Deep in the bottom of the mines in Thurgadin resides a Coldain named Normon Stonetooth. Talking to him he offers to tell you a secret but he needs a favor done first. If you say, "I will do a favor" he will give you a pick axe and ask that it be sharpened by a smith named Harkon.

Harkon is located at Scar's Edge, a weapon shop. Once you find him, Say, "Stonetooth sent me." He will tell you that he will sharpen the pickaxe if you give him the pick and a small piece of velium. Give Hakon the Pick Axe and a small piece of Velium and you get some faction, and a new pickaxe.

Your faction standing with Coldain has been adjusted by 5.
Your faction standing with Dain Frostreaver IV has been adjusted by 1.
Your faction standing with Kromzek has been adjusted by -1.
Your faction standing with Kromrif has been adjusted by -2.

Go back into the mines and return the pickaxe to Normon Stonetooth. You will get back something called "Velium Focus". The dwarf tells you that by slowing down you mind and body and using the focus you can talk to stone, for the stone is alive. You bring the focus item to Phenocryst, a named geonid in Wakening Land at -3210, -397 inside a maze of caves. You can hail him and such, the geonids conning indifferent to everybody as far as I can tell.

Moving on to the Wakening Lands, if you go to Phenocryst at -3218.17, -408.03, 3.23 and are "indifferent" faction with the Geonid Collective, you can hand in the Velium Focus, which results in the following faction hit:

Your faction standing with the Geonid Collective has been adjusted by 100.

Note, if you are under indifferent by even a point, he won't take the stone, so you have to hand it in to him while invisible. Open trade window, drop in the item, pop your invisibility potion or whatever you can do that doesn't break trade, and then hand it over.

You hail Phenocryst. Phenocryst speaks with a soundless voice, as if you are hearing your own thoughts. 'We sense you are attempting communication with us but do not understand what it is you are trying to convey. We are eager to know more. Perhaps there is one who knows the language of the stone and will speak with us'

Then you give him the Velium Focus.

Phenocryst speaks to you from within your mind, 'You know the stone! This is wonderful! The fulfillment of the prophecy is now one step closer. The most ancient of the stone tells us that one not of stone will come forth and act as our harbinger of ascension. We believe you to be our harbinger. Please help us!'

You reply, "how can I help you?"

Phenocryst speaks from within your mind as well as conveys a sense of joy empathically. 'It is said that the harbinger will find all of our people and unite them. When we join we will know all of our experiences and perhaps then be aware of how to proceed with the next step in our ascension. We implore you to find others like us and make them aware of us. You know the language of the stone and can tell them. We await your return with proof that you have spoken to them." Now you have to go to Crystal Caverns. If you invis up and head down into the caverns, you'll pass through an orc area, then a dwarf area, then a tentacle terror and spiders area, and finally there's a long stretch of tunnel leading up to a zone out point. That long stretch of tunnel is filled with geonids and they con the same as the ones in Wakening Land. Give one of them the focus (any one, doesn't matter, you don't have to hail them or anything) and you'll get it back with the following message:

A geonid seems as if it doesn't recognize you as anything of importance. You attempt to speak with the geonid through your velium focus but all you are able to hear is the same though over and over.., Eat. You have gained no knowledge from these creatures but you notice your focus has been altered slightly.

The description on the focus doesn't change, but it is altered. Take it back to Phenocryst in Wakening Land and give it to him. The following will happen:

Phenocryst sends it's thoughts to you, a feeling of disappointment washes over you, 'It seems the others are not aware of themselves yet. We are alone..So many questions yet we can find no answers. We have been given a very special gift but without direction we are lost. We must find who has made us aware of ourselves and why it has done so.'

You say to Phenocryst, "Find what?"

Phenocryst says in the form of thoughts, 'We must call to it. We must make ourselves heard past these rocks though. A menhir must be constructed to amplify our voice. The stones we will need are not found in this area though. We hear whispers of stones far away that have the ability to channel and amplify our thoughts. We ask you to gather these stones for us harbinger."

You say to Phenocryst, "I will gather these stones for you."

Phenocryst's thoughts flood your mind, 'Thank you Harbinger. We need 3 crystals. One of Beryl, one of Stibnite, and one of the purest Iron. These minerals will only be found deep within the earth where the geology is relatively stable. This Focus will aid you in finding the right crystals. Return it to me with the 3 crystals and we will construct our Menhir. Please hurry Harbinger, our prophecy awaits.

Phenocryst gives you an item for telling him you'll gather the stones. It's a magic, lore, no drop Elbaite Focus that has 5 charges of Identify. It looks like a fire emerald.

The stibnite crystal is found in The Great Divide. If you enter the wurm caves in the center of that zone from the south, go up to the first right, go in and take the next right, you'll be in a room with two spawn points for wurms and there's a patch of blue crystal at the back of the room. The stibnite is behind the crystals and looks like a bag on the floor. It spawns every 1-2 hours or so I think. The description of the item is "Bent Metallic Crystal". It weights 20.0, is magic, lore, and no drop. When you identify it, it identifies as "Stibnite for the Menhir". To identify an item using the Elbaite Focus, target yourself, pick up the item and right click it on the Elbaite Focus in your inventory. It won't change the description of the item, it'll just tell you what it is in your chat window.

The Reddish Crystal can be found in The Hole at location -65, -200, -275. It appears as a pouch on the far side of the pool with the sword in the stone.

The crystal of purest iron is in Burning Woods. It's sitting on the meteor near Slixin Klex. It's item description is "Heavy Metallic Crystal" and is
magic, lore, and no drop. It weighs 14.0.

Take these three crystals and the Elbaite Focus back to Wakening Lands to Phenocryst and you're ready for the next step. Get 1-2 parties of 50+ players and bring 'em with you. Due to the dragon that spawns in Wakening Land near the dragon portal, you might want to approach from skyshrine. If you're going along the wall from skyshrine towards the caves, you want to gather your troops at the second cave entrance along the wall. Phenocryst is closest to that entrance. Get to know the path between you and him at this point so you're familiar with how to get out in a hurry. At this point, all the geonids should con amiable to you. Finishing the Velium Focus section achieves this faction adjustment. Make sure you have a ranger in your party of friends. You're going to have to track down some triggered MOBs and fight them.

You submit the items to Phenocryst.

Phenocryst makes no sound but it's voice fills your mind. 'We have always held our memories within the earth and stone but only recently have we become aware of them. We do not know what happened or who gave us this wonderful gift but we can now access those memories and are aware of it's storage. With that knowledge has come questions and desires. When the prophecy comes to be then we will have our answers and fulfill our desires.'

Phenocryst 's familiar thoughts flood into your mind again, 'You truly are the Harbinger, take this Focus as a mark of your friendship with us. Now we can construct the Menhir, we need ..,..,the stones speak.., There is a problem. Ones of flesh are coming, the large ones, 3 of them. They must not disturb us while we construct the Menhir! Please stop them Harbinger! bring us proof of their destruction along with your Focus and then we will begin the calling. Our ascension is at hand!'

You lose the focus and the three crystals and in return gain another focus item with the description "Azurite Focus". It's a magic, lore, no drop item weighing 0.5.

Now head outside and start tracking. After a few minutes, two "acolyte of Zek" giants will show up on track. A minute later or so, a Bloodpriest Loukond will show up on tracker as well. You'll have to run out and pull the acolytes to you once you track them. If they are snared, they still run quite fast. These giants con blue at 52 and are quite magic resistant. Make sure you pull these, they're almost more important than the Bloodpriest. They get attacked by the various mercenaries in the zone sometimes and get killed before you can do the job. If you have to pull mercenaries with the acolytes, do. After killing both acolytes, loot them. Each one has a medallion that has the description, "Holy Symbol of Zek", which is magic, no drop, and weighs 2.0. After the acolytes are done, go out and get the Bloodpriest. Bloodpriest Loukond should eventually walk up to the cave entrance and stand outside it if nobody pulls it. After a minute of standing outside the cave, he depops, which is why you have to do the acolytes first (they pop first) then the bloodpriest (he'll get to the cave probably if you can't find him, the acolytes might not). The bloodpriest cons blue at 52 and is just as magic resistant. He drops a third and final medallion with the same description. You must get all three medallions in order to for this part to prove fruitful. When you kill the giants, you take the following faction hits: Kromzek (worse), Kromrif (worse), King Tormax (worse), and Claws of Veeshan (better). The giants never enter the caves to attack the geonids or anything. Everything will happen outside the caves and the giants won't aggro the dragon if it's up either. The Bloodpriest Loukond is also not to be confused with Priest Bjek, another giant who wanders in the area sometimes who is red at 52 and not related to this quest.

Now. Take your Azurite Focus and the three medallions to Phenocryst. Submit them to Phenocryst.

Phenocryst 's thoughts become your own, a feeling of joy overwhelms you, 'Because of you we can at last speak with our maker. We were once given a gift, and we ask that you accept this gift from us now so that we may come closer to that which we owe our sentience to. Now..,we must construct the Menhir..'

You lose the Azurite Focus and medallions and get the following item in return, which is, it seems, the reward for this quest.

Phenocryst's Focus [Magic, Lore, No Drop]
AC 5 DEX 3, CHR 3, INT 10, MANA 40, SV FIRE/DISEASE/POISON/COLD 3, SV MAGIC 5 Usable by all races but only usable by caster classes like wizards, enchanters, etc. and not hybrids.

Then then geonids, led by Phenocryst, start walking around, through the halls and such. When this happens, you see the following message:

"Phenocryst begins to resonate. All the stones about you begin to resonate seemingly at its command. The Geonids all begin moving, all to construct the Menhir."

I'm assuming they get together at this point at make their Menhir and the quest is over. I didn't stick around to watch because we got some tar goo on us and that put a dampener on things real quick. It's very important to note that although geonids con indifferent or amiable, goo does not and if you get any of it on you and a geonid is close by, it'll aggro the geonid. No idea why this is, it doesn't make any sense, but it's the case. Also, enchanters can skip a huge chunk of this quest by casting Collaboration on Phenocryst and starting from the point where to say to him "I will gather these stones for you". The Velium Focus half gives you the faction to be able to tell that to Phenocryst. Provided an enchanter MAKES him amiable, they don't have to bother with the first half.

#Anonymous, Posted: Jun 23 2002 at 6:03 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) i want to say i have done this quest twice in two days and both times the stupid giants despawned. I know i had enough people i had two groups of 50 pluses and killed the one giant easily but the other two despawned and they where pulled so i think this quest is BS cause if they despawn you have to start all over again

Ok I did this quest last night with my Dark Elf Necro. Here is how I got it to work. Target Stonetooth and hail him, next don't TARGET him, have nothing targeted and Say "I will do a favor" and I got the Pick for me to Sharpen for him. Hope this helps,

Does this quest give pos Coldain faction? At least the first part?

The first step in this quest was broken as of the last patch on June 5th. I've been doing the Thurga portion of this quest successfully hundreds of times to regain my Dain faction. Even though I still have amiable Coldain faction, telling Normon Stonetooth "I will do a favor" now gets a blank stare from him, and a "is there anything I kin do fer you?" reply since the last patch. Either this quest has been broken, or it now requires both Coldain and Dain faction to initiate.

According to EQTrader's a lot of people are having NPC quest problems. Their suggestion is to *not* have the NPC targetted, and to be sure you have your inventory window closed.

With nothing and no one targetted, some quest NPCs are working. I started this quest after that patch and he wouldn't do crud for me.

I'm off to find out if this will work, though I'm not sure how to get around the Pheno part since he must be targetted to hand in stuff and...oh well.

HI,

Small Chunks of Velium is foraged, not dropped by any mob.
Have a look at the merchants in Thurg. I've foraged a lot of those and have sold all of them. If no luck by the merchants, ask a Ranger or Druid for some.

Small chunks of Velium do drop, I looted a bunch off various spiders in Velk's Lab.

Best drops I've seen were Ry'Gorr Miners in the Crystal Caverns, the velium you need DOES stack, the miners also drop blocks (small also) of velium which you don't need for this quest, but if you're doing coldain shawl quest #4 you'll want these too :)

Small chunks of velium do not work. The item needed is a small piece of velium ore (the stackable kind).

I guess I can't do this quest now, since I killed some geos in my 30's. I was going to do the invis & hand in focus trick a few times to get my faction up, but the patch message says that you can no longer trade while invis. I sure wish I had done this part of the quest last week :-(

I just did this quest last night being apprehensive. If you are KOS, there's no way to fix it. I killed a few of the geonids back in my early 40s, but not enough to be KOS.

Bring the velium focus from Thurgadin and a inviser friend to the Phenocryst. Start the trade with him and then have your friend invis you. You get a possitive faction increase, and can then do the quest starting from Thurgadin again to get above indifferent. Doing this trick still works after the May 8 patch.

But if you are KOS you'll never be able to uninvis to start the trade. Upsets me that this faction is there and there isn't a normal way to increase it, you have to pull these tricks.

There is a way. Every mob has a small delay on aggro, so just time when you start your trade to when you're going to be invis... can do it like that. I suggest bringing a wizard and trying it in a bank you're KOS in, if you can bank without being aggro'd you'll be fine, if not evac out.

This quest is cake for enchanters u can pretty much skip the whole thing just collect ur three stones that u need go back and "cast benovalce on him so he's amilbly" say " I will collect these stones for you" then ur done get ur groups together and turn the 4 items in there ya go now all u have left is to kill the giants and turn the items in for ur awsome item.

I'm having trouble getting started here. I'm indiff (never killed a rockhead) and I gave him the velium focus that I got from stonetooth and he gives me nothing, further, he wont respond to my hails. If I hail a genoid inside the caves, they respond, but I gave them one and I got nothing, ARGH!

Pheno Final Fight
# Mar 29 2002 at 3:33 PM Rating: Excellent
I finished this last night and it's extremely simple. Assuming that you can do everything else all you need for the final fight is two druids and a mage. I turned in the items while the two druids chilled at the cave entrance. Once you turn the items in have the two druids track the two Accolytes of Zek. Have them bring back to cave entrance where (if you're a 60 mage) the water pet will finish them off fairly quickly. Have one druid kite the add while the other druid heals your pet. After first one is dead bring second one and have both druids heal pet. Last but not least send both druids out to get the Bloodpriest Loukond and take care of him. (He CH's but if you nuke he goes down fairly easily.) If you want to bring a cleric along just in case feel free, but it's not necessary.
If you want to kill the giants multiple times simply don't turn in the stuff you get from giants and have next person turn in their stuff.

Have fun.

At the end of the quest, Pheno is gone. (Those who have done the quest and follow it through will know why.) It takes approximately 40-45 minutes for him to repop back in the caves. At least that is what I personally observed on 3/24/02.

We spawned the giants three times in a row, all within a half an hour, last night. Had eight people:

52 Cleric (me)
55 Wizard
52 Wizard
53 Mage42 Ranger
55 Druid
52 Ranger
52 Paladin

Once the focus and ground-spawned metals were given to pheno, the accolytes spawned immediately. Our rangers and druid were out away from the caves as the items were turned in. Both saw the giants on track, and quickly pulled. The 42 ranger ran back into the woods to find the priest, which spanwed within one minute after the items were turned it.

Took about 45 minutes to get everyone ported and assembled, and another half an hour to do all 9 killings.

My Stun spell worked all three times as the preist tried to c heal himself. Although the giants can't be stunned, it did interupted his c heal casting.

The pally was the MA, and in each of the three battles, I only had to cast one Celestial Healing, and one Complete healing. We managed to keep agro on only the pally during all 9 fights.

It went so smoothly, I was tempted to start a twink caster just to get this item hehe.

51 druid, 56 necro(me), 57 monk, 58 druid, 59 ranger....1 death and had to evac. yay go bugs!
bloodpriest started to ch so druids cast furry of air..."Your target is immune to the stun portion of this spell. Your target resisted the Furry of Air spell."
well after that i tried 14 or 15 times to fear him ALL resisted. i've done the quest tons of times and never had a problem(and landed 3 fears in a row before that) so only thing i can guess is that the stun resist somehow bugged him to make him unfearable
he ended up gating and when ranger went to re-pull a corrupted panther aggrod, it was unfearable(so 54 or 55) and blue, hit for 200 and summoned

we got ranger a rez, then he, the 51 druid, and i went back to try it again, weee it wasnt gay and we killed all 3 even though he CHed twice(gogo fears that last 1 sec)

anyways friends 24 wizzie looted all 3 talismans off these giants(btw all 3 symbols, or whatever they are, are all named the same thing) and identified the one off bloodpriest and one of the other ones...they identified the same, so he made certain NOT to give the one from bloodpriest to pheno, and still got focus. my guess is that you could do the quest without ever even seeing bloodpriest, just trigger, pull 2 accolytes off somewhere, trigger after bloodpriest depops, grab 1 accolyte and done. though if you can do priest it'd be better to do it that way /shrug

hope i helped some of you guys out gl

this past saturday some of my guildmates tried to complete the quest, and after everything was handed in properly, the named giants never spawned. this was on the karana server, so not sure if that makes a difference across the board, but im gonna try it again tonight or tomorrow night -- hope it was just some mistake in the steps of the quest and not a bug itself. Then again, a bug in a quest wouldnt be anything new in THIS game.
Velium Blocks
# Feb 04 2002 at 10:28 AM Rating: Default
Ok Small pieces of velium can be found in VL. These are easy to get if your 45 plus just get in a group thier, and eventually you will get them or try to auctionn for them in the zone someone might sell you one. Otherwise thier not that hard to get i group thier all time, and their pretty good drop rates on them. You might try auctioning in thurigan also alot of people will go thier to sell that junk to merchants and such.

For Darkelfs wondering if they can do this yes you can =). Aslong as you have'nt killed any geonids you must not be KoS to them. Only to be KoS to them if you have killed them. Their is some way to repair the faction butt i'am not sure how to fix it.
Spawn Times
# Jan 23 2002 at 2:53 PM Rating: Default
The pieces that need to be gotten from Splitpaw, Burning Woods, and Great Divide have a two hour spawn time. So having a group running around together get these things are in for a wait.

The Great Divide item though has TWO spawns, so two people can pick these up. Unless someone else happened to get one before you got there and it's not been 2 hours.

For someone with low int, this item is a must! My faction was dubious, so it took about four trips back and forth doing the first part of the quest till i was aimable with Phenocryst. Did this quest all in a day. I was the lowest in the group at level 50, we had a 58 druid, 58 necro, 56 paladin, 55 ranger, 51 cleric (2) 52 enchanters and a few others in the other group, but all well about me.
Geonid Faction
# Jan 02 2002 at 10:52 PM Rating: Default
I was apprehensive to Geonid faction, and have repaired it. Heres how:

Normally everone starts out indiff to geonid collective. When you complete the 1st part of the quest and hand in the Velium Focus from thurg, your indiff faction goes up to aimable, which is required to complete the quest. However if you are apprehensive or dubious, you must do the 1st part of the quest (handing in the velium focus from thurg) several times (2 for me at apprehensive) until you are aimable. if you just hand the focus to him at apprehensive or dubious he will eat it obviously, you need someone to invis you while you have the focus in pheno's trade window, after you are invis'd /con and make sure your indiff, then click give, you gain faction with geonid collective.

Keep doing this until you are aimable, then say "How can I help you?" If he says hes unsure etc etc your not good enough faction, go back to thurg. If he talks about the stones then you are OK, and can give him the stones to trigger the giants.

Hope this clears everything up

BTW invis/trade trick working as of 01/02/2002

Took me a minute to find this one too. It is at /loc n484 n1179. Like the others it looks like a bag and it sits on the edge of the meteor. It's kinda tough to see. Also, like the other stones, once it is looted there is a respawn time so it may be that someone looted before you got there. Keep looking and gl!
and after

when u give the 3 medalions, u receive the pheno focus.
pheno says :
"Phenocryst 's thoughts become your own, and a feeling of joy overwhelms you, 'Because of you, we can at last speak with our maker. We were once given a gift, and we ask that you accept this gift from us now so that we may come closer to that to which we owe our sentience. Now, we must construct the Menhir..'"
You gain party experience!!

After that, pheno and others geonids go outside the cave, and begin to construct the menhir

"Phenocryst begins to resonate again, commanding the geonids to come together and form the Menhir. Holding the Beryl, Stibnite, and Iron Crystals, the Phenocryst joins the other geonids as they form one huge structure. Immediately an intense buzz pierces the air, threatening to deafen you!
a geonid shaman heeds the command and joins to form the Menhir.
a geonid heeds the command and joins to form the Menhir.
a geonid heeds the command and joins to form the Menhir.
a geonid shaman heeds the command and joins to form the Menhir.
a geonid heeds the command and joins to form the Menhir.
a geonid heeds the command and joins to form the Menhir.
a geonid shaman heeds the command and joins to form the Menhir. "

And finally the other geonids disapear, and the menhir spawn :
"The Menhir 's resonation becomes dangerously intense. Cracks form along the stones like lightning across a sky. Smaller stones begin to crumble and fall to the ground as the earth begins to tremble. Something seems to have gone wrong; you decide you should leave the immediate area as quickly as possible"

after few minutes, he simply despawn...
The menhir is red to me at 51, I will ask a friend lvl59.
we have done the quest 4 time yesterday, now we have to wait to give others medaillon to pheno :)
