 08 2001 at 3:45 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Believe it or not, but some people actually hunt Ulthorks for experience! That's right. When we kill one, it's not for the chance of getting a tusk, or a piece of armor. It's for us to advance a little bit at a time, so we might someday, like you, be at a higher level.
#Anonymous, Posted: Mar 16 2001 at 8:07 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) hmm? at 53 i get pretty good experience off these man-o-wars.. and you know, after clearing the area of those pesky walruses they spawn pretty quickly, and rather often. Im not tracking any other players in the area (near Kael), I cant understand the hostility.
#Anonymous, Posted: Mar 13 2001 at 6:58 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Just do what any self respecting SK would do in this situation Dooming dark one right out of there quad kite

#Anonymous, Posted: Mar 20 2001 at 12:55 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Believe it or not, at 40 I get crazy exp by quad-kiting these bad boys. My bar actually moves at the end of the **cough** fight. And if they drop a tusk, so much the better. The player ******** about this simply has druid or pet envy.
#Anonymous, Posted: Mar 25 2001 at 9:57 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Me too. I went fast to 44 quad kiting these... and I am just now hearing the tusks were worth something. There seem to be plenty to hunt as well. I'll remember this thread and attitude when you ask for SOWs and Teleports...
#Anonymous, Posted: Mar 09 2001 at 2:20 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Correct me if i am wrong, Farming is a done on named mobs with rare loot. At least I always thought it was. Like ppl in dalnirs who claim they are camping all MOBs on the 2nd floor.

Hmmm Interesting opinion!
I am 41 I have been quad kiting the Ulthorks Since 39...they are about the Best Xp/Loot quad kites at this lvl I have found....so If you see a druid quading them the chances are that he is xping :P
Also There are loads of Ulthorks...I am sure you can share them.
RE: Stupid Farmers
# Mar 08 2001 at 4:19 AM Rating: Decent

Get a life and go hunt something else hehe. There's PLENTY of stuff you can hunt for xp as easy as ulthorks. Seems like you just greedy and wanna keep ulthorks tusks for you and are pissed some other get them easier than you =p
RE: Stupid Farmers
# Mar 11 2001 at 5:35 PM Rating: Decent
Hey... I hunt them and I dont' get any xp for them. You know why? because of the faction hit you get. almost everything you do in velious is faction related so you just gonna have to get used to people killing green stuff to them for the faction hit. You think I like quading around a bunch of green things that give me no xp? HELL NO. it is annoying that there isn't anything that give the same faction hit that is blue.

#Anonymous, Posted: Mar 20 2001 at 12:50 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I was Hunting the Ulthork, and guess what there was this 1 guy, that was kiteing 4 at a time. i was there for 2hrs.. and did not see meany ulthorks hmm ,, until i went running into the area looking for them, then i saw the sucker Kiteing them.and lets not forget i been hunting here for 3weeks and leveled here and i know when kiters are around.i have no problem with it, but when i went after 1 , he came running right near it and took it. and he had rows of mobs dead on the groud... guess what thats why EQ is going place that werren data string into the other zones to keep higher level people from trying to Farm no drop & magics items. ... i hope thay dont but what people do does get noticed by the people at veriant. so a small tip, come on guys think of others. try to keep the quad kiteing down some what. thanks
#Anonymous, Posted: Mar 22 2001 at 4:55 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Shift key broke? Druids can quad kite to make of for other shortcomings in the game, ie. no attainable decent armor until plains (and still not that great). Every class has quest armor at mid levels except Monks and Druids, so keep your envy down plz.
#Anonymous, Posted: Apr 15 2001 at 1:31 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) A druid crying and then speaking of envy? C`mon
My Experience
# Mar 07 2001 at 5:07 PM Rating: Good
Ok here is my 2copper worth.

It is another DF belt type quest, for people who are at a nice high level.

Firstly, make sure what you turn in are actually the correct Ulthork Tusks, and not some that just look the same, like a mamoth tusk (doh! yes i stuffed that little bit and lost three Ulthork tusks - never play while very tired at 3am).

Since i only had four tusks left after that stuff up, i could only do the quest once, and the prize was a ruby crown (which i have not valued yet, but it sounds ok).

From reading the other posts, it is fair to say that the prize is random, but considering the fact you are killing green Ulthorks....I guess the element of 'chance' is worth it.

Happy hunting all.......in Eastern Wastes for the Ulthork (not GD)
# Mar 01 2001 at 4:13 PM Rating: Good
I just recieved a Jacinth, Black Sapphire, and a ruby earring that sold for around 95pp. Not that bad. I also had a friend turn in 30 and didnt get one gem. I think it is random.
RE: Gems
# Mar 06 2001 at 2:02 AM Rating: Decent
Is it possible that what you get as a reward is faction related?
Good for faction or exp but thats about it
# Feb 17 2001 at 12:50 PM Rating: Default
I just turned in 20 tusks and I got all junk gems I ended up selling to vendors because they were nothing anyone would want to buy.
Clearly disappointing based on all your posts getting my hopes up... :(
It was nerfed i'm thinking
# Mar 10 2001 at 11:12 PM Rating: Default

I got a blue diamond first try, a diamond second, lowest I got was a ruby. This was not long after velious was up. The person who told me about it got a blue diamond a couple times.

Couple weeks later I did it like 3 times and got star rose quartzes or less.

RE: It was nerfed i'm thinking
# Mar 20 2001 at 7:41 AM Rating: Default
*sigh* not only was the quest nerfed, it seems like the ulthork tusks rates were nerfed. I spent 2 days killing around 50 ulthork and i havent seen a single one drop yet :(
Careful when you offer
# Feb 11 2001 at 8:47 AM Rating: Good
Careful when you offer on this you DOUBLE CHECK who you are giving it to. At the wrong angle facing the Chief, you end up pointing at a warrior behind him and giving the tusks to him, as he also has 4 acceptance slots. I was sorely disappointed when I discovered this, as you might imagine =(
1 jacinth 3 diamonds
# Feb 08 2001 at 7:28 PM Rating: Decent
we have turned in tusks from ew ilthorks, gotten 3 diamond and 1 jacinth which is used for dwarf armor and it cannot be foraged or bought, diamond sell for about 800/1k pp, not bad i dont think, yes you turn in 4 at a time

RE: 1 jacinth 3 diamonds
# Feb 11 2001 at 6:31 AM Rating: Good
I got 1 diamond, 1 blue diamond and the sulfur out of 3 attempts this hasn't been nerfed yet!
I smell a NERF
# Jan 22 2001 at 8:36 AM Rating: Default
I think this was nerfed. you only need 4tusks to answer other posts, but since last patch - no rare gems -- just crap.

thanks verant -- this looks worthless now.

RE: I smell a NERF
# Jan 29 2001 at 4:15 PM Rating: Good
Bah its not worthless its faction and if you are of the level to be here and do this quest than the Ulthoruks you are killing are green in most cases. What do you want for killing greens? The helm quest in Skyshrine is a faction only quest too.

I just did the quest. Got a black sapphire. Not too shabby )

Is it 4 or 8 tusks?
# Jan 20 2001 at 4:15 AM Rating: Default
Is it 4 tusks or 4 pairs of tusks = 8 tusks?

Thanks in advance
4 Tusks
# Mar 02 2001 at 4:54 PM Rating: Default
How would you trade 8 when there are only 4 slots in the trade window and they arent stackable?
results so far
# Jan 12 2001 at 6:23 AM Rating: Excellent
Done it 2x now, ruby crown (150pp) and crystallized sulfur....hmm.

You recieve +Othmir and -Ulthork faction and exp. The tusks are obtained rarely from the ulthork in EW....sometimes you see them at vendors cause people sell them.
crushed sulfur
# Dec 27 2000 at 9:20 AM Rating: Default
yep. that is what we got. crushed sulfur. sold to vendor for 1pp, 2gold.

gonna try again to see if the gem part is right

I was in Cobalt for about 6 7 hours, I didn't see any Ulthorks. I did kill the Bulthars though. Those gems are alot nicer than the Bulthar quest inwhich i get notta.
Thats cause the ulthorks are not in cobolt, go to the zone w

The funny thing is you can do this quest with cheap tusks you buy on vendors at the bank in the dwarf city.. amazing what people sell there.

Cant buy tusks...
# Jan 10 2001 at 5:26 AM Rating: Decent
Unless they just nerfed it with the 1/9 patch, no vendor in the bank area (or just about any other merchant, checked quite a few) sells these tusks. I assume you were able to buy them because someone else sold them to that vendor.
#Anonymous, Posted: Mar 10 2001 at 11:15 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Which is probably why I said...
RE: Cant buy tusks...
# Jan 27 2001 at 7:30 PM Rating: Default
Yea, Genious.
There is going to be a vendor with an endless supply of them so you can run the quest all day and pack in the Phat L3wt.
OF COURSE it is because someone sold them.

Damn people are stupid asses.

The ulthorks are not in cobalt scar. they reside in the eastern wastes in the south west corner.
