The Darkened Sea Info & Guides: Overview | Progression & Task List | Raiding | Visible Armor This solo task begins with Captain Mewes (click for map image), located on the deck of the boat docked in the Combine Dredge. Pre-Requisites for Requesting: - Minimum Level 95 Say "hamper" to request the task. You say, 'Hail, Captain Mewes' Captain Mewes says 'Shhhhhhh. Don't let [them] see you talking to me.' You say, 'Who is 'them'?' Captain Mewes says 'Those horrible Doomscale. They do such dreadful things to me, but I can [explain] later. I have some [tasks] for you if you want to help me stick a [wrench] in their work, but you can't let them know I sent you. If you are in a hurry and don't want to hear me prattle on, I need you to [disrupt] their rest, [slow] their mining, and [hamper] their research.' You say, 'I'll hamper their research...' Captain Mewes says 'Yes. I don't know what they are doing, but they are such terrible people that we need to do what we can to hinder their work. I have written the initial plans in your journal. We will see if we need to do more once you bring me the research. Do you need more [information]?' You have been assigned the task 'Research Wrecks'. Captain Mewes is not happy about his treatment. He wants you to complete tasks to disrupt the Doomscale and Combine efforts. For this task he wants you to hamper their research progress. You say, 'Give me more information, now' Captain Mewes says 'So you'll travel to the [main platform]. Once inside, collect research [papers], set fire to the [bookshelves] with the [magical torch], and kill Combine [casters].' You say, 'Where is the main platform?' Captain Mewes says 'Go west off the docks. The platform is right there.' You say, 'What papers?' Captain Mewes says 'They should be easy to find. They are constantly working on them.' You say, 'What bookshelves?' Captain Mewes says 'Yeah. You know. Bookshelves. Shelves... that have books on them. Sorry. That was uncalled for. Just... my fear sometimes brings out my snarky side. Only destroy shelves on the bottom floor.' You say, 'What agical torch?' Captain Mewes says 'Just like all of the supplies, I do not have an unlimited amount. But if you need more, just ask me.' You say, 'What casters?' Captain Mewes says 'Their names are highly variable, but they should be in blue robes.' 
Enter the main platform 0/1 (Combine Dredge) Location update around 680, -665, 40 (this is the southernmost spiral tower, due north of the dock). Collect research papers 0/5 (Combine Dredge) "Geomantic Research Notes" are ground spawns on tables in the area. There are many of them, appearing as small scrolls on tables. Set fire to bookshelves on the bottom floor 0/5 (Combine Dredge) Get close to bookshelves and right-click the "Magical Torch". Repeat for five total. Kill any Combine casters that you find 0/4 (Combine Dredge) Kill any four mobs with "indagator" or "indagatrix" in their name. Deliver research papers to Captain Mewes 0/5 (Combine Dredge) Give Captain Mewes a moment to skim the papers 0/1 (Combine Dredge) Stand next to him until this updates. Make your way to the far east mining machine 0/1 (Combine Dredge) Location update around 1280, -3010, -30 (this is the far eastern tip of the island). Set a bomb at the base of the platform 0/1 (Combine Dredge) Get near a geomantic device and use the "Self Hiding Bomb" (received from Captain Mewes). Make your way to the far north mining machine 0/1 (Combine Dredge) Location update around 2400, -1490, -30 (the far northeastern tip of the island). Set a bomb at the base of the platform 0/1 (Combine Dredge) Same as above. Make your way to the far west mining machine 0/1 (Combine Dredge) Location update around 2250, 1740, -30 (the far northwestern tip of the island). Set a bomb at the base of the platform 0/1 (Combine Dredge) Same as above. Kill Doomscale and Combine 0/25 (Combine Dredge) Kill any 25 mobs with "Doomscale", "praetor", "perfidus", "vicarum", "indagator", or "indagatrix" in their names. Return to Captain Mewes with news of your success 0/1 (Combine Dredge) Rewards: Experience 187 platinum, 5 gold | |

Don't click the same bookcase twice since the torch vanishes after 5 clicks. I don't know about getting another torch since I never needed to.
Unlike bombing the kilns in the other mission there is no time delay in RE-torching a bookcase. So the best way for a group to do this is clear a room and then each player torch 5 bookcases one after another. Each room has about 7 so once you've cleared, it's easy. Invis drops, of course, since torching is basically a spellcast, so you do need to get the room mobs out of the way.
Setting the bombs for the mining machines. The quest-giver warns you he won't give out more if you mess up the placement so I took this rather seriously. The best spot is right under the machine, at ground level, about where you get the update for "making your way" there. There is usually a mob right there, four around the "legs" and one on the platform. Plus there's a praetor guard mob who wanders all the path way and stops right here too. First time I killed them all to make room. Then I discovered it's easier to snare away the static and the wanderer who stop right where you want to plant the bomb. Then each group member can do his bomb clicky right there. You will probably get delayed agro but either get Coh'd to safety, evac or use some fade technique. These bombs don't damage you.
As stated in my posts for the other quests from this quest-giver, get them all at once and bring them all up to the last "KIll ### mobs" step so you can make a lot of your kills do triple-duty.

OK i set 4/5 fires in bookcases and lost my torch, The Capt. doesn't seem to want to give me another torch, I must have clicked the same book case twice. Am I able to get a new torch or have to start all over like when I clicked a bomb twice? Dang it... Need another magical torch

OK when you say "magical torch" to him he tells you he doesn't have an unlimited supply, but if I need more just ask him, but......nothing I tried to say made him give me one. This task is too long to do again from the beginning. sigh
