NOTE: A patch on March 25, 2015, added a work-around to obtain items from Cazic Thule, Dread, Fright, and Terror:

- In the Plane of Fear, a harbinger of Fear can help adventurers get their epic 1.0 pieces that would normally drop from Cazic-Thule or the golems. These pieces cannot be multi-quested or traded. In addition, a harbinger of Fear can advance the Whistling Fists quest in the same way as Cazic-Thule. A harbinger of Fear will not be available on progression servers until they have opened up the TDS expansion? (need confirmation on this)

Furthermore, a patch on April 22, 2015, added a work-around to obtain bottleneck items from Phinigel Autropos (Kedge Keep), Gorenaire (Dreadlands), and Talendor (Skyfire Mountains). (not on progression servers). The workaround for this quest is to swim into Phini's area in Kedge and kill the "Swirlspine Guardians" until a mermaid titled "a harbinger of the seas" spawns - talk to her and she will spawn a version of Phinigel for you that will only drop your needed 1.0 piece.

Full Walkthrough

Head to the the Temple of Solusek Ro and talk to a human wizard named Solomen. He is located on the left side of the temple between the two undead knights (one room from Lord Searfire at +425, +80, +29).
You say, 'Hail, Solomen'

Solomen says 'Ah, I see you have found my study. This is where I study and scribe the history of magic in Norrath.'

You say, 'What history?'

Solomen says 'I have worked to chronicle everything from the beginnings of magic to what we consider the modern day of magic. Solusek Ro has been very generous to those who wield magic in Norrath. But throughout history there is one thing I have noticed - too much power corrupts the soul. I have seen and documented that the strongest wizards and those closest to Solusek Ro become corrupted by their power.'

You say, 'What Wizards?'

Solomen says 'Unfortunately, I don't have time to speak of such things right now. But I could use your help since you are here. I have here an envelope that I need delivered to one Camin Rah. You can find Camin in the wizard tower in the city of Erudin. He is a sage like myself whose knowledge rivals my own. Do you [agree] to undertake my task?'

You say, 'I agree.'

Solomen says 'Here you are, then. Good luck on your journey.'

  • You receive a Note to Camin.

  • The note identifies as "I've found what we've been searching for!")

You must hand this note to Camin, the next NPC involved in the epic. It reads:

"Hello, old friend, I have made an updated list and locations of the items required for my research. Dragon bones- Plane of Fear Jet Black egg- Unknown Mistletoe powder- Old Sebilis Rune of Lost Thought- Unknown Contact me when you find them Solomen"

Now head to the City of Erudin and find Camin. He can be found inside the Vasty Deep Inn on the 2nd floor. To find him, simply open the front door and go up the stairs to your right. Go down the hall and open the first door on your left. Camin will be behind the door at -1166, -11, 84. He is on Truespirit faction (similar to Beta Neutral - no faction for killing him and starts non-KOS to all).

  • Hand him the note that Solomen gave to you to get this response:

  • Camin says 'So you have met Solomen, eh? He is a man with a wealth of knowledge. It is good to hear he is well.'

    You say, 'Hail, Camin'

Camin says 'Go away! I have no time for you!'

You say, 'What are you searching for?'

Camin says 'Ah! A smart one, I see! If you really wish to know about such a thing, you will have to help me finance my studies. The knowledge I have acquired and researched did not come cheaply.'

You will need to give Camin 1000pp at this point.
Camin says 'Good, good, you show a willingness to learn of this with your offer. What I can tell you is that Solusek Ro had four followers who had shown exceptional aptitude in the arts of wizardry. Solusek Ro himself tutored them. He considered them to be like his own children. I know of one who still exists. He goes by the name of Arantir Karondor. He used to specialize in the storing of magic into physical objects. Arantir has been hiding for many, many years and will most assuredly be going by another name, so keep your eyes open. Anyway, be off, I need to continue my research. Return to me if you ever find Arantir Karondor.'

Your faction standing with Truespirit has been adjusted by 10.
    You gain experience!

Now you must head to Halas. Once there, head toward the shaman guild and find a vendor named Dargon (location 350, 357) that sells a potion called Ro's Breath (identifies as "Powerful magic radiates from this object."). Buy this potion for around 1000pp and make your way back to Erudin.

  • Hand Ro's Breath over to Camin and get this response:

  • Camin says 'Very interesting... I've seen this work before. Yes, yes! It's the work of Arantir Karondor! Give this back to the person you got it from. Maybe he will have a clue to Arantir's location.'

Your faction standing with Truespirit has been adjusted by 10.
    You gain experience!

  • Camin gives you back the potion.

  • It now identifies as "I know who you are."). The only difference is that it no longer has a charge of Shield of Lava. You must now take this potion back to Dargon in Halas. Once it's handed in, she will turn into Arantir Karondor and reply with:
Dargon says 'So, I've been discovered! You must know Camin - he is one of the only people who could have recognized my work. I have worked very hard to mask my presence here.'

    You say, 'Hail, Arantir Karondor'

Arantir Karondor says 'Before I tell you anything, I require you to help me. Seek a woman named Challice. Give her this ring and then return to me.'

  • You receive Arantir's Ring (identifies as "My love has no bounds").

  • You now need to seek Challice out inside the Felwithe Paladin guild at location -13, -263.

  • Give her the ring.

  • Challice says 'Oh yes? Arantir? What a fool he was! The man gave me everything, but for all his intelligence, he could never understand why I was truly with him. It was for his power; he could do anything. But when he mysteriously lost it, he became just another toy. I never loved him. Return this ring to him. He will understand that I have no desire to see him again.'

Your faction standing with Truespirit has been adjusted by 10.
    You gain experience!

  • You get a different version of the ring back (identifies as "I never could love a man like you.").

  • Now you must head back to Halas.

  • You can hand the ring to either version of Arantir. Handing it into Dargon will spawn the real version.

  • Arantir Karondor says 'Ah, but it pains my heart to see this. How I could love a woman like that is beyond me. And yet, I still do love her. It was on the day I was to ask her to marry me that I lost my powers. When I was about to cast my greatest spell to prove my love to her, my magic failed. She ran out on me that day. But enough of me, do you wish to hear my story?'

You say, 'I wish to hear your story.'

Arantir Karondor says 'I once was one of four true followers of Solusek Ro. So great were the four of us that Solusek Ro himself made us each a special item. We did not know what the others' items were, but we realized that was for our own safety. Each one of us, after receiving the item, began to plot against Solusek Ro. Each of us believed we had enough power to dominate Norrath. Solusek Ro saw this and at the time we needed our powers most, he stripped us of them. Now I know two of the other wizards by name. One was called Sylen Tyrn, the other's name was Demunir Scry. The last wizard was a gnome, but I can't think of his name.'

You say, 'What about Sylen Tyrn?'

Arantir Karondor says 'Sylen was a high elf wizard, and like many high elves, he believed himself to be better than others. Because of his birth, he thought he was more noble and more intelligent than anyone else. I heard how met his demise - while flying over a vast area of water, his powers were stripped from him in midflight. He fell and was captured by a rival wizard who specialized in magics of the water. Search for that wizard and you could find a trace of Sylen.'

The "trace of Sylen" he speaks of can be found on Phinigel Autropos in Kedge Keep, just make sure you keep going on with the rest of the dialog below before you go there. A Blue Crystal Staff is what you need. It's one of Phinigel's rare drops so you're in for a "fun" camp. He can be taken out easily by two or three organized groups. He has a number of magic immune guardians surrounding him so you may want a monk to do the pulling.
You say, 'What about Demunir Scry?'

Arantir Karondor says 'Demunir was a human in a rush for power. He was extremely intelligent and resourceful but, unfortunately, was more interested in destructive magic. Hearing of an ancient land, he immediately traveled to it, believing there to be powerful relics left undiscovered there. While exploring, he came upon a dwelling that housed a powerful warrior. Believing himself to be more powerful, he attempted to take this dwelling for himself. While in battle with this warrior, Solusek Ro stole his powers and left him helpless. It is said that Demunir's item is the warrior's most prized trophy.'

After you go through the rest of the below dialog and get the note, you're in for another not-so-enjoyable camp. The item you need now is the Gnarled Staff which can be found on Venril Sathir in Karnor's Castle (/loc?). It's his uncommon drop.

Although only 55th level, Venril will take three or four groups to put down. He procs a 1500 point lifetap so your raid will need to manage aggro very carefully.
You say, 'Who is the gnome?'

Arantir Karondor says 'Ah, the gnome I know very little about. I know he was small and crafty, and that he had a brother. His brother's craft was that of making fireworks, and he was the unfortunate victim of one of his own experiments. His firework exploded, leaving his mind diminished in capacity, even for a gnome. I remember others calling him 'Old Stewpot' in jest. I do not know if this is his birth name, but it may help you to locate him. I hear he also stays close to water because of the explosion. You never know when another gnomish invention will go awry. Give him this letter to help motivate him to remember.'

  • You receive a Note from Arantir (identifies as "What is lost must be found").

  • It reads:

"Greetings Sir Gnome, I hope this letter reaches you in good health."

The gnome Arantir is referring to is Kandin Firepot. He has a 2.5-3 day respawn timer and is found at about -1490, 2845 in Butcherblock Mountains (in a gnome vendor camp along the coastline far south of the dock area). When you give Kandin the Note from Arantir he will say:

Kandin Firepot says 'Brother! I have one of those. He's great, but he's dead. His name was Gabstik and he was a really powerful wizard. I still have one of his greatest possessions! You look like you could use it. I've added another item to my shopping list. I require a dry brittle skin that I can mold or a rare oil found in the planes that I must soak the fuse in. Get me one of these things and I'll trade it for my brother's stick.'

Your faction standing with Truespirit has been adjusted by 10.

    You say, 'Hail, Kandin Firepot'
Kandin Firepot says 'Hello, there! Don't have time to talk. I'm workin', workin', workin'! Careful! Don't slip in the oil!

    You say, 'What oil?'

Kandin Firepot says 'Ah the oil! I recently sent a specially crafted golem to explore through a huge portal to another plane. Its instructions were to collect special oil that I suspect existed in the plane. What I think is the golem broke down. This looks like a good task for one like you. Go see what's wrong with the golem. Here are spare gears of mine in case it's broken. Be careful though, if you put it in wrong it could explode, or worse!'

  • You receive a Golem Sprocket.

  • Head to the Plane of Fear with a raid intact. Hand the sprocket to a broken golem. You now have a 65th level Enraged Golem to deal with. This will be a LONG fight, as he has well over 150k hps.
An enraged golem says 'Error! Malfunction! Destroy!
An enraged golem says 'Wizards like you always bring out the worst in me.'

  • Once he is dead, loot Green Oil.

  • Head back to Butcherblock and hand in the Green Oil to Kandin in Butcherblock.

  • Kandin Firepot says 'Oh wow! You found the oil! Where is the golem? You didn't hurt him did you? I am very fond of him. Anyways, here is your reward a note and staff to give to that guy you were asking me about.'

Your faction standing with Truespirit has been adjusted by 30.
    You gain experience!

  • You receive a Staff of Gabstik and a Note to Arantir (identifies as "Give him a fish!"), which reads:

  • "The fish thank you for the people you sent me! Oh also if you ever come across my lantern please let me know."

  • Now take the note from Kandin and make sure you have the Blue Crystal Staff and the Gnarled Staff and the Staff of Gabstik on you. Give the note to Dargon in Halas. Arantir will once again appear in her place.

  • You say, 'Hail, Arantir Karondor'
Arantir Karondor says 'Ah yes, you again. Do you have the items? Give me the three you possess and I'll combine them with my own.

  • At this point, hand Arantir the Blue Crystal Staff, the Gnarled Staff, and the Staff of Gabstik.

  • Arantir Karondor says 'Here, this pack contains all of our items. You will never be able to open it again, so you must deliver the pack, intact, to Solomen. He will then reward you. Now that I have helped you, leave me in peace.'

Your faction standing with Truespirit has been adjusted by 30.
    You gain experience!

  • You receive a Magically Sealed Bag (identifies as "Godlike magic radiates from this bag").

  • Now you must go back to Solomen in Temple of Solusek Ro and hand him the bag.

  • Solomen says 'You actually did it! I never would have thought that anyone could have truly followed this path. This is a tribute to your intelligence and patience. Here, take this staff and know that you have made Solusek Ro and all the wizards of the world proud this day.'

Your faction standing with Truespirit has been adjusted by -100.

The final faction hit is in fact negative.

  • You receive The Staff of the Four.

I starte this quest when I was 48 or 49 and I got the "How did someone as inexperienced as you get this?" message. Now I am 51 and will start again. I still have Camin's Note. Do I need to go back to Camin or can I just go ahead and buy the potion and turn it in to him? Hate to lose another 989pp or so again.

I bought a FEAR MQ and it went pretty smoothly, got my satchel I had to bring back to Solomen, turned it in and HE ATE IT! /sigh....took a GM to give me my epic, apparently, I missed out on the little sliver of faction hit when turning in the Green Oil and getting the Staff of Gabstik, which still made me apprehensive to Solomen. I wasn't aware of this until after I did the turn in.

Be aware....if you're MQ'ing or doing ANY type of turn-in on this quest, make sure you have indifferent faction at LEAST.

Open up the trade window and have a friend cast invis on you to get indifferent faction

Many MQ’s have failed recently. I think that may be due to faction issues.

Just yesterday, we did a successful MQ for my epic. Both myself and the mage were Apprehensive to Arantir. I’d done all the hand ins and should have correct faction, unless I killed something I shouldn’t have at some point (kinda likely).

As Posidius mentioned, Arantir does not see invisibility.

Magician handed in the Blue Crystal Staff, and I invised him before he clicked the Give button. After he said he had done the turn in, we did same thing for me, I gave both Gnarled Staff and Staff of Gabstik to Arantir, but had mage invis me before I clicked the Give button.

Got my bag. Ported to Nek, went up to Sol Temple, gave Solomen the bag, got my new whacking stick.

Mage finished his epic 20 mins before hand. So we were both stoked.
I ran to the fridge for a celebratory beer, and there was much rejoicing.

Where is Kandin Firepot? i know his exact /loc, have seen him before and did write down his /loc so i would have it for future reference when i needed to go back. Well i have the green oil now....so where is he?, its been 2 days now and still no Kandin. I think its sad that i have to wait for him to 'spawn' so i can do my turn in. Just a warning for all you wizzies trying to turn this in, if someone kills him or whatever, dont hold your breath waiting for him to pop, it could take days or even weeks , who knows. Yet the dwarf next to him has a spawn time of only 10 MINS if you kill him, so go figure../Bonk SoE .Haven't i spent enough time , doing the epic quest, let alone having to wait on some npc that ppl kill for fun , thanks loads for wasting , yet, more of my time../rant off

    TS factioning

An easy way to raise your TS faction:
    1. Find yourself a friendly chanter to tag along.
    2. Both go to either OOT or BB (Or wherever you can get the gem, never seen anything about the Cabilis guy before). Both of you bind close to where the mob pops.
    3. Kill the "PH" to make the spirit pop, have chanter charm him and just /say I wish to know more to receive your gem.
    4. Get to FP via PoK portal and open a trade window with the barbarian in the sewers, have the chanter invis you to indiff. BEFORE you click trade. (This still works as of Aug. 28th 2003) You should get your TS hit and some unnoticeable XP.
    5. Gate back to where you talked to the spirit to get the gem and redo the steps until you turn indiff yourself, at which point both the spirit and barbarian will be happy enough to see you to let you get the gem and do the turn in without any help, should you wish.

Once you've done 2 or 3 turn-ins you get the hang of it, hence the speed increases and you only need to kill the PH every other time, next time you gate the spirit will still be up for you to charm and/or talk to for a new gem if you are quick.

Very easy and fairly quick if you bind at the spot and with you being a wizzy it's quick enough to port you and chanter to PoK and run to FP.

Took me 5 or 6 runs to get my own indiff faction and then I did some more to amiable, juuust to be sure.
Ooh and also, the barbarian need not be at his spawn point in the sewers. After every gem he gets he makes the small walk to start the shammy epic quest, but he only walks to the other side of the house outside the sewer entrance, stands around for a bit and then walk back. I tried turning in at the regular spot, by the house and running after him through the canal and it worked just fine for me every time.

Good luck Masters of the True Art.

    Venril Sathir Tips
    # Jul 05 2003 at 4:16 AM Rating: Excellent
Venril Sathir comes in two flavours... one is the "real" one that we need for our Wizard Epic, the other is a triggered spawn (aka "VSR") for the Rangers and Druids out there. The real VS is on a more or less 24 hour spawn timer I believe, unless that has been changed.

He is easily taken down by a single group if you set it up as follows:

MA (SK or Paladin tank preferred, but anything works)
    2 Enchanters
    2 Wizards
Healer (Cleric, Shaman, Druid all work fine)

Afer all the usual buffs such as Haste and so forth, the strategy is to engage VS with your tank, and once the MA has decent aggro (only takes a few seconds), have the 2 chanters take turns chain casting Rune buffs on your tank. Venril Sathir has a nasty lifetap that he uses, but if you take that away from him, he is no big deal. Having the MA constantly Runed means that VS will only succeed in breaking the Rune buff... but will not actually get to tap your tank very much... if at all. And of course, once the buff has been broken, a half second later one of the chanters is going to re-buff the MA anyway. Using a pair of chanters (instead of just one) helps to balance the aggro each gets from constantly re-buffing, and makes it less likely that VS will divert his attention to one or the other of them.

This constant Runing will of course *still* draw some aggro to the chanters... or, it normally would, but since we are here with a pair of Wizards, just start blasting VS with your best nukes. He will go down fast with 2 Wizards nuking him. The healer is there simply to heal anyone VS happens to aggro upon other than the tank, or to do small heals on your MA.

I say "SK or Paladin preferred" for the MA simply because they can generally hold aggro better in a situation like this than a warrior can (pally can chain stun, SK can chain tap).

If by any wild chance you mess up, and VS manages to kill someone, just let them die. Healing them only heals VS when he taps them them again. You can either Evac, and rezz later... or just leave them dead and finish the fight. But you should have no such troubles if you follow the strategy above.

VS does not have many hit points really... I am not sure but I think it is around 14K or so. With two wizards chain nuking for 1000+ per pop, he is going to be a meatball in moments.

    Enjoy..!

    Kandin Firepot
    # May 15 2003 at 4:38 AM Rating: Decent
O.K. I've finished everything and now all I have need to do is turn stuff in. I have now been sitting and waiting for Kandin to appear for 12 hours and he's still not there. Anyone know what his spawn time is or do I have to do something to trigger him again? All I need to do is give him the oil and then finish the rest of the turn ins.

And is he still bugged when you hand in the oil? I've been searching for more info on him, but last posts were February when he was bugged and I "think" it was fixed. Any info would be appreciated or pointing me toward a site.

    Thanks!

If you are a Wizard, and began your epic weapon quest **BEFORE** the frog characters were added to EQ, then you need to have a GM do all the final turn-ins by proxy. I turned in the green oil to Kandin and received NOTHING! I petitioned and 10 days later I received an email from the head GM for the Erollisi Marr server. He explained that when they added the frogs and had to reset froglok faction, that they accidentally did something to Truespirit faction as well. Therefore a wizard can NEVER gain enough faction to appease any of the NPC's needed to complete the quest.
Also, since Shamans need the same faction to complete their epic as well, it may be that the shaman epic quest is messed up too. I have NOT confirmed the shaman epic quest bug though, so a petition might be in order for Shaman's that started the epic quest before the frogs were added, just to make sure that you don't turn in the item(s) and get nothing back.

    Good luck all!

Ventril Spawns every 72 hrs +/- 12 hrs, VSR does NOT effect his spawn, if VSR is still up before VS spawns, he depops about an hr before hand.

VS is "up" after server respawn, VSR is the mob that is up RIGHT after server reset, but after a few hrs he depops and VS spawns.

My best advice is to sit in there w/ a ranger and get to see when he spawns, and if you cant get a raid together fast enough find out when he died and plan something for 3 days from then given theres no patches or what not.

It is my experience that once VS pops you have maybe a 2 hr window of oppurtunity before he is killed. So work FAST.

I believe that spawn timers will hold through a server reset these days. So VS would not necessarily be up immediately after a patch.

I just also wanted to add that druid tracking can see VS from zin (same with Phinny). Not sure about bards. So you don't need to call in your super-high-powered ranger tracking for those two.

Spawn timers only hold for PoP gods and such. The programming required to keep track of all the various epic and big mobs in the game between server downs would be huge.

There's no way to "make" Venril Sathir spawn. He's on a spawn timer. Just wait and keep looking for him.

Camin took the note from Solomen, the 1000 plat (+ faction) and told me to go find Arantir. When I brought back the Ro's Breath I got the "How did someone as inexperienced as you get posession of this" line and he ate it. This was at level 40.

*edit* GM returned the Ro's Breath (yay!), I'm going to try handing it in again at 46

I'm lev 46. I've done everything except giving Challice the ring part. So, you can start epic before 51. Only reason I haven't given Challice the ring is that she isn't up. Another character called Chenori is in her spot. Anyone know how to get Challice to spawn?

I have started this epic yesturday. I am lvl 35 and I have got as far as doing everything with Camin, I am now on my way to Halas, with the note. So you can start this at earlier lvls. I am on the Rathe server if that helps.

This is getting rather amusing to say the least!
A very kind GM, god bless her, was kind enough to give me the the note and the oil that Mr Firepot kept to himself. The kind GM told me to proceed with the quest and If Mr Karondor ate the 3 staffs not to panic just send another petition.

    Petition sent......grrrrr

    A question about Challice
    # Feb 05 2003 at 6:58 PM Rating: Decent
My guild wizard just started his epic quest last week, and has completed the quest up to where you turn the ring in to Challice at the Felwithe Paladin's guild. Small problem, no Challice. Checked all three doors downstairs, upstairs, outside, hall behind the bank... nada. Is she a timed or triggered spawn? If so, what do we need to do to get her to pop?
    the short cut
    # Feb 04 2003 at 3:52 PM Rating: Decent
i tried the "short cut" of killing solomen he was easy as pie to kill i had a 51 ranger with me when i tried and i just chain stunned him while she beat away. this is not true he droped a robe of the initiate and a darkwood stave thats it. i was kinda hopeing it would work but it doesnt, all i got out of it was a faction hit for truespirit.

Okay everyone, listen up... the wizard epic quest has been bugged for quite a while. Verant has added and removed various bugs to it over the past few months, but as far as I know, they haven't removed the biggest bug.

    Faction.

For those of you who went to turn something in and lost it... /petition and get it back from a GM (expect it to take a few weeks)

For those of you anxious about doing a turnin because of faction, find a friend who can cast Invis on you and do this. Do NOT try any other way, it will not work.

    1) Mosey yourself up to the turnin NPC, and click the item(s) on them, putting them up in the NPC's trade screen.
    2) Tell your friend you're ready, and, being sure you're grouped with him/her, get them to invis you.
    3) Once your invisible, con the mob to make sure you're indifferent
    4) Hit trade

I am a dark elf wizard of Innoruuk, and completed all the turnins and quest text solo up until handing the oil in to the gnome in Butcherblock. From that point on, I had a friend invis me for ALL of the turnins (I suggest you do the same)

By the way, for any who don't know, Verant tried to fix the faction bug a few weeks ago, and somehow changed the Broken Golem's faction such that any time he spawned, the denizens of the Plane of Fear would attack and kill him. Needless to say, they fixed that in a jiffy.

Not sure if the epic is still broken today, but the invis trick worked for me, and I'm now the proud owner of my epic.

Anyone know if the same hand-in technique would work for class/race combos that have the Sneak (or is it Hide?) ability that is used to trade with low-faction npc's? Or is the buddy-invis trick the only way to do it?

I Just got Oil 5 hours ago, logged back and gave oil to Kandil ... he ate it saying he has nothing to deal with me.
How should this be ... i am considered apprehensive ... i have no cklue on this faction.
Gnome gave me mechanisme twice and does not want oil deal now nor he accept giving me new mechanism.
    Any clues accepted.
    Is this a know bug.
Did any of u came accross this kind of trouble, and how did he got epic then.

I read on another message bord you can get 3 of the 4 staffs by killing Solomen in the Temple of Sol Ro... has anyone actually done this? I would really hate to try this and find out it messed up my Faction for completing the quest.

I went in with about 2 groups of people. It was the easiest overkill ever. I wish I had kept track of VS's spawn time before because this was my first time tracking him and my first time ever in KC and boom he drops the staff the first time. I'm glad I had a little luck after about 10 unsuccesful phinny runs and probably more than 50 unsuccessful phinny groupings. If only the broken golem would spawn at about 1 1/2 days to speed up the damn uber guilds that do nothing but camp it I would be happy. By the way VS probably will take more than 1 raid to drop the staff but maybe you'll get lucky too.
