This quest begins with Umvera Dekash in South Qeynos. He's in The Herb Jar (around the corner from the bank in South Qeynos). He may also spawn in Crow's Tavern in North Qeynos, but this is not confirmed.

You say, 'Hail, Umvera Dekash'

Umvera Dekash says 'What, _____? Do I look like a merchant to you? Just because all these merchants are in my library, it doesn't mean that I am one. If you are interested in something other than spell scrolls, then, we can talk.'

You say, 'I am interested in something other than spell scrolls'

Umvera Dekash says 'Ah, so you do have half a wit about you! Very well. As you can clearly see, I am the librarian here. I keep track of all of the mystic tomes that enter this divine building. I also take care of all of the purchasing. Have you something to offer?'

You say, 'I have something to offer'

Umvera Dekash says 'Excellent! You have no idea how difficult it is to get good help these days. Do you think you would have the time to gather some information for me?'

You say, 'I have the time to gather information for you'

Umvera Dekash says 'Even better! Well, it has been some time since the Tesch Val gnolls moved in on the Split Paw. That being said, we still know little to nothing of their origins. If you can bring me back the four scrolls that our diviners speak of, I believe I can reward you well.'

Head to South Karana and collect four different Tanned Split Paw Skin scrolls. These are LORE items and look like rolled up scrolls. When you right click you can read the message written on them if you are fluent in gnoll. But even those unversed in gnoll can notice the number on the page. Collect scroll Volume 1, 2, 3, and 4, and return them to Umvera in Qeynos:

Umvera Dekash says 'Did I not ask for FOUR scrolls? What are you? Some kind of idiot?

Umvera Dekash says 'Did I not ask for FOUR scrolls? What are you? Some kind of idiot?

Umvera Dekash says 'Did I not ask for FOUR scrolls? What are you? Some kind of idiot?

Umvera Dekash says 'It's about time. Let's see here. Right.. right.. right. Very good. Right. There you are! I translated the text. Now the scrolls need to be bound. Take these scrolls to Jheron Felkis in Freeport. I believe he is staying in one of the spare rooms in Velith and Bardo's establishment. He will ensure they are bound correctly. Return to me when the binding is complete.'

Receive Tesch Val Compilation from Umvera and then travel to East Freeport.

Jheron Felkis is located in East Freeport in the building "Velith and Bardo's" (third floor; you can CTRL+F Find "Innkeep Rastle" and go upstairs in the building the Innkeep is in). Hand him the compilation.

You say, 'Hail, Jheron Felkis'

Jheron Felkis says 'Ah, greetings, traveler! Settled into one of these rooms, have you? Well, this room is mine, so get out! Hey, wait! You aren't here to deliver a shipment of books to me, are you?'

You say, 'What shipment of books?'

Jheron Felkis says 'Oh, I typically receive monthly shipments of books from Umvera Dekash. I hear he has recently been promoted to senior librarian in Erudin. What a vaulted position! I could only aspire. I'm not going to be binding books forever, you know!

Jheron Felkis says 'So you are from Umvera! What is this? Oh my! Interesting! I'll bind them right away! A little snip here..a little snip there.. All done! That didn't take long, did it? I won't be doing this forever, you know. After the milita burned down my father's home, he could not afford to send me through proper schooling. Ah well, such is life!'

You receive a Pawbook. You can open it up and read it (8 pages of text). Take this back to Umvera in Qeynos.

Umvera Dekash says 'You have returned safely. That is wonderful! Where the heck is my book, child? In my hands, I see. Such a bright little twinkle you are! Well, let me scribble something down on this pad here. There you are. Take this note to Durkis Battlemore in the Butcherblock Mountains. He is a remarkable smith, but more importantly, he owes me for his smithing books.'

Durkis Battlemore is in the Butcherblock Mountains inside one of the guard buildings: location 2072, 400 (on the path leading from the dock, just before Kaladim).

You say, 'Hail, Durkis Battlemore'

Durkis Battlemore says 'What have ye got there, lad? Ack. I thought I would never hear from that crazy old man again. He wants me to give you a pair o' me gauntlets. I suppose I kin do that. Here you are, Southern. Wear them in good health.'

You receive Gem Inlaid Gauntlets.

The gnolls are in South Karana at the spires near the center of the zone, approx -3000, +700.

I thought this was a pretty easy quest at level 25 or so (cleric), Can't remember exactly when I did it) the tough part was getting around. I was lucky enough to have a bored porting guild member online at the time, so it actually only took me about 15 minutes once I got to Qeynos. (we both bound ourselves in NQ instead of porting back to NK) sold em for 100P to a guild member, so I figure I can sell the next pair for around 150-200. I already have the 4 scrolls again so it's just a matter of when I feel like wandering back to Qeynos. (I get lazy sometimes and don't like making the long run he eh)

I'm a level 25 Monk, and I just finished this quest. I got the scrolls from experience killing at the spires in SK. The odd thing I have noticed, though, is that my AC went up by 13, not 8. If they had an AGI bonus I could understand that, but they don't. Can anyone explain this?

Not too difficult a quest to do, for sure. I don't know why they'd sell for 250pp when it's such an easy quest to do. Perhaps I'll get a second pair when I'm back in SK working on my Red Headband.

The AC listed on the gauntlets is known as "raw AC". The way the system calculates your character's AC is by taking the raw AC of the item in question and adjusting it based on your class, race (if you are an Iksar, for example), level and so on. Some of the class-specific formulas are actually quite complicated.
not so hard

This is easy for a lvl 24+ wiz to do. All you have to do is wait in SK (i pasted the time killing birds) and keep shouting that your looking for scolls. In about 2 hours i had all 4 and was on my way to Qeynos (just TP to WK and run west and that will put you right in the hills). When I got there i bound myself at the gates, and droped off my skins to Umvera. Then TPed over to NRo and ran into Freeport. It took me awhile to find Jheron there but once i gave him the book, i gated back to Qeynos (if you bind in Qeynos you won't have to run all the way back through WK). I gave Umvera back the book, got the note, and then it was off to GFay. To find Durkis Battlemore, just run into butcher and follow the path to the right when it splits, continue past Kaladim. Once you pass Kaldim, he will be in the back of the 1st guard tower. Give him the note and you will be handed your very own pair of gem inlaid gauntlet (8ac. +3dex. +3sta). This is a pritty simple quest and only takes about 3-4 hours to do. Another plus is that these sell for about 250pp, so you can just run to GFaymart to sell them. Oh well, thats my story. Peace out

it's very easy for druids with the new surefall glade port... very nice just a short walk to quenos a port to wc back to quenos then on to BB very easy quest for the reward(I think when they made this quest they expected you to run the whole way heh) nice quest sold a pair for 200pp and another I gave to twink my ranger hardest part for me was getting the 4th scroll BOTH times I had scrolls 1-3 within the first 6kills, i had to auction for the 4th after about 30 kills no 4th
well good luck

OK, being a large race melee class that has completed this quest repeatedly, I can tell y'all that ya need no shrink or wolf form to do it. First stick the note on your cursor then tease a bat and trot on over to the back of Durkis' hut. Keep a little distance so he doesn't kill the bat through the wall, and then run like heck behind him and trade. Pathing will ***** you over if you're not reasonably quick, but it beats annoying the zone with shouts of "Shrink or Wolf Form plz" that's for dang sure. :P

i have gotton the quest done 3 times in a matter of 2 and a half hours. my second and 3rd time i just did a OOC and bought the scrolls for 40pp for all 4. so all in all i made a VERY easy 920pp :) but be warned, the quest is easy if ya can gate or port, otherwise leg power is the key, oh yeah..... and lots of time. so if so many people can do this quest that fast then how can this be a RARE item......i guess it can only happen on EQ. welcome to the world of EQ..lol

Make sure you give Umvera Dekash all four scrolls AT THE SAME TIME... I was being cautious making sure my faction was high enough, and he yelled at me for being an idiot, and I now get to go regain Volume 4 of the scrolls... You've been warned!

Ok I have my own warning for about this quest. If you are going to do this quest more then once, make sure that you do not have the lore item on your character..and yeah this means even in the bank...This item will not duplicate...
I did learn a lesson...Lore Item = only one = :(

I spent 3 or 4 hours today killing every gnoll between zone in and ishva. I got plenty of 2, 3 and 4. Never got a 1.

Does it only drop outside? Couldn't try killing outdoor gnolls because all the level 20s would have been miffed.

For some reason, most people get 3 out of the 4 really quickly, and then take forever getting the fourth one. Don't know if it's coincidence or the game's actually designed that way. Reminds me of when I was camping the fingered skeleton in Kurn's for the Shackle of Rock, got three different fingers in just three spawns, but waited literally days to get the 4inch finger.

Anyway, I got volumes 1,3, and 4 pretty quickly inside, took about two hours before volume 2 finally dropped inside; until then, every scroll that dropped was one I already had! But any Tesch Mas Gnoll can drop any volume, either in South Karana or Splitpaw. They're easier to hunt in SK, but are usually already camped. So take your pick, either inside or outside, you can get all four. It just takes some patience getting the last one.

I stayed outside the whole time while i was there and all 4 drop outside. Middle spire is the fastest spawn if your gonna go solo them.

Get the scrolls and do parts one and two. Go back get the scrolls, do parts one. Go back get the scrolls. Now you have potentially three sets to quest and sell. Make mega-bucks in a couple hours.
Binding the book?

I went to the guy in EFP and am trying to figure out how to get him to bind the book. What do I say to him to get it bound? Or do I just give him the book that I got from Qeynos?

Just hail him, to make sure you have attention, and give him the unbound book. He'll bind the book for you and give it back. Now you can take the bound book back to Umvera, he'll give you a note to give to Durkin Battlemore in Butcherblock for your gloves. Durkin's not on a faction technically, but will regard you the same way Storm Guard regards you, so if you're not KOS to the dwarf guards in Butcherblock, you won't be KOS to him. If you are, just kill a lot of goblins in Runnyeye, worked for me.

The note to Battlemore is No Drop. He is in a building with small doors, so if ye are playin a large race (Barbarian, Ogre, or Troll) ye wont be able to get in and give him the note, and will have wasted yer time and effort. The note to Battlemore is the only part of the quest that is No Drop.

If you are a barbarian (or other tall race), and you don't want to waste an Ant potion, here is my trick: Slap a bat or other mob (once with the weakest weapon or spell you have). Slowly walk towards the back of the building that Durkis is inside. Durkis won't be able to hold back his anger at the bat (or other critter trying to slap you back) and leap out through the side of the building. At that point, quickly hand the note to Durkis as he walks back to his hut. Practice a few times to get the timing just right.

Hmm. Vision, I ought to try that too next time. I don't think that I ever used that spell.

When I first talked to the Erudite, his didn't reply with any phrase in [braces]. But I replied with what I thought he was interested in, and it worked! (He actually complimented me on my intelligence!).

However I've since read you can just give him the scrolls, which I will do in future, cos I just don't like talking to him. Typical Erudite, snooty as hell!

Well I did this quest. Took me a hile to find this after destroying a lot of scrolls mistakingly. By the time I learned the error of my ways, I still couldn't find scoll 2. My packrat friend had it and gave it to me. Then I commenced to hoofing it all throughout the contenent. Took me about 5 hours to hoof it across 3 times with the occasional sow here and there. I like the gloves but I am wanting to trade them in for crafted. What is the going price? On the server someone told me 100-150 and I read on a post it was 350 can someone give me a concise answer please

EVERY price varies on EVERY server. go to your local hot spot for trades and selling. Like tunnel, or market bazzare... or what not and just give a shout for a PRICE CHECK. most people are happy to give you a correct estimate on your server. Besides, think this way. Yours may be more OR less valuable. but to someone else, even if your item is worth less, it might be worth MORE to them... the right person. :)

This quest is pretty nice. It enabled you to get a nice item that is worth about 250p.
I did this quest when I was level 24. I got two of the scrolls from killing Gnolls in Spires of South Karana and the other two I bought from other players for 5p each. I obtained all four pretty quickly, since almost every Gnoll there carries a scroll. After obtaining the scrolls I just teleported to North Karana, ran to Qeynos, gave them to the librarian, bound myself near him, teleported to West Commons, ran to Freeport, gave the batch of scrolls at East Freeport, Gated back to the Librarian, obtained the letter, teleported to BB and gave the letter to the Dwarf guard. Pretty easy, only takes a while, even if you're a wizard or druid that can teleport. The gloves are nice to be sold, I assume monks will want them too, since it will allow them to hit magical creatures while having nice AC and Sta buff to increase their hp a bit.
Excellent Quest

This quest is great, for various reasons: First u can do it since your low 20´s grouping at the spires in SK, Second: Spires are normally camped but getting in a group isn´t real hard since the exp is raised for groups, especially full ones, Third: Most of the people hunting at the spires is looking for exp and fine steel weapons or split paw armor for loot, they dont care about the tanned skin rolls, Fourth: if u can port (I´m a druid) u can do the trips between SK, NQ, Freeport and BB real quick; and the Main Reason: The gauntlets will give u more plats u ever have seen togheter before at that lvl, they can de sold for 350 pp or more, or traded for very expensive items. I have done the quest twice, in the first one i trade the gauntlets and some pieces of Split paw armor for 2 Platinum Japer rings (+6 wis each, extraordinary for a druid) and in the second one for a Bracer of Scanvenging with i sold after for 375 pp (can be sold for more, average price is 460 pp) only 10 minutes after i got it. Before that i have only sold armor pieces for max 20 pp and getting money was hard, now i have secured the money for all my new 29 spells and can buy some nice +wis items too, and I´m only 27.
Not So Hard

I got all 4 of the scrolls in like 15 minutes (im lvl 30 Erudite Wiz. Then I just ported to tox and handed them in and ported around and did the whole quest- all in all took me like an hour, w/o ANY ports it may have taken around 5-7 im guessing as its alot of running to do...
Druids & Wizzies Can make some nice pp.
# Apr 09 2001 at 2:48 PM Rating: Default
Druids and Wizzies can make some major bank with this quest. With our ability to port where we want to we can do this quest with great ease. If you are hunting the gnolls at the spires in SK you can do this quest and get about 300pp every day almost. You could also just buy the skins off of people for about 20pp/skin (thats what I offer). So if you want some extra pp just do this quest and you can make a ton of money in a short time.

this quest can, and has, been farmed very easily. At lvl 25, myself (a monk), and my lvl 19 druid friend camped this quest one day and got 9 or 10 pair. While i killed the splitpaws, he ran the skins back and grabbed the book. He then ported himself around to the various places. We started churning in a pair about every 30 mins or so, but if you have no porter :( then this could very easily take 4 hours.
