This quest is working since the March 14, 2018 patch after having been long broken.

    You say, 'Hail, Jondin'

Jondin says 'Greetings, friend. I have many fine herbs for sale. My prices are reasonable for I am not governed by the [Haggle Baron]. If you fancy yourself an adventurer, I would like to hire you for a [simple mission].'

    You say, 'What simple mission?'

Jondin says 'I actually have a few items I am presently low on. I would appreciate some assistance to [collect fern flowers] or maybe you are an alchemist who can [gather bone chips].'

You say, 'how do I collect fern flowers?'

Jondin says 'I have run low on fern flowers and must have more of them. Take this [flower pouch]. Outside the city can be found carnivorous plants and a strain of them buds the flower in question. Collect enough of these flowers to fill and combine the pouch and I shall reward you.'

Receive: Fern Flower Pouch, a 4 slot container.

Fern Flowers are a common drop from any of the "man-eating" plants found in Swamp of No Hope, collect four of them and combine them in the pouch to create a Full Fern Flower Pouch.

Give the Full Fern Flower Pouch to Jondin.

Jondin says, 'Thank you for your service my good friend. Here is a small reward and please accept this item which I procured in one of my many visits to the Outlands.'

Your faction standing with Brood of Kotiz has been adjusted by 2.
Your faction standing with Legion of Cabilis has been adjusted by 1.
    You gain experience!!

Receive: Small amount of coin 1-9 gold, and a Frogskin shield.

Prathun, on the official Everquest boards, has confirmed that this quest is currently unfinished. At least one of the items that is required for the quest (presumably the one that Tethrindaen's GM used) is not attached to any monster's loot table and will never drop. Prathun has promised to submit a ticket to get this quest fixed.

Prathun claims it has been fixed internally. Let's see on the next patch if it shows up!

Can't wait. Interested to see if the quest leads anywhere else or solves any items currently in the database not attached to anything.

Knowing SOE back then though the reward will be a few silver and maybe some slush water / curscale armor if you get lucky.

I read the forum that Darchias linked in his post. Interesting stuff and great that at least one of the team is looking at old school quest. I enjoy the old school content. I saw the list of broken quest and wanted to know if you guys want to add another one to that list. The Telescope quest which involves the lens from the named in beholder but now doesn't spawn. Instead the lens is suppose to come from an evil eye in runnyeye but no one has been able to get this quest done yet.

Had forgotten all about that quest, thanks for the reminder. I mentioned it in the thread, maybe Prathun will bless us again.

Of the 5 man eating plants, the common drop between them is A Twisted Stalk.

    QUEST ITEM
    WT: 0.5 Size: TINY
    Class: NONE
    Race: NONE

Since the Fern Flower Pouch only holds tiny items and this item is the only tiny item common between the plants, it's a safe bet. Soon as I can, I will run the quest to confirm.

Good idea - collected four of the twisted stalks and tried to combine them in the pouch but unfortunately it refused :/

It's interesting to note in the quest text Jondin mentions the [flower pouch] - I'm wondering if this is the key to continuing this quest. It's a long shot but perhaps the player needs to do something to the stalks before they will combine?

I asked a GM to confirm that the quest was working as intended and he said he tried the bag combine with the mystery component and it was working! So that puts paid to the theories about size errors on the man eater buds. Keep thinking, this quest can still be cracked :)
    hmm
    # May 15 2007 at 10:24 AM Rating: Decent
there are man eating FERNS in Swamp of no hope.

    http://eqbeastiary.allakhazam.com/search.shtml?id=4075

maybe the buds that drop off of them...

    or their stalks?

idk but it says a certain "strain" which means a certain type only works.

so figure the plant out first then kill.

    that's what I'm doing.
    Probably another STUPID quest
    # Jul 04 2003 at 9:47 PM Rating: Decent
This is probably another STUPID SOE quest that leaves you with an item you cannot use. Example, the catfish croak sandwiches you needed. It took forever to get the honeymush bread, and when you finally got the combine, gave the sandwiches, yes (2) of 'em, ... you get a coif that a monk cannot/wouldn't wear anyways!!! Take this quest and shovel it, Sony! BTW, ... I spent several RT days hunting the surrounding zones for fern flowers, .. another waste of time. As for the common quests, by the time you get high enough to do them, the rewards are substandard to what you are wearing at the moment!!!

Don't post until you have solved the quest. This quest has only to do with 'carnivorous plants'. Not lichenclover, or FV flowers. OK? The only things you can get man eater buds from, are from man eating plants, not from foraging them.

    # Apr 14 2002 at 3:37 PM Rating: Default
I agree with this person. The quest specifies fern flowers, not maneater buds. If you pay attention, you also note that fern flowers are looted off of monsters, not foraged. I'm presently killing maneating ferns, wish me luck :)
    RE: don't post
    # Dec 03 2003 at 6:02 PM Rating: Decent
I have spent many hours killing maneating plants of all kinds in SoNH and I've never seen a "fern flower" drop from them. The only flower-like item which they drop is a maneater bud, which can also be foraged in the same zone. The icon for a maneater bud is a flower.

In the swamp of no hope you can forage man eater buds but no where else.

For those who haven't got the log of the conversations in front of them I decided to post this. The bone chips refer to a solved quest.

    You say, 'Hail, Jondin'
Jondin says 'Greetings, friend. I have many fine herbs for sale. My prices are reasonable for I am not governed by the [Haggle Baron]. If you fancy yourself an adventurer, I would like to hire you for a [simple mission].

You say, 'who is the haggle baron?'
Jondin says 'Haggle Baron Klok Dun Ree is the current Haggle Baron. It is written in the law that all services shall be governed by the Haggle Baron. To do business outside of the law is forbidden, but the merchants of the Tower of Death are exempt from this rule. Klok will not test the temper of the Harbinger and Baron Eator will not upset his most powerful ally.

    You say, 'what simple mission?'
Jondin says 'I actually have a few items I am presently low on. I would appreciate some assistance to [collect fern flowers] or maybe you are an alchemist who can [gather bone chips].

You say, 'how do I collect fern flowers?'
Jondin says 'I have run low on fern flowers and must have more of them. Take this [flower pouch]. Outside the city can be found carnivorous plants and a strain of them buds the flower in question. Collect enough of these flowers to fill and combine the pouch and I shall reward you.

    Foraged items...
    # Sep 25 2001 at 11:52 AM Rating: Decent
Lichenclover can be foraged in Firiona Vie and Frontier Mountains. Cursed Clover of Viesar only in The Overthere.

I have theories about both of those items being used in baking. A Cabilis East merchant sells Lichenclover Sweet Bread, and an Iksar Shaman quest yields a Cursed Wafer.

I've yet to test and see if I can create anything from these, but I am definitely open to the possibility of a correlation between the 2 foraged items and the 2 food items and I encourage you to test this out.
    Flowers
    # Sep 19 2001 at 3:54 PM Rating: Default
The flower from FV is "Rose of Firiona" used in druid/ranger epic.
The flower from FM is called "Drench Flower" and cannot be sold (worthless to vendors).
There's 2 kinds of clover, one is Lichenclover, forget from which zone, other is a cursed/bad luck clover from OT which I forget the name of.
Mantrap roots are for a druid quest in FV, gets you a crappy 2HB staff with 3 charges of charm plant. Ha.
I'd go with the consensus at maneater bud is just marked as too big (or the container is too small) to fit.
    Sizing Error
    # Sep 04 2001 at 1:05 AM Rating: Default
    ManEater buds do not Fit.
Man eater buds are small. This bag requires a Tiny Item Flower of which I have not yet seen any.

Firiona Vie Flower Buds might fit..I havent tried those.
    read the description
    # Aug 31 2001 at 2:43 PM Rating: Default
If you read the caption on top, and I am not saying it is accurate since I havent talked to Jondin myself, that it requires you to get the fern items off of the Carnivorous plants, which means you have to kill the plant and get its loot. Now I am sure I have seen multiple types of plants in the swamp with another of my characters and I am pretty sure that is the case. Good hunting.
    I think i know..
    # Jul 12 2001 at 4:54 AM Rating: Default
Well i think i know what it is, its the Maneater Buds, u get these by foraging.
I got this while doin it in Swamp of No Hope, Hope this helps.
Although i never bothered to finish the quest, im pretty sure this is it.
I found that these flowers where Uncommon.
I believe that its these buds because the quest is a newbie quest, and they usally are fairly easy to obtain.

    Correct me if im wrong

Seeing recently Verrant has made a slew of sizing errors with items and other items being ment as rings fitted for belt slots. I reported this as a Bug. Lets hope they will fix this. It seems all to much like a Shaman Specific quest.

Im betting they have the flowers marked at the wrong size. Since Joster mentions specifically the Swamp and Man eating Plants.

    It's called a maneater bud.
    Roots maybe?
    # Mar 13 2001 at 7:52 PM Rating: Default
I have seen the Erollisi Mantraps drop roots commonly. I am gonna try combining 4 of them in there for the heck of it.

    # Jul 12 2001 at 4:45 AM Rating: Default
I dont think its off those because its a newbie quest, But here is what i think...While hunting down in Swamp of No Hope i came across a ManEater Bud, i received this from constant forageing, im assuming you can only get it in the Swamp. I would say that the bud isnt rare, or common...so bassiacally its Uncommon i guess you could say. Hope this helps.

I noticed that you could forage a maneater flower in the swamp zone.. maybe thats what goes in the pouch.

The Foraged Maneater Flower is too big to fit in the pouch he gives you. I'm not sure where you get these fern flowers, I have killed dozens of man-eating shrubs, ferns, plants, etc... and never received a flower as loot.
