At the end of the previous quest, Garadain mentioned hunting.

You say, 'What hunting?'

Garadain Glacierbane says 'My camp here boasts the most proficient hunters in the recorded history of the mighty Coldain empire. We alone could feed an entire clan. Things have been frustratingly [slow] lately, though.'

You say, 'How slow?'

Garadain Glacierbane says 'After years of skinning the hides of the giantmen, my hunting knife has lost its edge. The dull blade has slowed me down considerably. It has served me well, but a new [knife] would make me a much more proficient hunter.'

You say, 'What knife?'

Garadain Glacierbane says 'Hunt a wooly rhino and take his tusk, then take a flawless hide from a walrus. Combine them in a forge with a skinning rock and bring me the new knife and the silver insignia ring.'

Skinning rocks are a random ground spawn throughout the zone. The "tusk" is really a Wooly Rhino Horn (drops from A Wooly Rhino), and the hide is a High Quality Walrus Hide (rare drop from A Walrus). Smith them together in a forge to craft a Coldain Hunting Knife (trivial 41), and give this to Garadain along with your Silver Coldain Insignia Ring.

Garadain Glacierbane says 'Excuse me, ______, aren't you forgetting something?'
Garadain Glacierbane says 'Hrmm, not quite the work of a Coldain. Barely functional, in fact. I'll be needing to touch this up a bit. Fetch me a Coldain [smithing hammer] and I'll be sure to tell my associates in Thurgadin of your deeds.'
Your faction standing with Coldain could not possibly get any better.
Your faction standing with Dain Frostreaver IV got better.
Your faction standing with Kromzek got worse.
Your faction standing with Kromrif could not possibly get any worse.

Be careful.

I have 68 smithing and this combine (Skinning Rock + Wooly Rhino Horn + HQ walrus hide) failed twice on me.
What a waist of time....

Make sure you farm a couple of each if you don't wanna run back and forth.
Not hard to find. Looks like poop on the ground.

Thats where I found mine too. Between sleepers and Icefang. The map pack I downloaded from mapfiend shows a location in the zone for a "Shinning" rock. Its not RIGHT at that point, but just north of it.

I hunted all over this zone and couldnt find any rocks for a long time, then I found 4 in 2 minutes.

They may be a random spawn but all the ones I stumbled upon were between icefang and sleepers

Hope this helps

Skinning rocks are random spawns around the zone...random that they spawn in the same spots each time so I got locs on them and run by them and pick some up easily. Will post locs later.

<sigh> Why didnt I read this thread BEFORE I spent days hunting for a non-existant flawless walrus hide ??? It's High Quality walrud hide that is required, easily looted from the walruses spawning south of Kael entrance. kk ty :)
The TEXT is INCORRECT !!!

It says above you need a flawless walrus hide. As a result of this, i spent a considerable time farming Walrusses and never saw one flawless hide drop. Then i noticed that in the list of components on the left of this page, it says HQ pelt, not flawless. According to EQtraders, you need an hq pelt, NOT a flawless one.

The skinning rocks seem to be found around sleepers tomb and look like a little black rock on the ground. I found 2 right by each other.

#REDACTED, Posted: Sep 21 2002 at 8:46 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) If you want your st00pid knife to be completed, i suggested you get some wis and some str. Strength = smithing. Wisdom = succeding.
RE: Wisdom is key
# Sep 22 2002 at 7:25 PM Rating: Decent
actually you are more than quite wrong

Skill = succeeding
Wis/int = you skills ups
Strenth = your skill ups IF ONLY its higher than your wis/int , this ONLY applies to Smithing. and your wrong again about dexterity on tailoring. Tailoring has NO secondary modifier , VI has put this long time rumor down a very long ago, please stop spreading it around confusing everyone . These are secondary skill checks and only apply to fletching (dexterity) and smithing (strenth)

I already posted on the first ring correcting you, hopefully as i go gathering info on the progessive rings i dont have to stop and post on your misinformation, la k? thx ~

aye, Dex and such do not have an impact....ive tried it out as an enchanter using boon of Garou (plus 100dex) and find no difference. Also verant (as mentioned) has said that it does not effect it...hard to argue with that
RE: Wisdom is key
# Apr 18 2003 at 4:55 PM Rating: Decent
No, Aeoniq is correct.

Your abilities have NOTHING to do with success. They only count for skill ups, and that is it. Success is determined by the raw number of your skill level plus any modifiers you may have (such as a Geerlock).

For all tradeskills except smithing, Wis and Int determine skill ups (whichever is higher). For smithing, Str is also included on that list for skill ups. That is all your ability score does... determine skill ups.

The knife was trivial to make at a skill of 41, however, at 41 I failed twice first. Btw, if you fail you don't get a message that its trivial. Only if you actually succeed at making it do you get it the trivial message if it is.

There is something like a 5% chance you will fail even if its far trivial(like 245 skill) on all skills. I would recommend a skill of 60-100 as the minimum to avoid redoing it like I had to 3 times.

You just negated your own statement. I dont want to start another flame war, but using what you just said, and what I know of skills.... you just negated your own point.

Here is why. no matter WHAT your skill may be you always have a certain % of failure. I think it might even be a bit higher then 5%.

If the Item is trivial at 41 with a 5% chance to fail that gives me a 95% chance to create it.

If I am a 210 (or whatever) blacksmith Id still have a 100% chance to create it, taking away that 5% still only gives me a 95% chance to succeed.

So by your own statement it would not matter. Unless that % of failure lowers after skill 100?

Otherwise you just got VERY unlucky. Mind you im not some master of all. but at 41 thats nearly a 100% for THAT item. i mean assuming it uses like a random 1-41 maybe taking off the 5%....

So I personally would not bother raising my skill to 60-100 ... its only going to roll for a success within 1-41. Im no programmer but that seems to me how a trivial would be done. Id think it would not even bother checking your skill past that items trivial.

No, he's right. He doesn't say that the failure percentage at 41 is 5%; it's a lot more. Failures at trivial are common; as you raise skill the failure rate drops quite quickly. Until fairly recently, though, it didn't go below 5%. Now I think if you have a high skill failures are lower, but his point is still valid.

For components that are as hard to get as these (rare drop / hard to find) you should try for 20 points or so above trivial to have a good chance of succeeding on the first try.

One of the bakery combines on the third shawl trivialed at 10 points below my skill, but I failed twice in a row. That was annoying. Fortunately my souffle came out just right the first time...

# May 21 2003 at 11:56 PM Rating: Default
ive noticed that even when u recieve the "trivial" message the item may not necessarily be a succesful combine 95% of the time. Actually, i have tended to notice that i need about 10 more skill ups before such a ratio is gained

Multi-Questing
# Oct 02 2001 at 1:52 PM Rating: Default
Is there any possible way to multi quest tis ring. Like if someoen where to find the knife and put it into the forge and have someone else put in supplies and combine it all. Would that work? cause my smithing is crap.
RE: Multi-Questing
# May 21 2003 at 12:22 AM Rating: Default
two people cant use one forge at the same time....most items (first 5 rings minus the groundspawn stone) are tradeable anyhow
RE: Multi-Questing
# Oct 18 2001 at 3:53 PM Rating: Default
No need to multiquest this. The only item that is no drop is the skinning rock. Have the smith pick up one of these rocks and give him the other ingredients. The smith combines them in the forge and hands back the knife to you. The knife is not no drop. Raising your smithing skill is really not that hard. Just follow the other tips provided.

I just did this was pretty simple rock on ground warlus hides pretty common rhino horn wasnt bad either. I had a 51 skill and made it and it was trivial. I just got water and ore like someone mentioned made the bits then used bits to make toolbox took maybe 20 pp and hour at most with running was very simple i had 109 Int.
#Anonymous, Posted: Sep 08 2001 at 9:53 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I forged the stone, HQ walrus pelt and rhino horn and got a Coldain Hunting knife. It doesn't say skinning knife....just wondering if I have the right knife to turn in. Since I have to turn in the second ring with the knife...would like to know if I forged the correct knife beforehand...don't really want to redo the first two parts again. Can someone elaborate on the knife name?

What's with the failure rate on this thing?!
I just read a bunch of posts about people saying they succeeded with 34 skill, and that it should be trivial around 45... so I got my skill up to 105 just to be *SURE* ... and FAILED!

You don't get trivial messages of failures
#Anonymous, Posted: May 30 2001 at 5:04 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I tried to smith my knife and failed with 175 skill. Hopefully just really really really crappy luck.
#Anonymous, Posted: May 18 2001 at 7:20 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) go to thurg, buy about 60 water and 120 small chunks of ore. Go to forge place 1 ore 1 ore 1 water combine. Do this till 21 skill "SAVE YOUR METAL BITS" then place 1 metal bit 1 water hit combine till your at 40 skill(you can continue if you want it up higher) with the 40 skill place HQ walraus skin/pelt, rhino tusk/horn, and shiny stone hit combine. This should take about 30 mins to 45 mins to get that high also only about 15 to 20pp. FOR THE DUMB ONES!!! if you run out of metal bits to get to 40 skill just make more =P
