The Coldain Shawl quest begins with Loremaster Borannin in Thurgadin. He's found near the Paladin guild at /way -305,+815.

You say, 'Hail, Loremaster Borannin'

Loremaster Borannin says 'Greetings, _____, please be seated and hear the Grand Historian, he is among the wisest of our people.'

You say, 'I seek to perform duties for the crown.'

Loremaster Borannin says 'Those eager to prove their loyalty to the Dain may do so by completing tasks that I have been commissioned to assign. If you wish to begin your service, return to me with four toes of our enemy, the Kromrif.'

Bring him four Frost Giant Toes (common drop from Kromrif giants). Upon turn-in:

Loremaster Borannin says 'Ahh, well done! On behalf of the Dain I thank you for making a dent in the number of our sworn enemy. Please accept this as a token of our appreciation. It is trivial, I know, but if you are as loyal as you claim to be, it will increase in power over time. It just so happens I have a [task] to further demonstrate your loyalty, ______.'

Your faction standing with Coldain has been adjusted by 10.
Your faction standing with Dain Frostreaver IV has been adjusted by 2.
Your faction standing with Kromzek has been adjusted by -1.
Your faction standing with Kromrif has been adjusted by -5.
You gain experience!!

This leads into the second Coldain Shawl quest : Coldain Shawl #2: Cloth Coldain Prayer Shawl.

WAHOO!!!

I tried to hail him and he ignored me. I conned indifferent to him, so I figured I needed to kill more Giants to get faction (need more heads anyway) and on a whim I handed him the four toes I had gathered.

He gave me the burlap shawl. When I conned him again, he judged me amiably!

Smiley: yippeeI got the 4 toes, turned them into Borodin, received the shawl and now I want to rate the quest. I can't seem to find where to do that. Anyone know?

i turned in 2 toes and got the faction, exp, and shawl, but when i hailed again he asked for 4 toes. guess i ahve to give him 4 to kobve on to the next part
RE: 2 toes
# Sep 29 2002 at 8:43 PM Rating: Excellent
First: The reason you got it with 2 toes is that somebody before you either had already given him 2 or 3 toes. Therefor you received the shawl in a Multiquested manner, even though unintentional.

Second: He requested 4 toes when you hailed him because to start the second shawl you have to ask "What task?" I believe, or something of the sort, rather than simply hailing him.

Hope this helps you start your second shawl, and clears up any confusion for people reading as to how many toes are needed.

I wanted to redo the first 2 parts for the faction, but Loremaster Borannin won't give me the quest again. I am working on the 5th shawl.

so far there r only 8 shawls in game. got mine the other day, and oh so much fun to toy with. its 8ac 8cha 8stam 8wis 8int 8sv fire 8sv cold 8sv poison 8sv disease 8sv magic 50hp 50mana, and has an effect that gives 2 extra mana a tic, and adds 15 percent to buff durations. they shawl quests arent very hard. I was able to solo my way to the shell part in the 7th shawl, cuz i couldnt find a seller. other than that, only time ive needed help is when saving the general. get ur skills up and give it a shot. its well worth it

RE: how mcuh faction
# Apr 09 2002 at 8:27 AM Rating: Decent
Don't worry about faction. Just start killing giants, and by the time you get 4 toes (first quest) and 10 heads (second quest), you should have plenty of faction, provided you haven't been killing dwarves for fun and prizes. I started out threatening to the dwarves before starting this quest, and am amiable now.

I never had to worry about faction doing what LUnastaron suggested, but when i finally did get the components I was able to start the quest at indiff faction, the faction for the quest really is no problem
heads...toes
# Mar 31 2002 at 5:23 AM Rating: Decent
a little info here on where to get the heads and toes. I found it much easier to get the heads and toes off of the frost giants in GD than in EW. spent many, many hours charming animals in EW killing giants (which is a lot of fun, considering the downtime is not much...20 minutes fighting...8 sitting. good ratio imo) and only got 2 toes and one head the entire time. of course my luck is bad, so figure that into your plan. Anyways in GD i fought near the EW zone line and killed a few of those giants there, which seemed to be near death after 3 Drifting dead dots (approx 640hp per dot) and got a couple heads and toes rather quickly. i also was able to buy the rest of my heads in GD as people were auctioning them quite a bit. payed 50pp for 4 to one person, and later, when i only needed one more, shelled out 20pp for the last one.

my advice would be bring out your oven spit, plenty of fish and bat wings and bake in your downtime to get that skill > 135 for the next part of the quest. that's about it for now. onto quest #3 for me

Flowing Thought
# Mar 03 2002 at 3:40 PM Rating: Default
I cannot confirm this, but I was told that Flowing Thought I, II, and III stack with each other. If this is true, it makes FT a little more valuable -- although there aren't many items with Flowing Thought III around.

FT1 is not @%*^ clarity

FT1 adds 1 thats right ONE point of mana ever 6 seconds in 1 minute of meditation you get an extra 10 mana back IT IS NOT CLARITY i am just trying to get this message across FT1 is *basically* (not totally) useless, dont expect this to help your down time
RE: FT1 is not @%*^ clarity
# Jul 06 2002 at 8:53 PM Rating: Default
Flowing thought anything is well worth it period, because the wonder of flowing thought is, it's extra mana regen per tick regardless of whether you're sitting down or not, so that's extra mana regen per tick standing up, kiting, walking around or whatever, not just sitting and medding, it may not be clarity granted but it's better then nothing and definatly better then sitting imho. Thx
RE: FT1 is not @%*^ clarity
# Feb 24 2002 at 12:02 AM Rating: Default
Well, now that flowing thought items stack, you can end up with quite a bit of extra mana regeneration. So its not a @%*^ clarity but if you had your head out of your *** you would know that the prayer shawl quest is well worth it.

The 7th shawl (as I'm sure you will discover) has an effect of Flowing Thought which is a jboots version of Clarity.

Book mark this page or you'll be forever looking for each shawl as they are not organized anywhere else that I've seen.

Early suggestions: You'll probably start this at 30 or later. I read through all the shawl quests at 30 and discovered there were things I could do to make the quests easier. Here's a short list:

1. Save Ulthork Meat. I was doing Ulthorks in GD at 30.
2. Save Snow Griffin eggs.
3. Save Tundra Kodiak Meat
4. Work up baking skill; goal is 135
5. Work up pottery skill. 120ish shouldn't cost more than 40p to accomplish, but will take you several hours. I didn't want any failures so I spent an extra 50p and got my skill to 142.
6. Work smithing.

If you do these things in the process of leveling, you'll find the shawl quest very easy. One final comment on pottery - your Int or Wis are not very important to leveling this skill. I did this with Wis over 200 side-by-side with another PC druid who's Wis was 120 (both our Ints were well under 100) and we experienced similar skill bumps. The only difference was I had more successes.
#Anonymous, Posted: Jan 13 2002 at 3:33 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Dex is what determines how fast your skill will go up int or wis just reduces the number of failures so you have to take that into consideration also. Just thought you'd like to know.
RE: Quests in Order
# Jan 16 2002 at 8:47 AM Rating: Default
success is based off your highest stat... skill raising is based off wis/int...
RE: Quests in Order
# Feb 12 2002 at 10:12 AM Rating: Excellent
Actually, the official tradeskill word is:

1) skill up is determined by highest of WIS/INT for all tradeskills

2) minor bonuses on skill up rate for STR in smithing and DEX in fletching ONLY (no secondary skill bonuses for any other tradeskill)

3) success/failure is a based upon SKILL LEVEL versus ITEM TRIVIAL LEVEL ... WIS/INT/STR/DEX/etc. have no impact on success rate

4) some "bonus items" (like the tinkered Geerlok devices) provide a percentage increase to effective skill (providing some improved success rate)

So, max out that WIS or INT and you'll see skills develop quicker in tradeskills. This is more important as you get higher in skill (skillups come quicker at lower skill levels.)

Check out http://www.eqtraders.com to keep abreast of tradeskill stuff.

I don't know if they have made pottery easier, but I skilled up from 1 to 122 tonight in an hour and a half. My first 40 attempts achieved 30 skillups, and it didn't slow down much from there. I only wish every other trade skill would skill up that fast. :)

I was just wondering if i could do these quests over and over like the toes or heads without the shawls just for faction. Are there any quests like that for Coldain faction like bonechips kinda thing with Kaladim. I don't wanna have to do one quest just to turn in some heads and toes. Like can i just get the 10 heads or 4 toes and just turn em in for faction or do i have to get the first shawl first etc? Any help on faction miniquests would be appreciated

My Necro was first killing the giants at 30 in a group with other 30-45 characters; if I'd known about the quest then I'd have collected toes and heads there, but at least it got my faction up to amiable. I first soloed one at 37, but it was tough and if I'd got an add I'd have been dead.

Since 40 I've soloed a few dozen collecting the toes and heads and it's doable but I still got killed one time when I got a wolf add and then a second giant... not enough mana to keep rooting/fearing the wolf and I wanted the XP for the second giant that I'd dotted so didn't just FD and let it kill my pet and run away; big mistake in hindsight.

The first two quests require alot of giant killing. The Frost Giant Scouts in The Great Divide drop heads and toes. Speaking as a melee player who likes to solo, the Frost Giant Scouts were about as tough to solo as a Hill Giant or Sand Giant back in Norrath. Some of the casting classes may note differences in types of resistances, but to sword-swinging paladin they felt about the same. Your solo ability is going to depend alot on your class and equipment. If you are able to solo a Hill Giant or Sand Giant, then come give these guys a try. If you don't mind grouping, there seem to be plenty of people fighting the giants who you could group with at an earlier stage.
RE: When?
# Feb 16 2002 at 11:10 PM Rating: Default
Go to GD, find a giant group, let them know you need toes and heads... if nobody else needs them... you'll have the first and second shawl in no time flat. The third shawl may take some time, you have to go to EW for that.. and those stupid snow griffins never like to pop. I started this quest at lvl 39. :) If you're lvl 35, just be sure to get a good group that won't let you die :D
