The Darkened Sea Info & Guides: Overview | Progression & Task List | Raiding | Visible Armor

This solo task begins with Gregor Olmstead (click for map image) in Tempest Temple. He is found at /loc 110, -345, 6 (east-central coastal area of the island).

Pre-Requisites for Requesting:
- None

Say "hold" to request the task.

You say, 'Hail, Gregor Olmstead'

Gregor Olmstead says 'Keep your head down _____! It can't have escaped your notice that the wind's blowin' up a gale today! Well today and every other day that I'm stuck on this accursed island. There's precious little of my sanity left after weeks of dodging flying rocks and angry reef crawlers. Any longer here and I fear this keen mind I hold dear will finally give out. Be that as it were, you're a sight for sore eyes. I have a plan to get out of here, but I need a partner, which is where [you] come in.'

You say, 'What do you mean, 'you'?'

Gregor Olmstead says 'As you can see, I've managed to put together a seaworthy vessel from the various commodities at my disposal on this island. I must have sailed away from this quagmire a dozen times already, but the blasted storm keeps spinning me around and bringing me back here. Now then, I can't imagine you're too familiar with nautical terms, being a land lubber and all, but every large vessel carries with it a navigation device called a 'compass'. I'll spare you the details, but suffice it to say it'll help me get off this rock. An individual of such discerning perceptions will have certainly noticed that rather large shipwreck nearby. It's certain to have one of these 'compasses' somewhere in its [hold].'

You say, 'Its hold?'

Gregor Olmstead says 'Aye, somewhere in the bowels of the great slain beast lies the ticket to my...our salvation _____! If I were you, I'd start by searching the crates in the stern of the ship. If it's not there, then one of the crew must have it. I suppose it's possible that the compass rests in the icy embrace of Prexus' depths, but let's be honest, we both know my luck's too good for that to be true.'

You have been assigned the task 'Of Pirates and Men'.

Gregor Olmstead needs a compass in order to escape from the island of Tempest Temple. He believes there might be one to be found in the haunted shipwreck.

Break open the crates in the ship's cargo hold 0/5 (Tempest Temple)

Check the cursed pirates for the compass 0/10 (Tempest Temple)

Find the ship's navigator 0/1 (Tempest Temple)

The ship is northeast of Gregor Olmstead's location and full of undead. You'll be dealing with some awkward mob pathing here. There are damp crates scattered throughout; all you need to do for those is /open them (no tricks).

Kill 10x "a cursed pirate" while you're at it. Note: The "a sea banshee" mobs in this area proc a stun and are immune to stuns, but mezzable. Upon the 10th kill, you receive "Old Metallic Compass" on your cursor.

"Navigator Henry" is a zombie that spawns on the ship's deck (the western half of the broken ship's topside), doesn't appear to be any more difficult than standard mobs (stunnable and mezzable). Killing this mob updates the "ship's navigator" step.

Give the Old Metallic Compass to Gregor Olmstead 0/1 (Tempest Temple)

Gregor Olmstead's normally placid stare takes a turn for the strange as you hand over the compass. His lips curl and he begins to cackle evilly, 'Finally! The compass of the ancient Combine sailors is mine! They all said I was crazy to try and find you, but who's the crazy one now DAD?! This compass will lead me to the land of riches beyond the dark horizon. I will go there and find my fortune and rule as did the kings of old! The Combine, the Shissar, the Rallosians, all will fade from history in the shadow of the grandeur that will be my golden empire! Fear not Gregor Olmstead, for I will remember your service when I come into my seat of power, and woe be to thee who opposes the will of their lord and master!' He continues to ramble on for quite a while, but you mostly stop listening and stare at him with a mixed look of befuddlement and apprehension.

Speak with Gregor Olmstead 0/1 (Tempest Temple)

You say, 'Hail, Gregor Olmstead'

Gregor Olmstead snaps his head and glares at you with undisguised contempt. 'What! How dare you interrupt the pontification of your lord! The heavens shall rain down terrible vengeance upon those who fail to respect the absolute authority of my divine glory!' He raises the old compass above his head and continues to yell at you as the wind begins to quicken. Soon the looming encroachment of thunder rolls through the air as you feel the prickle of static skitter across your skin. A massive bolt of lightning parts the clouds and strikes.

Gregor Olmstead died.

When doing this task with 3 characters at the same time, he was not taking the Old Metallic Compass at first. He kept saying, "I have no need for this, Charactername. You can have it back." I completed the quest with the first character the rest of the way through. Then I waited for his respawn. Hailed with the next character, then he let me continue. Had to hail again with the third character before handing over the compass to complete all 3.

a cursed evoker sees thru both regular and undead invisibility spells. They wander the cargo hold so watch out for them. There is one crate which spawns visible from the outside, on the broken deck in the middle of the ship. You can just sit on this and wait for respawns if you don't want to risk entering the bowels of the ship.

Old Metallic Compass will pop on your curser

1. Break open the crates in the ship's cargo hold 0/5 (Tempest Temple)
2. Check the cursed pirates for the compass 0/10 (Tempest Temple)
3. Find the ship's navigator 0/1 (Tempest Temple)

Old Metallic Compass will pop on your curser after the final complete of these 3 tasks - not on the kill of the Navigator unless its the last task of the 3.

Best way to Navigator

I was able to solo Navigator by using IVU and levitation to get over to upper deck west side. Take out the cursed pirate at the very front mast of the ship. Then kill 2 roamers that come to the front of the ship. Last part is Navigator and 2 adds which I was able to unload on. Once Navigator is killed compass pops into curser and then can talk to Gregor Olmstead for final completion.
