These items are all dropped by various mobs in the three heroic adventures available from Captain Russell Cooper in the Dead Hills (click for map image).

Hand in any one of these items to Archivist Dominic Moore (click for map image) in the Dead Hills to receive an "Archaeologist's Automated Antiquity Analyzer".

You say, 'Hail, Archivist Dominic Moore'

Archivist Dominic Moore says 'Welcome, _____. It is good to see new faces around here. I am Dominic Moore, head archivist in charge of cataloguing and storing all important [relics] we unearth from the ruins of the Qeynosian expedition party. If you come across anything that appears to be of historical significance, I would gladly reward you with what funds our camp has available.'

You say, 'What relics?'

Archivist Dominic Moore says 'Any relics you come across when scouting the valley leading to the Tower of Rot are of interest, though I am primarily concerned with piecing together facts about the lives of the men and women who escorted Sir Kyle Bayle to this dead land. Things such as books, letters, and family heirlooms are all integral to reconstructing the history of who these brave souls were. Anything new you are able to deliver will be worth a modest coin reward.'

If you hand him something that he's not interested in, you'll see something like this:

Archivist Dominic Moore holds the Dig Site Instructions you have handed to him and surveys it curiously before speaking. 'Interesting, but not something I'm looking for.' He then hands it back to you.

If you hand him one of the items he's looking for, you'll see this:

Archivist Dominic Moore pauses, 'Hmm, someone contributing to our cause like this should have the [necessary tools] to navigate the dangerous traps found in dig sites.'

Archivist Dominic Moore holds the Torn Excavation Report and surveys the relic with keen interest. A few seconds pass before he smiles and reaches into his pocket to grab a few coins to reward you for your troubles. His voice is tinged with excitement, 'An excellent find indeed, _____. I shall catalogue this discovery and add it to our archives. Thank you for your help today.'

You say, 'What necessary tools?'

Archivist Dominic Moore turns to his pack of supplies and produces an impressive clockwork machine. He hands it to you and smiles, 'No archaeologist should be without such an ingenious device. Its usefulness will improve as you collect more relics for our cause. In the meantime, it should serve as a suitable instrument for disarming the dangers that lie between you and historical treasures.'

You receive the "Archaeologist's Automated Antiquity Analyzer".

This is under the CotF Conquest listing, it should appear as a translucent red bar with a red padlock symbol over the achievement's symbol of a book.
Once you give Moore your first item you can open the bar to see the details of the achievement.

it only took me two combines to get the Opened Locket:

once you get the Rusted Locket out of the letter, you can skip the Identify step. just go straight to a brew barrel and do the Firewater + Rusted Locket combine, and you'll get the "The Firewater bubbles on the surface of the rusted locket" message.

now take the Rusted Locket and combine in a forge with the Taanan Smithing Hammer which will give you the "You gently tap the still bubbling locket with your hammer and watch as it opens" message and voila you now have the Opened Locket to turn into Archivist Dominic Moore.

if for some reason you do not receive the Opened Locket after the initial smithing combine, just do the Firewater combine again, and then the Hammer combine again.
Couple of things I found out

1) Don't just stand there clicking. If you get the frustrated message, just zone. Try again and if you get the frustrated message, zone back. Much faster. I left autofire clicking the thing every second for over 2 hours... Not necessary
2) You can skip the Identify step I think, just go for the firewater combine. I certainly never got the message about bubbling etc.

Finished

Is the Identify AA working? Because of cast it over 200 time and seem no emote or change of any kind.
And the firewater and the rusted locket will not combine in brewing barrel:(

For this item, you must use a different procedure from normal use of the Identify spell:

In this case, you must equip the Rusted Locket in your primary slot, target yourself, then cast Identify a few times.

Normally the person who wants an item identified holds it on their cursor, then they or someone else casts Identify on them.

But this time, notice that "Suspicion" is a focus effect on "Rusted Locket", and it only fires if you cast Identify. So you MUST equip the locket otherwise the focus effect has no chance of firing.

Did you target yourself and have the item on the cursor? works fine for me.

Give the Tearstained Love Letter to Archivist. This updates the achievement, but he returns the Letter to you, indicating there is more to be discovered.

Text within the Letter's item window indicates the letter is unusually heavy. Right-clicking the letter opens it for reading. Right-click and read the letter a number of times and you'll start getting chat messages about becoming frustrated. After enough clicks, eventually the letter poofs and you receive a Rusted Locket bearing the focus effect Suspicion. The Suspicion focus effect references the spell Identify.

Upon giving the Rusted Locket to Archivist:
Archivist Dominic Moore nods as you recount how the locket fell out of the envelope. He holds the pendant up to the light and frowns, 'The clasp is rusted shut. If you could find a way to open it, it would be a more significant addition to the relics in the archive.

After repeatedly casting Identify on the Locket, a message eventually appeared:
The softest touch of Tanaan's force after a steep in the Water of Flame.

Combining the Locket with Firewater in a brew barrel resulted in the message:
The Firewater bubbles on the surface of the rusted locket.

Combining the Rusted Locket with a Taanan Smith Hammer in a Taanan forge in PoK resulted in the message:
You strike the rusted locket with your hammer but nothing happens.

Repeat the process of brew > forge > brew > forge a number of times, eventually the forge combine resulted in the message:
You gently tap the still bubbling locket with your hammer and watch as it opens.
Receive: Opened Locket.

Upon giving the Opened Locket to the Archivist:
Archivist Dominic Moore carefully holds the locket up to the light, unlatching the hinge and inspecting the image inside. He nods, 'This artifact tells a particularly sad story. I knew if anyone would be capable of unlocking the pendant's secrets it would be you, Tobynn. Thank you once again for your efforts.'
You receive 3 gold .
You receive 222 platinum .

This updates the "Secret" achievement.

The identify part on the Rusted Locket is optional. Got myself an item with Identify (Silver Mask) but it never showed me the text. Firewater and Tanaan Hammer worked without the successful identify. I also only needed one Firewater and one time banging it with the hammer to open it.

I wonder if they changed this a bit? I see the remark about the letter feeling heavy, and I right-clicked on it several times. After less than 10 clicks I got am emote saying "You get the feeling that there is something stuck inside the envelope of the letter." So I kept clicking and after only a few more clicks it turned into the locket, saying, "You shake the Tearstained Love Letter's envelope until a small pendant falls out."

It took several hundred right clicks to turn the letter into the amulet, so don't despair. Still lame though.
