At the end of the previous quest, Garadain mentioned his nephew.

You say, 'What nephew?'

Garadain Glacierbane says 'My nephew, Boridain, keeps running away from home to kill a bothersome [beast], thinking this will prove to all of Thurgadin that he is a great hunter. Every time he does this my sister gets hysterical and I am sent out to find him.'

You say, 'What beast?'

Garadain Glacierbane says 'A rabid tundra kodiak has been feeding on our people for weeks now. If Boridain ever stumbled across the critter I doubt he'd stand a chance. I have a solution, but it would require the [assistance] of an outsider.'

You say, 'I will give assistance.'

Garadain Glacierbane says 'I'm taking a liking to you stranger. Your eagerness to help us will not go unnoticed. Find my nephew and give him this axe. It should keep him from hurting himself. Return to me with the ring and proof that he is safe.'

You receive a Dull Bladed Axe. Take it to his nephew, Boridain Glacierbane, who spawns at -2450, +1550.

You say, 'Hail, Boridain Glacierbane'

Boridain Glacierbane says 'Hello stranger, I am Boridain, master hunter of the Coldain. Glad to meet you.'

Give him the axe.

Boridain Glacierbane says 'Say! This looks just like the axe my uncle uses. With this I can kill the beast for sure! Now please, be very quiet, I must track my prey. I won't return to Thurgadin without the hide of the rabid tundra kodiak!'

You must now follow him around and keep him alive while he hunts for the rabid tundra kodiak. He will go to certain dangerous locations such as the giant fort, the prison camp, and the Ry'gorr fort, before finally encountering the rabid kodiak. You must protect him from any aggressive monsters en route, as well as from any static spawns he finds in these locations. It's useful to duo with someone so one can fight the monsters ahead and one can protect Boridain.

Make sure you are the one to kill the kodiak and not Boridain, or the corpse will disappear. Once you have killed it, loot the Rabid Kodiak Skin and quickly give it to Boridain (he despawns within a minute or so). He will give you a Broken Axe, which you then turn in to Garadain along with your Copper Coldain Insignia Ring ring as proof of having aided his nephew.

Garadain Glacierbane says 'Excuse me, ______, aren't you forgetting something?'
Garadain Glacierbane says 'Well done friend! My nephew is safe at home and his thirst for adventure is quenched for now. The beast will claim no more of our people. I couldn't have handled it better myself. Now I can get back to the business of [hunting].'

So far, easiest part of the quest as I am on step 5 as we speak. Any mobs he encounters along his route are usually solo. Didnt even have a roamer come across our path. He will sometimes lay down for a couple mins for a nap. Dont worry, he will get up and continue along his way.

This part of the quest is definitely bugged in my opinion. (Where you turn in the rabid tundra kodiak pelt to Boridain.) I killed the Kodiak, looted the pelt before the corpse hit the ground, turned around and the dwarf was gone. I've seen other comments here to that effect as well.

You can still finish the quest: wait for Boridain to respawn, get another dull axe from Garadain, give the dull axe to Boridain, then immediately give him the pelt. (This is also mentioned in prior posts here.)

I intend to /bug report this. Obviously the quest is inteded to work otherwise. Apparently this bug has been around at least 3 years so I don't expect them to patch it but worth a shot.

I had the same problem with Tain Hammerfrost despawning even though the FG's hadn't gotten anywhere near him before I killed them all. Plan to /bug report that as well.
Suggestions on Boridain

The first time I did this quest I was killing mobs ahead of Boridain, but sometimes would lose track of him. I found that if you pull the mobs to him, they will aggro you and he will stay by your side assisting during the fight.

Also, if you accidentally attack Boridain, probably the best thing is to just kill him and wait for him to respawn. Once when this happened I tried to lead him to the GD zone and then zone in/out to clear aggro. Of course when I zoned back in he was long gone. The second time I accidentally smacked him (Ok, I'm not so careful with my targeting.) we were in front of the Orc fort and almost finished. I rooted him away from the fort, cleared the orcs near the entrance, rooted Boridain again, camped and re-logged. Fortunately when I came back in he was pathing away from the fort and hadn't aggro'd anything. I was able to finish the quest.

Probably the best thing is to have a partner with you, so that one of you can keep an eye on the little buggar if the other person aggro's him or needs to off-tank a mob.

Just a thought, if you wanted to put in a little extra work to increase your chances, you could go around killing all hostile mobs before giving him the axe. Do that for a while, and eventually the zone should be filled with non-hostiles, keeping mobs that'll kill our little dwarf from spawning.

Kill orcs, giants, wolves, kodiaks, cougars, griffons and dervishes, but not rabbits, Coldain, mammoths and rhinos. That's all assuming they're on the same spawn cycles, of course.

On another note, would it be possible to charm the dwarf so he could be buffed up and given a set of pet gear? Or is that a bad idea?

I just did the 2nd - 6th Ring Quest after gathering everything I needed ahead of time. The first time I had to kill the poor little guy after I hit the attack button instead of the screen shot button, and after I had already pre-cleared the way to the Giant Fort and beyond. doh! This time I just broke out the "Harmony of Nature" and kept Boridian and anything ahead in dreamland. Not a single fight until the end of the walk-about all the way back to the starting point and then the Rabid Kodiak pop's. The RK was pretty easy for my 51 Ranger. Loot skin, give Boridain the skin before he depops and get the "Dull Bladed Axe" back. Ran back to uncle Garadain for the turn in and the Silver ring. Just keep any Ry'gorr and Giant that may cross his path under your spell as well as Boridain so he doesent agro and no problem at all. I used more mana then I needed but didn't want to take any chances.

Did this today after failing it yesterday when I killed dorf by mistake. I thought I perhaps made a stupid mistake and targeted dorf instead of orc, but today with friends I intentionally checked my targeting. This was the outcome: if I engage mob before dorf does, I can kill it with no problems. If dorf engages mob before I do, I can target mob but as soon as I hit the attack key it switches targeting to dorf. Dorf then dies quickly at my hands.

My point? Be very careful if dorf engages mob before you do or you may end up attacking your quest mob by mistake. Best bet is to have your friends kill in a swath in front of the dorf before he can engage the mobs.

FYI: the path is from spawn point to giant fort, to prison, to rygorr fort and back to original starting point.

At each fort you have to kill the (generally 2)gate guards. At prison you kill the orc and giant that are within the partial-square wall where rygorr messanger gets his plans. Rabid kodiac spawns roughly at the original starting point when dorf gets back to it.

A couple clarifications, harmony is the same spell as lull/soothe/pacify but one is target only the other is AE, these are also the same as the bard song commonly called lull (lugubrous lament, etc) and this little dorf has a problem because HE aggros on the giants and other mobs and usually not the other way around (picture your 7yr old nephew taking his level 15 warrior with rusty axe out to EW and jumping every giant he sees, thats Boridain in a nutshell.)

Now on to soloing method...

The main thing you have to worry about is giants, but you also have to look out for ry`gorr orcs and the kodiaks, these are the MoBs that Boridain will aggro and then you also have to watch for mobs that will aggro on you such as ulthorks, snow cougars, wolves, and anything else I missed even though these haven't aggrod him or caused him to aggro that I've seen they can be annoying for you. The second thing to remember is that you need to get in melee range of anything he jumps and do some quick damage right off, it's pretty simple to out aggro this low level guy but you have to basically step up and get in melee range or the giants or whatever will kill him fast.

If you can get a sow then do so, jboots or run3 may work too and I'm not too sure on either because I'm a bard so speed was not a problem for me. Also helps to have spells of some sort preferrably a snare or root and some kind of nuke to do quick damage to out aggro Boridain, I had good luck with charm but most people wanting these rings don't have that option so basically anything that can get aggro off Bor fast. While it's possible to do this with just lull you have to lull not only the MoBs but also Boridain so he doesn't aggro on them which means you run the risk of aggroing either or both.

The trick is to watch and know where he goes, there is the occasional roamer mob that he will aggro and you have to just watch for these and hope you can kill them fast or get to them before he jumps in. The main thing though is the places he paths to, these are in order:

1) The giant fort entrance: the 2 door guards here will have to be dealt with and possibly the captain as he likes to walk out to the gates on occasion,
2) The kromrif camp in the ulthork area up north: there is a short-walled rectangluar ruined building to the south of this encampment with one giant and one ry`gorr these need to be dealt with although the ulthorks are only a problem for you as Boridain doesn't seem to fight with them.
3) The ry`gorr fort: Again the 2 entrance guards here will have to be dealt with along with any roamers and expect them here as you can get many giants wandering by when he walks to and away from here.
4) The last fight is with the Rabid Kodiak who can also be pulled prior to him aggroing Bor you just have to wait for Bor to sit then run East and aggro the kodi first which is recommended anyhow to prevent Bor from even engaging and running the risk of him getting killing blow (and leaving no corpse.)

As far as dealt with, as a 55 Bard (run2/regen3/FT1) I handled the double static spawns by running ahead of Bor and charming one on the other and waited for both to die, as an SK or monk you could just as easily run ahead and aggro them then run them away from Bor's pathing and hold them there with FD until he leaves. With a group or good damage solo class you could just kill these before he gets there. Solo you are highly likely to have Bor die during the kodi fight, this happened twice to me and it feels like wanderers crawl out of the woodwork once you engage the kodi bt it is not a show stopper as long as you kill the kodi and get the pelt.

If Bor dies before you get the Rabid Kodiak to spawn you have to do this whole step over, if you get the Kodi to spawn and then Bor dies then just hold the pelt and do something else till he re-spawns like maybe ring 4 which can also be solod in 2 stages letting Tain die the first time or hunting for drops for other rings; It's even possible to do ring 2 and 4's subquests first using the keywords off a spoiler site like here then going and hunting down the mobs for drops to do ring 1 and 3 between respawn. Anyhow if Bor dies but you get the kodi pelt just wait for respawn and ask Garadain about his nephew again and get a new axe then the instant you turn the axe in to bor and he equips it turn around and give him the kodi pelt too and he gives you the axe and you are done. Ring 4 is the same way, if Tain dies before you kill Ghrek just save the vial and when he's up again say the keyword and then when he lies down hand him the vial before the giants get to him.

ran around for about 30-45min with Boridain, finally he said hes a bad hunter and sat down. soon after the rabid kodiak hit me from behind and i killed him. after looting the pelt i went to hand it in, and i saw Boridain despawn :(
i killed the kodiak quick too i'm a 61 Paladin.

EASILY did it with just a 49 Beastlord and 52 Necro. I probably could have soloed it at 49, didn't use harmony or anything, just killed anything that got near him.

Went through the whole this walkng the little idiot around.. charming, agroing, lulling everything in his path.. we get back to where we started and the kodiak spawns and the little twirp gets the kill shot with a double hit for 100hp ..... No corpse.. ARGGGG..

I havn't seen this method talked about so I will post it.
I play on the FV server in an evil guild, we have no Rangers/Druids. Instead we used the cleric spell Pacify. I did this with just myself a 48 warrior and a 51 cleric. Cleric made sure to Pacify himself first and then Borodain so he would know when it was wearing off. Then just went ahead and Pacified everything in the Dwarfs path. Only once along the way did I have to kill anything and that was because a Ry'Gorr pathed right into Borodain and they actually touched. He was just a green and an easy kill. Someone was doing the giant fort so there were no giants up to worry about, though you can easily pull them to the Dwarf camp nearby and have them taken care of it(we actually did this, and then the server went down for the umpteenth time, when server was back up Borodain was not so we had to wait). I actually went ld just after the little fool finished his nap and was heading to the Ry'Gorr fort. Cleric tells me it got a little ugly then, but he managed to fear away a couple of adds and pacify the rest. When I got back on, he was on top of Borodains hill with the Rabid Kodiak just waiting for me to kill. Could easily solo the Kodiak, he is no tougher than regular Kodiaks (con'ed LB). Of course by the time I had respawned Borodain was gone, so I will do the turn in today. No worries on that.
Anyhow, you do not need a large group to do this quest, nor do you have to use harmony. In fact a Chanter could easily just mez the mobs who come to close and re-mez anything that is able to find you as you are wandering around the zone. Of course it always helps to work with people who are good at what they do, so a special thanks to the cleric who helped me and good luck to anyone else trying to complete this quest.

Well I did this quest last night and found out something that maybe of use to others later. After the silly dwarf wandered to the Giants and to the Jail and finally to Rygorr fort and back to his starting spot with several breaks along the way we killed the Rabid Kodiak without a problem. I quickly snatched the pelt and turned around to see the Dwarf engaging a wandering Orc. Long story short I end up aggroing the Dwarf who is none to happy and won't take the pelt. I tried to camp out and back after a group member rooted him but just as I logged in *POOF*.

Here comes the interesting part: I expected pelt to be trash now but when we got Boridain back I gave him the pelt and *YES*! I got the broken axe back.

I also think that maybe Boridain can be triggered because we lost him to a wolf form Druid 2x before we even got off the hill. The first time we waited 30minues before he spawned. The next time we went and got another axe and he was right back. Also after I botched the quest by aggroing him I got another axe and respawned real quick.

I just finished this quest and I did it myself. For best results I suggest asking a druid to help. Just have your druid Harmony everything that come close to the dwarf and the dwarf too.

I just did this quest tonight, as a 60 warrior i was able to solo it, but not after a few failures. I found that i could easily clear ahead of the dorf and that made it much easier. First i killed the captian and 2 gate guards at the giant fort, then handed in the axe, he pathed to the fort then headed to the jail. When he took a break on the hill above the jail i went down and killed the gaint and rygor lookout that are in the first ruins building and then returned to the dorf in time before he began moving again. did the same thing when he took a nap before going to the rygor camp. Followed him back to his spawn point where he sat down and gave up.

The tundra kodiak will spawn BEHIND him and start walking to him. I didnt see it comming at first, and when i turned around i saw a giant engaged with the kodiak. I killed the giant first, and then the kodiak, but the kodiak corpse still poofed so i had to do it again. so beware, the kodiak will agro on giants, so clear any out from behind the hill where the dorf sits down or you risk loosing the pelt.

Yes, hand in the axe and use harmony. Unless you are god-on-stilts or want to waste the time of all your friends you need harmony.

You don't need to wipe out the giant fort either. You might need someone to kite the Frost giant captain away though because the boradain WILL path right through him if he is standing at the gate. And as you know harmony is useless if the aggroed mobs, npcs, or players actually touch the harmonied mobs.

The rest of the escort is easy if you keep Bor harmonied and either invis the escorting players or harmony the nearby mob (preferably both and if you must choose harmony is more important).

Once you have killed the rabid grizzly (yes, right where Bor spawns) it is very difficult to get the hand in done before the little wuss despawns. You have about 20-30 seconds. If you fail as i did, no worries. Merely get another dull axe from Garadain, wait for respawn (he spawns every 3 hours) hand him the axe and then the pelt.

He will give you the broken axe and then wander off on his path. It is probably possible to get a second broken axe for a friend at this point, but I did not bother.

Quest can be soloed by 50+ with harmony or the equivalent, but they should bring a friend to be safe.

you don't take a huge faction hit. i went from "kindly" to "amiably" when i turned into a wolf. just do the first couple shawls and you'll be good.

I found this out by almost messing up someone I was trying to help. Until you give him the axe and start the quest, he is on a different faction, and will be KOS to wolform no mater what your Coldain faction is (you can tell he is on a different faction because he is indifferent to all without illusion). Once the quest starts he switches to Coldain faction though, and wolf form will give the same faction change as normal dorfs.

not that you really need to - i just finished ring 1 with a tailoring skill of 57... hunting in EK for a few hours will give you enough stuff up your skill to 50+, which is all you need for the blanket.

Sure, you MIGHT succeed in making the blanket for the first ring with only a 50-ish skill. I got mine to 54 using the free quests in Abysmal Sea, and then proceeded to fail TWICE trying to make the blanket. Given how rare the HQ Tundra Kodiak pelts are, I gave in and used an alt with tailoring 200+ to get the first ring, and plan to MQ the second.

Soloed this quest as a 52 Ranger several times. Harmony, Root, and Panic animal are all you'll need, if even that. Prior to starting this, you may want to attempt to take out the Frost Giant Captain at the Giant fort since there is a chance that he will wander to the front center section of the fort entrance where Boridain paths.

When the suicidal Boridain gets halfway to the Giant fort, cast harmony on him, making sure you get yourself with the spell as well. This way, you'll know whenever Boridain's harmony is wearing off. I didn't bother harmonzing wandering Ry'Gorr, as I'd just slay them myself. I did harmonize wandering Kromriff that wandered too close since killing one takes too long. Next, run to the giant fort entrance and harmonize both guards there. If you took my advice earlier you won't have to worry about the Frost Giant Captain standing smack in the middle of Boridain's path. Boridain will then make his way to a short distance from the Kromriff/Ry'Gorr prison and feed his fat smelly dwarven pie-hole, expecting you to watch his back. I take this opportunity to med a bit and then scout out the immediate area for wandering mobs and take whatever action will work best to keep the area clear.
When he gets his smelly butt in gear again, re-harmonize him as he makes his way down the slope toward the prison. Then run ahead of him again and be sure to harmonize the Giant and Ry'Gorr in the closest broken building in his path. It will look like he is going to wander to his death, but the dummy will turn around and exit the prison area, where he'll head to a point a bit NW of the Ry'Gorr fort. Now this little imbecile will ask you to guard him while he takes a freakin' nap! Once again, I medded and scouted the nearby area for wanderers. Be more vigilant about your scouting, since there are a lot of wanderes in this area and the steep hills hide hidden dangers everywhere.
So superidiot finishes his nappy-poo and promptly makes a beeline toward the Ry'Gorr fort entrance. I re-harmonized Boridain just before he descended the ledge toward the fort. I then run up to the fort entrance and harmonize the two Ry'Gorr guards, since killing them both means possibly get adds from within the fort and could cost too much time and perhaps get the Dwarf killed. True to his imbecilic nature, Boridain runs to the center of the gates and then turns around, eventually heading back to his original spawn point. Keep his path clear as well as the area around the flat hilltop where he spawns.
So once this stupid, stinky, shmuck flops down on his smelly **** and complains about never finding his prey, look immediatly behind him and Lo! there is his Rabid Kodiak heading right at him. I snare, then fear kite the beast until it's dead. Loot the hide and give it to Boridain and he'll return the axe that "he" broke while fighting his foes. Turn this broken axe and your copper ring to Garadain Glacierbane for your reward.

As a last note, you may want to kite the Rabid Kodiak to a spot where you have a better view of your surrounding before finishing it off. This Kodiak aggros everything around it and it's quite frustrating to go through all of that work only to have the final spawn KS'd by some lame wandering mob.

Did this quest with just 2 people, 51 Ranger and 51 Druid. I ran ahead to the Giant fort after giving the dwarf the axe. I simply kited the 3 giants guarding the door away and rooted them. With the entrance to the Giant Fort clear we went to the Giant Prison. Quiver, my ranger, used harmony on the dwarf, while I did the same to the Frost giant and the Rygorr prison guard. Borridan then walked back to his spawn point where the Rabid Kodiak spawned. It was light blue to me, and fell quickly, but before I could turn in the pelt we were jumped by two FGs. By the time we dealt with the nuissance Borridan had despawned. I went back to Garadain and said, "What assistance" and got another axe. When the dwarf respawned I gave him the axe, and then the pelt. Ta-dah! Note that you do NOT have to kill every mob in the Giant Fort and Prison, unless you want to.
