    You say, 'Hail, Keref Spiritspear'

Keref Spiritspear says 'Bark! Lo furless one. My people are Snowfang. Once mighty tribe, now snowfang home lost to vengeful winter.

    You say, 'What vengeful winter?'

Keref Spiritspear says 'Our tribe once many strong, then vengeful winter come. Tribe grow lost in storm of ice. Many moon, no food, no water, no home. Many snowfang die, many snowfang leave to find new home.

    You say, 'What new home?'

Keref Spiritspear says 'Many go north, not see again. Many family go, Keref family go. Aroooooooo. Someday Keref become brave, like mighty hero Groumshak. Keref go find pack to north.'

    You say, 'Who is Groumshak?'

Keref Spiritspear says 'Groumshak mighty snowfang hero. Groumshak make battle with furless one fifty paws high. When Groumshak return to tribe, vengeful winter fall. If you bring Keref mighty harpoon like Groumshak, then Keref become hero like Groumshak. Will give totem of great protection for thanks.'

To get the spear Keref Spiritspear wants, you need to talk to Grizlin Bloodfang in the Snow Fang camp. He asks you to bring him a Strong Wood (Runed Totem Staff), a Strong Bone (Whale Bone), and a Strong Rope (Tinkered Rope).

The Runed Totem Staff drops off gnolls on Antonica.

The Whale Bone is looted off sharks in Cobalt Scar.

For the Tinkered Rope, you must visit Ritap in Icelcad.

    You say, 'Hail Ritap'

Ritap says 'Avast you! Ya best be shoving off if ye knows whats good for you. We be pirate raiders and ya not be messing with the likes of us!'

Ratop says 'Squawk! Pieces of eight! Pieces of eight!'

Ritap says 'The cap'n said PIRATES! Not parrots ye knucklehead!'
He whacks the other raider upside the head. 'now whars the tinkered rope!?"

Ratop says 'We be out. Youll be needin to make more. Arg!'

    You say, 'What tinkered rope?'

Ritap says 'Batten down yer yapper! Ahl be doin the talking here. We be needin the rope to tie ye down fer ransom. Now fetch me the beard of a frost giant scout so's I can make some more rope to tie ye up with.'

Give Frost Giant Scout Beard to Ritap.

Ritap says 'Arg! By blubberbeards nostril! Ye'v done it!' He braids the beard together into a sturdy rope. 'Now take this here rope and tie yerself up! Come lets go tell the cap'n we've captured us some prisoners!'
    You gained experience!
Your faction standing with Pirates of Iceclad got better.

Give the rope, bone, and staff to Grizlin Bloodfang. In exchange you receive the spear desired by Keref. He may or may not at this point decide to attack you.

Bring the spear to Keref Spiritspear. You receive an Icy Totem of Protection as your reward. As was the case with Grizlin, Keref may get upset and attack you, so be prepared.

working this faction up now. so far the no trade Frost giant Scout Beard has come from both elites at the bridge and the wandering a_frost_giant_scout AND off the named Graktar Bluehammer. Ratop wont speak to you unless you are high amiable. Ritap will respond to the " what tinkered rope" line though.

    From the patch message 2002.01.23:
"In Iceclad, Keref Spiritspear won't be so unreasonable when you complete the task that he asks of you."

Apparently he will no longer attack you when finishing the quest.

We also got a Frost Giant Scout Beard off of a regular Frost Giant Scout in Iceclad last night.

The beards that drop off regular giants aren't the right ones . A named giant in IC (Ghelkar Bluehammer or something) dropped A Frost Giant Scout Beard -No Drop- for me yesterday.
    Awful

This quest isn't worth the time it takes to do it. The result is a no drop (shield) secondary melee slot item with stats worse than a charred guardian shield. At any level you would need save vs cold you would have an item with much better than +5.
In my opinion don't waste your time.

    # Aug 21 2001 at 1:00 PM Rating: Default
Soooo the beards needed drop off the elites in front of the EW bridge correct? Cause I have been slaughtering about 30-40 of these things with no beard yet. I dont even get CoV faction. It is almost a waste of my time. Please someone tell me if it 'is' the right giants I need to be killing. Thanks.

Killed the Giants all last night and I did acquire 1 frost giant scout beard (LORE MAGIC NODROP). It must be pretty rare because its the first I have seen of it and I have killed those giants for some time. I do agree with you that it is stupid that you dont get any faction for killing these guys, Verant must want you to take the risk of getting killed by not being so close to zone.

Why the heck do these quests have the quest giving NPC attack you? WTF was verant thinking?!?!? Did they WANT us to KNOW they are idiots, and can't opperate in the normal line of thinking?

Hey to all the scout giant beard doesnt actually pop on the scouts. It pops on the elites. Fairly regular. Poped 3 in a matter of two hours.

ok this item sucks if you want a easier quest for the secondary slot, and with more wis try out the ToV quest., unless you got 200 wis and are looking for easy mana however the ToV or CGS is alot better

The quest says "totem of great protection"...

OOOOoohhhhhhh.... +5 save versus cold. Hold me, I think I'm gonna faint just from looking at this item.

Who the hell they have designing this crap? Is this the most creative item they can create as a reward to a quest? Why don't they just take +5 save amulets and toss them out to the entire gaming populous. I'd say 98% of them would be destroyed out of hand as being worthless.

Let's start with the basics. Why would Ice Gnolls need cold protection? Ooopss... we forgot about our items actually having a real in-game context.

I feel sorry for the saps who solved this quest. I myself wasted a sorry-*** amount of time trying to figure it out (thinking that it might be for a neat shaman item). Can you imagine the let-down? Thank god people posted about it here so I don't have to waste any more time pursuing something so unfulfilling...

First of all, 50% of CS mobs are green to a level 51, which means they aren't higher than 40. Sharks, fishes, some sirens are around level 40, wyvern are 45ish and cobalt drakes a bit higher. The 2 toughest mobs I have seen there are Kelorek'Dar (CS dragon) and Yvolcarn (a 52 wyvern)
    Why??
    # Mar 20 2001 at 5:40 PM Rating: Default
I hate to *****, but....Why make this item second hand only? It's not a low level quest. I swear the Charred Guardian Shield must be way overpowered, and due a major nerf. The CGS has been farmed for heavily for the last 2 years. It costs about 450p on any server and can be attained about 10 levels before you could finish this quest. Why do I bring this up, cuz its a better item. If this was also primary hand or range slot, it would be a good, if not great quest. But as a secondary hand only item, its really a worthless quest :(
#Anonymous, Posted: Mar 21 2001 at 12:56 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Because VI likes to make sure that you spend large amounts of time killing green mobs looking for items for quests that end up being completely worthless. Just keep sending your $9.99 a month and they'll be sure to keep you busy. Not productively busy but busy never the less.

Nothing seemed to be broken for me. I gave the pirate a frost giant scout beard and he gave me tinkered rope (+2sta/str waist slot)

Gave the rope, runed totem staff, and whale bone to the gnoll and he have me a rune shafted harpoon. (when i gave him the quest items, he attacked me) 15/37 +5sta +10hps/mana/cold 7.5 weight. Magic, lore, no drop SHM/ALL primary or ranged slot

THen I gave the harpoon to the other gnoll and got an icy totem of protection. (same thing, when i turned it in, he attacked me)
    8ac +5wis +5cold +20 hps DRU,CLR,SHM 0.5 weight, secondary slot. Lore, magic, no drop

yeesh the answer was under me nose... just read the quest for the ice forged shackles, also given out by a gnoll.

in it he requires tigerraptor guts and a Strong Wood to make a fishing pole.

Guess what? the strong wood mentioned in that quest is actually a Holgresh loot in wakelands... they drop 4 type of staffs, not sure which will be the right one but i am pretty sure that what one gnoll calls strong wood, will most likely be what another gnoll of the same tribe calls strong wood.

grab yer frost giant scout beards, whale bones and lets finish this bloody quest

    # Feb 27 2001 at 8:45 PM Rating: Decent
It's already been confirmed that the wood you need is the Runed Totem Staff. We've been waiting since last December for Verant to get around to fixing the subquest of the frost giant scout beards. When you hand the beard to the gnome asking for it you get nothing in return. I sent a /bug report and an email 6 weeks ago and got no response. Until then we can't finish the quest.

    rope quest still broken
    # Feb 10 2001 at 11:12 AM Rating: Default
I just handed in a Frost Giant Scout Beard (nodrop) to Ritap. He said "thanks for the..." etc. I then handed in some fruit, just to see if the message was the same. It was - "thanks for the fruit...". So I killed Ritap, and when looting the corpse, I saw the fruit, but the beard had morphed into the Woven Frost Giant Beard (5 charges of Storm Strength, lore, not nodrop). Sounds like a bug to me.

By the way, Ritap is in the Iceclad pirates faction, but after killing him once, I'm still amiable to them.
    RE: rope quest still broken
    # Feb 15 2001 at 12:07 PM Rating: Default
Chances are it never morphed, someone had just handed in the Woven version before you. Nodrop items will never be on the corpse you give them to (would allow you to transfer an item to another player), so all that happened in this case he ate (rather than accepted) your two items and left the droppable one (plus a previous one) on the corpse.

    # Feb 08 2001 at 5:35 PM Rating: Default
I handed in the whalebone, the staff and the wire you can buy from the gnome. The bone and staff were acknowledged as being the necessary items, but not the wire. I've killed probably 50 giant scouts and never have gotten a beard to try to give to the gnome that asks you for it. Guess I'll go ahead and try the 100 ft of rope if I don't get a beard soon.
Little sea walrusses, at the gnolls?
    # Jan 31 2001 at 9:10 PM Rating: Default
Anyone else noticed the small sea walrusses that spawn on one of the iceshelfs near the Snowfang gnolls little village, where the snowfang spearhunters are standing? They spawn very often, on the same ice shelf where there are 4 gnolls, that beat them to death immediately after they spawn. They spawn about every 20 seconds, two of them in different spots on that ice shelf, very low hitpoints, they go down with one smack of the gnolls. I couldnt get a kill for meself so far, the gnolls are just too damn fast. I did however manage to target one of the gnolls during one of my tries, and give him a smack... I first noticed the sea walrusses on my tracking(and immediately disappearing again).
If you stand near those gnolls for a while, you will get some conversation too, like: a snowfang spear guard splashes with his club in the water to imitate the sounds of a fish. Couldnt get anyone of them to talk, although I didnt really interrogate the named Gnolls in the village about it.
I sure would like to get a kill in myself to see if these walruses drop a quest item maybe.

    Greetings, Grove Treesong.

Has anyone tried turning in a beard to the gnome since the latest patch? I've killed nearly 40 frost giant scouts since I turned in my first two beards and haven't been able to get another one to drop. If you've got a beard just sitting around please try it and let the rest of us know.

And if it doesn't work, file a /bug report so they get it fixed with the next patch.

Well Ritap says he needs the beard of a frost giant scout so I'm assuming he needs A Frost Giant Scout's Beard....the no drop one. But I did think like you and turned in first a Woven Frost Giant Beard then A Frost Giant Scout's Beard then another time both at once. I didn't even get a reply from Ritap. It's just broken...typical

Spine chill spear looks harpoonish. It is the rare drop of the Rygorr Chief in E Wastes. I have gotten 3 of them, but don't know if i want to risk losing a 7k item on the quest P).

If I give him the spear and it is not the item he wants can I kill him and get it back? I believe you could do this with the wurmslayer quest if u gave the scales to the wrong NPC by accident. Spear is NOT no drop btw.

    Groumshak
    # Jan 01 2001 at 11:27 AM Rating: Default
I believe the whalebone quest and this are separate. if you read what he says he tells you that Groumshak fought a furless one (human) 50 paws hgh - which i guess means a giant. Also, the Keref tribe moved NORTH - suggesting that Groumshak stayed down south - again where the giants live. I would be looking for a harpoon somewhere among the giants in the Eastern wastes or Kael - I dont know if there are any seafaring gaints anywhere
    No, ask...
    # Jan 03 2001 at 5:52 PM Rating: Default
Keref will say that he wants a "Mighty Harpoon" like Groumshak's--NOT the particular harpoon that actually belong(s/ed) to Groumshak.

Ask the other gnoll and he asks what Keref wants to make him happy, and he will make the harpoon for Keref out of whalebone, a RTS, and some form of rope that needs to be solved.

Well the gnome says bring ME a beard from a Frost Giant Scout. I didn't try giving one to the other. I think it's pretty clear this side quest is broken. Hopefully it actually IS part of the Keref quest and we aren't just spinning our wheels here. :) I'm personally going to go find myself another beard and a whale bone, and hope that the next patch includes a lot of quest fixes. Has anyone filed a /bug report on this? I'm anxious to see what a "totem of great protection" is. Let's all hope for an upgraded RBF :)

Also on a side note, I got the Frost Giant Scout Beard on the 2nd one I killed (magic, lore, no drop). Sounds like it isn't all that rare. But then, I got my first Cougar Claw Earring from the 2nd Snow Cougar I killed too, so who knows :)

That the Pirates are just a CLUE.

WHY would you give them the rope that they have said they'd tie you up with, and then expect a reward?

But, since the gnomes think the beard is a good rope, and only Groumshak, the great gnoll hero, fought giants, I'll bet that the gnoll weaponmaker doesn't know about the beards. So try giving HIM the beard next time and see if he thinks it's good.
