For an overview, schedule, and list of EverQuest Anniversary events, see this quest entry.

This is an anniversary shared task (1-6 players) introduced with EverQuest's 16th anniversary. It begins by picking up a "Flaming Sword of War" at the entrance stone to the Plane of War, in the Plane of Tranquility.

This task acts as a heroic adventure. Mob levels inside the instanced zone will vary according to the highest level player presently in the zone.

Pre-Requisites for Requesting:
- Level 75

A flaming sword has appeared near the portal to the Plane of War. Etched into the blade is a message, apparently from the weapon's creator, Buzoan, a minotaur elder. You should seek him out within the Plane of War.

Once you have the task, click on the normal Plane of War portal stone to zone into the instanced zone. Note: In this instanced zone, there are no locked areas.

Deliver the Flaming Sword of War to Buzoan the Elder 0/1 (Plane of War)

Task Window Says: Buzoan's message beckons you to seek him out in Castle Tamrel, in the Plane of War. Deliver the sword you found in the Plane of Tranquility to him.

Buzoan the Elder is found in the second-to-northeasternmost room of Castle Tamrel's main floor (this is the east castle from the Field of Strife). Either give him the sword, or say "get out" to update the task.

Buzoan the Elder says 'Quiet, mortal! They'll hear you! Oh, you must have discovered the sword! We must be wary of who's listening, if some here were to discover I've been [seeking] help outside the Plane of War, It would be my head on a pike for sure! The portal between War and Tranquility is beginning to weaken, and may soon fail. Were the realms of War and Tranquility to collide, it could tear asunder the the planes themselves, with unknown consequences for Norrath! If you don't feel up to this, and want to leave, just say the word and I'll send you to the [exit].'

You say, 'What are you seeking?'

Buzoan the Elder says 'Shhhh! You really must keep your voice down. I am surprised some don't already know. They're probably plotting to get rid of me already! I must [get out] of here so I can close the portal, and prevent War from spilling out into the other planes.'

You say, 'How can you get out?'

Buzoan the Elder says 'Gather a suit or armor for me, would you? I doubt I would survive any engagement with nothing to protect me but my hide! Most all of the mindless brutes around here should have something I can wear. Collect the pieces I require, and return to me, and we can get out of here!'

Skeletons at the zone in have been reported to drop all of the Rallosian armor pieces below.

Find a Rallosian breastplate for Buzoan to wear 0/1 (Plane of War)

Find a set of Rallosian arm plates for Buzoan 0/1 (Plane of War)

Retrieve a pair of Rallosian boots for Buzoan 0/1 (Plane of War)

Find a pair of Rallosian greaves for Buzoan 0/1 (Plane of War)

Retrieve a set of Rallosian bracers for Buzoan 0/1 (Plane of War)

Find a pair of Rallosian gauntlets for Buzoan 0/1 (Plane of War)

Task Window Says: Buzoan wants to escape to Tranquility, and close the portal to the Plane of War, but is fearful of trying to escape. You should collect a suit of armor for him to wear during the escape.

The above six items drop from random mobs in the Field of Strife (southern half of the zone). It is not confirmed whether they can drop in the northern half. They are confirmed from ogres, orcs, goblins, kobolds, minotaurs, and boars, and it appears that any mob type can drop all six items (random). Drops are not confirmed from ravagers.

NOTE: Mobs here have the same abilities as they do in the non-instanced version of the Plane of War. This means some will be much harder than others. Of particular note are berserkers, furies, and reavers which tend to hit for a max ~24,000 (or higher). If you fight a berserker or fury, watch out for their cast of "Counterattack" which ripostes all incoming attacks for a period of time. The easiest mobs in the zone are probably the boars.

Enchanter mobs haste, mana drain, and charm; healer types have strong heals and mitigation buffs; warders cast damage shields; minotaurs proc a feign death on people; reavers cast a hate's attraction spell (pull-to-caster) (this is not an exhaustive list of abilities).

Dispells are quite helpful here, as most mobs will be buffed with damage shields, attack increases, haste, and so forth.

Mob population DOES respawn.

Speak to Buzoan and tell him you've found the armor he needs 0/1 (Plane of War)

You say, 'Hail, Buzoan the Elder'

Buzoan the Elder says 'This armor is a bit beat up. Hopefully it will give me more protection than its previous owner, but I still don't think I can make it out of here just yet. If you could brew up some of my family's special ale, then maybe I'd take the chance. Do you think you can do that for me?'

Everyone receives "Recipe for Boastful Bellyfire Ale" and a "Brewing Barrel" (10-slot container). The recipe reads:

Secret!! Tell No One!!

Combine the following in a brewing barrel.
3 Spiced barley
3 Rallosian hops
Flask of Fire Water

For best flavor, let the brew age for 1 week.

Secret!! Tell No One!!

Brew a batch of Boastful Bellyfire Ale 0/1 (Plane of War)

Task Window Says: Though he has his armor, Buzoan is still fearful of leaving. A mug of powerful Boastful Bellyfire Ale should give him the courage he needs to make his way to Tranquility. Find the ingredients and brew up a batch!

"Spiced Barley" (need three) is found as ground spawns throughout the southeastern part of the Field of Strife. "Rallosian Hops" (need three) are found along the far western wall of the Field of Strife (northwestern part of the zone).

"Flask of Fire Water" (need one) is found as ground spawns on the second floor of Castle Tamrel (head up the stairs in Buzoan's room - flasks are in the south-center room of the second floor). They may be found elsewhere, but further locations are unknown (if any).

Combine the seven items in the "Brew Barrel".

Deliver the Boastful Bellyfire Ale to Buzoan 0/1 (Plane of War)

Task Window Says: Deliver the Boastful Bellyfire Ale to Buzoan. Do it quickly! This stuff smells awful!

TASK LOCKS HERE

Buzoan the Elder drinks the ale, rears back his head and roars, 'Ahhhh.. I can feel the ale working already. I feel like I can take on Rallos himself! If you're ready to [leave], we should make a run for it before the ale wears off! If you need me to [stop] for any reason, just say so.

Tell Buzoan it's time to make your escape 0/1 (Plane of War)

You say, 'Hail, Buzoan the Elder'

Buzoan the Elder says 'Ready to [leave] when you are. Just let me know when you're ready.'

You say, 'Let's leave...'

Buzoan the Elder says 'Follow me. I'll lead the way! If there is danger nearby, you can tell me to [stop] until it's clear, but we should [move] forward as quickly as safely possible. If you don't feel up to this, and want to leave, just say the word and I'll send you to the [exit].'

Say "stop", and he'll stop in his tracks... Say "move" (and "go", as he'll sometimes listen to instead), and he'll move along again... "Exit" will zone you out.

Buzoan the Elder says 'I'll lead the way. Let's go! If you don't feel up to this, and want to leave, just say the word and I'll send you to the [exit].'

Protect Buzoan as you escort him out of the Plane of War 0/1 (Plane of War)

You'll need to escort him to the zone-in. Standard mob population does not aggro him; however, you will have a few ambushes to deal with along the way.

Tell him to "move", "go", and "stop" as needed. First, he'll make his way out of Castle Tamrel. At its entrance, he'll be ambushed by 2x "a Tamrelian soldier". He'll then make his way through the Field of Strife until he is ambushed at its gate by 3x "a Hendin ambusher". Then, he'll proceed into the north field and be ambushed by 3x "a Gurrak ambusher".

He can survive these ambushes for some time on his own, but he'll need help. Buzoan can be healed and buffed with single-target player spells. He can die so keep him healed or let him regen in between pulls.

The ambush mobs tend to hit for a max ~15,500. Susceptibility to crowd control is not confirmed. All ambushers except for the Gurraks (orcs) cast standard warrior abilities for the zone (Quick Defense; Boisterousness; Bladewheel). The Gurraks have a large spell table (this list may sound more threatening than they actually are):

Arrowstorm: Targeted AE 60', Unresistable (0)
1: Decrease Hitpoints by 47693

Bladewheel: PB AE 100', Unresistable (0)
1: Decrease Hitpoints by 46154

3: Negate Chance to Avoid Melee Effect

Vicious Snare: Single Target, Magic (-950)

2: Negate Base Run Modifier Effect
3: Trigger Effect: Vicious Snare on Fade

At the zone-in, you'll encounter "Subcommander Gordash". He is permanently rooted in place and a relatively simple mob except for a significant rate of regeneration (about 3% of his health per tick). He also casts standard warrior-type spells for the zone (Quick Defense; Boisterousness; Bladewheel; and a 2-tick stun).

7x "Commemorative Coin"

Bonus Item:
Golden Helm of Rallos Zek
Awarded to a random player in the group who does NOT possess the helm already after the group has killed 74 creatures. This depends on which creatures you are killing. The following NPC's counts as 1 towards 74 per kill,

skellies near zoneline
ogres near zoneline
giants near zoneline
orcs near zoneline

Basically it looks like anything near the zoneline.

A red overlay text: "Bonus Objective: The Helm of Rallos Zek has been awarded to [Character]" will appear when the helm has been awarded to a player.
Prathun Developer posted that The function that grabs the list of the PCs in the zone does not grab mercenaries.

No need to hand in sword for bonus
# Mar 29 2022 at 3:46 PM Rating: Decent
I can confirm that to get the bonus helm all you have to do is kill 74 skellies at the zone in. Do not need to hand in the sword or anything else.
Just completed this in a 3 + 3 char/merc grp. Typically the helm went to the Mage and not to either of the 2 it would be useful for but now I know that I just need to rinse/repeat.

I was just barely able to solo Gordash on my 120 Beastlord, so its possible...but I wouldn't recommend it if you can avoid it. Admittedly, my DPS is trash and maybe other classes would have an easier time with it but if I were to do it again I would zone in an alt or two for extra DPS right before the task lock. I nearly gave up after getting him down to 1% and failing twice. Anyway, after 3 tries I got it. I got rid of my 2HB and switched back to dual wielding. Had to swap my cleric merc for DPS merc. Put pet into tank mode even though he was tanking fine in offensive mode but merc kept stealing aggro. Basically just burned through all my abilities and mana as fast as possible while trying to keep pet/merc alive with heals. Everything was exhausted by the time I dropped him.
My walkthrough with my group - smoked end boss too

Ok so let's start with my group

1. 115 Paladin, all T2.5 player made CoV, pretty much max aa
2. 115 druid same (all T2.5), prety much max aa
3. My paladin wizard merc which is maxxed
4. my druid wizard merc which is maxxed
5. my 101 alt paladin (who stood at zone in all the time)
6. my 98 alt enchanter (who stood at zone in all the time)

Step 1: Talking to Buzoan
*** In north, nothing can see invis except for the Patrollers and Guards at the gate (all the super tall people), but they were NON-Kos to me and my druid
So I invised up and ran past them
*** In the southern zone there is a mix of See Invis (non-kos) and See Invis (kos) and Cannot See Invis
Stay invised but pretty much just avoid anyone dressed in Red (The Tower of Zek looking guards)

Here is my list of Invis/Non/Kos and Cannot See Invis
See Invis KOS
--"A Gindan" reaver, berserker, champion, rager
--A Hendin reaver

See Invis Non-Kos
--Patrollers, Guards at the Doors in South Side
--A strife guardian
--Bozoan himself

Cannot See invis But is KOS
"A Tamrelian" Soldier, Scout, Mystic, Crusader, Vicar, Evoker, Centurion, Legionnaire, Machinist
An armored bloodtusk
"An iron" guardian, machinist, chief

NOTE: In the room for Bozoan, a see invis Rager will walk through and up the stairs and back down to the door. Avoid him as he will see you and attack.

Step 2: Making the Brew
*** FireWater ------ Can either be found in his room itself, or go up the stairs (avoid the Rager) and it will be in the room above him. It sorta looks like a white bag.. not so much a bottle
Please Note: This can be drunk... I did it so put it in a bag beyond your drinks

***Spicey Barely --Walk out of the Castle but do NOT walk down the ramp, just fall into the moat (it has no water atm). and go to the left. just follow it and you will find it no problem
***The Hops--------If you just got the barely just turn around and stay below the castle, run north and at the end in the opposite side of the exact same "moat" you will find the hops.
Please Note: the walk through says North West, but its North East. I ran the to the north west, through the field and avoided see invis mobs (almost) but found nothing

Step 3: Make the Brew
***this step is easy, I went back into his room and made it right there and handed it to him

Step 4: Walking with him in Multi-parts
A) I suggest you make 2 macros. 1. with /say Stop and 2. with (2) lines in it /say move /say go. just make sure to target him when you use them

B) Although he will not aggro the mobs, STAY Invised and follow him, becuase you sure as heck will aggro them and cause yourself a train. Use the same path you took in, you take out. Just remember to avoid the Rager in his room.. I didnt and it caused me to aggro like 5 mobs. I succored to the zone in and ran back and he was fighting the first 2 ambushing mobs. Not even close to dead so I killed them and we continued.

Part 1 (2 mobs)
C) The first 2 mobs attack in the room just before you exit, not actually outside. Just before they die make sure to tell him to Stop so he wont move. heal up, rebuffs and invis.

Part 2 (3 mobs)
D) When you are done killing the first 2 mobs, drop down into the rock ravine/moat where you dropped to get the Hops/Barely, because he will walk past all the see invis mobs. stay in the ravine area until you get to the end, then go up and avoid the see invis mobs. Go directly to the doorway/entrance to the south side, but stay on the north side. He will come there and the 3 mobs will attack him

Part 3 (3 mobs)
E) After killing the last 3 mobs, he will walk through the doors and turn left. he will walk like 20 feet, then turn right. immediately 3 mobs will attack. Make sure you are behind him, closer to the Ravine behind you, and not in front or you will aggro other mobs. Kill those 3 and then invis again

Part 4(The boss)
F) He will walk past everything and get to a spot that is about... 100 feet from the Skeletons you should kill to get the bonus. The boss will be about 40 feet in front of you.

My Boss Fight
--To be honest my paladin wasn't doing much. My mercs.. well they were doing a little but not a ton, until I clicked my Spires and all my cooldowns. However, what actually killed him (smoked him) was my druid and clicking his cool downs including Twincast, Natures Fury etc. His spell "Nature's Fervid Wrath Rk II", with maxxed Focus AA and during his cool down just obliterated him. He lived through one cycle of this spell, but by time I could refresh and cast it again, he was already down to 20% and then dead.

I can see though how people are not killing him fast enough. At first I didn't really dent him at all, without my druid I wouldn't have killed him.

BONUS Info
***Zone in. Go forward about 200 feet. On the right will be 3 skeletons. What I did to make sure I got the bonus on my paladin was to kick everyone out of my group and out of the task. once I killed 73 skeletons.. Took about an hour I think with just my paladin and caster merc, I got the helmet. I then re-invited and re-tasked added everyone.

At 101 I got about 5% total, at 115 I got a whole ability point LOL, but i was after the achievement anyway

Just a note. Tested this theory and you can only get one bonus item per quest. We killed a second batch of 73 skellies while in the same instance and didn't get a bonus item. Hopefully this will save someone some time on trying this. :)

There are only 3 of them, evokers or warriors, and they are a VERY fast respawn. You can get 73 kills to get the bonus update.

The final boss (subcommander) is easily tankable. He conned 108 tonight and I tanked him for 12 minutes on 110 SK before saying exit to zone out. I went in molo, and completed the whole quest up to the final boss. Used all of my offensive cooldowns and never got him below 96% health. I could have tanked him an hour but his health just would not go down. That guy regens incredibly fast and will take a decent group of 110's to kill. I am sure this was the intention to prevent people from soloing the task.

Interesting side note - You get to keep the brew barrel he gives you which is a 10 slot, no trade, portable brew station.

Did the quest 3x today.

First time killing 95%+ only boars: 128 til golden helm, then 138 til golden helm.

3rd time I killed only the 3 skellies by zoneline: 74 kills.

Roughly the same difficulty as the boars, easy enough being right next to the zoneline.

Zoned in with 3 + 3 mercs and camped Ogres at zone-in.

Killed about 20. Then turned in sword.
Killed about 15 more then had a death. Char ran back.

At 2 points, chars and mercs were changed out with other chars to zone in and buff.

In the end - helm was awarded on 74th kill to a char who didn't have helm, and didn't turn in sword.

Char who *did* turn in sword already had helm.

It took me 152 kills to get the helm today. Only 40 of those were after I turned in the sword for the first step -- the rest were before. It took around three and a half hours.

I did it solo, no one else in group, so there's no way anyone was zoning in or out of anywhere. I didn't die, didn't even go below 25% health, or feign death. And I didn't use a pet or a merc, to make sure they couldn't die either.

There must be some other hidden requirement -- maybe points, or time limits between kills, or somesuch.

Meanwhile, full groups with decent dps report getting one in anywhere from 60 to 69 kills.

143 kills last night. I started killing in the corner by the broken sentinel statue, and after 100ish kills moved to the trench, but don't think it made any difference. There were a couple dark blue messages in my spam window that seemed to indicate progress.

"The eye watches."
"Your fury rises!"

Ok, did this a 3rd time, instead doing giants, ogres, and orcs at the front of the zone. 74 kills later got the helm. There must be a point basis built into the objective somewhere, and boars are at the bottom of the scale.

--- EDIT: Got Helm
As mentioned below, at quest steps to get armor, I went to zone-in and killed giants. They do drop armor, as do the Fallen Warrior skeletons nearby.

After exactly 73 kills, a red overlay text appeared: "Bonus Objective: The Helm of Rallos Zek has been awarded to [Character]". No indication I could find appeared in the logs of this, not that text nor anything else around taht time-period.

And the helm appeared on that character's cursor.

Additionally, Buzoan can definitely die, no health locked. He can be healed. But has a great regen so even a brief pause after a fight is enough to get back to 100%

I tried this a few times, learning little things along the way, but I could not finish it due to too little DPS for final battle. 105 druid (max AA), 105 enc, and 105 mage with 3 merc was not even close to enough DPS.

1. There a two Fire Water ground spawns in the same room as Buzoan the Elder, no need to go up to 2nd floor
2. If he dies you need to re-start
3. He gets agro when he triggers the ambush, was not able to mezz the first two ambushes, but was for the 3rd.
4. If you mezz them and mem blur the mobs (3rd fight), then they won't attack Buzoan if you die while trying to kill the ambush mobs. Take the urgency out of running back.
5. To get Buzoan to move the first time you have to say "leave", after that you say "move". I had to say "move" twice if I was invis.
6. Tell Buzoan "stop" as soon as there is an ambush, that way he won't wander into another battle if you are trying to do a corpse recovery run. This was very helpful between the 1st and 2nd ambush as he walked thru mobs that did not agro him, but they saw thru invis and agro onto me, and I wiped. Since he was stopped, he did not move onto the 2nd ambush while I was trying to get back into zone.

HUGE waste of time. Find yourself an uber group (no merc) if you are going to try this.

They messed up the task schedule as usual on test, so this task is no longer available on test. :( It's been canceled a full month early.

Buzoan the Elder is a hearty creature and regenerates health quickly, but what some wondered: Yes, he needs to live.
If you die at the start of an ambush (wiped at beginning of 3rd ambush, all three still up) you will come back to no Buzoan.
If you wipe and he lives he will keep moving, so unless (even if) it was the 4th ambush run back fast!

He did not respawn (I did not expect him to). Not at the start point, not on track from center of zone.
And with that you no longer have Buzoan to complete the last two steps. If he dies you drop the task and start over.

Suggest binding in Plane of Tranquility somewhere near Plane of War.

with out anyone in your group to include mercs, get the task and zone in. sit there for 45-50 minutes and it will appear on your cursor. no killing, no looting, no hailing, no turn ins. it's that simple.

Looks like it's been fixed. I have 2 characters, each in an instance. Neither has a merc. I've been here a couple hours and nada. Time to toughen up.

I tried this today... doesn't work. Or do I have to do the very 1st step inside?

Confirmed, not sure if this is how it is intended to be done though.
After the patch

Ran this mission on 29-March, after the patch.

Talked to the minotaur then camped in the SE corner killing boars. Seemed to drop armor quickly, until we found that it was duplicating pieces. We found at couple dozen duplicate pieces (chests, arms and boots mostly) before the bracer finally dropped to finish our set. Took about 1:15m into the mission to get the last piece. Bonus: the boars do give 1 pt of Castle Rulnavis faction just like in the normal zone. Only one of our party got a random helm.

Comments before the patch say "after the last hail, click the firewater to get extra helms." We tried this after the patch, having finished the last hail. Everyone who clicked the firewater just drank it. No reward. Either we tried it too late, or the firewater click doesn't work anymore post-patch. But, another bonus seems to be that the quest gives you a free 10-slot brew barrel. It's listed as NOTRADE, but seems to be permanent and functions as a normal brew barrel.

Did this for bonus reward today. Seems a bit buggy. While clearing for the armour parts one char got a red text print on screen with message Golden Helm of Rallos Zek was rewarded to *ERROR*. After that while still on armour parts step one char ran off and picked up flasks. On first click, nothing. Some red text appeared on screen. Second click both my chars got golden helm. Didnt bother to finish task.

Can confirm this to be true.

2 of my toons were randomly awarded the helm, then my bard and shammy BOTH got "ERROR" on first click of flash, and helm on 2nd. Did 1 toon before the final hail and recieved, and then the other after final hail and recieved. Both worked.

Good Luck,
