This quest begins with a giant named Edmuund (click for map image) in the Plane of War's Castle Rulnavis.

Note: Despite Edmuund being located in Castle Rulnavis, he's actually on Castle Tamrel faction, and you will need Castle Tamrel faction in order to interact with him.

Pre-Requisites for Triggering the Quest:
- Warmly faction with "Castle Tamrel" (see this quest)
- No other quests.

Summary

- Hail Edmuund, say "worthy soldiers", say "test".
- Turn in 4x "Heart of the Colossus" (drop from "a strife colossus" and "a Zekarian colossus") to receive "Display Case".
- Combine 4x "Champion Blade" (drop from "a Gindan champion") in the Case to produce a "Sealed Display Case".
- Turn in "Sealed Display Case" to Edmuund.
- Say "challenge" to Edmuund.
- Under the maze in Frostcrypt, pick up "Gorod's Medallion" (ground spawn) to spawn "Icecore" nearby.
- Kill Icecore; loot "Aelfgir's Signet Ring" from its corpse.
- Turn in "Gorod's Medallion" and "Aelfgir's Signet Ring" to Edmuund.
- Say "Plane of Tactics" to receive "Edmuund's Message".
- Go to the basement blacksmith area of the Plane of Tactics (/loc 1330, 1000, -327) and wait for NPC "Soke of Storms" to spawn.
- Turn in "Edmuund's Message" and, when ready for a fight, say "Yes, go now" (no mercenaries in the room for this fight).
- DPS Soke of Storms to 10% and say to him "message" to receive "Soke's Missive".
- Turn in "Edmuund's Message" and "Soke's Missive" to Edmuund to spawn "Edmuund the Bold" nearby.
- Defeat Edmuund the Bold and hail him to complete the quest.

Triggering the Quest

You say, 'Hail, Edmuund'

Edmuund says 'Hello tiny soldier. You know, when I was young I didn't have time for things like chess. We'd have been embarrassed wasting time on such a thing. We were out hunting, defeating foes, and bringing war to the world. I miss those days. Sure, I can beat these punks at chess, I've always had a tactical mind. Guess I just lack challenge here. That surprises me, considering where we are and how many supposedly worthy soldiers reside here.'

You say, 'Worthy soldiers?'

Edmuund says 'There are many great soldiers and leaders here, but none that match my skill. Hrmph. As a youth I strode the battlefields of Norrath and had opportunities to be defeated. Here few will accept my challenges. Perhaps you could test some of my potential foes to determine if they are worthy?'

You say, 'I could test your foes'

Edmuund says 'Ah, good. At my age it's not worth getting up for weak or stupid foes. So, who shall you test? Perhaps one of those great colossi would be strong enough? Test them, and if you can bring proof of their weakness to me. If you can take four of their hearts then clearly they are no challenge for me.'

Heart of the Colossus & Strife Champions

Kill "a strife colossus" and/or "a Zekarian colossus" (these line the southern boundaries of the Field of Strife and the zone-in field, respectively) until you've looted 4x "Heart of the Colossus".

Turn in the four Hearts:

Edmuund says 'If they give up their hearts that easily, then they surely can't be a challenge for me. Hrmph! Well, there are some here that call themselves champions. They tend to pick fights in the inner courtyard, usually with those they know they can beat or bully. Test their mettle for me. Maybe one of them is worth the effort to get up and go out there to crush them. If not, bring me some trophies.'

You receive a "Display Case" (4-slot container). In this container, combine 4x "Champion Blade" (dropped by "a Gindan champion" in the Field of Strife) to produce a "Sealed Display Case".

Turn in the "Sealed Display Case" to Edmuund:

Edmuund says 'It seems they were not as skilled as they thought they were. Well, that was not unexpected. Perhaps we are looking for the wrong kind of challenge. This place should be crawling with master strategists and tacticians, though Vallon knows I haven't found any. I haven't been challenged tactically since my father and I sparred when I was young. It was never about strength, especially for me. Gorod was very strong, probably stronger than I was in my prime. No, our battles were always about position, awareness, and skill. I could touch him, sometimes, even when he was twice my size. By the time I was grown he had given up the game, claiming that Harfange business kept him too busy. That was when I knew even he was not my equal. I don't expect you to find me an equal, just a challenge.'

You say, 'I could find you a challenge'

Edmuund says 'Perhaps... There was a challenge that the young sometimes took, back when I was a child. We'd sneak into the crypt and leave something in the storage room to the very rear, something that could prove to others that we were there. Only I ever succeeded, the rest were caught and punished, and in my father's day the punishment was harsh. Perhaps you could go there and gather any trinkets you find. Perhaps someone succeeded after my time and I could seek that worthy person out. I have heard that the crypts have changed much since I was there last, all I can tell you is that I placed it in the basement under the storage area, the place where they sometimes stored corpses if there was need for them to be removed from their sarcophagus, for repairs or some such thing.'

To The Serpent's Spine Mountains

Head to Frostcrypt in The Serpent's Spine Mountains, into the maze, and to the area underneath the maze.

There are four entrances to the area under the maze - one at each of the maze's four corners. At each location is a glowing floor panel that you can target: "a block of ice". Destroy this and drop down.

There, you'll find "Gorod's Medallion" as a ground spawn. Upon picking up this item, a mob called "Icecore" should spawn nearby (this mob is trackable). Icecore hits for a max ~17,000. Kill Icecore and loot "Aelfgir's Signet Ring" from its corpse.

NOTE: You must have previously turned in the "Sealed Display Case" in order to get Icecore to spawn for you.

Head back to Edmuund and turn in "Gorod's Medallion" and "Aelfgir's Signet Ring":

Edmuund says 'Well, that's the medallion I stole from my father to place in the crypt. Honestly, taking that medallion was trickier than getting into the back of the crypt. This... this ring is clearly of my house. In fact, this could only be Aelfgir's sigil.' A smile breaks across his face, 'Wonderful news.' He then scowls. 'Such darkness was in him. He would surely be a challenge to my skills, but he can never come here. None of my kin could, I suppose. Our betrayal was deep and impossible to forgive, our refusal to go to war is something that Rallos will never forget.'

You say, 'How did you get here?' (If this doesn't work, try "How forgive?")

Edmuund says 'How did I get here? Ah, well, that is a long story, and not one I am willing to divulge entirely. In short, I pleaded with our god of war to allow his children back into his army, but I was denied. His son, however, heard my cries of agony and knew of my skill. He set upon me challenges, not unlike you have undertaken on my behalf. I proved my worth to him and have earned my place here. Perhaps my displeasure at the lack of challenges for me here comes from comparison to those tasks set for me by lord Vallon. It dishonors me to be discontent here, but there is nothing to be done about it. Being content seems sinful to me, as it usually prevents skill growth. Stagnation is a problem for all warriors.'

You say, 'What about this problem?'

Edmuund says 'Yes, we still have not found a solution to my problem. Perhaps there is no solution. Tell me, where are the greatest military minds?'

You say, 'The Plane of Tactics, of course...'

Edmuund says 'Ah, that may be true. In fact, I heard a tale of a goblin that resides there. He has earned his place, but being so small he is not respected by the ogres. Ogres tend to respect bulk more than brains. Rallos Zek is not so foolish and has welcomed the goblin to Drunder. This goblin is called... let me remember... Soke of Storms, I believe. He founded a school of martial prowess under the rule of some dragons, and his teaching impressed the God of War. Perhaps he could challenge me. Take this message to him as an invitation.'

You receive "Edmuund's Message".

Soke of Storms

Head to the Plane of Tactics to the blacksmith area. An NPC named "Soke of Storms" should appear in a room near here, at about 1330, 1000, -327. This NPC doesn't seem to always be up. You may need to stay in the area a bit before he appears, or it may be a proximity spawn for players who are in this step of the quest (spawning mechanism is not confirmed).

Hand "Edmuund's Message" to Soke of Storms:

Soke of Storms says 'Ah, well. I do not know of this Edmuund of Valdeholm. I am certain his skill is great, but leaving here would not be simple. I would have to know the challenger was worthy. Perhaps as his messengers you represent him in this? Perhaps you can show me your skill and I can estimate the skill of your master from yours? Will you accept this challenge?'

He gives the message back to you. If you stay around and do nothing for long enough (15 mins?), he says this:

Soke of Storms says 'I guess you aren't as dedicated as your master thought. I shall forget you were here.'

You can hand in "Edmuund's Message" again.

You say, 'Yes, go now' (One of these words is the update trigger.)

Soke of Storms says 'Good. We should begin at once. We shall remain here, in this space. We must confine our conflict or we shall be interrupted.'

Soke of Storms goes aggro and attacks. This is a timed encounter: If you don't DPS Soke fast enough, it resets, making you try again. If you have mercenaries up while in the room, they get suspended. Mercenaries outside the room remain up.

When Soke of Storms reaches 10% health, he goes non-aggro and says:

Soke of Storms says 'Ah, you have defeated me. I am not worthy of your master. Come, I have a [message] for him.'

You say, 'What message?'

Soke of Storms says 'Clearly you are more skilled than I. I apologize for my weakness. I am unworthy to challenge your master. Please bring to him this message and offer him my congratulations.'

You receive "Soke's Missive".

Note: If you say "message" to him before fighting him, or if you took too long to kill him and got the "not dedicated" message, he says:

Soke of Storms says 'You are not the one to deliver this message.'

Edmuund the Bold

Head back to Castle Rulnavis in the Plane of War, and give Edmuund "Soke's Missive" and "Edmuund's Message":

Edmuund says 'So, there is no worthy challenger. With one possible exception. I know of someone that has proven their skills by defeating many great warriors here in the Plane of War. Someone that has proven to me several times their skill. You, of course. You are the perfect foe to challenge me. Come, prepare yourself. We shall battle in the room directly to the west immediately.'

Edmuund despawns while "Edmuund the Bold" appears in the room directly west of you. Mobs will not assist him, so he is easily singled and relatively easily beaten. He hits for a max reported ~17,000 and initially comes buffed with a rune:

Shield of Iron: Self 0', Unresistable (0)
1: Increase Absorb Damage by 900000

Once the rune is broken, you see:

Edmuund the Bold says 'Ah, well, you've ruined my shield. But a good soldier has many tools at his disposal.'

And he adds an AE to his arsenal:

Crush: PB AE 90', Chromatic (-700)
1: Decrease Hitpoints by 75000
2: Stun (3.00 sec)

After you defeat him, you see:

Edmuund the Bold says 'Well done! It is good to know that I am not the last great warrior. I am grateful to you for your efforts on my behalf. May Rallos bless your blade and may Vallon keep your mind sharp. Speak to me, I would like to thank you.'

You say, 'Hail, Edmuund the Bold'

Edmuund the Bold says 'Thank you for your indulgence of an old soldier.'

This completes the quest.

Rewards:
425 platinum
Experience (about 2.5% regular exp in Level 100 or 6 AAs)

After completion of this quest, Edmuund becomes unresponsive, so this quest doesn't appear to be repeatable.

What is required to get to the maze area?

Unfortunately I cannot check ingame what I miss in progression or requirements since there are no entries for Mercenary, Partisan or Progression tasks.

*edit* It's much easier than to hunt for a key etc.: Left of the statue are torches which can be clicked, causing a statue blocking the way to move. */edit*

You can avoid waiting for 15 minutes for Soke of Storms to become active by saying "Yes I accept the challenge". He will them immediately before active and you can beat him down to 5% and continue the quest.

Do you say this to Edmuund before going to Plane of Tactics or do you just say this in the room where Soke of Storms appears?

You have to say this to Soke within 15 minutes after he rejected the message from Edmuund.

My group cleared room and Edmuund despawned right before engage...looks like I'll have to start over from the beginning.

You might mention that since this task is a real PITA because of the champion swords.

Spawns in the room through the door West of Edmuund near the South side, best to clear the single mob there before you hand in the two letters to spawn him, seemed to be A Hendin ravager or an armored ravager. Initially we tried pulling him out of the room but he leashed so simpler to just fight him where he pops. He has an initial rune which isn't very powerful then seems to cast "Crush" once his rune is down, 75k PBAE with 3 second stun and small knockback. Max hit on me 17k with alot of hits under 10k.

He spawned for us at 6pm game time so could be a night spawn.

So, I did this entire quest. Beat Edmuund the Bold down, he gave me success chat, server lagged for about two seconds (has been on and off for the past week) and I haled him immediately as able. He turned back to regular Edmuund and walked away. Thinking that with my log of the success text and etc. and not thinking they would design a quest to fail the entire thing during final hail, I petitioned customer service. My response was:

Hail Mistatk,
I'm sorry to hear about your trouble with Edmuund's Plight! Unfortunately, if the NPC isn't hailed quickly after defeat, you must start the quest over from the beginning.
Good Day,
GM Anundr
Sony Online Entertainment

So yeah, be really careful on final step or your starting over.

Having just worked up faction on another toon I was able to finally narrow down the exact level needed to get Edmuund to respond positively to you and officially offer you the quest. +750 (warmly) is the magic number to be able to get a response out of edmuund via hail.

There are no additional requirements besides this.

The respawn on Gorod's Medallion and Icecore is ~ 5 minutes. Icecore hits about as hard as most PoWar mobs, but has a lot less HP (~3 million).

Edmuund will be dismissive of you if your faction is indifferent or lower, however he does seem to reply to the first two 'trigger' phrases positively.

His faction is actually based on Tamrel NOT Rulnavis. If you are Ally to Tamrel is replies very positively to you (with no other pre-reqs) However if you are indifferent he shrugs you off.

So the requirement for him is likely to be amiable, kindly, warmly, or ally (it works for sure at low ally)

You can find the medallion ground spawn under the maze in Frostcrypt, the entrance is at:
Location 1775.52, 168.31, -261.58
It will be a glowing floor panel that you can target: 'a block of ice', kill it and drop down.

After handing in the medallion and ring, Edmuund says:

Edmuund says 'Well, that's the medallion I stole from my father to place in the crypt. Honestly, taking that medallion was trickier than getting into the back of the crypt. This... this ring is clearly of my house. In fact, this could only be Aelfgir's sigil.' A smile breaks across his face, 'Wonderful news.' He then scowls. 'Such darkness was in him. You say, 'problem'
Edmuund says 'Yes, we still have not found a solution to my problem. Perhaps there is no solution. Tell me, where are the greatest military minds?'

At which point you say 'plane of tactics'.

After you complete Edmuund's quest he will no longer respond to trigger words.

Soke is time based to 10% if you do not get him down fast enough he will not found you worthy and will have to start over untill he does.
