The Darkened Sea Info & Guides: Overview | Progression & Task List | Raiding | Visible Armor

This solo task is the first in a series of three begins with Ellen Kwiklen (click for map image) in the Caverns of Endless Song. She is located in the small area above water just south of the underwater zone-in tunnel.

Pre-Requisites for Requesting:
- None

Say "food chain" to request the task.

You say, 'Hail, Ellen Kwiklen'

Ellen Kwiklen says 'Can you feel it _____? The angst and tension in the air? As if a great storm is about to break and deluge the world in an angry torrent of cleansing water and lightning. The kedge of the Tempest Temple may be extreme in their methods, but at least they understand that sometimes chaos is the [natural order] of things.'

You say, 'Natural order?'

Ellen Kwiklen says 'Yes...I just said that. Anyway. The order here has been disturbed. The sirens' presence in these caverns has sent the prior inhabitants into a stupefied haze of enraged anger. As if the magic of their songs has muddled their instincts through long exposure. The order must be restored _____, here, and everywhere. Will you help me heal the wounds of this [defiled sanctuary]?'

You say, 'Defiled sanctuary?'

Ellen Kwiklen says 'I...wait...is that a yes? I can't tell with you. You just keep repeating my words back to me. I'm going to go out on a limb and assume you'll help me. If we're going to fix the natural order here we'll have to start at the bottom and work our way up. Of the [food chain] that is.'

You say, 'Food chain?'

Ellen Kwiklen sighs heavily. 'It's like listening to my own voice echoing off the cave walls. In any case, the first thing we need to do is get the animals back following their instincts, and for most of the creatures here that means hunting. Normally I'd smack you over the head for killing animals, but we need to jump start their instincts. Collect a stack of spikeback meat, you'll need quite a few good sized pieces. Next you'll need to take those steaks and set them on hornback beetle dens. That should draw them out and remind them of their carrion instincts. Be ready for them to be rather ravenous. If they try to make you their next meal, don't hesitate to defend yourself. It's all in the natural order of things. Once you've handled that come back and we'll talk about what's next.

You have been assigned the task 'Natural Instincts'.

Ellen Kwiklen is very worried about the native creatures of the caverns, and how they've been affected by the sirens as well as the undead in the area. She wants you to help restore the natural order by kick starting the animal's natural instincts.

Start by placing spineback meat on the beetle dens in the caverns.

Collect hornback beetle corpses 0/10 (Caverns of Endless Song)

Kill spinebacks (turepta mobs) and loot "Spineback Meat" (dropped about one in every three spineback kills - confirmed from "an enraged spineback" and "a vicious spineback" - maybe others too). Then 'give' the meat to "a beetle den" or "a beetle nest" that are scattered about the above-water caverns in the zone (a lot of spinebacks and beetle nests are located in the caverns east and west of those that house Brothers Dilgen and Visius).

Upon handing in Spineback Meat, 3-6 "a hornrock beetle" spawn:

A number of tiny bugs begin to squirm their way out of the nest. Tentatively at first, but once they notice the meat they begin to swarm.

These are trivial mobs (mezzable and stunnable; hit for a max ~800). Drop rate for "Rockhorn Beetle Corpse" may depend on the number of players in the group who are on the same task step.

Deliver the hornback beetle corpses to Ellen Kwiklen 0/10 (Caverns of Endless Song)

Well done. These beetle corpses will come in handy for the next step of my master plan. You've done some mushroom farming in the past I'm certain? No?! Well there's no time like the [present].

1 Meat from a turtle to a beetle nest which are located wherever turtles are gets you the beetles.

And as with other collect tasks, if everyone loots the item to update their quest journal it hinders you. The more people loot, the less they drop.

Have them stay in the advanced loot window until there are enough, or if that isn't viable, have people complete it, and request the task again even though they won't finish it. The more people with a task open without looting items means more quest items drop.

each spineback meat spawns five or six beetles, their corps can be looted by anyone in the group you do not need anywhere near ten per person and you aggro mobs that drop more meat as you harvest beetle corpses
Full group requires 60!

60 Rockhorn Beetle Corpses is going to take a while and that's what a full group of questers will need. Here's a tip which might help. If you've done a lot of these kinds of missions in TDS you know that the drop rate starts out high but declines rapidly as group members complete their requirement. So what I did was just loot up to 9 of the 10 required for each group member. Then I spawned and killed 4 full cycles of beetles, so there'd be plenty of corpses to loot. Then I clicked on a corpse for each group member, ensuring they each had their 10th corpse BUT I DID NOT YET LOOT. I waited until all 6 toons had a lootable 10th corpse in the loot window. Then I looted. I'm not sure at what point the game engine evaluates who needs what so I made sure every toon had access to their 10th loot item. Worked like a charm!

Drop rate estimate may be too high at 75%

103 total kills so far of which 18 were not beetles. So 85 kills so far, total quest items is 42. I'd go with 50% drop rate rather than 75%.
