This solo task begins with Captain Mewes (click for map image), located on the deck of the boat docked in the Combine Dredge.

Pre-Requisites for Requesting:
- Minimum Level 95

Say "slow" to request the task.

You say, 'Hail, Captain Mewes'

Captain Mewes says 'Shhhhhhh. Don't let [them] see you talking to me.'

You say, 'Who is 'them'?'

Captain Mewes says 'Those horrible Doomscale. They do such dreadful things to me, but I can [explain] later. I have some [tasks] for you if you want to help me stick a [wrench] in their work, but you can't let them know I sent you. If you are in a hurry and don't want to hear me prattle on, I need you to [disrupt] their rest, [slow] their mining, and [hamper] their research.'

You say, 'A wrench?'

Captain Mewes says 'I have some subtle sabotage [tasks] for you. ...Okay, they're not that subtle at all. I just hope she won't make me do those [horrible] things if her attention is drawn elsewhere.'

You say, 'What tasks?'

Captain Mewes says 'I would like to disrupt their [rest], slow their [mining], and hamper their [research]. Will you help me?'

You say, 'What about the mining?'

Captain Mewes says 'The Combine used this area as a mining platform ages ago. They recently started using it again shortly before Lanys and her toadies came and forcefully took it over. It was [awful]. While Lanys allows them most of the product of the mining, she takes some and has them working on some [other] task. But enough prattling on. I need you to [slow] their mining with some judicious sabotage.'

You say, 'What was awful?'

Captain Mewes says 'The Combine attacked everyone on the boat, but they were not prepared for Lanys and the Doomscale. It was a slaughter. Ten members of the Combine were slain for every Doomscale that fell. And it was a sight to behold when Lanys defeated half of the Combine single-handedly.'

You say, 'I'll slow them down...'

Captain Mewes says 'Thank you. I have written what you need to do in your journal, but if you like I can tell you more about the [sabotage].'

You have been assigned the task 'Undermining the Mining'.

Captain Mewes is not happy about his treatment. He wants you to complete tasks to disrupt the Doomscale and Combine efforts. For this task he wants you to hamper their ability to process ore.

You say, 'Tell me about the sabotage'

Captain Mewes says 'Go to the [rock quarry] and destroy some of the [elementari] and [operari] there. Afterwards, move on to the [ore processing platform] and make your way inside. At the top, you will find some of the operari processing ore. Destroy some of them, and damage a few of the ore processing kilns by putting a [heat resistant] explosive from the bundle inside. If you lose the [bundle], come back to me and tell me. I will give you another. Please don't waste them as I have a difficult time getting them. When you are done, kill a few [Doomscale] on your way back to me.'

You say, 'Where is the rock quarry?'

Captain Mewes says 'The rock quarry is to the northeast. Take the north path between the two exits from the dock. Pass under the housing platform and take the northeastern path past it. Stay to the left, and when you reach a dead end, activate the geomantic elevator to raise some of the seabed to cross over to the quarry.'

You say, 'What are the elementari?'

Captain Mewes says 'The elementari are three-legged abominations of rock, created by the geomancers. You'll find most of them at the quarry.'

You say, 'What are the operari?'

Captain Mewes says 'The operari are golem like creatures created by the Combine as laborers. They do not create them here, but replacements are shipped in from time to time.'

You say, 'Where is the ore processing platform?'

Captain Mewes says 'The ore processing platform is west of the quarry. Take the west path out of the quarry and it will lead you right to it.'

You say, 'What is this heat resistant thing?'

Captain Mewes says 'The explosive is in a heat-resistant wrapper. Note that I said heat-resistant, not heatproof. After about five seconds the heat-resistant wrapper will burn away in the kiln, and the contents will explode. Though this explosion is small, you should step away from the kiln to avoid being injured. Also, the operari are very resilient and will not be damaged by this explosion, though you're likely to have already fought them in order to gain access to the kiln.'

You say, 'What bundle are you talking about?'

Captain Mewes says 'Look. I appreciate your help, but you already have a bundle of explosives. I'm not responsible if you left it in a bank, somewhere else, or you misplaced it in your copious bags. I can't afford to give you another if you already have one.'

You say, 'What about the Doomscale?'

Captain Mewes says 'I don't care which Doomscale you kill, as long as you make Lanys' life difficult by doing so.'

Make your way to the rock quarry 0/1 (Combine Dredge)

Location update at about /loc 1540, -1150, -30 (the quarry is a large area in the northeastern part of the zone).

Kill elementari and operari 0/6 (Combine Dredge)

Kill six mobs with "elementari" or "operari" in their names.

Make your way to the ore processing platform 0/1 (Combine Dredge)

Location update at about /loc 1380, -470, 40 (this is the northernmost of the spiral towers).

Kill operari 0/2 (Combine Dredge)

Kill two mobs with "operari" in their names.

Sabotage the ore processing kilns 0/5 (Combine Dredge)

Use the "Fire Resistant Explosive Bundle" (received at the beginning of the task) near kilns (kilns are located in each room of the top floor of this tower). This causes an explosion, so move away from it after you set it.

Kill 20 Doomscales 0/20 (Combine Dredge)

Kill any 20 "Doomscale" mobs.

Report success to Captain Mewes 0/1 (Combine Dredge)

Bombs do about 32k damage, if not resisted, and drop your invis. Each room has 2-3 regular spawns and usually 1 see-invis spawn. Sometimes they're also the kind of mob you can't see without being SeeInvis-2 capable yourself, which means using a ranger or druid vision buff or relying on Aspect of Zomm. The kilns reset with about the same timer as zone spawns. Altho the idea below about evacing to re-set the zone timers is interesting. If true the timers on the kilns are player/group-dependent, rather than tied to the zone. My strat was to have one toon pull the whole room, run the denizens outside a distance and then drop agro. While they wandered back another toon went into the room to set the bombs and get the flags.

Be sure to have the other two tasks from this quest-giver active at the same time and get all steps done in all 3 up to the "Kill so many XXXXX" steps. There is a lot of overlap in the mob types so you can probably get close to triple-credit for the kills, assuming you're at that stage in all 3 missions.

Kiln destroying

You can just clear one room if you can evac/ zone. Zoning clears the memory so that you can blow up the same kilns more than once.
Avoiding explosions

Clear one of the top rooms. The kilns look like giant pizza ovens (to me anyway). Click your explosive pack and a barrel bomb drops at your feet. Back away, to the door of the room is far enough. When the bomb disappears, it's safe to set the second one. Then move to the next room. Looks like you need 3 rooms cleared with 2 kilns in each.
