Deep in the bottom of the mines in Thurgadin resides a Coldain named Normon Stonetooth. Talking to him he offers to tell you a secret but he needs a favor done first. If you say, "I will do a favor" he will give you a pick axe and ask that it be sharpened by a smith named Harkon.

Harkon is located at Scar's Edge, a weapon shop. Once you find him, Say, "Stonetooth sent me." He will tell you that he will sharpen the pickaxe if you give him the pick and a small piece of velium. Give Hakon the Pick Axe and a small piece of Velium and you get some faction, and a new pickaxe.

Your faction standing with Coldain has been adjusted by 5.
Your faction standing with Dain Frostreaver IV has been adjusted by 1.
Your faction standing with Kromzek has been adjusted by -1.
Your faction standing with Kromrif has been adjusted by -2.

Go back into the mines and return the pickaxe to Normon Stonetooth. You will get back something called "Velium Focus". The dwarf tells you that by slowing down you mind and body and using the focus you can talk to stone, for the stone is alive. You bring the focus item to Phenocryst, a named geonid in Wakening Land at -3210, -397 inside a maze of caves. You can hail him and such, the geonids conning indifferent to everybody as far as I can tell.

Moving on to the Wakening Lands, if you go to Phenocryst at -3218.17, -408.03, 3.23 and are "indifferent" faction with the Geonid Collective, you can hand in the Velium Focus, which results in the following faction hit:

Your faction standing with the Geonid Collective has been adjusted by 100.

Note, if you are under indifferent by even a point, he won't take the stone, so you have to hand it in to him while invisible. Open trade window, drop in the item, pop your invisibility potion or whatever you can do that doesn't break trade, and then hand it over.

You hail Phenocryst. Phenocryst speaks with a soundless voice, as if you are hearing your own thoughts. 'We sense you are attempting communication with us but do not understand what it is you are trying to convey. We are eager to know more. Perhaps there is one who knows the language of the stone and will speak with us'

Then you give him the Velium Focus.

Phenocryst speaks to you from within your mind, 'You know the stone! This is wonderful! The fulfillment of the prophecy is now one step closer. The most ancient of the stone tells us that one not of stone will come forth and act as our harbinger of ascension. We believe you to be our harbinger. Please help us!'

You reply, "how can I help you?"

Phenocryst speaks from within your mind as well as conveys a sense of joy empathically. 'It is said that the harbinger will find all of our people and unite them. When we join we will know all of our experiences and perhaps then be aware of how to proceed with the next step in our ascension. We implore you to find others like us and make them aware of us. You know the language of the stone and can tell them. We await your return with proof that you have spoken to them." Now you have to go to Crystal Caverns. If you invis up and head down into the caverns, you'll pass through an orc area, then a dwarf area, then a tentacle terror and spiders area, and finally there's a long stretch of tunnel leading up to a zone out point. That long stretch of tunnel is filled with geonids and they con the same as the ones in Wakening Land. Give one of them the focus (any one, doesn't matter, you don't have to hail them or anything) and you'll get it back with the following message:

A geonid seems as if it doesn't recognize you as anything of importance. You attempt to speak with the geonid through your velium focus but all you are able to hear is the same though over and over.., Eat. You have gained no knowledge from these creatures but you notice your focus has been altered slightly.

The description on the focus doesn't change, but it is altered. Take it back to Phenocryst in Wakening Land and give it to him. The following will happen:

Phenocryst sends it's thoughts to you, a feeling of disappointment washes over you, 'It seems the others are not aware of themselves yet. We are alone..So many questions yet we can find no answers. We have been given a very special gift but without direction we are lost. We must find who has made us aware of ourselves and why it has done so.'

You say to Phenocryst, "Find what?"

Phenocryst says in the form of thoughts, 'We must call to it. We must make ourselves heard past these rocks though. A menhir must be constructed to amplify our voice. The stones we will need are not found in this area though. We hear whispers of stones far away that have the ability to channel and amplify our thoughts. We ask you to gather these stones for us harbinger."

You say to Phenocryst, "I will gather these stones for you."

Phenocryst's thoughts flood your mind, 'Thank you Harbinger. We need 3 crystals. One of Beryl, one of Stibnite, and one of the purest Iron. These minerals will only be found deep within the earth where the geology is relatively stable. This Focus will aid you in finding the right crystals. Return it to me with the 3 crystals and we will construct our Menhir. Please hurry Harbinger, our prophecy awaits.

Phenocryst gives you an item for telling him you'll gather the stones. It's a magic, lore, no drop Elbaite Focus that has 5 charges of Identify. It looks like a fire emerald.

The stibnite crystal is found in The Great Divide. If you enter the wurm caves in the center of that zone from the south, go up to the first right, go in and take the next right, you'll be in a room with two spawn points for wurms and there's a patch of blue crystal at the back of the room. The stibnite is behind the crystals and looks like a bag on the floor. It spawns every 1-2 hours or so I think. The description of the item is "Bent Metallic Crystal". It weights 20.0, is magic, lore, and no drop. When you identify it, it identifies as "Stibnite for the Menhir". To identify an item using the Elbaite Focus, target yourself, pick up the item and right click it on the Elbaite Focus in your inventory. It won't change the description of the item, it'll just tell you what it is in your chat window.

The Reddish Crystal can be found in The Hole at location -65, -200, -275. It appears as a pouch on the far side of the pool with the sword in the stone.

The crystal of purest iron is in Burning Woods. It's sitting on the meteor near Slixin Klex. It's item description is "Heavy Metallic Crystal" and is
magic, lore, and no drop. It weighs 14.0.

Take these three crystals and the Elbaite Focus back to Wakening Lands to Phenocryst and you're ready for the next step. Get 1-2 parties of 50+ players and bring 'em with you. Due to the dragon that spawns in Wakening Land near the dragon portal, you might want to approach from skyshrine. If you're going along the wall from skyshrine towards the caves, you want to gather your troops at the second cave entrance along the wall. Phenocryst is closest to that entrance. Get to know the path between you and him at this point so you're familiar with how to get out in a hurry. At this point, all the geonids should con amiable to you. Finishing the Velium Focus section achieves this faction adjustment. Make sure you have a ranger in your party of friends. You're going to have to track down some triggered MOBs and fight them.

You submit the items to Phenocryst.

Phenocryst makes no sound but it's voice fills your mind. 'We have always held our memories within the earth and stone but only recently have we become aware of them. We do not know what happened or who gave us this wonderful gift but we can now access those memories and are aware of it's storage. With that knowledge has come questions and desires. When the prophecy comes to be then we will have our answers and fulfill our desires.'

Phenocryst 's familiar thoughts flood into your mind again, 'You truly are the Harbinger, take this Focus as a mark of your friendship with us. Now we can construct the Menhir, we need ..,..,the stones speak.., There is a problem. Ones of flesh are coming, the large ones, 3 of them. They must not disturb us while we construct the Menhir! Please stop them Harbinger! bring us proof of their destruction along with your Focus and then we will begin the calling. Our ascension is at hand!'

You lose the focus and the three crystals and in return gain another focus item with the description "Azurite Focus". It's a magic, lore, no drop item weighing 0.5.

Now head outside and start tracking. After a few minutes, two "acolyte of Zek" giants will show up on track. A minute later or so, a Bloodpriest Loukond will show up on tracker as well. You'll have to run out and pull the acolytes to you once you track them. If they are snared, they still run quite fast. These giants con blue at 52 and are quite magic resistant. Make sure you pull these, they're almost more important than the Bloodpriest. They get attacked by the various mercenaries in the zone sometimes and get killed before you can do the job. If you have to pull mercenaries with the acolytes, do. After killing both acolytes, loot them. Each one has a medallion that has the description, "Holy Symbol of Zek", which is magic, no drop, and weighs 2.0. After the acolytes are done, go out and get the Bloodpriest. Bloodpriest Loukond should eventually walk up to the cave entrance and stand outside it if nobody pulls it. After a minute of standing outside the cave, he depops, which is why you have to do the acolytes first (they pop first) then the bloodpriest (he'll get to the cave probably if you can't find him, the acolytes might not). The bloodpriest cons blue at 52 and is just as magic resistant. He drops a third and final medallion with the same description. You must get all three medallions in order to for this part to prove fruitful. When you kill the giants, you take the following faction hits: Kromzek (worse), Kromrif (worse), King Tormax (worse), and Claws of Veeshan (better). The giants never enter the caves to attack the geonids or anything. Everything will happen outside the caves and the giants won't aggro the dragon if it's up either. The Bloodpriest Loukond is also not to be confused with Priest Bjek, another giant who wanders in the area sometimes who is red at 52 and not related to this quest.

Now. Take your Azurite Focus and the three medallions to Phenocryst. Submit them to Phenocryst.

Phenocryst 's thoughts become your own, a feeling of joy overwhelms you, 'Because of you we can at last speak with our maker. We were once given a gift, and we ask that you accept this gift from us now so that we may come closer to that which we owe our sentience to. Now..,we must construct the Menhir..'

You lose the Azurite Focus and medallions and get the following item in return, which is, it seems, the reward for this quest.

Phenocryst's Focus [Magic, Lore, No Drop]
AC 5 DEX 3, CHR 3, INT 10, MANA 40, SV FIRE/DISEASE/POISON/COLD 3, SV MAGIC 5 Usable by all races but only usable by caster classes like wizards, enchanters, etc. and not hybrids.

Then then geonids, led by Phenocryst, start walking around, through the halls and such. When this happens, you see the following message:

"Phenocryst begins to resonate. All the stones about you begin to resonate seemingly at its command. The Geonids all begin moving, all to construct the Menhir."

I'm assuming they get together at this point at make their Menhir and the quest is over. I didn't stick around to watch because we got some tar goo on us and that put a dampener on things real quick. It's very important to note that although geonids con indifferent or amiable, goo does not and if you get any of it on you and a geonid is close by, it'll aggro the geonid. No idea why this is, it doesn't make any sense, but it's the case. Also, enchanters can skip a huge chunk of this quest by casting Collaboration on Phenocryst and starting from the point where to say to him "I will gather these stones for you". The Velium Focus half gives you the faction to be able to tell that to Phenocryst. Provided an enchanter MAKES him amiable, they don't have to bother with the first half.

This quest provides a means of acquiring Geonid Collective faction.

After handing over Normon's Axe [unsharpened] and 1 Small Piece of Velium to Hakon Brightsteel:

Your faction standing with Coldain has been adjusted by 5.
Your faction standing with Dain Frostreaver IV has been adjusted by 1.
Your faction standing with Kromzek has been adjusted by -1.
Your faction standing with Kromrif has been adjusted by -2.

Handing Normon's Axe [sharpened] back to Normon Stonetooth yields no faction hits, but rewards the Velium Focus item.

I had to do this, as I had accidentally killed a single Geonid.

Normon will respond to every phrase up to the "secrets" part, after that he will always respond about his family/clan. He won't give you his pickaxe anymore, which means you can't get it sharpened, which means you can't even start the quest at all. And that means you can't improve faction with the Geonid Collective.

Knowing Sony and their corner-cutting, this quest will probably remain broken.

Very sad.

And to save you a little extra time: this is the southernmost tip of the glowing orange crater. You've got to be right next to it to see it, so look at the bottom.

I did the first parts of this quest to gain faction with the geonids to make it easier to cull the herd for the 8th shawl. (Much easier fighting them when not KoS; just use Pacify to avoid social aggro.) Anyway, for those like me who like to role-play through the quests (so for instance, how would I know to go up to this guy and offer to do him a favor?), I figured out how the full conversation is expected to go to start this one:

You say, 'Hail, Normon Stonetooth'

Normon Stonetooth seems to ignore your greeting, peering at the stone in front of him intently as if reading some invisible text. After a long while he sighs deeply and says, 'Somethin I kin help ye with, whoever you are?'

You say, 'I am Terrwini.'

(no response)

You say, 'Um, so who are you?'

Normon Stonetooth speaks as he continues staring at the stone, 'I mine. So they call me a miner. Name's Normon, Normon Stonetooth, Normon the miner.. Did I say I mine?'

You say, 'What do you mine?'

Normon Stonetooth says 'Well I look fer velium o'course. But ye know, I pull very little of it out o the mundane rock these days. Sometimes I hear it whisperin' to me. The stone, the velium, everything down here talks to each other. If ye're lucky enough they tell ya secrets. That be why I listen more these days than pull velium.'

You say, 'What sort of secrets?'

Normon Stonetooth snickers and says, ' Now if'n I told ye that it wouldn't be a secret no more now would it? No, I can't tell ya what they tells me, but I kin help ya ta listen. But first ye'll need ta do me a favor heheh.'

You say, 'I'll do you a favor.'

Normon Stonetooth says 'Ahh, well me pick is a bit dull, don't cut like it should. Up in the city proper ye kin find a weapons smith named Hakon. Take me pick axe and and tell him Stonetooth sent ye. Then give it to him, wait fer him ta sharpen it, an bring it back to me. Then I'll help ya ta listen to the stone.'

(You get Normon's Axe -- identifies as "Dull pickaxe" -- and go find Hakon in a building near where the entrance path meets the main city loop.)

You say, 'Stonetooth sent me.'

Hakon Brightsteel says 'You spoke with old Stonetooth? Eeegads man! No one talks to 'im. Legend says he spent so much time down there that he eats nothin' but rocks now and drinks melted velium. Well I guess I should sharpen his axe, but I'll need some velium ore to repair it some. Bring me a chunk o' Velium Ore along with his axe and I'll get to work.'

(Note that he really means a "Small Piece of Velium". The non-tradeskill "Small Chunk of Velium" does not work. Give him the velium and the axe.)

Hakon Brightsteel says 'Excellent! I'll get ta work now.' Hakon whistles an unfamiliar tune as he repairs and sharpens the pick axe. 'Here ye are, Terrwini. Watch that old Stonetooth, he's a few steins short of a keg, if ye know what I mean'

Your faction standing with Coldain got better.
Your faction standing with Dain Frostreaver IV got better.
Your faction standing with Kromzek got worse.
Your faction standing with Kromrif could not possibly get any worse.
You gain party experience!!

(Get back Normon's Axe -- now identifies as "Sharpened pickaxe" -- and take it back to Normon.)

Normon Stonetooth says 'Ahhhh, good work, Terrwini. Now ta speak with the stone ye need somethin' ta focus on. Use this piece o' velium as yer focus. Ta speak the language o' the stone ye need ta slow down like the stone. Rock looks like it don't move but it does, just real slow. So place yer focus on the stones ye wish ta speak with and get yerself real slow, both yer body an' yer noggin. Then if yer quiet enough ye might hear 'em. An' that's what's to it.'

You gain party experience!!

You get a Velium Focus; it has no additional item lore. When you hand it to the Phenocryst and get it back, it looks the same but isn't; you can have both though both are lore. (Also, "/outputfile inventory" shows different ID numbers.) So no, you can't skip seeing the Phenocryst and go off to find the others in CC.

Dain faction

I have done the start of this quest well over 200 times , I also did the 1st 2 shawls 3 times before moving on with the rest of the shawl quest. I am still full kos to Dain and his guards. This is not a good way at all to gain faction with him!

Is the Priest stunnable?
RE: Stunnable?

All giants are unstunnable and unmezzable. They are basically immune to all effects that make them stand still and drool on themselves, which ruins the fun for us enchanters.

The first turn in requires a small piece of velium (the stackable kind) and you get +coldain +dain -kromzek -kromrif

Seems to be an easy way to get faction with dain. Just farm a couple stacks of velium pieces from crystal caverns and then run back and forth between the dwarf in the mine and the dwarf in the weapon shop.
Skip some?

Is it possible to go directly to Crystal Caverns after I get the Velium Focus, or do I need to see Pheno first? It seems from the walkthru that he doesnt change the focus the first time.
Which Cave Entrance ??
# Apr 08 2003 at 12:38 PM Rating: Decent
After reading the quest and all the posts, I am STILL confused as to which cave entrance we need to set up camp at !

The quest says the second one from Skyshrine, which is the top most entrance when you look at the EQ Atlas map, then further down, someone says its the one nearest teh portal, which is entrance 3 from Skyshrine, then someone else says that they camped at entrance 3, then had to run to the giants who had walked to the second entrance !!

So the question is::: which one do I have to camp at :) 1, 2 or 3 as you look left to right on the EQ Atlas map ???

The correct entrance is the northmost one of those nearest to Skyshrine, not the one nearest to the dragon portal. Though to be honest if your pulling the 3 giants to the group, with the pulling running back out to fetch the next one as soon as the MA tags it, it doesn't really matter which entrance your at. However to see the show at the end, when they construct their Menir, you need to be at the entrance I mentioned.

I'm not sure if it's just my server, but the Phenocryst was pacing back and forth outside of the cave. He wouldn't respond to my hails. He kept saying the things he would say had he been given the quest items. Such as "All the stones about you begin to resonate seemingly at its command. The geonids all begin moving to construct the Menhir." With out any interaction from any other player. Everytime I tryed to give him the velium focus to him he would say "I do not need this item" I currently con indifferent to him, as you are supposed to had you never killed a Geonid, which I haven't.

KoS faction question
# Dec 29 2002 at 9:51 AM Rating: Decent
Ok....I was unaware of this sweet item when i was in my mid thirties...and slaughtered many a geonid for the really nice gems they drop...and am now unfortunately KoS to the geos...I was wondering however if Wolf form or something of the like would change that faction...I know it works on some mobs and was wondering if anyone who was KoS has tried it out yet on them...also...does anyone know of a way to get the geo faction back up? and what about if you are just "Glared at threateningly" which is still KoS....could a chanter raise the faction enough to do the camo trick or is that too low to even try it? Thanks for any extra info

Yes you can get the faction back, all you need is someone to make you invisable after you opened trade screen with Pheo.. It will make you indiff and your faction goes up one lvl just repeat this till you are indiff again, then you need one more hand in cause you will need amiably faction
Problems

Well, I tried the quest but the Giants handded us our rears with smiles on their faces. So I went to restart the quest but now Harkon wont sharpen the axe. I hand him the axe and the velium and he just hands them back saying he doesnt need them. any ideas? is there a way to respawn the giants without doing the whole thing over?

Yes just say "I will gather these stones" and he should give you the ebalite focus and you go collect the 3 stones again to respawn the giants. Better yet collect the three stones again and then say the trigger phrase, then just hand all 4 items back immediately to respawn the 3 giants.

the showdown
# Oct 02 2002 at 10:13 AM Rating: Decent
When quester hands in pieces to Pheno, make sure party is ready for a crowd control type scenario. You'll most likely get all 3 of the giants at once. Plus it is difficult for puller/tracker to avoid picking up adds while bringing in giants. In our case, we had an add frost giant and a panther, and we didnt have a chanter in grp, so we ghetto mezz'd what we could. When all 5 were at camp, MT went straight over to bloodpriest to keep him busy an out of the way. Our ranger tanked one accolyte of zek, and a frost giant. Wizzy in the grp blew up panther in one nuke, then quickly dispatched the frost giant. The other accolyte had been kited off alittle ways, rooted, then snared. We had 2 healers in grp, 1 cleric and a druid, cleric was in charge of healing mt, druid had heals on ranger. Once things had settled down, they were all easy kills. Bloodpriest never got a chance to try a CH. Once the final turn in was done, Phenocryst will come running out of cave and stop a little ways out in forest. After a min or 2 he turns into the Menhir, cons blue to a 60, stronger more m.r. version of pheno. So we decided to try an kill it, got it down to 40 percent, then had to evac. Extremely magic resistant, resisted all roots, snares, slows, tashes...seems also to be a caster, tank was getting hit hard by nukes. Also resisted all normal nukes, after switching to lures, was still getting some full resists. Definitely a melee only mob...hope this info helps.....gluk

there are two entrances to the cave where phinny is...MAKE SURE YOUR AT THE SECOND ONE!!!! the guide above says that bloodpriest will walk to cave...well he does...but if your at the wrong cave you wonlt get there in time...

you want to be at the cave entrance thats back in its own little alcove...you will see what i mean when you look at the map...

So if you are apprehensive, you cant do the invis trade trick anymore and you cant do the quest at all?

I just completed the quest. Had 10 of us and it was overkill.

After the geonids had constructed the Menhir I stood to pose for a screenshot with the Menhir. Then the Menhir self destructs with an aoe nuke, my pet got upset, agroed the Menhir and then I was toast. But with the quest completed at last, I just ROFLMAO :)

Geos
# Jul 09 2002 at 1:27 PM Rating: Default
The first time I went to the Geos and handed in the Velium Focus I was apprehensive. Needless to say, they really didn't like me. The next time I went over with a ranger friend and asked her to camo me once I started the trade and POOF!! The trade worked AND my faction went up! I went up to indiffrent, so I went and got the Velium Focus again and handed it in again and my faction went up again... right up to Amiable. So as long as your not KOS and you have someone to camo you during the trade, you can raise you faction with these guys.. just takes a little time.

I think you open the trade window, THEN have the druid or who ever camo you while in the trade, not sure if this'll work, but I think invis/camo will only prevent you from beginning a trade, Good luck :)
Notes for the puller
# Jul 09 2002 at 1:05 PM Rating: Decent
As designated puller - twice - for the giants, I have a few additional notes to offer.

Our raiding party set up their ambush outside the cave entrance that was closer to the portal-in, and not the other entrance farther around the mountain point. I waited out by the mountain point, caught an Accolyte of Zek giant on track immediately after our caster turned-in his pieces, ran straight to it, and still found all three.

My conclusion: The Bloodpriest spawns pretty fast, so don't expect that he will spawn long enough after the others to make him show up late for the party. This happened both times I pulled for this quest, even when the Accolytes were the only ones up on track first. By the time I got to them, all three were there, tromping through the forest.

I pulled with my bow, one shot on one Accolyte and all three aggro'ed immediately. No snare on any of them. While they are perhaps faster than standard-fare hill giants, these giants are not even as fast as SoW as I easily outran them and had to hold aggro on my first target by bow kiting him back to the party. (Still, I mostly ran and just stopped to toss an arrow his way every so often so as not to lose him.)

The biggest benefit to pulling like this was that (on our second, more-successful attempt at this quest) I lost aggro on the second Accolyte and the Bloodpriest. They forgot about me and went on their merry way while I hauled the first one off to his speedy death. This could be a huge negative if something else happened to see them and kill them first, but for us it was a lucky break as it successfully split the spawn. (Still, the reason we did the quest twice was that the first time we had a druid kiting one around to hold him off, the druid got killed and the giant either was killed or despawned before we got him.)

Immediately after tagging to the MA, I ran back for the other giants, concerned that something else would get them first. I found them both standing guard outside the farthest entrance to the geonid caves! So the Bloodpriest is not the only one that will wander on up to the caves if you wait long enough. (They were all running that way to start out, so I suspect they would all just head on over there and not really even require pulling, if left to their own devices.) I was able to get aggro from both again with just one shot to the Accolyte, and pull them back around the mountain to the awaiting ambush.

Another note here, while pulling them around the zone wall I encountered two more giants guarding what I assume was the middle entrance to the caves and had to swing out from the zone wall a bit to avoid aggro'ing more stompers as I went by. Not a problem, really, but something the puller should be aware of so they don't train-in a party-crashing group.

And finally, I think there is a black panther in WL who likes my red hair 'cause both times (different days) I had to stop and root this guy snapping at my feet. Silly panther.

Hope this is helpful. It was a fun little battle.
Only Once...

I tried to do this quest once...well, I was dub to the Geonids, and needless to say they were upset with me...I heard doing the first part of the quest again "might" get fac back with the Geonids...but, it won't let me do it again. I give the Axe and the small block of velium to him like I did the first time, but he just says he doesn't need them and gives them back...any ideas? Thanks
