NOTE: A patch on March 25, 2015, added a work-around to obtain items from Cazic Thule, Dread, Fright, and Terror:

In the Plane of Fear, a harbinger of Fear can help adventurers get their epic 1.0 pieces that would normally drop from Cazic-Thule or the golems. These pieces cannot be multi-quested or traded. In addition, a harbinger of Fear can advance the Whistling Fists quest in the same way as Cazic-Thule.

Full Walkthrough

The quest starts in Nektulos Forest where you must find Venenzi Oberzendi. She is at location -1140, -260 post-post-revamp.

You say, 'Hail, Venenzi Oberzendi'

Venenzi Oberzendi says 'What is it you want! Can't you see I am gathering reagents for my [master]? If I don't get them for him quickly he might punish me.'

You say, 'Who is your master?'

Venenzi Oberzendi says 'You do not know of my teacher? The great Kazen Fe'cae! I am one of his illustrious apprentices! If you fancy yourself a necromancer, travel to Lake Rathetear and tell Kazen you wish to study the dark arts.'

You say, 'What reagents?'

Venenzi Oberzendi says 'My master is working on some great project. He's always busy studying an old text he found and murmuring something about following in the footsteps of Miragul.'

Her Master, Kazen Facae, is at location +340, -1600 in Lake Rathetear.

You say, 'Hail, Kazen Fecae'

Kazen Fecae 's eyes seem to glow as he turns to you and says, 'Leave me be if you have no reason to be here, mortal!'

You say, 'I wish to study the dark arts.'

Kazen Fecae looks you up and down, his eyes glowing with a soft red light. After a moment he begins to speak though his lips do not move. 'You wish to study under me? Perhaps, if you prove yourself to follow the twisted path. If you prove to be as coldhearted as I then I will let you become my servant.'

You say, 'How can I prove myself?'

Kazen Fecae says 'The wandering 'knight' Sir Edwin Motte recently slew one of my lesser servants. This foolish knave travels from town to town pretending to be 'good.' Separate his head from his body and return it to me so I may work my magics upon it. This fool will become another plaything for me, even in death.'

Sir Edwin Motte is a 33rd level Paladin. He is found in four places throughout Norrath. The easiest place to find him is at the Docks in East Freeport. He spawns fairly frequently in Seafarers Roost. Once he has spawned, kill him and loot his head. Bring the head back to Kazen for the Symbol of the Apprentice.

Kazen Fecae says 'Excellent!' You watch Kazen hold the head by the hair and begin to cast a spell. A flash of darkness centers around the head and the eyes of the dead knight open, a terrible scream emanating from its lips. 'This poor fool here - I think I will keep him in my bag from now on. You have done well, my new apprentice. Take this symbol and know that you can do other tasks to advance within my apprentice ranks.'

You say, 'How can I advance?'

Kazen Fecae says 'I share great secrets with my more powerful servants who show me they are willing to serve without question. Tell my servant the name of any symbol he gives you and he will instruct you. If I give you a symbol, speak its name to me so I may instruct you.'

You say, 'What about a symbol of the apprentice?'

Kazen Fecae says 'You have a long way to go before I teach you the true secrets of life and death. Visit Venenzi Oberendi in the Nektulos forest and show her the symbol. She is collecting reagents for one of my experiments and is taking far too long. I do not wish her dead, yet. I simply need the reagents soon. Retrieve the reagents and give them to my assistant Emkel Kabae. I do not wish to handle them myself.'

Take the symbol to Venenzi and she will give you the Twisted Symbol of the Apprentice.

Venenzi Oberzendi says 'I see you serve my master as well now. I assume you are here to take the reagents from me which I have gathered for him? I don't know if I like the idea of you gaining the credit for my hard work here. I might consider giving you these reagents, if only you do a small [task] for me.'

You say, 'What task?'

Venenzi Oberzendi looks down at her robes and back at you. 'There is a certain dark elf magician who has decided to wear the same fashion as I have on several occasions. I do not wish to attend another social gathering in Neriak and look exactly the same as another woman. Slay her and bring me her robe and I will give you my hard earned reagents.'

The robe she speaks of is a Flowing Black Robe. This is dropped in Najena by - you guessed it - Najena. It would surely be quicker to visit The Bazaar and buy one off a player. Regardless of how you obtain it, head back to Venenzi and hand it over.

Venenzi Oberzendi says 'Thank you. I did not think you would track down Najena and slay her. I think that I am going to return to my old life in Neriak. I am sick of the way Kazen has been treating me. He never seems to teach me anything worthwhile. Don't forget to give his lapdog that symbol with the reagents. I'm sure he will give you a new one.'

You will receive a Rolling Stone Moss. Now you will need to go back to Lake Rathetear and find Emkel, Fazen's Apprentice. He is by the stone skeleton tower.

You say, 'Hail, Emkel Kabae'

Emkel Kabae says 'I am Emkel Kabae, first apprentice to Kazen. If you have a symbol, tell me its name.'

Give him the Twisted Symbol of the Apprentice and the moss for the Symbol of the Serpent.

Emkel Kabae says 'Very good, you have done as the master asked yet again, take this as a reward.' Emkel reaches into his robes and pulls out a small symbol. He holds it out and the tiny symbol floats to your hand.

You say, 'What is the symbol of the serpent?'

Emkel Kabae says 'There are more reagents to be gathered. The time draws near for our master's ascension. Travel to the lands of Kunark and seek out Ssessthrass. He is a very wise Iksar herbalist helping me in my endeavor to please Master Kazen. Be careful not to insult his speech, or you may end up dead before you serve your purpose to the master. Be sure to show him the symbol as proof or he may consider you dinner.'

You will need to take this Symbol to Ssessthrass, a named Iksar in the Swamp of No Hope. He is at location +3800, +1600, which is in a house in the pass to go to Field of Bone. He will give you Scaled Symbol of the Serpent.

You say, 'Hail, Ssessthrass'

Ssessthrass says 'I do not wisssh to be bothered.'

Give him the Symbol of the Serpent.

Ssessthrass says 'Sssso, Emkel ssssent you to retrieve the manisi herb? I do not have the herb. The ssssarnak guard the herb. Apparently it is ssssacred to them. Only memberssss of their royal family are allowed to partake of it. They live deep in Chardok. They are hoarding what little of the precious herb there is. If you have an army, perhapssss you can bring me the herb and I can prepare it for Emkel. Bring back this ssssymbol as well.'

Next, head to Chardok and find the Herbalist. His spawn point is at the green house near the bank (first right after you cross the bridge). He doesn't always drop the Manisi Herb, which is what you need from him so you might have to try this more than once. Return to Ssessthrass and give him the Manisi Herb and the Scaled Symbol of the Serpent.

Ssessthrass looks at you and bows. 'You are truly a fearsome sssshadow weaver! Or you have powerful alliessss,' he adds a moment later. Ssessthrass pulls the manisi herb apart and hands a piece to you. 'Emkel will be most pleased with us both!'
You gain experience!!

You receive a Refined Manisi Herb. Head back to Emkel and give him the Refined Manisi Herb.

Emkel Kabae says 'You are truly worthy of studying with our master. Bear this new symbol and contemplate what you wish from life before you let go of it. Ask the master about the symbol of testing and he will explain all. I too was tested by him.' Emkel pulls up his sleeve to show a grievous scar from his wrist to his shoulder.'
You gain experience!!

You receive a Symbol of Testing.

You say, 'Tell me about the symbol of testing'

Emkel Kabae says 'You must ask the master about the symbol of testing. Do not hand the symbol to him for he may interpret that as a breach of conduct.'

Return to Kazen and tell him about the symbol:

You say, 'I have a symbol of testing'

Kazen Fecae says 'Show me that you can overcome larger obstacles and manipulate servants. Gather a force for of mercenaries if you like, or so-called friends, if you desire, and prepare for battle, my promising young student. Return to me with the symbol of testing when you are prepared for battle with my creations. Have no fear, I will not slay you myself. If you do live, tell me the name of the symbol you receive.'

Hand him the Symbol of Testing.

Kazen Fecae says 'As you hand Kazen the symbol, you hear him speak directly into your mind. 'Good luck, my student!' Kazen finishes an incantation and suddenly hands begin to reach up from the ground, as if they were pulling themselves from the grave all around you. A piercing scream fills the air as the creatures advance upon you!'

a bone golem says 'Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!'

A bone golem spawns to the east of Emkel on a little inlet. Upon its death, a failed apprentice spawns and attacks. Upon its death, a tortured soul spawns and attacks as well. You can kill these with two groups of 50+. With a few clerics and tanks, they shouldn't cause trouble. They hit for ~120 and are not overly difficult.

Loot a Symbol of Insanity from a tortured soul.

Upon asking Kazen about the symbol:

You say, 'What do I do with the symbol of insanity?'

Kazen Fecae says 'It is time for you to meet my partner, so to speak. Drendico Metalbones is his name and I assure you he is quite mad. His mind has been rended by fright, dread, and terror in his trips to the planes and his heart is full of hatred now. He has a tome which I wish you to use. Show him your symbol slowly and listen to his rantings well, they hide great knowledge.''

Take the symbol to Drendico Metalbones in Timorous Deep (he is located near the dock that takes you to the Overthere). If you turn right from the docks and climb onto a stoney hill, you will see this little gnome wandering around +6485, +3829.

You say, 'Hail, Drendico Metalbones'

Drendico Metalbones says 'The hills ears keep spinning the wonders of wells. Twisting twisting fly in water scar hot horses. Teach me! Bring floating water islands of doom!'

Give him the symbol.

Drendico Metalbones says 'Seek, search, turn, twist! Kazen hopes to death master truly! Read out, read in between! Talk to the pretty clouds.' Drendico turns his back to you and throws a book over his shoulder. 'Bring back book! Bring back reagents three!!' He shouts as he mumbles some more gibberish.'

You receive his journal. It reads (backwards):

must find for master kazen

feathered spiroc cloak
eye innoruuk of
slime of blood thule cazic

grocery list
milk
bread
soap
fippy snacks

I am quite mad you know
You'll need to pick up a Cloak of Spiroc Feathers, the Eye of Innoruuk, and the Slime Blood of Cazic Thule.

The Eye of Innoruuk drops from mini-bosses in the Plane of Hate (also from Innoruuk himself).

The (Slime) Blood of Cazic Thule is dropped off of Terror and Cazic Thule himself. Needless to say you'll want to bring a few friends for this fight.

To get the Cloak of Spiroc Feathers, complete the linked "Necromancer Test of Power" quest in the Plane of Sky.

Take the cloak, eye, blood, and the journal to Drendico.

Drendico Metalbones turns to you in amazement. 'You actually did it! These are the correct components! Kazen will be most pleased. I searched the planes for almost a year and could not find all the correct components.' Drendico fiddles with the components, puts them into a box and hands it to you. 'You must have access to an army, _____. Return the components to Kazen quickly.'

You receive a Prepared Reagents Box. Take this to Kazen:

Kazen Fecae stares through you at the horizon, pausing as he reaches into his robes. Kazen pulls out a scythe with a shimmering black blade that seems too large to have been hidden there. As quickly and gracefully as it was displayed to you, it is returned to the void inside Kazen's robes. 'It is a creation of Miragul which was looted from his lair under the ice. Take this tome, it will be your final task for me as an apprentice.'

You receive a Tome of Instruction.

Now, head to the Plane of Sky and speak with the Thunder Spirit Princess on the port-up isle.

You say, 'Hail, a thunder spirit princess'

a thunder spirit princess says 'Greetings, travelers, welcome to the Plane of Sky! We are thunder spirits - this first island is our home. You are welcome to stay here as long as you like. If you wish to go to other islands you may purchase keys from the Key Master.'

You say, 'Tell me about Gkzzallk'

a thunder spirit princess says 'Gkzzallk lives far above here. We often take him tea because he's so nice to us fairies! He likes to chat with the others who live here and can often be found in the temple up above. If you give me a bit of money, I can go make sure he is home.'

Give her 10 gold pieces or 1 plat.

a thunder spirit princess says 'Thank you, _____. I will tell him to expect visitors.'

Click up to the third isle where you'll find Gkzzallk.

You say, 'Hail, Gkzzallk'

Gkzzallk says 'Hello Stranger, would you care for some tea?'

Hand him the tome:

Gkzzallk screams as he touches the book. His body shimmers as he shrinks smaller and smaller until it's no larger than an insect. The book shimmers, shifting into the shape of a small, black box. Gkzzallk holds on to the opening of the box as he is sucked backward into it. The tiny screams are finally silenced as the box top closes.

You receive "Gkzzallk in a Box". Take this item to Kazen.

Kazen Fecae grins widely and his eyes flare a deep red. The scythe he promised you flies through the air and into your hand. 'Enjoy your toy, I have no more need of you as a servant.'

You receive the Scythe of the Shadowed Soul.

FACTION?
# Sep 26 2001 at 3:11 PM Rating: Default
Anyone know what faction Kazen (or the faction for the quest) is on? Or how to raise faction with him? I'm dubious right now and have successfully handed in a number of symbols, but he doesn't speak to me. I'm looking for a way to raise my faction a bit before I turn in the later pieces. I'm at the refined manisi herb part of the quest and I don't want to take a chance on losing that. Thanks for any help.

I as well am having a difficult time in finding out what faction he is. I have raised my blood saber for Qeynos evil guilds but I am still dubious. There is no bug as I have asked it checked, just the need to raise faction. A useful response from someone would be very helpful other than thoughtless comment babblings. Now we have been reduced to walking the land begging for a group who we know would prefer to take a Paladin then us. They have done it in Nerfing us since creation, giving us a WHOLE line of spells from Kunark that requires the death of someone 46+ (whos exp is gone forever) to use, and now this planned crap for Luclin everyones talking about.....GUESS WHAT?..IT"S CRAP, like the group ac buff break out spirit armor and give your group members each 24 and save your self tons of mana while getting them 6more AC ( course wed have to be able to find a group first anyways). What really needs to be done is everyone who truely likes there necromancers to write verant (pen and paper style) and send it to them signature required so we know they get them and tell them that we feel our class has been unfairly treated and that Verants group game modo calls for a major change to allow us to be allowed to be better group members!, if your not upto that task atleast email them....and if your not gonna do that then QUIT YOUR ****************

Zlandicar's Heart: Main hand looks like a velium scimitar when held (gay).

+1 Strength +1 Stamina +3 Agility +2 Dexterity +2 Wisdom +20 Intelligence -10 Charisma +5 Magic Resist +5 Fire Resist +5 Cold Resist +5 Posion Resist +5 Disease Resist

effect: Regeneration (stacks with all spell regen)

Common drop off of Zlandicar in Dragon Necropolis.
---------------------------------------
Scythe of the Shadowed Soul: main hand when held looks like a broken stick with a duck head on it. (very gay)

Damage: 22
Delay: 34
Ratio: 1.545 Amazing
Str: +5 Sta: +10 Int: +20 Cha: +5 Magic Resist: +10 Fire Resist: +5 Cold Resist: +5 Poison Resist: +15 Disease Resist: +15 HP: +20 Mana: +80

effect: Torment of Shadows (approx 1200hp dot and nasty snare) VERY VERY VERY VERY resistable.

----------------------------------------

You do the math, ready?

2 items that don't like to drop that often in PoF and PoH. 1 item that is a pain in the *** to get from PoA (requrires multiple ports up). herb in chardok off a rare spawn. *** resistable effect.

VS

Take 35-40 55+ into DN and wack Zlandicar... Comperable stats, better effect for a necro on the heart...

Don't get me wrong I am doing the quest for lack of a better main hand weapon for the time being. But you gotta admit how weak this is....

Ohh and no guild in their right mind would let you have both.

Well, the epic has better resists. The heart's effect is awsome for necros, though.

There is one main reason I am doing the necro epic: It's our epic. There is a sense of accomplishment and honor that comes with it. People respect you more if they see you holding your epic, especialy a necro epic. I know that I respect mages with their epics. Those are HARD. Ours are hard and all but we only have to go to PoA up to the peg isle. They have to go all the way to the drake isle. Yes, the epic effect rotts ***. Yes, it does look fruity. The stats are better, however, and an epic is an epic. Each class's epic is theoreticly the end-all to be-all of quests for them and to complete it is a major accomplishment.
#Anonymous, Posted: Aug 16 2001 at 10:29 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I hear all you guys complaining about the epic, why it sucks and that others are better. BUT!! I never anyone ever post an item that is better than our epic... guess what thats beacsue there is none! I sure as hell want a weapon that gives stats like that. Its win win for necros, dosent give -stats, its a weapon, and who knows maybe they will change stats in the future. And if you do know of a weapon that gives better stats then please send a tell to maltrix on the morel-thule sever. The only thing ill complain about is the effect on weapon shouldnt be a darkness it should be a buff or better yet a foucus item so we can stand a chance with the mage's pets. Just my what I belive.

As far as I know, the epic is NOT a pet focus. (Don't quote me on that but I have never heard anyone say it was) As far as I know, our ONLY focus is Encyclopedia Necrotheurgia in the Plane of Hate off the Ashenbone Broodmaster. The Broodmaster is on a 3 day spawn and this is a rare drop off him plus you have to be level 46+ to even enter the zone. Seeing as you are level 10, I think it is safe to say that you will not have your focus item for a veeery long time. (It really sucks. Necros need to have an easier focus. The one up-side is that everyone is very impressed when they see my Encyclopedia.)

Scythe of the Shadowed Soul is NOT, repeat NOT a focus item (verant SHOULD of put that there, but no love for us necros) They also should of changed the effect on the item (honestly it should of been some type of lifetap or Wicked regen effect, Hell even a new type of fear, or new type of darkness <one that isn't resisted as much as this version is>).

But, to note, the stats on the item are GREAT nonetheless.

The Necro focus item loads in hate is called Encyclopedia Necrotheurgia loads of Ashenbone Drakes, Lord of Loathing(which can also drop eye of Inny) and Inny himself.

Multi Quest

im thinking about multiquesting this item, i have the ct blood and eye and cape, but not the herb. a friend has the herb part done up to insanity, so it would require him turning it in in timorous deep, getting the journal, heading to sky w/ both chars, him handing in the journal, then me h anding in the 3 itmes.. i heard that you need to do all steps on epic weapons but i noticed that there is no faction on the necro epic? comments/concerns? btw chardock is a ghost town gona take months to get a raid there just for herb..

Each to their own ofcourse :) Some people go for looks, others for performance. Personally I dont think EQ is a fashion parade therefor I go for performance. The end result is Necros have been totally jibbed with their epic. Fancy and Epic weapon with a spell effect thats worse than a spell we already have! Personally i would like to see a summon corpse spell that requires no components. That would be useful to a group. Speaking of which I simply do not understand the logic of groups not wanting Necros for anything but mana batteries. We have the same spell as the necro epic weapon that snares and does 12 points damage, superb for mobs that only take 30 odd second to kill. We have EB which does huge amounts of damage in a short space of time. We have charm undead spells. Infact a large group of people didn't want my company when going into Karnors. Complete stupidity not wanting a necro in a place full of undead. I feel that we are prolly the most under utilized class for groups simply because people dont realize what we are capable of. Wake up verant, you have i believe the vast majority of necro completely confused with the logic of this epic weapon and it should be changed.

Stay safe all :)

We do have a resistance de-buffer, try using that, really good. De-buffs everything our dots use, cept fire, i think, hehe. Thats to you, Raabe

What about or magic based dots (splurt and the darknesses and such) scent of terris dosn't debuff magic.... it debuffs fire, poison and disease. The three that MOST of our dots use.

ebolt easy to resist and shamans get bane of nife which is more dmg same time, this snare and our darknesses are so unbelievably easy to resist and uber mobs have uber resists ;), lets go over what all we can do on a big raid, splurt doesnt do dmg quick enough, pyrorcuror...but only 1 necro can cast it, our other dots would probably all get resisted...all we can really do is feed mana and watch our pets get feared

as for group in KC, group with a few friends and get other people to join, if you know what you are doing and can effectively mez/heal/dot you will get a good name quick and more people wont mind grouping with you...trust me it works ;)

The effect is a darkness spell that dose 12000 ian a min or so. And you must take in to fact it is 1HB so you can hold something in the other hand to improve the stats you ppl don't like. Other epic weapons are two hand. Just trying to so you guys that be happy with what you can get in this game and take every thing in to consideration before you say it sucks.

If you want to compare it to other epics, do it accurately.

Only 2 epics are 2h weapons, pally and sk.
Every other epic has an effect that the owner never has w/o it (except the 56 cleric rez). This one? A level 49 spell necros already have but with a longer cast time.

Compare the resists, this one ties for the lowest.
Compare stats, this one ties for the lowest.

Then ask around and find out how many people are willing to help a necromancer obtain it. Since the effect does absolutely nothing for a group or guild, they're not exactly jumping at the oportunity. Then ask how many will help a cleric get theirs.

While you're asking compare the 2.
The cleric epic is also a 1hb, but has 20 more mana, the base attribute is 25(wis) whereas the nec epic has 20(int). Clerics' also have better resists, and a spell effect 7 levels higher.

other than pally, sk, and 1 form of war which ones are 2h?(btw i hope u didnt mean to put that extra 0 on 1200)
the effect does suck, i've talked to a few dif necros that have it, they have all told me its resisted 90-99% of the time
scythe looks stupid

I'm sorry but a necromancer is supposed to look evil...a duck head on a staff with cute white bubbles floating gracefully off of it is NOT evil. Try a green mist coming off of an evil looking book or something.

Very nice addition. I was about to do the same thing, myself. Unfortunatly the post came a little late for me. I barely knew what to expect and was horribly unprepared for the resists. I would like to add, though.

The tormented soul is also level 55. Each spawn is right next to the tree next to Kazen. You kill one, the next one immediatly spawns next to the tree. At least two, if not all 3 cast. I believe that the bone golem casts a dot (or at least it had the spell graphics that suggested that) and the tormented soul has a 800 point HT so you're going to need someone beefy to eat it (or send the poor necro in with harmshield hehe). Our highest level slower was a level 55 shammy and he was unable to slow the first and third spawns. They are most likely unslowable.

I had 14 people there including myself and we had 2 deaths the whole time. Both where casters and they only died on the tormented soul. I believe it was because I had instructed them to slow when I now realise that was a mistake. For our melees, I had only 2 warriors, a monk, a rogue, a bard and a ranger. Our healers consisted of a cleric (level 59, that helped) 2 shammys and a druid. We also had me, 2 chanters and a wizard. Only one shammy, the cleric and the ranger where level 55+. Everyone else was generaly 50-54. It is really not as difficult as you made it sound but a caster heavy group is deffinatly NOT the way to go here. The tormented soul will eat you. Let the main tank build aggro on the soul and then let the other melees jump in for a few seconds before the casters even start casting. I had the cleric and a shammy as backup healer with the melees that would draw the most aggro in the first group, I had another shammy as a healer for the second group and I had the druid with one other low aggro person in the third group that was mostly assist healing.

If you keep the general setup that I described here, you should wipe the floor with the golems and the tormented soul. A caster heavy group WILL die so melee is the key here. The ideal group, I believe, would be a 54+ warrior as the MT, 3-4 more tank types, 2 clerics, 2 backup healers, and 3-4 support classes (one of them being you) making a total of 12 people, or two full groups.

Thanks for your addition Reegor, I am in complete agreement with your group makeup. Sadly my guild is currently tank deprived though both of our tanks, (rofl yes we only have two) a Level 51 Pal and a Level 50 monk were there. And you are correct - we were literally eaten alive. I may have failed to mention that most of our guild was well under 50 at the time.

I don't however recall either the bone golem or the second mob casting at all and the only spell the Tormented Soul cast was summon, he also failed to HT the puller so we may have simply been even luckier than we were.

Remember to have along a second necro in case the second mod drops two apprentice rings like he did for me - it is such a nice item it is a real waste to lose the second one.
Darkness Change
# Apr 27 2001 at 1:59 PM Rating: Default
They SHOULD turn this darkness spell into a really long snare, without all the damage. Like a Druid's snare spell, with only 300 damage or something like that. Necromancers sometimes need more than 1 minute and 36 seconds in order to fully kill a mob.
