This solo task begins with Krinoch Jal (click for map image) in Tempest Temple. This is a Kedge found on the southwestern part of the floating island.
Pre-requisites for requesting:
- Completion of "A Rising Storm"
Say "speak" to request the task.
At the end of the previous task, you saw:
Krinoch Jal says 'The sea coughed and spat like the angriest surf you've ever seen, and there was a terrible glow that dove deep into the dark water. Then they began arriving through the portal: Combine from Katta Castrum, escaping some calamity. A few made it through only to be struck down by the storms. If only I could stop this [madness]...'
You say, 'What madness?'
Krinoch Jal says 'Cecile Aldegund's [vision] seemed so lovely: A home away from the prisons created by the Combine, and the embrace of a god who would protect us. But with this storm we wreck our ocean and end the lives of the creatures around us. And must we make the innocent among the Combine suffer for the sins of their ancestors?'
You say, 'What vision?'
Krinoch Jal says 'It is clouded now, like the skies above the island. I want to do the right thing, like that gnome I've spied on the beach, helping those who have suffered from our actions. Please [speak] to Kelpin Larch and beg him to cease the storms around the floating island. But don't tell him I spoke to you!'
You say, 'I'll speak to him...'
Krinoch Jal says 'Remember not to tell him about me!'
You have been assigned the task 'Gathering Clouds'.
Krinoch Jal told you that a Kedge named Kelpin Larch has been sending storms against the floating island where the portal lies. Krinoch wants you to speak to Kelpin about changing his ways. If he does not, Ognit will need to come up with a different plan.
Find Kelpin Larch and speak with him 0/7 (Tempest Temple)
Kelpin Larch (click for map image) is found at the top of the mountainside on the southern end of the mountain in the middle of the zone. He /cons KOS, but is non-aggro. Hail him until the task updates.
Kelpin Larch's fins bristle. 'Krinoch sent you, didn't he? The traitorous lover of the legged ones would have us cease the storms and forsake our pursuit of Karana's favor. And for what? For the safety of the Combine?'
Kelpin Larch says 'If they spill from the portal and fall under the fists of my lightning, it is as Cecile wishes. She knows what the Combine do to Kedge. I know what their knives and potions have done to my body.'
Kelpin Larch says 'The experiments resume. They will not stop. And so the Combine shall not set foot on the island while I watch!'
Bindess Lon looks to her master. 'Don't let them take you again! Ask Cecile to send another blast into the waves! Destroy Katta Castrum!
Kelpin Larch touches his apprentice's shoulder. 'You have been with me long, and remained true to my teachings even during my captivity. I will not leave you now. But I doubt even Cecile can channel magic as powerful as we saw breaching the sea.'
Kelpin Larch says 'You, however, have learned much about storms and magic, Bindess! Show this friend of the enslavers what you know!'
Bindess Lon says 'Happily!'
You hear Kelpin's stern voice mingled with the surf. 'Into the sea, not into the storm totems! No, it is fine. They know not how they work. Next time you need to carry an object on an air current...' Kelpin begins lecturing Bindess on the finer points of controlling storm winds through magic.
Inspect the storm totem 0/1 (Tempest Temple)
After speaking with Kelpin Larch, you are ported to a small floating island on which you find "a storm totem". /inspect it, and you'll be knocked off into the water.
The storm winds swirl around you when you touch the totem.
Krinoch calls from the floating island above. 'You see how the totems bolster the winds? Perhaps the gnome you've spoken of can use his magic to rob the totems of their power!'
Speak with Ognit about the storm totems 0/4 (Tempest Temple)
Ognit Eznertob (click for map image) is on the eastern coast of the island. Hail him until the task updates.
Ognit Eznertob taps his stomach and scowls in thought. 'Too much time gone by... I'm sorry my spell wasn't more, um, helpful. It's been so many years since I studied under Al`Kabor. He said I'd never make a decent wizard, and maybe he was right.'
Ognit Eznertob touches his head. 'Soon these streaks of gray will pile up in snow drifts. Despite what Al`Kabor wishes, we don't live forever. Sometimes you must stop struggling up the path to the summit if you know you don't have the strength or skill to make it.'
Ognit Eznertob says 'After we thought Firiona died, I admitted to myself that I would never be a great wizard. I went to Ak`Anon and devoted myself to tinkering.' Ognit rubs his chin. 'And with those skills and what little magic I recall, we might come up with a solution for the storm.'
Ognit Eznertob says 'With a lot of tinkering and a little magic, I might be able to reverse the effects of the totems. Could you find a kedge totem that has not yet been imbued with storm magic? You might find some lying around the island. You might need to defend yourself if the kedge don't like your taking their totems.'
Inspect and retrieve an unpowered storm totem for Ognit 0/1 (Tempest Temple)
Deal with the kedge guarding the totem 0/2 (Tempest Temple)
"an unpowered storm totem" (click for map image) are found around the northern and northwestern parts of the island (and one is on the southern part). Each is guarded by 2x "a totem empowerer".
/inspect "an unpowered storm totem" to receive "Unpowered Storm Totem" on your cursor. The Kedge guards are immune to stuns and mezzes (duo guards are NOT aggro-linked).
Give the storm totem to Ognit 0/1 (Tempest Temple)
Ognit Eznertob says 'Good. Now, if I only had my tools... I left them near the boat we took from the Brothers' island. Brother Minkins was standing guard, but I haven't heard from him in a while.'
Find the chest on the shore and Brother Minkins 0/1 (Tempest Temple)
Find "a tool chest" (click for map image) along the northeastern coast. (Location update here.)
You don't see Brother Minkins, but a voice moans from within the coral forest. 'The sirens... help me...'
Find Brother Minkins inside the coral formation 0/1 (Tempest Temple)
Brother Minkins (click for map image) is found along the western edge of the reef. This is a location update (/loc 545, 140, 3).
Minkins lies in the shallows, and crabs are picking over his body.
Kill the scavenging crabs that are picking over Brother Minkins 0/3 (Tempest Temple)
Kill any three of the "a scavenging crab" in the area. These are not social with any other mobs and are mezzable/stunnable.
Speak with Brother Minkins and see how he fares 0/1 (Tempest Temple)
Be ready for more mob aggro upon hail.
You say, 'Hail, Brother Minkins'
Brother Minkins says 'The sirens... they took me... used me... don't go in the caverns... don't go...' A rattling sigh issues from Brother Minkins' mouth as his stomach twitches and separates. 'Guuuhhhhhh...'
5x "a gut crab" spawn at his location.
Kill the gut crabs issuing from Brother Minkins 0/5 (Tempest Temple)
These hit for a max ~1,000 and have relatively few hitpoints. They are not social with the other crabs in the area, but you'll want to be careful about proximity aggro. If you set up in the tiny cubby next to Brother Minkins, you should be able to fight them without any aggro from the full-size crabs (except maybe the closest one).
If these are left idle for any longer than about 20 seconds, they despawn. If you fail this step, you can respawn them by hailing Brother Minkins again.
Speak with Brother Minkins 0/1 (Tempest Temple)
You say, 'Hail, Brother Minkins'
Brother Minkins says 'I thought I'd take the tools and get out of here; maybe sell them... I won't need 'em anymore... I didn't wear my helmet... always wear your helmet... tell Jameswell I did my best... to avoid temptation...'

You say, 'Hail, Ognit Eznertob'
Ognit Eznertob says 'Brother Minkins is...? On the voyage he kept telling us sirens could be lurking anywhere. I suppose he finally found them.' Ognit takes the tools and looks thoughtfully at one of the storm totems. 'Now, if I only knew more about the [spells] the kedge are using...''
