The Darkened Sea Info & Guides: Overview | Progression & Task List | Raiding | Visible Armor

This solo task begins with Damton Silverhammer (click for map image), located at the zone-in of Degmar, the Lost Castle.

    Pre-Requisites for Requesting:
    - Minimum Level 95
    - No tasks

Say "resolve" to request the task.

    You say, 'Hail, Damton Silverhammer'

Damton Silverhammer says 'Salutations, _____ You look like the adventuring type and I wager you'd like work. I can use help gathering [supplies] and seeing if we can overturn my [banishment]. If you are the more conversational type, I can also tell you a little about Degmar's [Castle].'

You say, 'Tell me about this Castle'

Damton Silverhammer says 'Three to five centuries ago, long before I was born, this castle and everyone inside were transported from the edge of Faydark to this underwater tomb. To protect Degmar from the pressure of the sea, the castle was encapsulated in an exceedingly strong magical barrier. No one, not even the Elven emissaries that were with us at the time could transport themselves out. The Commander Degmar of the time was very [wise].'

You say, 'How was he wise?'

Damton Silverhammer says 'He integrated the elves into the population, treating them as equals, as family even. For many centuries we had peace. Unfortunately, what we did not realize is that the elves are uncomfortable in enclosed spaces, and after hundreds of years of claustrophic isoluation they went insane. A group of the elves started killing the dwarves off, one at a time, leaving evidence that implicated other dwarves. As you can imagine, [paranoia] ran rampant.'

    You say, 'Paranoia?'

Damton Silverhammer says 'The situation would have stabilized, except Commander Alast Degmar, an ancestor of the original Commander Degmar, caught an elf attempting to assassinate him. Alast Degmar was already paranoid that the elves were out to get him, and this proved his fears and sent him into a frothing rage. He killed every elf in the castle, though Priestess Gli'helin managed to escape the purge, and has managed to stay hidden since then. And even after slaying the elves, paranoia is still a [problem].'

You say, 'What kind of problem?'

Damton Silverhammer says 'I hate to think of any more dwarf blood being shed, but many of my brothers and sisters are so far gone that they'll attack any stranger they see on sight, even if you are trying to help them. Do what you must, but spare as many as you can.'

You say, 'What happened with your banishment?'

Damton Silverhammer says 'My banishment is a sad story. I can [explain] it if you wish, or you can just help me [resolve] it by reading the notes I'll jot down in your journal.'

    You say, 'Yes, explain...'

Damton Silverhammer says 'This [castle] has a long sordid history. Thankfully, I've managed to stave off the rampant paranoia that has affected the other dwarves in these past twenty years. When Neckchi was captured, and don't tell him this, it will just frighten him more, he was sentenced to be executed. I could not allow that to happen, so I [freed] him.'

    You say, 'You freed him?'

Damton Silverhammer says 'Yes. I freed him. I could not justify the judgment, handed down simply because Commander Degmar is paranoid. By doing this I earned the wrath of Commander Degmar. Luckily, he is so paranoid that he believes the teleport device to be a [bomb]. He ordered his men to clear out of the guard house, and banished me here as a traitor.'

You say, 'It's not a bomb, is it...'

Damton Silverhammer says 'Of course it's not a bomb, but I let the commander think that so he does not send guards here to kill us. The influx of adventurers like you has only served to fuel his paranoia, and he sees you as invaders. But I ramble on. Let me explain the [task].'

You say, 'What about the task?'

Damton Silverhammer says 'It's fairly simple, though dangerous. I'm sending you to the [armory] to retrieve a specific hammer that has [sentimental] value for Commander Degmar. When you go there, I've arranged to have a few enemies of mine [ambush] you. I think by the fact that I arranged the ambush, this will convince Commander Degmar that I'm not a traitor, and he will allow me to return. You must keep this confidential.'

You say, 'Where is the armory?'

Damton Silverhammer says 'The armory is on the lower level. Take the east branch in the foyer, and go through the library and throne room to get to the armory.'

You say, 'What's sentimental about the hammer?'

Damton Silverhammer says 'It's simple. It is his father's hammer. The hammer is unremarkable except for its family heritage. If I return it to him after the "invaders" steal it, it will help ingratiate me with Commander Degmar.'

    You say, 'Ambush me, really?'

Damton Silverhammer says 'Yes. I know I'm asking a lot for you to purposefully go into an ambush, and now that I think about it, since you're forewarned, it's not much of an ambush. But... I can tell that a _____ like you is a survivor and you'll be just fine. Please don't think me callous for asking you to kill my fellow dwarves. They are our enemies. If they no longer have a voice in Commander Degmar's ear, it will further cement my return.'

You say, 'I'll resolve all this'

Damton Silverhammer says 'Thank you. I've placed the notes you will need in your journal. I'll [explain] more if you like.'

You have been assigned the task 'Castle Crasher'.

Damton Silverhammer has been banished and would like for you to clear her name. Go to the armory and survive the ambush. The armory is on the east branch from the foyer.

Go to the armory and approach the hammer 0/1 (Dregmar, the Lost Castle)

Kill 1 Ambusher 0/1 (Dregmar, the Lost Castle)

Updates at around -310, 125, -13 in the armory (through the eastern wing of the castle; down the hall leading west out of the throne room). Note: A mob will spawn here, so you'll probably want to clear the area of guards.

a Degmar ambusher says 'It will end poorly for you.'

Kill 1x "a Degmar ambusher" (of average difficulty for the zone; mezzable; social with other mobs in the room).

Collect 1 Degmar Ceremonial Hammer 0/1 (Dregmar, the Lost Castle)

This is a ground spawn at the location of the ambush (appears as a hammer sitting on a crate).

Deliver 1 Degmar Ceremonial Hammer to Damton Silverhammer 0/1 (Dregmar, the Lost Castle)

Damton Silverhammer is grateful for your assistance.

This gives +225 positive faction hit to Degmar's Commoners, same as Castle Raid, and this solo task is a lot quicker and easier to complete.

That's important because to obtain the Castle Relic heroic adventure which is a necessary part of advancement, you need to raise this faction from the default dubious to apprehensive. This can be done by doing any 2 of Castle Raid and Castle Crasher, since they each give +225 faction points. Both have 6-hour lockout timers, so doing them back to back is a quick way to get the faction hits needed.

The ambusher spawn spot is right where the axe can be found, on top of some boxes along the middle of the wall opposite where you enter the armory. The ambusher spawns on top of whoever makes the approach, sees thru all invis, attacks immediately and will agro any nearby guards to help. Your group only has to kill the ambusher once for everyone in the group to get credit for the "kill ambusher" step. But everybody has to spawn an ambusher in order to get credit for the "approach hammer" step. There can be multiple ambushers up at the same time if you spawned it and managed to avoid engaging (CoHero, evac, feign death, dying, etc.) Once you've cleared agro with the ambusher you can go back and pick up the sword and get the credit for that final step.

Basically, you just need to clear 3 or so guards to get some fighting room, spawn the ambusher once, kill it to get everyone that step, and then just use some agro-clearing techniques to get the rest of the group credit for spawning additional ambushers. Even dying once is a reasonable tactic if no evacer or mage (CoHero) is available and you have classes that can't fade agro. Once everyone has triggered the spawns, invis up and run back to collect the hammer. I found the agro range on spawned ambushers is very small. I had 3 of them near the hammer and not one toon got agro just picking it up.

THIS solo task has a lot less running around to it as compared to Castle Raid so I'd recommend doing this twice, after observing the 6-hour lockout timer, over doing Castle Raid. But each to his own.
